In Production: Tales from Topographic OceansListening guide YesBooks.com Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller We spoke to publisher and Yes author Stephen Lambe this week about his (relatively) recent book Rock Classics - Yes 90125. The book delves deeply into the story of the 1983 album that became Yes' best selling record of all time and saw the rebirth of the band after the events following the Drama tour. It could all have been very different if Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, Tony Kaye and Alan White had stuck with their original plans of creating a much more stadium rock orientated band called Cinema. Stephen Lambe helps us to discover the unsung hero of the album's creation and the man who was responsible for bringing Jon Anderson back into the fold. Listen out for that later on in the episode and get hold of a copy of Stephen's book at Burning Shed or your favourite retailer. Who is the unsung hero of 90125? Did the members of Cinema want it to morph into Yes? What are the keys to the longevity of the album? Let us know if you agree with us! Find him online at bradbirzer.com or @bradleybirzer on Twitter.Brad's Music Pick: YesWell, the buses outside don't add much weight to the story in our heads we began in our last episode of Political Beats, so we're thinking we should go and write a punchline; thus, welcome to part two of our discussion of the great progressive rock band Yes, wherein we discuss their career from 1974's Relayer onward to the present day. (Be forewarned -- we pick and choose after the debacle of Union (1991). Fondly remembered: Talk, Keys To Ascension, Magnification and Fly From Here. Not so fondly remembered: erm, Open Your Eyes.)I could offer more prelude than that, but this is one episode where the music will do vastly more explaining than any written exegesis; Yes bounced back after Tales from Topographic Oceans with an album even more abstruse and outwardly difficult, yet light years more compelling. From that point onward and despite countless personnel changes -- up to and including swapping the "Video Killed the Radio Star" guys straight into their band -- the group maintained its unique sound and creative voice throughout the second half of the Seventies in a series of albums that age like casked scotch. (Check out the vigorous defenses of Tormato and Drama ye shall find herein!) Then the group collapsed after a disastrous 1980 tour and seemed to be over . . . until a South African guitarist/vocalist/songwriter named Trevor Rabin entered the picture. All this and much, much more is covered on an episode of Political Beats that spans from the mid Seventies all the way to the late Eighties without once pausing for breath. Afterwards, we take a breather here and there, but for now? Tempus fugit, my friends, so you should click, because we're off to the races, going for the one.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to Filmshake because we're talking Tony Scott's prescient 1998 action-thriller, Enemy of the State. Will Smith, Gene Hackman, and a Pentagon-full of well-regarded and beloved actors star in this cinematic exploration of government overreach into private citizens' privacy, and also, Jason Lee makes a brilliant exclamation about untoward things being done to a duck. Rather fittingly, yet for no good reason, Jordan and Nic approach this film as off the leash as Jon Voight with a free government pass, like this movie is the lingerie store from this movie. Episode # 215 - Trevor Rabin discusses his new solo album "RIO" and more! Trevor Rabin, the South African guitarist, singer, multi-musician, writer and producer, recently announced ‘Rio', his first solo album of vocal material in 34 years, set for release in just a week's time on the 6th October 2023 worldwide. Given that his previous vocal-led solo album, ‘Can't Look Away', was released in 1989 (2012's ‘Jacaranda' was all-instrumental), Rabin has kept us waiting for more than three decades for a follow-up. Trevor admits that there was pressure from all sides, including his own family, to have speeded up the process. However, the delay is excusable. Since leaving Yes following the ‘Talk' album in 1994 and largely as a prequel to touring as part of ARW in 2016, the guitarist entered the time-consuming world of movie soundtracks. Not just any old movies, either. Trevor's name appears as composer for such blockbusters as Con Air, Armageddon, Remember the Titans, Enemy Of The State, Deep Blue Sea, Glory Road, and Gone In 60 Seconds and both National Treasure movies, amongst many others. “Over the past ten years I was having ideas, concepts that I couldn't implement due to my busy schedule,” he explains, adding: “To be honest, those years flew by in a flurry. I knew that this was the time, and once I found my momentum I worked on the album 24/7.” The process proved a labour of love and as with his first and second solo records, ‘Trevor Rabin' and ‘Face To Face' (from 1977 and '79 respectively), Rabin handled just about all of the instruments himself. Stylistically, ‘Rio'– is tough to categorise. Besides guitar-driven rock-meets-pop, ‘Goodbye' is Country & Western with an edgy drive, while ‘Tumbleweed' begins in a burst of harmonies. No wonder its working title was ‘The Demographic Nightmare'. “I wanted to get into many different areas,” Rabin states. “Of course there are ‘prog things', but overall there are a lot of styles going on.” As mentioned, Trevor plays the majority of the instruments on the record. However, on drums for a number of tracks is Lou Molino, while Trevor also contributes some drums and percussion. Vinnie Colaiuta provides drums on ‘Push', and Rabin's son Ryan Rabin helped out with some of the most important percussive arrangements. Along the way Trevor also drafted in a couple of friends, Dante Marchi and Liz Constantine, to sing back up on two songs, as well as Charlie Bisharat on violin.

To hardcore fans of Yes, 1983's 90125 was a big departure from their progressive rock sound of the 1970s. But for the MTV generation, it was our first introduction to Yes and the immense talent within the band. Driven by new member Trevor Rabin as the guitarist, sometime lead vocalist & dominant songwriter and former lead singer Trevor Horn as producer, Yes went in a more commercial and pop direction. Anchored by the return of singer Jon Anderson, stalwart Chris Squire on bass, long time drummer Alan White and returning member Tony Kaye on keyboards, they sold more than 3 million copies in the US and were all over MTV thanks to Owner of a Lonely Heart. But what did the progressive rock Yes fans think about 90125? Was it too far a departure from their prog rock roots? Was the guitar too heavy compared to the picking of Steve Howe? UK fans didn't embrace this album like the US fans did and now Yes, led by Steve Howe who was in supergroup Asia during the recording of 90125, don't play songs from this record. I'm a pretty big YES fan, so when I was contacted to speak to Trevor, I said, well, ummmm, "YES!!" immediately. His new solo album "Rio" drops on October 6th. Trevor talks about the new record, his first solo album since 1989. "Jesus I haven't done a record in so long, I must get into it." he said after speaking to working on music scores for movies for the past three decades. He told me he felt fresh doing the album, almost like it was his first one. He talked about creating, not only the music, but the cover art as well. Yes, that's his painting on the cover. He said the album is pretty diverse. "It still sounds like something from a record I'd make. I think while demographically it visits a lot of different areas, I think it's pretty coherent and cohesive, stylistically of a record I've penned, if you'd like." We also discussed his working on movie scores and how it differs from making records. He's done several of them. He told me his favorite movie he's scored was either "Armageddon, or National Treasure or Bad Boys 2." But he said Remember the Titans was one he's really proud of also. He told me about discovering music while growing up in South Africa. He said there was a lot of British rock. Led Zeppelin, Cream and the Beatles were big in his youth. Now, with the world a lot smaller, it's easier to find music and bands to listen to. His son is a musician and producer, but he's showing him music he's never seen or heard before as well. I'm a huge Chris Squire fan. Trevor told me about playing with the bass legend. "Having Chris Squire playing bass behind you is like having a bulldozer back there. You can't relax." He said the he was literally like a brother to him. He went into how he got hooked up with YES, and went onto talk about really being the impedance to the rebirth of the band. He said Chris tried getting him back into the band in the 90s, but he had a lot going on with scoring movies. He told very funny story about Chris thanking him for "revitalizing the back catalog of YES" after they broke out in the 80s. He also spoke to a kid from South Africa being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. "It's amazing...what an honor." What a fun conversation. Another one checked off the list of people I've never spoken to before. I found Trevor to be fun and easy to speak with. Great guy and really talented! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown-2/
