Today on Art of the Cut, we're talking with multi-Oscar winner, Walter Murch, ACE. I interviewed Walter in person just before his appearance at the 2024 ACE Eddie Awards to receive his Career Achievement Award - an award which was presented by his long-time friend and collaborator, George Lucas. Murch's career is filled with cinematic cultural touchstones. He was nominated for an Oscar for sound and won BAFTAS for both sound and editing on The Conversation. He was nominated for a BAFTA and an Oscar for editing Julia. For Apocalypse Now, he was nominated for an Oscar for Editing, BAFTAs for editing AND sound, an ACE Eddie … and won the Oscar for sound. In 1991 he was nominated for Oscars for both The Godfather Part II AND Ghost, and was nominated for an ACE Eddie for Ghost. For The English Patient he was nominated for a BAFTA for sound, and won a BAFTA for editing, not to mention winning an ACE Eddie and TWO Oscars for sound AND editing. He was nominated for an ACE Eddie for The Talented Mr. Ripley. He was nominated for two BAFTAs - for sound and editing - and for an ACE Eddie and an Oscar for “Cold Mountain.” He was nominated for an Emmy for “Hemingway and Gelhorn,” for which he ALSO won an ACE Eddie.   On top of all of this, he has been writing a book on filmmaking - actually two volumes! - with the first volume releasing later this year, focusing on editing and sound, and the second volume coming next year. Most of the following interview focuses on the thoughts and concepts outlined in that book, which is called “Suddenly Something Clicked.” This very special episode happens to be the 10th anniversary episode of Art of the Cut! 10 years... nearly 500 interviews. There is a TON of great visual content in the accompanying blog. Please listen to the podcast and follow along with the transcript at borisfx.com/blog/aotc. Many photos of Murch at the Moviola, clips from the films we discuss and more.

Do you know of an editor that has won two ACE Eddie Awards in the same night?I do!That's Will Znidaric, ACE who's my guest on the show today and we're gonna have a deep and honest conversation about the phycology of editing and also get some insight into the world of documentaries because Will has worked on some amazing, high profile projects such as the Oscar-winning documentary Winter on Fire, Five Came Back, Jane, Quincy, The Black Godfather, Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, and Biggie: I've Got a Story to Tell. If you've watched a documentary in the last couple of years, you've very likely seen Will's work. He's gonna be talking not only about his editing process, but also share his thoughts on how psychology is 50% of the work, and it can be  attributed to finding success in post production and  becoming a better editor. But aside from being an awesome person and talented editor, Will is also very knowledgeable about the post production industry and has a lot of experience. About 5 years ago, he gave me some piece of advice that helped me make a mindset shift with regards to job rejection. For many years, I'd take it personally if I was not given a job opportunity and it created a lot of self doubt for me, which led to me losing motivation and belief in myself and my abilities. I have a story to share about how Will changed my perspective on rejection that will help you next time you  miss out on a job you wanted. Will and I will also be discussing his path from cutting commercials to award-winning documentaries, how it's okay to take the long road to success in the post production industry, ways you can gain confidence and keep growing as an editor,  finding personal growth through pain, the importance of being an optimist as an editor, why it's important to take care of your health, tips on how you can improve your storytelling skills, and we'll get some practical advice from Will on how to become a documentary editor. Will and I also discuss the following topics:The connection between cinematography and editingDiscovering that a job or career is not right for youThe slow, steady approach from being assistant to becoming an editorStarting to build relationships as an assistant editorHaving a bright, open, helpful attitude will allow you to become a better editor How there are no shortcuts to good editingThe realities of working in editorialHow Will got first documentary gig on the Oscar-winning documentary Winter on FireThe essential skills of being a good editorHow Will finds the essence of the story in documentariesDebunking the myth that unscripted assistants or editors can't work on scripted projects The importance of overcoming shyness, putting yourself out there, and communicating your goalsWhy it's important to seek new challenges to keep growing as an editorThe health & wellness aspect of an editing careerHow taking work breaks helps with mental clarity and finding solutions in the editCLICK HERE to join the Hollywood Editing Mentor community!SUBSCRIBE and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts!Original Music: "Apollo's Haze" and "Do You Want" by JesusdapnkFacebook: www.fb.com/jesusdapnkSoundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/jesusdapnkInstagram: @jesusdapnk

On this week’s For Your Consideration, Collider’s awards experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider recap the SAG Awards, the PGA Awards and the ACE/Eddie Awards, all of which are important precursors on the road to the Oscars. SAG gave Parasite the award for Best Ensemble, but did that boost its Best Picture chances, or was it simply the only way to honor this cast, none of whom were nominated as individuals?Meanwhile, 1917 won the PGA Award, while Parasite and Jojo Rabbit split the top prizes from the editors guild. 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood didn't make the cut in the Best Editing category, so that major award will be going elsewhere this year, and if Parasite wins, that could signal a Best Picture upset later in the night. As for the second half of the episode, the FYC gang runs down why each Best Picture contender will win, and why each film will lose. There are pros and cons to each movie, and we can't wait to see what happens on February 9. Jeff, for one, is predicting a shocker, though you'll have to watch the episode to find out what it is.Make sure to leave a COMMENT below with your own thoughts on the Best Picture race, and remember to LIKE and SHARE this video on social media. Since graduating from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Brian A. Kates has edited many acclaimed films, with 14 films selected to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and 5 films in Cannes. He has been honored with an Emmy Award for his work on Taking Chance, and an Emmy nomination for editing the pilot episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He also won two ACE Eddie Awards for his work on Bessie and Lackawanna Blues, in addition to two other Eddie Award nominations. His collaborators have included Andrew Dominik (Killing Them Softly), Dee Rees (Bessie), Joseph Cedar (Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer), Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger), Tamara Jenkins (Private Life and The Savages), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Jack Goes Boating), John Cameron Mitchell (How to Talk to Girls at Parties and Shortbus), Lee Daniels (Shadowboxer and The Butler), Nicole Kassell (The Woodsman), George C. Wolfe (Lackawanna Blues and Nights in Rodanthe), Moisés Kaufman (The Laramie Project), Ross Katz (Taking Chance), John Krokidas (Kill Your Darlings), and Jeremiah Zagar (We the Animals). In addition to his work in fiction, he was Jonathan Caouette's co-editor on the groundbreaking documentary Tarnation. His television work has included collaborations with Alfonso Cuarón (Believe), Bill Condon (The Big C), David Simon and Eric Overmeyer (Treme), and Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). He is currently finishing his third collaboration with John Cameron Mitchell, a 10-episode original audio musical, featuring the music of Bryan Weller and Mr. Mitchell, and a cast including Glenn Close, Patti LuPone, Cynthia Erivo, Ben Foster, Nakhane, Bridget Everett, Justin Vivian Bond, and Laurie Anderson, entitled Homunculus. I had the pleasure of chatting with Brian this week about his Emmy nomination for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, his summer camp background that got him into film and his collaborations with Lee Daniels and John Cameron Mitchell. By the end it turns a bit into an impromptu gushing about his work on NBC's Kings and a promo for his new film We the Animals, which is in theaters now. GO SEE IT. You can see Brian's work next in the upcoming Tamara Jenkins film Private Life, which will world premiere at the New York Film Festival next month. There also might be a bit of tea spilled on an upcoming sequel to a gay classic.  This interview runs just shy of 37m with music. Opening: "A Wonderful Day Like Today" from The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd (Original 1965 Broadway Cast)  Closing: "Girls Talk" by Dave Edmonds

"What is ACE, how do I become a member, and what are the benefits?" are common questions I'm asked often by fellow film editors (that I've also asked myself). Beyond simply breaking down the criteria for entry into the most prestigious organization in the post-production industry, in this episode I speak with Steve Rivkin, ACE President and editor of such films as Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ali, and many more, about what it really takes to be considered an elite editor, whether or not you belong to ACE. We break down how Stephen broke into the film industry without every having an assistant editor credit to his name, the secret to getting hired by any director or producer, how to transition from assisting to editing, and much more. If you've ever been curious about the inner-workings of what it really means to work as an editor at the highest levels and the psychology necessary to succeed, this episode is for you. Show Sponsor: G-Technology Topics of Conversation: Steve's big break into the industry and how he became the president of ACE The evolution of the modern editing career trajectory How to make contacts in post-production Re-learning the lost art of cutting collaboratively What you will need to get into ACE Fostering good relationships within the film industry How Steve became an editor without an assistant credit to his name What it takes to transition from assisting to editing The in's and out's of ACE as well as it's educational initiatives Raising awareness and perception of editing as a craft Useful Links: Enjoying The Show?
