Thanksgiving's Big Box Office Feast, Deadpool's NSFW Joke Cut By Disney

It was a record-breaking holiday weekend at the box office for theaters in the U.S., with a $420 million 5-Day Thanksgiving total, which smashed 2018's previous record of $315.6 million. Lukewarm critic reviews for newcomer Moana 2 did little to dissuade families from attending in droves; by itself the animated sequel broke the record for a 5-Day Thanksgiving opening with its $221 million gross. Not to be left on the sidelines, last week's contenders Wicked and Gladiator II continued to bring in impressive numbers, grossing $117.5 million and $44 million, for second and third place, respectively. In its second weekend, Wicked also became the highest grossing movie based on a Broadway musical and claimed the third best 5-day take for any film. Barry Keoghan is set to portray Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes' Beatles movies, according to the Beatle himself. Mendes is planning to direct four biopics, each dedicated to a band member: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Starr. All of the movies will be released separately in theaters by Sony Pictures. While several stars have been rumored to be circling the splashy project, including Paul Mescal and Joseph Quinn, no deals have been made with any of the cast.  On The Town podcast, Dune director Denis Villeneuve spoke on why he doesn't want to direct a Star Wars film. Speaking on The Empire Strikes Back, he said “I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with Star Wars. I mean, The Empire Strikes Back is the movie that I anticipated the most in my life. I saw the movie a billion times onscreen. I was traumatized by The Empire Strikes Back. I adore Star Wars. The problem is that it all derailed in 1983 with Return of the Jedi ... still today, the Ewoks. It turned out to be a comedy for kids. … Star Wars became crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic, it seemed like a recipe, no more surprises. So, I'm not dreaming to do a Star Wars because it feels like the code is very codified." Although Disney allowed Ryan Reynolds to exercise a high degree of creative control on this summer's Deadpool and Wolverine, the official script posted to Disney's FYC website has revealed the one joke that the company cut from the film. The line, spoken by Deadpool reads: "“F***! What, we can't even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse cock in my throat.” Although the majority of the line stayed, the last sentence was changed to: “I got Pinocchio jammed in my ass, and he's lying like crazy.” Disney also released a new trailer for its $200 million live-action, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot-led, reimagining of Snow White, due to hit theaters March 25, 2025. In heated competition, Netflix has optioned the rights to Callie Hart's fantasy romance BookTok phenom novel Quicksilver. Deadline hears this is a 7-figure deal. During a tech media conference, Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming chief JB Perrette revealed some upcoming targeted dates for Max streaming properties, mentioning that season 3 of The White Lotus will debut in February and discussed a spring 2025 premiere for “The Last of Us” Season 2, a late 2025 launch for “Game of Thrones” prequel “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” and an anticipated 2026 debut for “Euphoria” Season 3. Perrette also revealed that the anticipated Harry Potter series is currently in the casting stage for its 3 lead characters and will target a 2027 release window, rather than a 2026 one. The CW's Arrowverse of DC characters, which kicked off in 2012, has officially ended after Lois & Superman aired its finale, December 2.

If you frequent Collider Ladies Night, you're likely well aware that I'm a massive Scream fan. The franchise heavily contributed to making me the movie lover I am today, and it's also a big reason why I pursued a career in the industry. Given that, it'll probably come as no surprise that I especially love seeing Scream alum soar in film and television, and one particular Scream star is having a game-changing 2024. It's Scream 2022's Mikey Madison, who's currently in the midst of an awards season run courtesy of her electrifying performance in Sean Baker's Anora. The Palme d'Or winner stars Madison as Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn who finds herself in the middle of a rather unusual and frequently madcap adventure of sorts after meeting Vanya, the son of a Russian billionaire. After hiring Ani a few times, Vanya offers her a larger sum to be exclusive for the week. During that week, the two impulsively marry in Vegas. Convinced the love is genuine, Ani is excited to begin her new life as Vanya's wife, but when his parents find out about their marriage, they send their henchmen to annul it, an assignment that ultimately sparks a wild chase through the streets of New York. With Anora continuing its successful run in theaters while its awards season buzz builds, Madison joined me for a special FYC edition of Collider Ladies Night to break down the pivotal career moments that teed her up for success headlining a likely Best Picture nominee. John Wyatt, the founder of Cinespia, joins host Jessica Kantor for this week's episode of Raising Cinephiles.Founded by entrepreneur John Wyatt in 2002, Cinespia has built an avid online following of well over 250,000 fans through its eighteen-year history. The organization also hosts screenings, concerts, and film premieres at classic movie palaces in downtown Los Angeles.Wyatt attributes the success of Cinespia to his belief that “there's a need in L.A. for people to get together and watch films with each other. That's how these films were meant to be seen: on the big screen with a large audience, emoting, screaming, and laughing. The picnics, the DJs, the community experience, these things transform the movie-going experience.”Over the years, Cinespia has also become a popular attraction for Hollywood directors, producers, and actors. In 2014, Cinespia produced the annual Cinefamily fundraiser with Team Downey, showcasing the films of Robert Downey, Sr., with a benefit hosted by Louis CK at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Cinespia's stellar array of guest appearances to present the films being shown also include Drew Barrymore, Patricia Arquette, Lena Waithe, director Cameron Crowe, Paul Reubens, and Questlove.Past notable events include the FYC screening event for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the premiere of Wonderstruck, and activations for Academy Award-nominated films such as Suspiria and Beautiful Boy.Films discussed:King KongWinnie The PooClash of the TitansRaiders of the Lost ArkThe 400 BlowsBlade RunnerStar WarsTampopoManhunterLa Bande Du DrugstoreElviraThe ShinningGooniesBreakfast at Tiffany'sThe Wizard of OzThe Lego MovieSpongeBob SquarepantsMr Show New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

Joining us live and fresh off a screening at Cannes Film Festival and a successful theatrical opening weekend is writer/director/editor PATRICIA CHICA to discuss her award-winning film MONTREAL GIRLS. A wonderful coming-of-age story of 20-somethings in the artistic community of Montreal, with a diverse blend of cultures, ethnicity, characters, and generations, MONTREAL GIRLS is a refreshing new film in the genre. A debut feature directorial for Patricia, she brings a very special energy to the film, both onscreen and behind the lens. A fascinating conversation as she discusses her lengthy pre-production, curated casting, using metaphysical energy and individual chakras in preparing her actors, designing the color palette of the film, and so much more. AND – – it's Emmy Awards season and FYC campaigns are kicking in which means interviews with some hot contenders, starting with Editor CHAD GALSTER talking Season 5-Part One of YELLOWSTONE. From the land to politics to horses and cattle to the seething hatred between Beth and Jamie, it's Chad and his team who find the balance that builds the tension, celebrates the romance of Rip and Beth, showcases the land, and keep us on the edge of our seats wanting more. Chad and I go deep discussing the editing of YELLOWSTONE Season 5 Part One with the various eight episodes complete with some editing challenges and opportunities thanks to cattle, branding events, live concerts, and the optics of John Dutton as governor, as well as interstitial transitions, aerials and montages of the landscape, and the contrast and opportunities presented with the introduction of the 6666 Ranch in Texas, among others.
