Azazel Jacobs' HIS THREE DAUGHTERS is, like Tamara Jenkins' THE SAVAGES, a film about the heartbreaking experience of caring for an aging parent, but even more so it is, also like the other film in the pairing, about adult siblings reuniting and renegotiating their relationships under those fraught conditions. We're decidedly more mixed on Jacobs' film, however, which often plays like a stage adaptation — at times that works, at others it doesn't, and we talk through both in the first half of this discussion. Then we bring THE SAVAGES back in to consider how each film is shaped by its relative proximity to the end of life, their overlapping perspectives on professional caretakers and those who deal with death for a living, and the realism and usefulness of their pop-cultural reference points. And in Your Next Picture Show we take a brief tour of Tamara Jenkins's short but mighty feature filmography to date.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE SAVAGES, HIS THREE DAUGHTERS, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Caring for an elderly or infirm parent is a common experience that is less commonly depicted on screen, particularly with a comedic bent, which is why Azazal Jacobs' new HIS THREE DAUGHTERS inspired us to revisit the 2007 dramedy THE SAVAGES, which writer-director Tamara Jenkins drew from her own experiences dealing with a father with dementia. Much of the film's success lies with the performances of Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as siblings whose estranged father's deteriorating condition serves as catalyst for their own midlife crises, and a script that trusts in their performances to convey the situation's unexpected yet accurate mingling of tragedy and comedy. Then in Feedback we get negative, with one listener writing in about why a recent film we covered “broke” them, and another inviting us to share the beloved films that we just can't help but dislike. This week we're excited to present a conversation with His Three Daughters director Azazel Jacobs and cast members Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon during a special advance screening at FLC. His Three Daughters is now streaming on Netflix. From writer-director Azazel Jacobs comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father's apartment—much to the chagrin of her half-sisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings over the course of three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home.  This conversation was moderated by filmmaker Tamara Jenkins.

Jeremy Saulnier's REBEL RIDGE puts a distinctly 2020s spin on the one-man army formula established in the era-defining ‘80s action hit FIRST BLOOD, resulting in a film with more nuance, less firepower, and equal amounts of ass-kicking. We parse that equation a bit more in-depth in our spoiler-light discussion of REBEL RIDGE, before bringing back FIRST BLOOD to see how the decades between the two films shape their respective ideas about escalation of force, small-town policing, and genre politics. And for Your Next Picture Show, we offer a quick-hit ranking of Saulnier's filmography to date. THE SAVAGES (directed by Tamara Jenkins, who also directed SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS, and starrring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman) is an often poignant comedy about adult siblings trying to get care for their elderly father, who suffers from dementia. That might not be the most expected pick from a director whose new horror film, IMMACULATE, now has  the distinction of being NEON's highest grossing opening weekend ever. But it's the movie that speaks most directly to an all-to-common, yet rarely depicted phase of life -- one that Michael found himself in right at the moment his Hollywood career hit its stride. After this moving and open conversation, Jordan has one quick thing about GODZILLA X KONG.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Michael Mohan

We had a hard time finding movies for each other to see from 2007, as it was a banner year in movie history and we'd already seen a lot. Brad recommended that Jake watch "The Man from Earth," a microbudget film with a unique sci-fi conceit and no special effects at all. Jake gave Brad "The Savages," Tamara Jenkins' second film, starring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as disaffected siblings forced to united to take care of their ailing, estranged father. 2007 is considered by many to be the best year in modern movie history. "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men" dominated at the Oscars, while "Zodiac" and "Michael Clayton" established enduring legacies. We had a lot of fun discussing this year. Hosted by Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler Other movies discussed in this episode: Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), Along Came Polly (2004), Juno (2007), Stardust (2007), Young Adult (2011), Coherence (2013), the Infinite Man (2014), the Man from Earth: Holocene (2017), Freaks (2018), Private Lives (2018), Tully (2018), and Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)

The story of Tamara Jenkins' Slums of Beverly Hills feels very lived in with authentic characters and situations. It makes sense that there's a semi-autobiographical element to her film. How well does it hold up over two decades after its release? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Coming of Age Debuts series with Jenkins' 1998 film Slums of Beverly Hills. What do we think of Slums of Beverly Hills? Jenkins has only made three feature films unfortunately, but we've liked what we've seen. (In full disclosure, Andy worked on The Savages so might be biased.) She's talked about how challenging our system is for women directors, which may speak to her low output. The struggles of Vivian in this film, perfectly played by Natasha Lyonne, carry the story. As she literally comes of age (we start the film with her dad getting her her first bra), we feel her struggles to adapt to her changing body. And living with her dad and two brothers makes her life frustrating. Speaking of her family, Alan Arkin, David Krumholtz, and Eli Marienthal are perfect. They feel like a real family. When Marisa Tomei enters as their crazy cousin Rita, it just fits. Rita and Vivian have a great cousin relationship involving things like talking in gibberish and lessons in vibrators. Oh, and plenty of breast talk too. Jenkins rides a strong line of comedy with the dramatic moments, and it all works. We love the concept of the film riding along the fringes of Beverly Hills. It's a period piece that always feels authentic. We have a great time with this one, so check it out then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! Inspired by Tamara Jenkins's critically acclaimed Private Life, detailing a husband and wife's struggles to have a child, Doctor Juni sets forth some steep psychological challenges that threaten any happy resolution to many Orthodox couples faced with the same quandary confronting the fictional characters in the film.Rabbi Kivelevitz points out that adoption was originally restricted to orphans and viewed solely as an act of kindness to abandoned children. The discussants outline the religious, cultural, and psychological aspects of the Fertility Anguish Syndrome.Kivelevitz eloquently depicts the prevalent pain of childlessness which he sees as a potential threat to the self-concept of some couples as it mitigates marital viability. This is especially true in cultures where childrearing is the cardinal purpose of marriage. Inspired by Tamara Jenkins’s critically acclaimed Private Life, detailing a husband and wife's struggles to have a child, Doctor Juni sets forth some steep psychological challenges that threaten any happy resolution to many Orthodox couples faced with the same quandary confronting the fictional characters in the film.Rabbi Kivelevitz points out that adoption was originally restricted to orphans and viewed solely as an act of kindness to abandoned children. This, in addition to the positive value children have on the richness of the marital relationship proper. On the flip side, Prof. Juni elaborates on the pernicious effects of mandates on any human endeavor. They are in agreement, however, that resentment will prove inevitable in reaction to the traumas often connected to IVF and adoption procedures, and will burst to the surface with negative repercussions.Prof. Juni is emphatic that there is always an underlying feeling of resentment on the part of adopted children. Kathryn Hahn is having a sustained ongoing moment and it's arguably been happening since 2013. That year, she starred in Jill Soloway's "Afternoon Delight," and while the response to that Sundance indie was muted, it arguably transformed her career, taking her out of supporting "crazy lady" comedic roles and into the place of lead in complex comedic dramas about female identity, desire and the yearning for much more. Hahn has become something of a muse for many female filmmakers and "Afternoon Delight" lead to terrific turns in Soloway's "Transparent," the overlooked, but short-lived series, "I Love Dick," and lead roles in Tamara Jenkins' "Private Life," and HBO's "Mrs. Fletcher" series from director Nicole Holofcener and author Tom Perrota (known for writing the novels of "Election" and "Little Children"). Hahn's latest two projects couldn't be more different. One is HBO's "I Know This Much Is True" from director Derek Cianfrance alongside Mark Ruffalo. The other is "Central Park," an animated AppleTV+ show from the makers of "Bob's Burgers." In our hour-long chat, we parsed all these topics, most of Hahn's entire career, and even touched a little upon "Wandavision," the upcoming Disney+ Marvel series that she has a role in. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

Since graduating from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Brian A. Kates has edited many acclaimed films, with 14 films selected to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and 5 films in Cannes. He has been honored with an Emmy Award for his work on Taking Chance, and an Emmy nomination for editing the pilot episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He also won two ACE Eddie Awards for his work on Bessie and Lackawanna Blues, in addition to two other Eddie Award nominations. His collaborators have included Andrew Dominik (Killing Them Softly), Dee Rees (Bessie), Joseph Cedar (Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer), Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger), Tamara Jenkins (Private Life and The Savages), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Jack Goes Boating), John Cameron Mitchell (How to Talk to Girls at Parties and Shortbus), Lee Daniels (Shadowboxer and The Butler), Nicole Kassell (The Woodsman), George C. Wolfe (Lackawanna Blues and Nights in Rodanthe), Moisés Kaufman (The Laramie Project), Ross Katz (Taking Chance), John Krokidas (Kill Your Darlings), and Jeremiah Zagar (We the Animals). In addition to his work in fiction, he was Jonathan Caouette's co-editor on the groundbreaking documentary Tarnation. His television work has included collaborations with Alfonso Cuarón (Believe), Bill Condon (The Big C), David Simon and Eric Overmeyer (Treme), and Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). He is currently finishing his third collaboration with John Cameron Mitchell, a 10-episode original audio musical, featuring the music of Bryan Weller and Mr. Mitchell, and a cast including Glenn Close, Patti LuPone, Cynthia Erivo, Ben Foster, Nakhane, Bridget Everett, Justin Vivian Bond, and Laurie Anderson, entitled Homunculus. I had the pleasure of chatting with Brian this week about his Emmy nomination for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, his summer camp background that got him into film and his collaborations with Lee Daniels and John Cameron Mitchell. By the end it turns a bit into an impromptu gushing about his work on NBC's Kings and a promo for his new film We the Animals, which is in theaters now. GO SEE IT. You can see Brian's work next in the upcoming Tamara Jenkins film Private Life, which will world premiere at the New York Film Festival next month. There also might be a bit of tea spilled on an upcoming sequel to a gay classic.  This interview runs just shy of 37m with music. Opening: "A Wonderful Day Like Today" from The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd (Original 1965 Broadway Cast)  Closing: "Girls Talk" by Dave Edmonds

This is a live Q&A session that followed our screening of Slums of Beverly Hills on April 24, 2013 (part of our 2 Good 2B 4Gotten series). Star Natasha Lyonne, director/writer Tamara Jenkins, co-star Kevin Corrigan and cinematographer Tom Richmond joined us to reminisce about the highs and lows of making a picture that was, and still feels, very personal to them all. Hearing this conversation is like eavesdropping on a family reunion. Tamara talks about some of the struggles of being a female filmmaker (and why "women in film" panels aren't all they're cracked up to be), while Natasha, expresses how being Tamara's stand-in for Slums made her feel about her future.Plus: Auditioning breast doubles, filming the vibrator dance scene, and learning how to fake an orgasm on camera.Whether you've never seen the movie or sleep with a VHS of it under your pillow, this is a conversation all indie film lovers will enjoy.
