Les épisodes se suivent… Encore un hommage cette semaine, cette fois au guitariste DAVE MASON qui est s'est allé vers un ailleurs… L'anglais né en 1946 allait donc avoir 80 ans en mai prochain. On lui doit le groupe TRAFFIC en 1967, alors qu'il vient de faire la rencontre avec Steve Winwood, multiinstrumentiste au sein du Spencer Davis Group pour lequel Dave officie en tant que roadie. Avec Jim Capaldi à la batterie (que Dave Mason rencontra auparavant dans une autre formation commune) et Chris Wood au saxo, ce quatuor psychédélique teinté de jazz et de blues va influencer le rock progressif en devenir, à commencer par un certain Roger Hodgson de Supertramp. Mais le "Traffic" ne sera pas fluide, la mésentente cordiale et Dave va alors mener une carrière solo et  jouer dans les sessions d'enregistrement ou en live aux côtés de plus grands. Citons par exemple à son tableau de chasse son pote Jimi Hendrix, les Stones, Graham Nash, Paul McCartney, George Harrison etc... Il intégrera (certes très brièvement et pour un unique album, "Time" en 1995) le Fleetwood Mac.  Je ne pouvais donc pas démarrer ce numéro sans rendre hommage à ce musicien qui tellement compté pour le rock progressif et le rock tout simplement. D'abord avec un extrait de l'album éponyme de Traffic en 1968 puis dans de sa discographie solo avec un passage de "Let It Flow" en 1977... Du côté américain, un groupe né en 1972 va marquer son temps (la passionnante décennie des 70's) : PAVLOV'S DOG. Retiré du marché jusque dans les années 90, le groupe co-fondé par David Kamp est depuis plus que jamais actif, pour preuve de vie, l'excellentissime album de 2025 "Wonderlust" que je ne me lasse pas de partager avec vous !  Plus récents et plus au nord, chez nos cousins québécois, un duo dont on pourrait faire le parallèle avec les Daft Punk fait le buzz depuis un moment sur les réseaux.  Mais la comparaison avec le duo de pop électronique s'arrête là, à sa forme et à son relatif anonymat. Musicalement, rien à voir, au contraire, ANGINE DE POITRINE (même leur nom est tellement étrange), donne plutôt dans l'anti électronique et même dans l'artisanat puisque le guitariste utilise un instrument qu'il a lui-même conceptualisé : une guitare à frettes séparées d' 1/4 de ton (contrairement au 1/2 ton que connaissent les instruments conformistes). Alors si vous tenez à les comparer à une autre formation française, visez plutôt Magma,  jusque dans le langage inventé, même si le plus souvent instrumentale, leur musique se veut expérimentale. En France ils se sont fait connaître aux Transmusicales de Rennes en décembre  dernier. Mais la notoriété soudaine et internationale d'Angine de Poitrine est surprenante (tellement loin de la Star' Ac !) et soudaine ! Ils sont en tournées partout et pour ce qui concerne la France et plus précisément la région de votre radio préférée, deux dates à retenir  : le 18 mai de nouveau à Rennes et le 19 mai ce sera au Mans. J'avoue y être allé en trempant le  bout de mes cages à miel.. On a la quelque chose de tout à fait inhabituel, mais audacieux et rafraichissant dans l'industrie musicale de plus en plus lissée. Après c'est une histoire de goûts, ça ne peut pas plaire à tut le monde. Mais ce qui est certain c'est qu'il vous faudra plusieurs écoutes pour les adopter… ou pas. Alors pour vous faire une idée, extrait de leur 2ème album "Vol. II" dans ce numéro.  Voilà une artiste qui ne manquait pas non plus d'audace au début des 80's quant elle décidait après seulement trois albums, son jeune âge et une époque qui n'était pas encore celle des home studios, de produire elle-même cet ovni de la culture pop à tendance rock prog : "The Dreaming". KATE BUSH a dur faire peur à sa maison de disque qui s'était rempli les tiroirs caisse, notamment avec le dernier gros tube "Babooshka" et qui ne voyait dans la nouvelle galette de son artiste bankable aucun "hit" en devenir. Faut dire que Kate s'est épuisée pendant un an à triturer les sons, à expérimenter les claviers les plus innovants, à jouer sur tous les registres possibles de sa voix, collaborant avec plusieurs cadors des consoles. Résultat, un album moins commercial que les précédents mais aujourd'hui considéré comme un véritable chef d'œuvre, parfois même supérieur à son successeur "Hounds of love" son apogée. Ainsi Steven Wilson le considère comme son meilleur album, un disque qui selon lui n'aurait jamais du fonctionner et qui miraculeusement et grâce à la vision qu'en avait Kate Bush, à l'esthétique qu'elle lui a donné est devenu un indispensable de sa discographie ! Attention cet album se révèle après plusieurs écoutes et comme l'indiquait son autrice sur la pochette :  à écouter "très fort" !  Après avoir évoqué en début d'émission l'influence du groupe Traffic sur le tout jeune Roger Hodgson, revenons sur l'album incroyable de SUPERTRAMP : "Crime Of The Century" en 1974. Incroyable car le gap dans les compositions, la profondeur des textes, la production est juste extraordinaire en comparaison des deux premiers disques du groupe (pas mauvais et même sous-estimé mais clairement pas du même niveau). Aujourd'hui on se poserait la question de l'IA pour opérer une telle transformation. Mais non, nous sommes encore à l'époque bénie ou la musique était artisanale et fabriquée par des Musiciens doués. Sans doute la pression de la maison disque qui leur offrait une dernière chance avant de les virer a fait son effet, en plus des moyens apportés par un mécène enthousiasmé par le talent qu'il avait décelé chez Rick Davies car il a du en falloir des ressources de production pour obtenir un tel son ! Ajoutez à cela le line-up emblématique du groupe marqué alors par l'arrivée de Helliwell, Thomson et Sienbenberg autour des fondaturs Davies et Hodgson et vous avez là tous les ingrédients qui ont amené à cette réussite totale du groupe qui va pulvériser les charts sous cette forme jusqu'au début des 80's. Retour sur cet icône des 70's... Mais revenons à aujourd'hui parce qu'on ne manque pas de talents et pour belle preuve NINE SKIES ! Le groupe né en France du côté de Nice vient d'officialiser l'intégration d'un nouveau chanteur. Après avoir annoncé un temps Charlie Bramald, lequel a connu quelques ennuis de santé, c'est donc RICCARDO ROMANO qui devient le nouveau membre du groupe. Membre "officiel" car finalement pas si nouveau que ça  puisque Ricardo a déjà été invité sur deux albums. Faut dire que ce multi-instrumentiste au service de la formation italienne RanestRane, du Steve Rothery Band ou encore chez Davis Foster a prouvé ses capacités vocales incroyables. Et quand vous écoutez ses deux contributions en tant que "guest" pour Nine Skies, vous ne pouvez que vous réjouir de cette nouvelle ! Alors qu'en est-il de l'album original "Vega" prévu cette année? Aucune idée, j'imagine que les projets du groupe ont été quelque peu bouleversés ces derniers temps mais en attendant, pour les nouvelles oreilles (appartenant forcément à de futurs fans), une compilation vient d'être publier sous le titre de "Horizons". On y retrouve les deux titres de collaborations avec Ricardo dont un à l'antenne dans ce numéro. Une excellente compil pour entrer dans l'univers de Nine Skies, c'est un fan qui vous le dit !    Ils ont un peu plus de bouteille (enfin d'ancienneté !!), les SOFT MACHINE, dignes représentants de l'école de Canterbury. Sauf qu'en 2026 et à l'instar de Yes avec Steve Howe, le membre le plus "légitime" n'en est pas le fondateur car il n'en reste aucun. Toutefois son arrivée dans la machine psychédélique en 1973 confère à Roy Babbington son statut de Capitaine.  A la différence près que Babbington avait quitté le groupe pendant une période bien plus importante que Howe chez Yes. Mais peu importe, pour les nostalgiques de la grande époque et même pour les nouveaux adeptes l'esprit des pères fondateurs est présent et rendu somme toute plus accessible. nouvel extrait dans ce numéro. L'émission de ce soir démontre bien que le rock progressif peut recouvrir des influences, des couleurs bien différentes y compris dans un même pays. Pour preuve l'Allemagne avec d'abord les KRAFTWERK, groupe précurseur de ce que sera ensuite la musique électronique. Ici en 1977 pour un extrait de "Trans-Europe Express" . De l'autre côté du spectre, avec des mélodies plus marquées et un son plus symphonique : ELOY, icône germanique du "Space Rock" pour un extrait de "Time To Turn", un album qui devait être la 2ème partie d'un double avec le précédent "Planets", mais dont le concept de double album avait été refusé par la maison de disque. Pour démarrer cette émission, direction Bournmouth en territoire Albion  pour le tout nouvel album de BIG BIG TRAIN : "Woodcut". Encore un excellent cru de cette formation mouvante, mais citons parmi les 7 musiciens qui la compose actuellement la violoniste Clare Lindley et bien sur le batteur Nick D'Virgilio de Spock's Beard, l'américain de la bande. Cet opus fait comme il se doit l'objet d'une série de concerts et pour ce qui concerne l'hexagone, une seule date à retenir : le  04 octobre 2026, ce sera Chez Paulette forcément, qu'on se le dise !   David Gilmour, sociétaire de Pink Floyd, vient souffler ses 80 bougies ce 6 mars... Ah quand même ! L'occasion de revenir sur sa carrière solo, et en l'occurrence son premier album solo éponyme paru en 1978 ( juste avant le monstre "The Wall"). Un album à ma connaissance jamais joué par le guitariste lors de ses dernières tournées et c'est dommage car il regorge de belles pépites. A ce propos, je vous conseille l'excellente double galette live "Luck And Strange Concerts", l'occasion d'entendre son dernier opus du même nom mêlé aux standards du Floyd, le tout servi par un production remarquable !  J'en connais un qui ne boude pas son plaisir d'écouter le Grand David, mais qui lui même est particulièrement talentueux ! En revanche son instrument de prédilection à lui c'est plutôt le clavier. Aurélien Goude et sa formation toulousaine ESTHESIS viennent de publier un nouvel extrait vidéo "Connection", issu de leur dernier album "Out Of Step". Un disque qui rencontre un succès bien justifié et dont je n'arrive pas à me lasser ! Mais déjà Aurélien déclare fourmiller d'idées pour le prochain album pour notre plus grande satisfaction !       Un autre talent français qui a fait les belles soirées d'Amarok, c'est ALAN SIMON. Retour sur la grande saga Excalibur, ici avec un extrait du 2ème volet (sur les 5 en attendant un 6ème et ultime épisode) et un extrait interprété au chant par le regretté John Wetton (notamment King Crimson, Asia). Alan qui dans cette saga et plus généralement dans ses gigantesques productions musicales met autour de la même table ronde, les cadors du rock progressif, du folk, du jazz, réunissant ainsi Fairport Convention, Fleetwood Mac, en passant par Ange ou encore et entre autres... …SUPERTRAMP ! Belle transition pour aborder le tout premier album éponyme de cette future bombe des charts, mais nous ne sommes qu'en 1970, la formation n'est pas définitive et bien fragile… Seuls les deux membres fondateurs et auteurs-compositeurs Rick Davies et Roger Hodgson connaitront les heures de gloire avant le départ du second puis le décès de Rick l'année dernière...D'ailleurs sur ce premier LP qui ne contient encore aucun "tube", l'un des membres et 3ème auteur du groupe (uniquement sur cet album) Richard Palmer-James a débuté sa carrière avec John Wetton, et l'un des titres qu'il co-signa avec Davies, "Goldrush" resté inédit, refera surface sur l'ultime album studio des super clochards en 2002, "Slow Motion". Un pure moment de lâcher-prise avec un familier de l'émission, expert en claviers : RICHARD ANTHONY BEAN. Retour sur son dernier album paru l'année dernière "Geostrophic Pathways" et si vous êtes curieux, l'extrait que je vous propose, "Luminous", qui est l'original de l'album fait aussi l'objet d'une version alternative intéressante avec la participation de Paul Landry.  Autre claviériste fort talentueux mais d'une autre génération : Manfred Mann.  En 1974, trois ans après la formation de MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND, autour de son créateur sud africain, les anglais publient déjà leur 5ème opus : "The Good Earth". C'est qu'on ne chômait pas dans les 70's !    Un autre boulimique de travail : Steven Wilson. Entre remixages d'albums de ses illustres aînés,  ses podcasts, son travail de producteur et ses propres albums, l'homme doit vivre dans une dimension parallèle où les journées dépassent les 24 heures… Retour ici sur sa formation PORCUPINE TREE, et un titre que j'avais eu le plaisir de diffuser lors d'une émission spéciale en direct avec mon camarade le Kid  depuis les studios de St Nazaire en décembre à l'occasion d'une émission spéciale lors de la 3ème étape du 30ème anniversaire de votre radio préférée !  Ce titre est issu de l'album "Signify", premier album véritablement réalisé en groupe après les expérimentations de Wilson (ponctuellement appuyé par ses musiciens jusqu' alors) et justement publié en 1996...Quelle grande année !  A propos d'anniversaire, voici une formation canadienne qui célèbre deux décennies de carrière : VERSA. Sur le point d'entrer en studio pour un prochain album à venir en 2027, le trio vient de rééditer son diptyque "A Voyage / A Destination", ayant fait l'objet de sorties en deux parties en 2022 puis 2024. Cette "Roundtrip Special Edition" des deux albums réunis est l'occasion de se procurer l'ensemble de l'œuvre agrémentée de très généreux bonus ! Une œuvre encensée par la critique lors de ses parutions initiales (à juste titre ! ) et un bon investissement pour vos cages à miel ! Mais c'est avec une brèche de 50 ans d'histoire du rock progressif que s'achève ce numéro avec deux formations. La DeLorean s'arrête donc en 1976 avec d'abord les italiens LATTE & MIELE pour leur œuvre sans doute la plus mature de la décennie : "Aquile E Scoiattoli".  D'ailleurs le magazine "Rock & Folk" ne s'y trompe pas en classant cette galette parmi les 20 meilleurs albums du rock progressif italien de la décennie. Ensuite, le propos deviendra plus "commercial" mais c'est une généralité applicable à bon nombre de formation du rock progressif partout dans le monde avant le "revival" que nous connaissons aujourd'hui, même si le marché est plus restreint… Et puis côté américain les PAVLOV'S DOG publiaient la même année leur second album "At The Sound Of The Bell", avec déjà d'excellents guests dont un certain Bill Bruford, batteur de profession qui disposait de temps libre après avoir quitté Yes et en attendant de rejoindre King Crimson. Et puis le saxophoniste de Roxy Music : Andy Mackay, pas mal pour des débutants non ? La formation est d'ailleurs toujours active sous la houlette de David Surkamp et je vous conseille le dernier album en date "Wonderlust" paru en octobre dernier ! Drummer Michael Shrieve's story reads like a rock-and-roll fairy tale — the kind of musical journey that blends youthful serendipity with restless creativity, and a lifelong appetite for pushing boundaries. Before he was a name on Santana's classic albums or a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, he was a kid with sticks and big dreams.Born in California, Shrieve grew up deeply drawn to music. As a teenager he played in his first serious band and gigged around backing rhythm and blues acts — even sitting in with seasoned performers like B.B. King and Etta James.At just 16, a pivotal moment came when he sat in during a jam at San Francisco's famed Fillmore Auditorium. His playing caught someone's ear — Santana's manager Stan Marcum — setting the stage for his astonishing ascent.At 19, Shrieve met Carlos Santana in a studio and was invited to join the band on the spot. It was a leap that would change his life. Almost immediately after joining, Shrieve found himself at the center of one of rock's defining moments: Santana's performance at Woodstock in August 1969. Barely 20 years old, his explosive drum solo on “Soul Sacrifice” became one of the enduring visual and sonic highlights of the event's documentary.Between '69 and '74, Shrieve played on Santana's first seven albums: Santana (1969), Abraxas (1970), Santana III (1971), Caravanserai (1972), Welcome (1973) and Borboletta (1974), plus the live album Lotus (1974).He wasn't just a timekeeper. On Caravanserai he co-produced and co-wrote four tracks, helping guide the band into more experimental, jazz-infused territory. His work helped broaden the possibilities of rock percussion, drawing on influences from jazz greats and Latin rhythms alike.By the mid-'70s, Shrieve was ready to expand his musical palette beyond Santana. He left the band to pursue solo projects and relocated to London. One of his first ventures was Automatic Man , a group that blended rock with progressive and funk elements. He then joined the avant-garde fusion supergroup Go, alongside formidable musicians like Steve Winwood, Stomu Yamashta, Klaus Schulze and Al Di Meola. The band released multiple albums and toured, diving deep into jazz, electronic and world music textures.Throughout the late '70s and '80s Shrieve stayed busy, playing with Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve (with Neal Schon and Sammy Hagar) and contributing to albums by artists as diverse as The Rolling Stones (Emotional Rescue, 1980) and Roger Hodgson of Supertramp. He also collaborated on Richard Wahnfried projects with electronic composer Klaus Schulze and recorded his own electronic music.After leaving Santana, Shrieve didn't slow down — he reinvented himself again and again. Beyond rock and fusion bands, he became a composer and session player whose credits include work with Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Pete Townshend, Andy Summers, Jaco Pastorius and many others.He also ventured into film music, composing scores for movies including Tempest and Apollo 13, and continued collaborations with musicians across genres.In 1997 he reunited with former Santana members — Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, José Areas and Michael Carabello — in Abraxas Pool, a project that revisited and re-imagined elements of the classic Santana sound.Shrieve's contributions were formally recognized when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for his work with Santana, and later honored with Guitar Center's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He's also been cited by Rolling Stone as one of rock's greatest drummers.In 2016, he briefly reunited with the original Santana lineup for the album Santana IV, again marking his deep connection to the music that made his name.Today, Michael Shrieve remains a vibrant artist. His band Spellbinder, blends jazz and improvisatory rock; he works on ambitious solo projects like Drums of Compassion; and continues to collaborate with forward-thinking musicians across genres.Michael joins us today to share his story.

Michael Shrieve is the legendary drummer with Santana who became a superstar at Woodstock with his incredible drum solo in “Soul Sacrifice” during the band's set. He went on to play with a Who's Who in the music business including Steve Winwood and Al Di Meola in GO, a fusion supergroup, another band with Sammy Hagar and Neil Schon, and with Supertramp's Roger Hodgson among others. He also played on the Rolling Stones album Emotional Rescue. Hodgson voulait en effet terminer sur une note pop tandis que Davies souhaitait revenir à leurs racines progressives. Tiraillé entre ces deux visions, l'album en a porté les traces, devenant un savant mélange des deux styles.Finalement, Hodgson a quitté le groupe juste après la sortie de Famous Last Words, regrettant amèrement d'avoir cédé sur ses positions créatives. Émission spéciale : Hommage à Rick Davies (1944 - 2025) fondateur de SUPERTRAMP La triste nouvelle est tombée en début de semaine : Rick Davies nous a quitté ce 6 septembre à l'âge de 81 ans. D'abord batteur puis pianiste, il était repéré par un mécène suisse en 1969 lors d'un concert en Allemagne avec sa formation "The Joint". Mais très vite SAM (le riche contributeur) va cesser d'injecter de l'argent pour une formation en laquelle il ne croit pas vraiment. Il propose en revanche au jeune Rick de le soutenir s'il monte un nouveau projet, persuadé du potentiel de ce pianiste hors pair.  Ce dernier publie alors une petite annonce : Roger Hodgson réussi l'audition haut la main. D'autres musiciens rejoignent ce groupe qui portera d'abord pour nom "Daddy" , puis SUPERTRAMP, selon le titre d'un livre " The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp " repéré par Richard Palmer-James, l'un des membres de ce nouveau petit groupe et qui rejoindra par la suite d'autres célèbres formations. Mais cette première mouture du groupe ne prend pas, les musiciens ne s'accordent pas et leur 1er album éponyme qui parait en 1971 est un échec commercial. Un premier mouvement de personnel a lieu et seul Roger Hodgson reste à bord du projet de Rick mais l'album "Indelibly Stamped" ne se vend pas non plus, pire il croule sous les dettes...Une ultime recrutement de musiciens a lieu et la maison de disque A&M leur laisse une chance ultime, ils n'ont plus le droit à l'échec... Bingo ! Avec un producteur talentueux (Ken Scott ), des musiciens qui s'accordent (c'est la moindre des choses ! ), de grandes compositions inspirées, cette nouvelle équipe constitue le line-up le plus représentatif du groupe qui entre dans son age d'or entre l'excellent (je crois qu'il restera mon album préféré ! ) "Crime Of The Century" en 1974 et "...Famous Last Words" en 1982, en passant par la machine à tubes "Breakfast In America" en 1979. Mais les gouts musicaux d'Hodgson et de Davies vont progressivement diverger, le premier devenant le plus identifiable pour un large public, avec sa voix aiguë reconnaissable entre toute et ses succès commerciaux (même si à l'instar des Beatles, leurs compositions étaient co-signées, en réalité la plupart des titres ont été crées par celui qui en était le vocaliste principal). Roger s'en va donc en 1983 poursuivre une sa carrière solo mais Rick ne veut pas abandonner son bébé et va  continuer l'aventure avec différents changements de musiciens entre 1985 et 2002 (pour les albums studio mais 2010 pour les albums live). Ces dernières années, Roger Hodgson a beaucoup revendiqué être "le" son de Supertramp. On ne peut pas lui donner complètement tord, du fait que la plupart des titres encore diffusés en radio "mainstream" et les ventes de singles sont ses chansons, certes. Mais moins bavard dans les médias et stoppé dans sa carrière par la maladie en 2015 (une tournée de Supertramp était alors annulée), il serait injuste de sous estimer le talent qu'avait Rick Davies qui jouait encore des bons vieux titre du répertoire rock-blues et parfois de son ancien célèbre groupe dans de modestes café concerts américains, l'artiste s'étant installé depuis longtemps à Long Island.               Alors petit et subjectif échantillon de ce talent disséminé tout au long de ce programme, avec je l'espère l'envie de vous replonger dans le répertoire de ce groupe emblématique...   Mais comme on dit "The show must go on" alors j'ai laissé tout de même de la place à de nouveaux sons, à commencer par nos voisins allemands de MIHRAX qui nous gratifient d'un 3ème album "Rox" (diffusé ici l'année dernière). Voici donc un extrait de "Jigsaw Of A Life", né cet été : un beau bébé qu'il faut laisser s'exprimer à plein poumons ! ESTHESIS est l'un des groupes "chouchous" de cette émission vous le savez si vous êtes des fidèles et vos retours ne trompent pas :  j'aurais donc l'oreille ?! Et je ne regrette pas de suivre la formation toulousaine  d'Aurélien Goude depuis ses premiers pas, il y a quelques semaines nous faisions connaissance avec un 1er single issu du prochain album "Out Of Step" (sortie le 31 octobre prochain). Et bien dans ce numéro, un nouvel extrait : "Circus", dernière ligne droite (enfin si je puis dire avec ce titre ! ) vers l'album tant attendu. Seul défaut de ce single :  il est trop court ! Il explore le concept de charge mentale et la théâtralité de la vie et mettant l'accent sur une atmosphère électrique. Musicalement, il est magnifié par les voix habitées de Mathilde Collet et Aurélien Goude, au rythme de la batterie d'Arnaud Nicolau et de la basse de Marc Anguill, influencés par les courants "jungle". Vivement la suite !  Autre artiste "cocorico !"  le non moins talentueux, mais plus à l'est (Lyon) : GABRIEL KELLER, avec ici un extrait de son album live enregistré à la Rotonde de Villeurbanne. Également entouré de remarquables musicien.nes, incluant un violoncelle, une véritable merveille de rock classieux !    Beaucoup moins jeune (avec tout le respect que je leur dois ! ), PINK FLOYD célèbre les 50 ans de l'un des albums préféré de leurs fans : "Wish You Were Here" paru il y a tout juste 50 ans à la mi-septembre 1975.  Depuis la fin de la dernière saison, nous fêtons l'anniversaire de ce monument que nous avons abordé avec la face A. This SPECIAL EPISODE is a tribute to RICK DAVIES, who died this past week at age 81. Rick was the founder of, and one of the two lead singer-songwriters of, Supertramp, one of the greatest bands of the rock era. In 1979 the band hit their zenith with the album “Breakfast In America”, which sold over 20 million records.Rick played keyboards and wrote several of the band's greatest hits. His songs had a blusier, edgier sound to them than those of Roger Hodgson, the other lead songwriter, who wrote more pop oriented songs which he sang in his high tenor voice. Together, however, these two guys provided the yin and yang of Supertramp which defined the band and made them a success.Rick's first band, called Rick's Blues, included Gilbert O'Sullivan on the drums. In August 1969 he placed an ad in Melody Maker seeking to form a new band, and Roger Hodgson auditioned and joined. Supertramp's first successful album was 1974's “Crime Of The Century”. It contained “Bloody Well Right”, Rick's first hit.  The band's breakthrough album was “Breakfast In America”, which contained another Davies hit, “Goodbye Stranger”. Like most rock bands, however, creative differences and jealousies eventually split up Supertramp. When we heard about the death of Supertramp founder Rick Davies a few hours ago, we wanted to pay tribute to him. Rick and the rest of the group were no strangers to us. Since Canada was very instrumental in the story of Supertramp from the mid ‘70s on, they visited our CHUM-FM Toronto studios often. As a Supertramp fan, I am intrigued by the dueling personalities of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. By 1979, when they were promoting Breakfast In America, they admitted that they hadn’t worked closely together since Crime Of The Century, which in my opinion still stands as a masterpiece. To hear more from Supertramp, check out episode 606 when we hear from both Rick and Roger as they deal with their fracturing partnership. Today I discovered an interview that I hadn’t previously heard. It’s from 1988 and Supertramp is still coming to terms with the departure of Roger Hodgson. But we also hear Rick’s fierce determination to carry on and to continue making music that’s meaningful to him… whether it sells millions of copies or not. In this chat, they are talking about their 1988 tour and the most recent (and final) Supertramp album, "Free As A Bird". Ceux qui ont connu une star de la pop ou du cinéma sur les bancs de l'école ont tous dit la même chose : on n'aurait jamais cru. Oui, qui peut affirmer : « J'ai toujours su que Mick deviendrait une star. John ? On était tous d'accord au lycée : un jour, on le verrait passer à la télé. »Non, bien sûr. Les profs et les camarades de classe ont tous été étonnés du destin d'un Michel Polnareff ou d'un Paul McCartney. Mais alors puisqu'il n'y a pas d'école de stars où elles grandissent toutes ensemble, qu'est-ce qui fait qu'un jour Michael devient Mick Jagger ou un Farokh Boulsara, Freddie Mercury ?Et bien, le plus souvent, un drame, une fêlure, un manque, bref un gros problème non résolu qui poussent ces enfants à développer un talent dans lequel ils vont tout donner, s'engouffrer, et qui va un jour être reconnu par tous car, oui, on n'a jamais vu ou entendu un truc pareil. Et en 1962, à Windlesham, une petite ville de la campagne londonienne près du fameux champ de course hippique d'Ascot, le jeune Roger Hodgson vit un drame avec le divorce de ses parents. Avant de quitter la maison familiale, son père lui fait un incroyable cadeau : une guitare électrique. A cette époque, je peux vous dire que des guitares électriques, on n'en voit pas beaucoup. D'ailleurs pourquoi deviendrait-on guitariste ? Les membres de l'orchestre sont toujours dans l'ombre, regardez, derrière Elvis Presley ou Frank Sinatra. Ce sont les Beatles qui dans quelques mois vont devenir les premiers premiers musiciens superstars et envoyer des milliers d'adolescents britanniques dans les magasins d'instruments, créant une génération de surdoués. Voilà donc notre jeune Roger replié sur sa guitare électrique. Il est tellement attaché à ce cadeau de son père que, pour combler le vide, se protéger du complexe d'être désormais un enfant de divorcé, il se rend à l'école avec elle. Et surprise, il ne se fait pas montrer du doigt en classe, miuex, son instituteur lui apprend à jouer les trois accords principaux.Rodger fusionne alors avec sa guitare. Un an plus tard, il donne déjà un concert dans son école en duo avec un autre élève avec qui il interprète neuf chansons qu'il a lui-même composées. La musique et lui font désormais UN. Rodger apprend aussi à jouer de nombreux instruments, rien ne lui résiste.Au sortir de l'école, en 1969, Rodger Hodgson enregistre déjà un disque pour le label Island qui avant de produire Bob Marley et U2, publie alors Steve Winwood et Eric Clapton. Il faut dire que Rodger a croisé le chemin d'un autre surdoué nommé Reginald Dwight avec qui il chante sous le nom de Argosy. Malheureusement après un premier 45 tours, Reginald le quitte avec le batteur et l'autre guitariste pour faire une carrière solo sous le nom de Elton John. Se retrouvant seul, Roger Hodgson répond alors à la petite annonce d'un certain Rick Davies : cherche guitariste. Le jour de l'audition, ils sont une petite centaine à faire la file. Pourtant, immédiatement, Rick dira : C'est lui ! Quel talent ! Je n'ai jamais entendu un truc pareil.

À l'écouter, on ne peut s'empêcher de frissonner, tant la détresse du narrateur est palpable. Leslie's story is not a traditional one of rags to riches rock star as you will hear the story begins with life behind the iron-curtain in communist controlled Hungary and builds to his eventual escape to Germany and the beginning of this 40 plus year prog rock, jazz fusion odyssey. Mandoki Soulmates – the international and inter-generational supergroup consisting of rock and fusion grandmasters surrounding founder and mastermind Leslie Mandoki – proudly announce their new album, A Memory Of Our Future, A Memory Of Our Future is Mandoki Soulmates' latest work of art and nothing short of an instant prog-rock classic, bringing world-class musicianship and composition together with trenchant social and political messaging. The entire album was recorded and produced purely in the analog domain, from microphone to mixing and mastering, making A Memory Of Our Future a manifesto of precision and passion that is hard to find in today's music landscape. On this weeks episode, we take on a big LP, the 1979 monster hit by Supertramp, Breakfast in America. Supertramp struggled early in their career to find an audience. The two main song writers brought different strengths to the band. Founding member Rick Davies leaned more to the progressive rock side of things, where as Roger Hodgson was more pop oriented.  Every album after their breakout LP Crime of the Century showed them gaining popularity. But Breakfast in America is their magnum opus. It is the definitive Supertramp album, the culmination of  Davies and Hodgson blending tier individual strengths into a distinctive sound (aided in no small part by heavy use of a Wurlitzer electric piano).  Full of well crafted (and catchy) tunes like  "The Logical Song," "Take the Long Way Home," and "Goodbye Stranger," and possessing one of the most iconic album covers of all time, Breakfast in America captured the hearts of millions of listeners worldwide. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

"Breakfast in America" ist ein zeitloser Meilenstein des progressiven Pop mit Songs, die auch heute noch relevant sind. Das sind neben dem Titelsong auch "The Logical Song", "Goodbye Stranger" und "Take The Long Way Home". Die Gründung der Band Supertramp Supertramp haben sich 1969 gegründet. Rick Davies spielt bereits im Alter von 12 Jahren Schlagzeug und steigt dann zum Keyboarder auf. Bei einem Gig in München lernt er den holländischen Millionär Stanley August, genannt Sam, kennen. Dieser ermutigt ihn dazu eine eigene Band zu gründen. Über eine Annonce im "Melody Maker", einer großen britischen Musikzeitschrift, die bis ins Jahr 2000 wöchentlich erschienen ist, sucht er geeignete Musiker. Daraufhin meldet sich Roger Hodgson bei ihm und die beiden gründen die Band "Daddy". Ihr allererster Auftritt findet im damaligen Münchner Szene-Lokal "PN hit-house" auf der Leopoldstraße statt. Unter der Woche spielten doch meist Cover-Bands, während am Wochenende die Bands aus Großbritannien auftraten. In München entscheiden sie sich für einen neuen Bandnamen: aus Daddy wird Supertramp. Von "Supertramp" bis hin zu "Breakfast in America" Die ersten Alben "Supertramp" und "Indelibly Stamped" sind wenig erfolgreich, weshalb das Kapitel Supertramp bereits 1971 zunächst als beendet erscheint. Die Band besteht zu diesem Zeitpunkt aus Rick Davies, Rodger Hodgson, Kevin Currie, Frank Farrell und Dave Winthrop. Ihr Finanzier Sam zieht sich aus dem Musikgeschäft zurück, 1973 stehen Supertramp vor der Auflösung. Ein Jahr später — in neuer Formation — veröffentlichen sie "Crime of the Century". Zu Davies und Hodgson gesellen sich nun John Helliwell, Bob Siebenberg und Dougie Thomson dazu. Erstmals in der Bandgeschichte agieren auch Gastmusiker bei den Aufnahmen. Insgesamt gibt es für Davies und Hodgson drei Phasen von Songwriting während der Produktion des Albums. Sie schreiben ihre Songs zuhause und nehmen sie auch dort zunächst als Demo auf, eine weitere Demo wird im Studio aufgenommen, bis sie im dritten Schritt das Arrangement festlegen und die Songs tatsächlich einspielen. Opener "Gone Hollywood" und Closer "Child of Vision" Für unsere SWR1 Musikredakion sind beides epische Stücke. Mit gut 7,5 Minuten behalten Supertramp ihre Tradition bei, den Closer ziemlich episch zu gestalten. "Child of Vision" thematisiert angeblich das Verhältnis zwischen den beiden äußerst unterschiedlichen Songwriter-Persönlichkeiten: Rick Davies und Roger Hudgson. Hodgson hat den Song geschrieben und dabei möglicherweise an Davies gedacht. Die beiden haben gänzlich unterschiedliche Vorstellungen vom Leben, nicht nur auf musikalischer Ebene und eben diese Widersprüche werden in "Child of Vision" thematisiert. Davies kommt aus dem Jazz, dem Rhythm and Blues und hat dementsprechend andere musikalische oder auch thematisch viel tiefere, destruktivere Ansätze an Texten, während Roger Hodgson vom Pop geprägt ist und eine Falsettstimme mitbringt. "The Logical Song" Die Welt der erwachsenen Erziehungsschule aus Sicht eines Teenagers. "The Logical Song" handelt davon, dass Schülerinnen und Schülern gelehrt wird nach Außen zu funktionieren, aber nicht, wer man innerlich wirklich ist und was den wahren Sinn des Lebens ausmacht. Die Nummer war die Lead-Single von "Breakfast in America" und ist bis heute ein absoluter Rock-Klassiker und für SWR1 Musikredakteur Frank König ein wahres Meisterwerk. Der Song ist in drei Teile gegliedert: beginnend in der Kindheit, über die Schulzeit im Internat bis hin zum Erwachsenendasein. Rodgson beschreibt die magische Schönheit der Kinderwelt und stellt sie der widersprüchlichen und überfordernden Erwachsenenwelt gegenüber und stellt sich die Frage: Wer bin ich eigentlich?
