This week, Phil and Emily continue their journey through 2000s cinema with Nights in Rodanthe, the 2008 Nicholas Sparks adaptation that brought Richard Gere and Diane Lane back together for another romantic whirlwind. Joining them is filmmaker and writer Jessica Ellis, who helps unpack why this film leans into peak Sparks melodrama—complete with stormy nights, second chances, and plenty of emotional turmoil. From its sweeping coastal setting to its tearjerker ending, we break down how Nights in Rodanthe fits into the Nicholas Sparks cinematic universe, what makes it stand out from (or get lost among) his other adaptations, and why the 2000s were such a golden era for sentimental romance.Grab your tissues and join us for a deep dive into one of the decade's most Nicholas Sparks-y movies.

The coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina is just a small spot on the map, but it's a big place in the hearts of the people who live, own property, and vacation there. Located along Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Rodanthe has been in the national spotlight because of a succession of houses that have fallen into the Atlantic Ocean due to beach erosion. There have been ten houses affected in the past four years, and five this year alone.  As the Traveler and other national media outlets have reported, every time a beach house succumbs to the sea, it creates a massive debris field that is carried down the shore for miles, posing serious hazards to people, flora and fauna alike. Residents have described the phenomenon as a slow-motion hurricane.  In addition to the ongoing discussions about other at-risk houses, there is the very real issue of cleanup. The National Park Service brings in contractors who take out debris in truckloads, but that doesn't mean that local residents are just standing idly by. Recently Traveler correspondent Kim O'Connell had the pleasure of interviewing local Tom Brueckner the day before he was set to join a group of residents to do a big beach cleanup as part of the National Park Service's newly launched Adopt-A-Beach program.

We begin with a discussion about parking courtesy and shift to discuss the best selling author, Nicholas Sparks and his book, "Nights in Rodanthe." This is our first entry in a series we like to call, reading out of our comfort zone. Best selling romance is not usually our kind of book, and in hindsight we probably picked a dud of an example. But we had loads to discuss, including the 2008 movie adaptation starring Richard Gere and Dianne Lane. Which did we like better? Washington, D.C. native Christopher Meloni studied acting at the University of Colorado, Boulder, before graduating with a degree in History. He worked in construction and as a bouncer before breaking into acting, studying his craft in New York with legendary teacher Sanford Meisner. His television breakout role was on “NYPD Blue,” opposite Kim Delaney. That led to being cast on HBO's gritty landmark series “Oz,” playing the psychotic, bisexual serial killer, ‘Chris Keller.' In 1999, Meloni landed his starring role on the popular and long-running NBC series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” with the actor working in both series simultaneously until “Oz” ended its 6 year run in 2003. He continued on “Law & Order: SVU” for twelve seasons, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as Detective Elliot Stabler. Meloni then returned to HBO in a pivotal arc as the head of the Vampire Authority, ‘Roman,' in Alan Ball's wildly popular drama, “True Blood;” and as Julie Louis-Dreyfus' trainer, ‘Ray,' in “Veep.” Meloni is currently co-starring in the Netflix limited event series, “Wet Hot American Summer” which is the prequel to the cult film in which he also co-starred. Meloni's other big screen credits include the August 2015 Sony Classics release, "Diary of a Teenage Girl " with Kristen Wiig; Greg Araki's "White Bird in a Blizzard"; "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For"; "Man of Steel"; "42"; "They Came Together"; "Small Time"; the Terry Gilliam films "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Twelve Monkeys"; the Wachowskis' first film "Bound"; the romantic comedy blockbuster "Runaway Bride"; "Nights in Rodanthe"; and such cult favorites as "Wet Hot American Summer", "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle", and its first sequel, "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay".

Give yourself some bad mood bangs and button up those fuzzy cardigans and tune in to episode 5 of our season dedicated to diva debuts on-screen. Film writer Karen Janszen and Adam Shankman (dir. The Wedding Planner; Cheaper by the Dozen 2) use the dazzling writing of Nicholas Sparks (writ. The Notebook; Nights in Rodanthe) to take us on A Walk to Remember (2002)--one that we'll never forget. This week, Jo and Rhiannon and Jamie (played by enigmatic chartreuse Mandy Moore) are here to teach all of you unruly, misunderstood boys a thing or two about love, faith, telescopes, and abstinence. This coming-of-age romantic drama film got us playing fast and loose roulette with the Christian Church, so don't miss this episode before we're excommunicated and forced to be the leads in the spring musical, just like Landon (fan favorite Shane West).

Long nights, impossible odds, keeping your eye to the keyhole, that's what it's like to spend your nights within Nights at Rodanthe. Our first encounter with the redoubtable Nicholas Sparks has our home fires burning bright, with our tightest, least-digressive episode ever!* An oft-told tale, this, in which a nice woman snaps her daughter out of a funk by telling her of her semi-tragic and fully doomed love story of years gone by. Hurricanes, estrangement, bad food, illicit, even forbidden, wine, these jam-packed Nights you won't soon forget. Probably. Anyway, this one's got more than just breakfast in bed, if you know what we're saying. Head to the lighthouse and get ready to give us a hand with the storm shutters, but forgive us if you end up thinking that strong winds aren't the only thing that blows around here, because it's time to shake off your daze and enter the pulsing, dryer-sheet scented night...Nights of Rodanthe, that is. Also! Bonus grumpiness and us coming as close as we ever will do to handling an often-requested book that we wouldn't check out with your library card. Also also! J. references Clsn's jam; Clsn possibly nearly completes the Plot in 60 Seconds challenge; food saftey and cooler packing is discussed at longer length than you'd expect. *Note: Not guaranteed.** **Note: Not even particularly likely.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Brian this week about his Emmy nomination for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, his summer camp background that got him into film and his collaborations with Lee Daniels and John Cameron Mitchell. By the end it turns a bit into an impromptu gushing about his work on NBC's Kings and a promo for his new film We the Animals, which is in theaters now. GO SEE IT. You can see Brian's work next in the upcoming Tamara Jenkins film Private Life, which will world premiere at the New York Film Festival next month. There also might be a bit of tea spilled on an upcoming sequel to a gay classic.  This interview runs just shy of 37m with music. Tonight we welcome fan favorites Chris Altice and Christian Garzone from the hit PBS Series CARRIER. Some would argue CARRIER is closest thing we have ever seen into the world of life on board a Carrier. Join us as we chat with Chris (minute 13), who we watched on the flight deck in his red shirt loading ordinance. We got to know this young father-to-be and rooted for him during his agonizing girlfriend experience. Also, we welcome the humorous Christian Garzone (minute 47). His homemade videos with side-kick Phil gave us a unique insight into their world inside the ship. Christian was a breath of fresh air during series and was the 1st person our fans requested. We’ll hear from both Chris and Christian on what it was like on board during the filming, their thoughts on how well or truthful the series depicts Navy life on board a Carrier, what they are doing now and much more. We are also announcing the winners of our *Nights in Rodanthe* by Nicholas Sparks Book Contest (minute 80)! As always we’ll be taking your questions and your calls.
