In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explore the sensations of pain and pleasure, explaining how they are sensed in the body and interpreted by the brain as well as methods to control their intensity. I discuss both the hardwired mechanisms and subjective factors that shape an individual's perception of pain and pleasure. I also explain why pain thresholds vary from person to person and discuss various treatments for pain management such as acupuncture and supplements. Finally, I explain the role of key neurochemicals like dopamine and serotonin in mediating our experience of pain and pleasure. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. What follows is a relentless descent into forgotten cities, forbidden tech, and the ghosts that still haunt the living. It's the UConn Popcast, and when did we really start dreaming about the promise, and the danger, of artificial intelligence? When ChatGPT was released in 2022? When IBMs Deep Blue defeated Chess world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997? When Stanley Kubrick introduced us to HAL 9000 in 1968? Or perhaps you think it was much earlier. Maybe we have had the dream of AI since the development of the first computers by Von Neumann, or even earlier, by Babbage. Or maybe you think the dawning of the age of science itself is ground zero for our thoughts of artificial intelligence. Kevin LaGrandeur traces our dreams - and fears - of artificial intelligence back way further than this. LaGrandeur argues that ideas of artificial slaves can be found in the writing of Aristotle, in the Renaissance-era idea of the Homunculus, in the Jewish legend of the Golem. LaGrandeur, a longtime professor at the New York Institute of Technology and now an independent scholar and Director of Research at the Global AI Ethics Institute, has more than 25 years of experience teaching, writing and speaking about technology and society. We were thrilled to be able to have a wide-ranging conversation with Professor LaGrandeur about his pathbreaking research on Androids and intelligent networks in early modern culture, and his current work on the ethics and implications of AI. The Alchemist subclass has leveled up its potion game, proving you can now brew life-saving elixirs faster than most of us can make a cup of coffee. Meanwhile, the Armorer subclass is out here making Dreadnought armor that essentially says, "I'm big, I'm bad, and I take up two squares now." The real drama, though, lies in the rules chaos of pulling, pushing, and grappling mechanics. It turns out grappling is now about as effective as arguing with your DM, and brain extractions have been upgraded to dark comedy gold. But hey, the Artillerist got an upgrade, so you can still blow stuff up while debating whether guns belong in your magical fantasy world. Spoiler: Someone's Homunculus Roomba is going to have to clean up the mess. Tune in for the laughs, stay for the puns, and remember: one day, Vicious Mockery might become a bonus action, and then no adventurer's ego will be safe. Links Eberron: Rising from the Last War (affiliate link) Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (affiliate link) Unearthed Arcana: Revised Artificer Melancon: A Grimoire Tale (affiliate link) https://www.somanyrobots.com/s/Spellbound-Sea-Sample.pdf Summary and Takeaways In this hilarious deep-dive into Dungeons & Dragons' Unearthed Arcana, the hosts embark on a chaotic yet insightful exploration of all things Artificer. The episode begins with a lively discussion of the revamped Alchemist subclass, where the once-mediocre healer is now brewing elixirs that can practically bring characters back from the brink of death—or at least keep them upright long enough to face their next poor life choice. Potions are now crafted faster than ever, which might explain why Alchemists seem perpetually caffeinated. Shifting gears, the hosts don their metaphorical armor (and probably some literal helmets) to dissect the updated Armorer subclass. With options like Dreadnought armor, which makes you bigger and scarier in combat, and Perfected Armor, which adds a splash of damage and utility, there's something for everyone—unless you liked the old customization options, in which case, condolences. The new armor replication system is simpler, but as one host laments, "simplicity is the enemy of shiny customization."  Things take a turn for the absurd as the conversation veers into gameplay mechanics. Pulling and pushing creatures might sound straightforward, but apparently, it's a one-way ticket to rules-lawyering chaos. Grappling, once a staple of wrestling matches gone awry, now feels about as effective as trying to hug a gelatinous cube. And then there's the unforgettable mention of "character brain extraction," which the hosts agree is equal parts horrifying and comedy gold, depending on which side of the dice you're on. Next, the spotlight shines on the Artillerist subclass, which has undergone upgrades that make it deadlier—and debatably more explosive—than ever. This sparks a lively debate about the coexistence of magic and technology in fantasy worlds, with one host arguing for the poetic elegance of wands and the other championing the raw, chaotic energy of boomsticks. Meanwhile, Battlesmith fans will be pleased to know the Steel Defender is now more useful, although one host quips, "It still won't do your taxes." The humor continues with a look at the Homunculus spell, a new addition to the Artificer arsenal that lets players conjure a small, slightly unsettling creature to assist in adventures. One host imagines it as "a glorified Roomba with attitude," while the other is already brainstorming scenarios where the Homunculus saves the day—or ruins it spectacularly.  The episode rounds off with a mailbag segment tackling the question: which cantrips should become bonus actions? This sparks a flurry of debate, with one host suggesting Firebolt could add some sizzle to multi-action rounds and the other lamenting that bonus-action Vicious Mockery would lead to endless pun wars at the table.  Throughout the episode, the hosts share their hopes, dreams, and mixed feelings about the future of D&D. They long for innovative subclasses, yearn for a return to the rich settings of Eberron, and urge designers to embrace the weird, wonderful flavor that makes the game magical. All this is delivered with a heaping dose of humor, proving once again that no matter how complex the rules or contentious the changes, the real joy of D&D is in laughing through it all with friends. Everyone's horny and sexual function is for every body, AND there are some unique considerations for folks living with disability when it comes to personal pleasure. This week, Anna breaks down a literary review that discusses the historical context for studying sex and disability, as well as the positive aspects and particular challenges to sex positivity. A mind-opening conversation is had about how our misconceptions of what disability feels and looks like may be limiting how we see the sexual identity of others, and even perpetuate it unconsciously. The conversation also covers Jeremie's new nightmare, the Homunculus, as well as a heartwarming anecdote about a real best friend facilitating a sexy session for his buddy. Listen to get smarter. Was Jesus Christ a homunculus? A homunculus, or "little person," is a small human being popularized in sixteenth-century alchemy and nineteenth-century fiction. It has been historically referred to as the creation of a miniature, fully-formed human. The homunculus first appears by name in alchemical writings attributed to Paracelsus in his De natura rerum, which outlines his method for creating homunculi. Joel is joined by Juan Ayala from The Juan On Juan Podcast to explore what ancient alchemists hypothesized about Jesus as the divine homunculus. Juan takes us down a road of miraculous births and artificial messiahs such as Marduk, Horus, Melchizedek, Dionysus, Alexander the Great, and Vishnu, to show how this theory of the divine homunculus has been intertwined throughout all religions and cultures. Lastly, Joel and Juan look at the validity of Yeshua Himself being a homunculus or if what these alchemists were trying to create was just an inversion of the perfect version emanating from the Father. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: [Intuitive self-models] 1. Preliminaries, published by Steven Byrnes on September 19, 2024 on LessWrong. 1.1 Summary & Table of Contents This is the first of a series of eight blog posts, which I'll be serializing over the next month or two. (Or email or DM me if you want to read the whole thing right now.) Here's an overview of the whole series, and then we'll jump right into the first post! 1.1.1 Summary & Table of Contents - for the whole series This is a rather ambitious series of blog posts, in that I'll attempt to explain what's the deal with consciousness, free will, hypnotism, enlightenment, hallucinations, flow states, dissociation, akrasia, delusions, and more. The starting point for this whole journey is very simple: The brain has a predictive (a.k.a. self-supervised) learning algorithm. This algorithm builds generative models (a.k.a. "intuitive models") that can predict incoming data. It turns out that, in order to predict incoming data, the algorithm winds up not only building generative models capturing properties of trucks and shoes and birds, but also building generative models capturing properties of the brain algorithm itself. Those latter models, which I call "intuitive self-models", wind up including ingredients like conscious awareness, deliberate actions, and the sense of applying one's will. That's a simple idea, but exploring its consequences will take us to all kinds of strange places - plenty to fill up an eight-post series! Here's the outline: Post 1 (Preliminaries) gives some background on the brain's predictive learning algorithm, how to think about the "intuitive models" built by that algorithm, how intuitive self-models come about, and the relation of this whole series to Philosophy Of Mind. Post 2 ( Awareness ) proposes that our intuitive self-models include an ingredient called "conscious awareness", and that this ingredient is built by the predictive learning algorithm to represent a serial aspect of cortex computation. I'll discuss ways in which this model is veridical (faithful to the algorithmic phenomenon that it's modeling), and ways that it isn't. I'll also talk about how intentions and decisions fit into that framework. Post 3 ( The Homunculus ) focuses more specifically on the intuitive self-model that almost everyone reading this post is experiencing right now (as opposed to the other possibilities covered later in the series), which I call the Conventional Intuitive Self-Model. In particular, I propose that a key player in that model is a certain entity that's conceptualized as actively causing acts of free will. Following Dennett, I call this entity "the homunculus", and relate that to intuitions around free will and sense-of-self. Post 4 ( Trance ) builds a framework to systematize the various types of trance, from everyday "flow states", to intense possession rituals with amnesia. I try to explain why these states have the properties they do, and to reverse-engineer the various tricks that people use to induce trance in practice. Post 5 ( Dissociative Identity Disorder ) (a.k.a. "multiple personality disorder") is a brief opinionated tour of this controversial psychiatric diagnosis. Is it real? Is it iatrogenic? Why is it related to borderline personality disorder (BPD) and trauma? What do we make of the wild claim that each "alter" can't remember the lives of the other "alters"? Post 6 ( Awakening / Enlightenment / PNSE ) is a type of intuitive self-model, typically accessed via extensive meditation practice. It's quite different from the conventional intuitive self-model. I offer a hypothesis about what exactly the difference is, and why that difference has the various downstream effects that it has. Post 7 (Hearing Voices, and Other Hallucinations) talks about factors contributing to hallucinations - although I argue ...

In this episode, Katie Crane delves into the essence of effective communication and cueing in Pilates. Katie Crane underscores the importance of comprehending the brain-body synergy for precise cueing. She elaborates on the homunculus concept, illustrating how the brain processes sensory and motor inputs. Fascial lines play a pivotal role in cueing, with cues from feet to head enhancing movement quality. Through diverse Pilates exercise examples, Katie stresses the significance of acknowledging clients' sensory experiences. To enrich clients' exercise execution, it emphasizes the importance of tactile, visual, and auditory cueing in Pilates instruction. It emphasizes the importance of using resonant language and imagery tailored to each client, fostering a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.   Key Takeaways: Effective cueing in Pilates requires an understanding of how the brain and body work together. The homunculus is a representation of how the brain processes sensory and motor information. Cueing from the feet to the head can improve movement and engage the entire body. Considering the sensory experience of clients is important in cueing and communication. Tactile cueing plays a significant role in Pilates instruction, but it should be used appropriately and with the client's consent. Cueing the most distal body parts, such as the hands and feet, can help improve overall movement and body alignment. Visual cues, such as using mirrors or props, can enhance the client's spatial understanding and improve their performance. Auditory cues, including tone of voice and music selection, can create a positive and engaging atmosphere in the studio. Using language and imagery that is relatable to the client's interests and experiences can enhance their understanding and motivation. Creating an inclusive and comfortable environment is essential for effective communication and client progress in Pilates. Ready to transform your Pilates teaching with effective cueing techniques? The prospect of digital replicas is growing in popularity and extends from voice mirroring scams to fully communicative dead relatives. The FTC warned in march that AI-voice scams are getting more sophisticated and had previously noted that scammers can use the technology to “generate spear-phishing emails, fake websites, fake posts, fake profiles, and fake consumer reviews, or to help create malware, ransomware, and prompt injection attacks. They can also use AI for “imposter scams, extortion, and financial fraud.” The next step up are applications predicting death dates, AI girlfriends, and DNA testing companies, that all require immense personal data to function. Some companies are now offering, for a price, to replicate your loved ones in a digital environment through all their personal data. Researchers from Cambridge are warning that this could cause users to be both digitally haunted and also psychologically damaged or tortured because they will not be fully processing the grief of loss. They say use of such deadbots could result in people feeling as if they are being “stalked by the dead”, especially because of the contracts that must be signed and the use of these replicas to advertise to users as their deceased relative. In essence, we are selling our love ones' soul so they will never rest in peace. We are sending them to a digital purgatory, seeding and feeding the other side, and manifesting a techno-Tulpa, or digital homunculi.-FREE ARCHIVE & RSS: https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-secret-teachingsTwitter: https://twitter.com/TST___RadioFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretteachingsWEBSITE (BOOKS, RESUBSCRIBE for early show access): http://thesecretteachings.infoPaypal: rdgable@yahoo.comCashApp: $rdgableBuy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/tstradioSUBSCRIBE TO NETWORK: http://aftermath.mediaEMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.com

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: When is a mind me?, published by Rob Bensinger on April 17, 2024 on LessWrong. xlr8harder writes: In general I don't think an uploaded mind is you, but rather a copy. But one thought experiment makes me question this. A Ship of Theseus concept where individual neurons are replaced one at a time with a nanotechnological functional equivalent. Are you still you? Presumably the question xlr8harder cares about here isn't semantic question of how linguistic communities use the word "you", or predictions about how whole-brain emulation tech might change the way we use pronouns. Rather, I assume xlr8harder cares about more substantive questions like: If I expect to be uploaded tomorrow, should I care about the upload in the same ways (and to the same degree) that I care about my future biological self? Should I anticipate experiencing what my upload experiences? If the scanning and uploading process requires destroying my biological brain, should I say yes to the procedure? My answers: Yeah. Yep. Yep, this is no big deal. A productive day for me might involve doing some work in the morning, getting a sandwich at Subway, destructively uploading my brain, then texting some friends to see if they'd like to catch a movie after I finish answering e-mails. _(ツ)_/ If there's an open question here about whether a high-fidelity emulation of me is "really me", this seems like it has to be a purely verbal question, and not something that I would care about at reflective equilibrium. Or, to the extent that isn't true, I think that's a red flag that there's a cognitive illusion or confusion still at work. There isn't a special extra "me" thing separate from my brain-state, and my precise causal history isn't that important to my values. I'd guess that this illusion comes from not fully internalizing reductionism and naturalism about the mind. I find it pretty natural to think of my "self" as though it were a homunculus that lives in my brain, and "watches" my experiences in a Cartesian theater. On this intuitive model, it makes sense to ask, separate from the experiences and the rest of the brain, where the homunculus is. ("OK, there's an exact copy of my brain-state there, but where am I?") E.g., consider a teleporter that works by destroying your body, and creating an exact atomic copy of it elsewhere. People often worry about whether they'll "really experience" the stuff their brain undergoes post-teleport, or whether a copy will experience it instead. "Should I anticipate 'waking up' on the other side of the teleporter? Or should I anticipate Oblivion, and it will be Someone Else who has those future experiences?" This question doesn't really make sense from a naturalistic perspective, because there isn't any causal mechanism that could be responsible for the difference between "a version of me that exists at 3pm tomorrow, whose experiences I should anticipate experiencing" and "an exact physical copy of me that exists at 3pm tomorrow, whose experiences I shouldn't anticipate experiencing". Imagine that the teleporter is located on Earth, and it sends you to a room on a space station that looks and feels identical to the room you started in. This means that until you exit the room and discover whether you're still on Earth, there's no way for you to tell whether the teleporter worked. But more than that, there will be nothing about your brain that tracks whether or not the teleporter sent you somewhere (versus doing nothing). There isn't an XML tag in the brain saying "this is a new brain, not the original"! There isn't a Soul or Homunculus that exists in addition to the brain, that could be the causal mechanism distinguishing "a brain that is me" from "a brain that is not me". There's just the brain-state, with no remainder. All of the same functional brain-states occur whether yo...

We've all heard of the placebo effect, so we know with certainty that our minds have healing abilities. But how powerful is it really?    In this episode of Biohacking Superhuman Performance, I chat with Brandy Gillmore about her life-changing injury and how she healed herself with her mind. We discuss the power of positive reinforcement, the importance of repetition in creating new positive neuropathways, and how emotions influence healing. It's important to be careful with how you talk to yourself so that you're not reinforcing negative energy. Our conversation covers biophotons, and their implications in healing due to the effect it has on cellular proliferation.    Overall, this episode offers guidance for working on your health outside of conventional methods and the power our emotions have over the body.    Brandy Gillmore is a motivational speaker, author, and consultant. Her expertise began after her own devastating illness when she found herself somewhere she never thought she'd be — disabled, spending most of her days in bed, on various forms of morphine, and yet still in extreme pain.  For years, one doctor after another told her there was nothing they could do for her. That's when Brandy became determined to get her life back. She spent several years studying and researching and eventually began to discover key insights that became life-changing. Since her incredible recovery, Brandy works with people worldwide to understand the profound impact that stress and emotions can have on their bodies and their lives.   Thank you to our sponsors for making this episode possible: BodyBio: Visit BodyBio.com today and get 15% on your first order with code Nathalie   Berkeley Life: Consumers may register and place an order using my code NIDDBL for 10% off at berkeleylife.com   Inside Tracker: Use code NIDDAM to save 20% at https://www.insidetracker.com    Find more from Brandy Gillmore: Website: https://brandygillmore.com/  Ted Talk: https://youtu.be/5dEbqRYqY_0?si=COa00XWw3s1zoGQY  Podcast: Heal Yourself Change Your Life Instagram: @brandygillmore  Book Coming Soon: Master Your Mind & Energy To Heal Your Body (Kindle, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)    Love what you heard on this episode?  Special Offer for Listeners of this Podcast: get a free 90 Minute Training with Brandy Gillmore plus a special offer - go to brandygillmore.com/Nat-Gift  Find more from Nathalie: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmholC48MqRC50UffIZOMOQ  Join Nat's Membership Community: https://www.natniddam.com/bsp-community  Sign up for Nats Newsletter: https://landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/i7d5m0  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nathalieniddam/  Website: www.NatNiddam.com    Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/biohackingsuperhumanperformance    What We Discuss:  (1:30) Healing with the mind - Gillmore's Work (3:00) Life changing injury  (8:30) Placebo effect and belief (12:00) Open-Label Placebo Studies  (15:00) How emotions influence healing (21:00) Amplifying emotions (28:00) Creating positive neuropathways  (34:00) The shift from effort to full healing (38:00) Coaching others in mind healing (42:00) Biophotons (54:00) Homunculus map  (56:00) Pain relief through mindset  (1:08:00) The 4 minute mile principle   (1:11:00) Find more from Brandy Gillmore    Key Takeaways: When it comes to healing with the mind, it takes real mental change. You must work on your patterned way of thinking, reinforcing good or positive energy. You can create positive neuropathways in your brain to fight the negative. Working on optimism helps, but you must amplify the emotions and really feel it.  Our subconscious is a very powerful thing. How you speak to yourself can affect how you live and feel. By amplifying your emotions, you can help influence your subconscious by delivering a different message. Repetition helps develop these patterns, which in turn can enhance your healing.  Biophotons are light particles that are generated within the body and are constantly radiated from the body's surface. These spontaneous emissions are thought to be associated with the generation of free radicals due to energy metabolic processes. Research shows biophoton emissions affect cellular proliferation, meaning it should be able to aid in healing. Some studies have shown that emotions influence biophotons. But more studies are currently being done.
