What's up, dudes? It's a prog rock Christmas! Yes, we're talking Chris Squire and Alan White's “Run with the Fox!” This single along with B-side “Return of the Fox” was recorded and released in 1981 on Atlantic Records. The song is a masterclass on pedal point, syncopation, and suspended chords, with a driving beat and occasional mixed meter just to keep things interesting.Chris Squire and Alan White played bass and drums respectively for progressive rock band Yes, and co-wrote the Christmas song with King Crimson lyricist Peter Sinfield. How? You ask. Well, Yes frontman Jon Anderson and keyboardist Rick Wakeman had left the group in 1980, replaced by Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn from The Buggles. After an album and tour, Yes disbanded in ‘81 and Squire and White continued to work together, composing “Return of the Fox” with Squire on vocals. Naturally it got a lot of airplay through the ‘80s and early ‘90s during the Christmas season.Synths? Check. Pedal tones? Yup. Obscure metaphoric lyrics? Definitely! You told me just 10 seconds ago we're going to be talking about MTV, and that's the first thing that popped into my head. I'm not bad at that, am I? Stephen Semple: No, that's not bad at all. It's amazing how MTV has changed, but, anybody from our generation, that's MTV. Dave Young: We remember when they played music. Stephen Semple: We remember when they played music. Dave Young: They gave awards for music and music videos. Stephen Semple: Yeah. They've really changed, but we're going to go back to the fun early days when they were actually a music channel. That campaign was amazing. We're going to pause for a minute and we're going to slot in a whole pile of those I Want My MTV ads at a certain point here because the list of musicians that they had do that is just incredible, just incredible. Dave Young: You may not have as deep awareness of this as I do. Do you know the very first song that they played when they launched MTV? Stephen Semple: I do, and you can share it right now. Dave Young: Well, because I was in the radio business, right? The first song was The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star. Stephen Semple: Killed the Radio Star, yeah, exactly, which was so funny. Dave Young: Everybody in the radio business is like, "I like MTV, but this is ominous." Stephen Semple: Yeah, you got to really have a sense of humor to do that. Dave Young: We're in trouble now. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Exactly. Dave Young: Then they quit playing music and radio was fine. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Exactly. Radio outlasted MTV in the end. MTV was launched on August 1st, 1981, and it's the flagship property of MTV Entertainment, which is now part of Paramount. Yeah, it's not in the music world really today, but, when it launched, it changed the music world, and that's what we're going to really talk about is the change that happened. The idea, I don't know that you're aware of this, Dave, but the idea for MTV was created by Michael Nesmith, who people from our generation would know as one of the monkeys, so one of the monkeys created the idea for MTV, which I thought was really, really incredible. Dave Young: Really, and he was such a creative, even a filmmaker, right? He did music videos before MTV. He did films. Stephen Semple: He did. Yes, he did. He was a real pioneer in music videos. He wrote this solo tune in 1977 called Rio, and he was asked to create a clip for it. What everyone was expecting was the standard clip that was done at the time, which was a guy standing in front of a microphone singing the song, right? Instead, what he did is he created this clip where there were shots from locations and all these other things that didn't necessarily have anything to do with the song, and this is considered the world's first music video, because this is not what people were expecting. They were expecting this shot of him singing in front of a mic, and they got all this other stuff instead. What ended up happening was this ran, this got aired in Australia, the video, and Rio went number one in Australia with the airing of this. Now, it wasn't called a music video at the time. It was called a video record is what they first called it.

His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. SWR1-Musikchef Bernd Rosinus hat eine seiner Lieblingsplatten mitgebracht, das erste Solo Album von The Police Frontmann Sting "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" aus dem Jahr 1985. Als die Platte rauskam, hat sie Bernd Rosinus total umgehauen. Auch, weil es was ganz anderes war als das, was The Police vorher gemacht haben. Das Besondere an "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" ist, dass Sting sich für die Platte ganz viele Jazzmusiker zusammengesucht hat, mit denen er dieses Album aufgenommen und produziert hat. Es ist ein Popalbum, dass der hohen Qualität der Jazzmusiker auch immer wieder den Raum gibt, um sich zu präsentieren und ihr Können zu zeigen. "The Age of Plastic" von The Buggles The Buggles, die Band kennen die meisten vermutlich vom Song "Video Killed The Radio Star", dem Song, der beim Start von MTV in Amerika 1981 als erstes Musikvideo über die Bildschirme in die Wohnzimmer flimmerte. Für SWR1-Musikredakteur und Moderator Dave Jörg haben die Buggles aber noch mehr zu bieten als nur diesen einen Megahit, auch wenn der Song auch für ihn schon etwas ganz Besonderes ist. "Brother To Brother" von Gino Vannelli Das SWR1-Musikredakteur Stephan Fahrig für diese Weihnachtsfolge gerade das Album rausgesucht hat, grenzt an sich schon an ein kleines Weihnachtswunder, denn eigentlich hatte er eine ganz andere Folge im Sinn, aber als sein Smartphone ihn dann mit einem Rückblick an ein persönliches Treffen mit Gino Vannelli vor einem Konzert in Frankfurt erinnerte, änderte er seine Meinung zu "Brother to Brother". Für Stephan Fahrig persönlich ist diese Platte ein Meilenstein, weil für ihn der Sound der Platte und von Gino Vannelli der beispielhafte Sound der 70er ist.
