As you've seen, Season 3 is dedicated to my father, Mike Jacox, who passed away late in 2021. I Love and miss you, Dad. Thank you, #CatchSitkaSeafoods and #ACMEHomes, for your continued support!!!Today, we sit down with Sgt. Anthon Anderson who shares one of the most amazing stories I've ever seen or heard. I was fortunate to hear about Anthony on The Revenue Builders Podcast hosted by John Kaplan and John McMahon. After hearing about Anthony's story, I had to go and watch the documentary that features him, and his friend Tom Voss called, Almost Sunrise where they walked from Wisconsin to California. Not only is Anthony doing amazing things to bring awareness to Project Welcome Home Troops, but he has also founded a beard oil company (yes, I'm a customer) called Lit Beard Co.As you will hear, few can understand what happens in a war unless you've been in the middle of one. Anthony talks in depth about what "moral injury" is and how our veteran's experiences often go unnoticed and untreated. We explore how Anthony's challenges affected him as a father, and you will hear how being vulnerable is a HUGE strength for him. Anthony shares why we as fathers must continue to lean in on our vulnerability, and model the story and behavior we want to see. I hope you all enjoy this episode and find ways to support Anthony and his mission. Tom Voss is not your average Joe, not by a long shot. After serving with a scout sniper platoon in Iraq, he found that life as a civilian just wasn't the same. After almost making an irreversible life choice, Tom decided he needed to start processing things in a healthy way. He and a fellow veteran decided to go for a walk, a long walk, 2700 miles long. Their trek was documented in the film, Almost Sunrise, and this was the beginning of his journey of healing. Tom has since written a book, focused on meditation as a path to healing, and has started a non-profit helping others seek peace and healing through meditation. Tom's example and his efforts to promote self-care and mental health is transformative work for our veteran community in need of healing.
PTS or PTSD. You may have heard of it, but, did you know that many of our first responders and veterans suffer from it? During the service, many of the veterans (or almost all of them) had to see things that may be shocking for many of us. Today's guest, Tom Voss, has seen the most horrible tragedies and because of that, he developed PTS which led him to stumble upon the addictions field but he found the light in meditation. In this episode, we dove into subjects such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how this can affect really hard the people that suffer it, how veterans and first responders deal with PTSD, how meditation can take you out of addictions; the subjects that not everybody talks about. About Tom Voss: Tom Voss served on active duty in the United States Army for three years, from 2003 to 2006. He served as an infantry scout in the battalion scout-sniper platoon. In October of 2004, Tom was deployed to Mosul, Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. After returning home, Tom struggled with reintegration and was diagnosed with PTSD in 2008. After being pushed to the brink of suicide, Tom knew he had to do something to help himself heal. In 2013, he teamed up with fellow combat veteran Anthony Anderson to plan and execute a 2,700-mile trek from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Los Angeles, California. This journey was captured on film by Emmy®-nominated documentary filmmaker, Michael Collins. The film, which has enjoyed theatrical releases in New York and Los Angeles and been screened at dozens of film festivals nationwide, is called Almost Sunrise. In November 2017 Almost Sunrise was broadcast nationally as part of the P.O.V. documentary series on PBS, resulting in an Emmy nomination. Our guests today are Tom Voss and Rebecca Nguyen. Tom served as an infantry scout in the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment’s scout-sniper platoon. While deployed in Iraq, he participated in hundreds of combat and humanitarian missions and later returned home carrying invisible wounds of war - the memory of doing or witnessing things that went against his fundamental beliefs. This was not a physical injury that could heal with medication and time but a "moral injury" - a wound to the soul that eventually urged him toward suicide. Desperate for relief from the pain and guilt that haunted him, Tom embarked on a 2,700-mile journey across America, walking from Milwaukee to the Pacific Ocean with a fellow veteran. His journey across America was captured in the film, Almost Sunrise by Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Michael Collins. For his work empowering veterans to overcome moral injury, Tom has been featured in many media outlets. Tom Voss’ sister, Rebecca Nguyen is an author, travel writer, award-winning screenwriter, digital content strategist and the co-author of their new book, Where War Ends – A Combat Veteran’s 2,700 Mile Journey to Heal. The journey was documented in the Emmy-nominated film, Almost Sunrise, directed by Michael Collins. At the end of their riveting journey, Voss realizes he is really just beginning his healing as he finds an unexpected antidote to moral injury – meditation. Army Veteran Tom Voss and his buddy Anthony Anderson were featured in a 2017 documentary, Almost Sunrise. Tom joins the show to talk about why he felt that he needed to walk off the war and allow someone to film it.
Moral InjuryThe damage done to one's conscience or moral compass when that person perpetuates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress their own moral and ethical values and conducts of code. In 2004, 20-year-old Tom Voss was deployed to Mozul, Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was a part of a scout sniper platoon which meant that many days it was Tom's job to run towards gunfire as he gathered intel for military operations. He never expected to return home alive and early on in his deployment he surrendered his resistance to death. Tom endured relentless exposure to violence and sustained deep moral injury as a result of his wartime experience. When Tom returned home he was at a loss. He had no idea how to slide back into society after his experience at war. Like many war veterans, Tom turned to alcohol and drugs to support his return to normal life. He was diagnosed and treated for PTSD with pharmaceutical drugs that quieted his symptoms but not his deep moral wounds. For nearly a decade, Tom went through the motions of life while frequently abusing drugs and alcohol to a blackout state. He had very little will to live and high motivation to end his suffering. He knew he had to make a drastic move to save his own life. He knew he needed to begin processing the deep pain and grief that could not be medicated away. Tom decided to walk to California from Wisconsin in the last ditch effort to save his own life and raise awareness of the injuries of war. The Emmy winning documentary Almost Sunrise chronicles Tom's story and trek alongside fellow veteran Anthony Andersen. This gripping film gifts the audience with a truthful look into war and it's long-lasting effects while documenting the healing process of two men who risked everything for their country. Tom and fellow Army grunt Anthony Anderson decided to walk across the country to spread awareness about moral injury, a lesser known phenomenon that describes the experience of witnessing or participating in something that goes against deeply held morals or values. Tom starred in the documentary Almost Sunrise, which chronicled both the external and internal journey of healing. Rent or buy the film on iTunes, Amazon, and YouTube.
