On this edition of the show I am joined by Leslie Mandoki of Mandoki Soulmates a band who the late Greg Lake described as "the best band you will ever hear" over the years this "Supergroup" has boasted Jack Bruce, Clapton, Jon Lord, Manfed Mann, Peter Frampton, Eric Burdon,Roger Hodgson and Lou Gramm to name only a few of those who have contributed the the output and helped build the legacy. Leslie's story is not a traditional one of rags to riches rock star as you will hear the story begins with life behind the iron-curtain in communist controlled Hungary and builds to his eventual escape to Germany and the beginning of this 40 plus year prog rock, jazz fusion odyssey. Mandoki Soulmates – the international and inter-generational supergroup consisting of rock and fusion grandmasters surrounding founder and mastermind Leslie Mandoki – proudly announce their new album, A Memory Of Our Future, A Memory Of Our Future is Mandoki Soulmates' latest work of art and nothing short of an instant prog-rock classic, bringing world-class musicianship and composition together with trenchant social and political messaging. The entire album was recorded and produced purely in the analog domain, from microphone to mixing and mastering, making A Memory Of Our Future a manifesto of precision and passion that is hard to find in today's music landscape. Recorded and mixed in Leslie Mandoki's Red Rock Studios near Munich, mastered in the infamous Sterling Sound Studios in New York and cut in the Emil Berliner Studios in Berlin, the Soulmates are also making a statement as a kind of “revenge of the analog” in times of digital deception, scam bots, and internet trolls. The analog format is also an expression of their special appreciation and bond with the band's audience, “like a love letter handwritten with a fountain pen”. Mandoki continues, “The hyper-emotionalization of news in social media delivers outrage instead of information, intentionally triggering waves of over-excitement and manufactured conflicts. Without fact-checking, where can we find the truth among all the ‘alternative facts,' lies and AI-generated propaganda? This has yielded a deep crisis of trust that is being exploited by the populists and demagogues of the world. Despite their seemingly obvious fallacies and contradictions, the people in their bubbles actually believe them. Rational, civil discourse rarely takes place, and without the sensible exchange of ideas we are left with a festering breeding ground for insecurity, hate and division.” Reflecting with some chagrin, Mandoki states, “The dreams of my generation lie in ruins today. After 1989, we had such a wonderful, historic opportunity to create a mindful, humane, peaceful, and absolutely free world for future generations. But we blew it. Driven by egotism and greed, we have inadvertently enabled the creation of a world where money itself makes profit faster than human labor, no matter the value-added proposition. This devaluation and commodification of people's work has also led to the disregard for sustainability, both economically and environmentally, yielding a climate of social imbalance, inequity, and unrest. This division and radicalization, as we have unfortunately and painfully learned, has even led to war. And so, I sing that there is ‘blood in the water.' Far too much blood in the water.” Mandoki Soulmates are: #progrock Leslie Mandoki Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) Mike Stern Al di Meola Randy Brecker Till Brönner Bill Evans John Helliwell (Supertramp) Cory Henry Richard Bona Steve Bailey Simon Phillips (Toto) Tony Carey (Rainbow) Nick van Eede (Cutting Crew) Jesse Siebenberg (Supertramp) Mark Hart (Supertramp)
This week, an excellent 2005 interview with Roger Hodgson, as he reflects on the glory days of Supertramp, his post-breakup years and his relationship with his former bandmates. Roger also tells the very entertaining stories behind two of Supertramp's biggest hits. We also have Tom's chat with the wonderful Natasha Bedingfield from the early 2000s. Natasha is a very good singer and songwriter – and we do a pretty deep dive in a very short time. And at least once per show, we usually mention how likeable an artist is – and Natasha is this week's MLA – Most Likeable Artist. Last season, we did a couple of in-depth episodes about Soul & R&B music – and they were a lot of fun. Since then, we have discovered another half-dozen soul artists that had massive hits in the ‘70s – and so we've put a bit of a highlight reel together to put the spotlight on these artists that no longer get the attention they deserve. And finally… what was it like to live in the shadow of a Beatle? We have two fascinating interviews – one with Yoko Ono – talking specifically about the haunting song that she and John Lennon were working on the night of his death. And we have Julian Lennon talking about the complicated relationship he had with his dad, and how he and Yoko finally managed to make peace. These are short clips, but very revealing. After two unsuccessful albums and an exodus of band members and management, the career of Supertramp was almost over. But Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, with help from David Bowie's producer, turned things around by creating their masterpiece Crime of the Century. Randy Renaud has the story behind it on this week's edition of the Chronicles of Rock, to mark the album's 50th anniversary.
Season Ten of Famous Lost Words is coming soon! - You're days away from hearing Robert Plant take pot shots at just about everyone, including himself. - You'll hear the unusual story of how an 11-year-old was directly responsible for the first big hit by Tom's favourite band. – We have Lindsey Buckingham talking about his solo career, Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie Nicks – A blues legend reveals his ingenious strategy in dealing with an unruly crowd. – Roger Hodgson remembers the height of Supertramp's popularity and the pain of their breakup – You'll hear Gordon Lightfoot in the feistiest interview from the archives. – We'll also have Cool Song Facts, plus a two-part special on ‘70s rock, featuring the likes of Foreigner, Styx, Boston, ELO, Pink Floyd and many more. – And of course, we can't forget about “When Rock Stars Attack”, when ego-driven musicians rail at the unfairness of being popular and well-paid. - We'll also celebrate the 40th anniversary of MuchMusic – which is pretty handy since Christopher is the original Much VeeJay! And we'll recruit at least one Much veteran to help us out!
A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British Rock band Supertramp in just over fifteen minutes.Supertramp are a British rock group and successfully straddled both progressive rock and pop-rock. Formed in 1970, all members were multi-instrumentalists. Co-founder, composer and lead singer, Roger Hodgson left the band in 1983 to focus on raising his family and a maintaining a more spiritual existence.Although Supertramp are known for ambitious concept albums, they are best known for radio-friendly hits such as “Dreamer” and “The Logical Song”. According to Hodgson, both these songs were based on his experiences growing up in the English countryside and attending boarding school. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

ROGER HODGSON THE VOICE OF SUPERTRAMP 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' Episode 7 Roger Hodgson's inspirational lyrics, enchanting vocals and virtuoso musicianship continue to astound audiences worldwide. Hodgson's distinctive voice and profound musical arrangements have spawned numerous 'Top 40 Hits' for classic rock music legends Supertramp. Some of Roger's most distinguished classics include, “Give a Little Bit,” “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” “Breakfast in America,” “Dreamer,” “School,” “It's Raining Again,” and “Fool's Overture.” After performing to jubilant sold-out audiences worldwide, 'Supertramp's Roger Hodgson' returns to the stage in 2013 on a new global excursion. Roger will be making a rare appearance at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida on Friday, March 22nd and for the first time in the U.S.; Hodgson will be performing with a Rock Symphony Orchestra. After the release of their third studio album, Crime of the Century in 1974, Supertramp quickly captured the attention of music critics and aficionados across the globe. Crime of the Century was a superlative release. The creative writing collaboration of Hodgson and Davies, although contrasting, began a highly successful commercial period for a group comprised of highly esteemed musicians. Roger Hodgson penned; “Dreamer” became Supertramp's first big hit. The album also featured two beautifully composed arrangements by Hodgson entitled ... “Hide in Your Shell” and “If Everyone Was Listening.” Supertramp became a sought-out concert attraction because of their awe-inspiring musical abilities and riveting onstage presence. Their shows often spotlighted a movie projection that displayed the Crime of the Century album cover, an image of two hands clutching jail cell bars while floating in space. The projection synchronized hypnotically with the music above the stage. Subsequent albums … Crisis? What Crisis? (1975) and Even in the Quietest Moments (1977) which produced “Give a Little Bit” (#15 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart). In 1979, Supertramp released what would become their highest selling album, Breakfast in America. The album spawned four U.S. Billboard Hit singles… “The Logical Song” (#6 Hit), “Take the Long Way Home” (#10 Hit), “Goodbye Stranger” (#15 Hit) and “Breakfast in America” (#62 Hit). The album remained on top of the charts worldwide and eventually sold over 20-million copies, becoming one of the biggest selling albums of all-time. Supertramp made an amazingly smooth transition from a progressive rock scheme over album-oriented rock airwaves to mainstream Top 40 radio, and without compromising or sacrificing musical integrity. The bands next album, ironically entitled …Famous Last Words (1982) would be the last featuring vocalist/lyricist/keyboardist and guitarist Roger Hodgson. The album reached #5 on Billboard's Pop Album Charts and was certified Gold. To date ... Supertramp has sold over 60- million albums. Roger Hodgson officially left Supertramp in 1983 to pursue a solo career. In 1987, after his second solo album was released, Hodgson fell and shattered both of his wrists. Doctors said he would never play music again, but his strong faith, positive thinking, self-healing efforts, and physical therapy would prove the medical profession wrong. Within a year and a half, Roger was playing his music once again. Roger Hodgson released three solo albums since leaving Supertramp … In the Eye of the Storm (1984), Hai Hai (1987) and Open the Door (2000). He also released a live album entitled, Rites of Passage (1996). In 2001, Roger was invited to play with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. The band's lineup also featured Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople), Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer), Sheila E., Howard Jones and Mark Rivera. In 2006, Hodgson released his first ever DVD entitled, Take the Long Way Home –Live in Montreal. The solo release achieved platinum status in just seven weeks. The following year, Roger accepted an invitation by Princes William and Harry to perform at the ‘Concert for Diana' in front of an audience of 65,000 people at Wembley Stadium. “Give a Little Bit,” “Dreamer,” “Breakfast in America” and “It's Raining Again” were among Diana's favorite songs. The concert was broadcast in 140 countries around the world. Roger Hodgson's most recent release, “Classics Live” is an incredible collection of his live performances recorded from his '2010 world tour.' There are also 60 unreleased songs that Roger plans to record when the time is right. I had a wonderful opportunity to chat with Roger Hodgson recently before the launch of his worldwide tour. Roger's music continues to inspire and offer hope for people everywhere. His spirituality and positive vibrations were felt throughout our entire conversation. Roger is a true delight. Join us on a riveting journey through the captivating tale behind the timeless classic, Breakfast in America, by Supertramp, released in 1979. Composed by the visionary Roger Hodgson during the prime of his youth, the song chronicles his longing for the sun-soaked shores of California and the carefree American youth culture, while his heart remained entrenched in the mists of his native England.Against initial skepticism within the group, Roger's persistent vision culminated in the recording of Breakfast in America, a track featuring a myriad of instruments skillfully played by the band themselves. The song's seemingly prophetic undertones were soon validated as it skyrocketed to the top of global charts, ushering in a wave of unparalleled success for Supertramp. However, this meteoric rise also marked the beginning of the end for the band, as the fragile dynamic between the musical geniuses, Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies, strained to the breaking point, ultimately leading to the dissolution of Supertramp. Discover the poignant tale of egos, creativity, and the bittersweet success that defined one of the greatest hits of the late 1970s.

On this weeks episode, we take on a big LP, the 1979 monster hit by Supertramp, Breakfast in America. Supertramp struggled early in their career to find an audience. The two main song writers brought different strengths to the band. Founding member Rick Davies leaned more to the progressive rock side of things, where as Roger Hodgson was more pop oriented. Every album after their breakout LP Crime of the Century showed them gaining popularity. But Breakfast in America is their magnum opus. It is the definitive Supertramp album, the culmination of Davies and Hodgson blending tier individual strengths into a distinctive sound (aided in no small part by heavy use of a Wurlitzer electric piano). Full of well crafted (and catchy) tunes like "The Logical Song," "Take the Long Way Home," and "Goodbye Stranger," and possessing one of the most iconic album covers of all time, Breakfast in America captured the hearts of millions of listeners worldwide. Das sind neben dem Titelsong auch "The Logical Song", "Goodbye Stranger" und "Take The Long Way Home". Ein Jahr später — in neuer Formation — veröffentlichen sie "Crime of the Century". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Breakfast in America" wird im Podcast gesprochen (04:49) – "The Logical Song"(14:18) – "Gone Hollywood"(21:40) – "Gone Hollywood"(22:24) – "Child of Vision"(29:24) – "The Logical Song"(48:12) – "Goodbye Stranger"(56:03) – "Breakfast in America"(01:03:54) – "Take the Long Way Home"__________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (26:34) – "Here Comes the Sun" von The Beatles(01:40:12) – "Hyper Hyper" von Scooter(01:10:43) – "When We Were Young" von David Guetta und Kim Petras(01:11:07) – "Cry Cry Cry" von Coldplay(01:11:41) – "It Might Be Time" von Tame Impala (Prod. “Give A Little Bit,” the opening track on Supertramp's 1977 album, Even In The Quietest Moments….is a song that appeals to our better angels, with an idealistic message of unity and generosity. Written by Roger Hodgson when he was still a teenager, the song went on to become one of many worldwide hits for the band, has been used to represent charities ranging from UNICEF to The Red Cross, and even ended up being a princess's favorite song. Take a closer look at this singalong song and its unifying beauty in this episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Originally by Supertramp.., which Schlich performed and is considered by him as a psychedelic version with a reference to Surrealism as a healing tool to overcome anxiety in uncertain times like today."The Logical Song" is a song by English rock group Supertramp that was released as the lead single from their album Breakfast in America in March 1979. It was written primarily by the band's Roger Hodgson, who based the lyrics on his experiences of being sent away to boarding school for ten years. The Logical Song is as well about human nature and growing up. when we are young, we are so idealistic and fascinated by everything and have such creative, beautiful and pure thoughts. but as we grow, society forces it out of us.LyricsThe Logical Songperformed by Detlef SchlichWhen I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderfulA miracle, oh, it was beautiful, magicalAnd all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happilyOh, joyfully, oh, playfully watching meBut then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensibleLogical, oh, responsible, practicalThen they showed me a world where I could be so dependableOh, clinical, oh, intellectual, cynicalThere are times when all the world's asleepThe questions run too deepFor such a simple manWon't you please, please tell me what we've learned?I know it sounds absurdPlease tell me who I amI said, now, watch what you say, they'll be calling you a radicalA liberal, oh, fanatical, criminalOh, won't you sign up your name? Schlich operates with his podcast cross-sectorally. For him, a visual artist has to think transversely instead of just enjoying the luxury of being the antagonist. To drive the narrative and be a protagonist, he will dive and discover with us into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind. Detlef Schlich is Podcaster, Visual Artist, Film Maker, Ritual Designer and Media Archaeologist, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. He mainly works in performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. To research our human condition and create artwork from this reflection, he often uses the digital shaman's methodology as alter ego. His media archaeology is a conceptual and practical exercise in carving out the aesthetic, cultural, and political singularities of media in culture.WEBSITE LINKSDetlef SchlichInstagramDetlef Schlich ArTEEtude I love West Cork Artists FacebookDetlef Schlich I love West Cork Artists Group ArTEEtudeYouTube Channelsvisual PodcastArTEEtudeCute Alien TV official WebsiteArTEEtude Detlef Schlich Det Design Tribal Loop Download here for free Detlef Schlich´s Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culturehttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/303749640_Shamanism_Art_and_Digital_Culture_Cause_and_EffectSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/arteetude-a-podcast-with-artists-by-detlef-schlich/donations
Supertramp, Roger Hodgson, and furniture.
Supertramp singer Roger Hodgson guests on the Fake Show podcast...enjoy!!!
When Jon Anderson went off to do ABWH, Yes members Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, and Alan White were left to ponder what to do next. They considered continuing as a quartet, and then considered replacing Anderson with Billy Sherwood, Steve Walsh, or Roger Hodgson. On this episode, we discuss what it might have been like had Yes West gone on without Anderson. Dan recalls when Alan told him about the touring plans with Supertramp before the whole Union thing came together, and we go over the tracks that Yes West worked on around that period, ending with each of us saying what we think the ideal track list for such an album would have been. You can follow our podcast series at https://anchor.fm/yesshift, which includes an audio version of this episode if you prefer not to look at us. We welcome comments, questions, and suggestions, so feel free to email us at yesshiftpodcast @ gmail.com On our Facebook page. we will not only share our podcast episodes, but also Yes photos and videos with stories from throughout their career.
