We talk with Army combat veteran, and former Special Forces Public Affairs specialist, Aaron Knowles about “Shred the Stress” an organization he founded to bring the therapeutic benefits of the “Onewheel” electric skateboard, to veterans everywhere. We begin by tracking his days in Iraq and the events that nearly cost him his life. After surviving IED explosions and multiple life-changing moments, Knowles shared his transition from heavy vehicle operator to managing public affairs for units within the Special Operations community. But the joy of sharing our warfighter's stories, was complicated by his own war wounds.Knowles reveals the after-effects of traumatic brain injuries and describes living with PTSD. After trying to manage his mental health with the usual recommendations, he discovered an alternative tool that delivered powerful results- the Onewheel, electric skateboard.Knowles described how surfing the earth on this unique board made him stoked in ways medication could not. Realizing his immediate improvement, he founded a riding group for all veterans, “Shred the Stress”.Now based in Brooklyn, NY. we learn more about the group, its future, and how veterans across the country can get involved. For more, check out Shred the Stress: https://www.shredthestress.org/ Discover the Onewheel here: https://onewheel.com/For more military news and veteran stories see Connecting Vets here: https://www.audacy.com/connectingvets Connect with CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggs phil@connectingvets.com Follow: @philbriggsVet @connectingvetsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week on ‘Work Hates' we speak to military veteran turned comedian, Jarryd Goundrey. He served seven-years in the army and he has two busted knees, impaired hearing and a bucket load of stories to prove it. Jarryd has willingly been tear-gassed, he's almost drowned in a water submerged helicopter, and he's learnt exactly what to do if the Taliban capture him. He shed light on ‘military groupies' who are willing to jump into the boot of a car if it ended in a root at Duntroon, which Brett respected and Bron didn't. We haven't had a soldier on the podcast before, and this episode quickly became one of our all time favourites. Strap yourselves in, and enjoy this episode of ‘Work Hates'. Hosted on Acast. Today we're talking with Army veteran, entrepreneur Trace Miller, about his revolutionary fast food franchise "Konala Protein Bowls and Salads". We'll hear how it combines incredibly healthy food with the traditional drive thru, which is a staple of the American diet … yet slowly poisons us.Trace's inspiration for using whole foods as a cure for disease was not born in the gym. Food was an essential part of how he defeated Lennox-Gastaut epilepsy as a child. His toddler days were filled with seizures, even having to wear a helmet for protection against his bodies violent reaction to a parasite. American doctors offered no hope. Desperate for a cure, his family traveled outside the US for a rare treatment. However it came with a lifelong commitment to a pure and healthy diet. Trace describes the journey through his teenage years, which eventually led him to operating missile systems in the Army. Ironically, his time in the Army would inspire him to pursue personal passions like; scuba diving, stock investing and eventually business ownership.Miller describes how he (and his wife Jammie) initially founded a food truck and bar. But they had even bigger dreams. So building on their life experiences, they designed an alternative to unhealthy fast food franchises …, and Konala Protein Bowls and Salads was born. Hear how soon Konala will be coming to a town near you.Check out the fresh menu and franchise opportunities with Konala Protein Bowls and Salads here:https://konala.com/ To reach CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggsphil@connectingvets.comFollow@philbriggsVet@connectingvetsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For the last four and a half years we've brought you some of the most consequential independent voices in America. Celebrities, politicians, athletes. We've covered the whole gamut. And it's all built up to our 2024 Meet The Independent Candidates Series. It's the only place in media spotlighting independent veteran candidates from around the country at all levels. It's been critical to our mission and to the independent movement.  Highlighting these independents exposes them to a massive audience of like minded independent Americans. And we are honored to be that unique platform.  And the candidate in this episode is one that represents the movement, the independent spirit and his community as well as anyone we've met. He's Nick Batter, independent army veteran and candidate for Nebraska's State Legislature. He's an inspiring leader we know you're going to want to hear more from. It's the latest in our ongoing and groundbreaking “Meet the Independent Candidates” series and you can only get it here.  And your host Paul Rieckhoff digs in deeper to why Nebraska has become THE epicenter of the independent movement, punctuated by the massive announcement of a new poll showing Dan Osborn pulling ahead of Deb Fischer in his Nebraska Senate race we profiled in Episode 280. It's more momentum and more proof that the movement is growing. And on top of that there's been a massive spike in independent registrations in Pennsylvania this year. And that means that the 2024 Presidential election could rest in the hands of people like you. Independent Americans.  Rieckhoff also hits on Zelensky's big trip to the US, a national security issue you probably haven't heard about and why Pennsylvania is seeing a unique surge in voters registering as independents.  Every episode of Independent Americans is independent light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's content for the 51% of Americans that now call themselves independent. Always with a unique focus on national security, foreign affairs and military and vets issues. This is another pod to help you stay vigilant. Because vigilance is the price of democracy. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics and inspiration.  -Get extra content, connect with guests, events, merch discounts and support this show that speaks truth to power by joining us on Patreon.  -Check #LookForTheHelpers on Twitter. Collaboration and networking are instrumental in whatever success I enjoyed in my former corporate work life and now in my post career volunteer world.  Nancy LaBerge of Calgary's “Backyard Betties” was introduced to me via email by Linda Wilson, a former radio colleague….giving me the heads up Nancy and her group would be coming to Kansas City for the 2024 Folk Alliance International Conference.  Might there be any broadcast or performance opportunities for the Backyard Betties on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show?  Of course.  I soon came to know that Nancy, through her affiliation with the Calgary Songsmiths, had already come into my orbit through a songwriting collaboration exercise with our local Heartland Song Network members borne from a prior year's introduction at Folk Alliance. Joining Nancy LaBerge in three-part harmonies are Pip Hazel and Sarah Nielson on percussion with Mark Cassano on guitar.  The Backyard Betties are exceptionally talented with a strong commitment to connecting with their audiences through songs of love, life and loss while fostering the growth of emerging songwriters in their community.  Colin Cutler, an Army Vet, is a Greensboro, North Carolina-based singer-songwriter, folk musician, poet, and storyteller toting a banjo and guitar. Whether solo or with his band, Hot Pepper Jam, he is a wide-ranging performer whose musical roots draw from the breadth of American folk music—from Appalachian oldtime to blues to gospel to country to rock'n'roll—to form what No Depression has described as “one magnificent tapestry of roots music.”. In the course of curating a private showcase for a Folk Alliance International Conference, it becomes quite daunting to make decisions with so very many talented artists making submissions.  Colin Cutler made the decision easier for me to choose him when his bio revealed his latest work “Tarwater” was based upon the work of Georgia author Flannery O'Connor.  That was enough of a hook to send me down the rabbit hole of his background and discography.  Enjoy my conversations with and in studio performance by Backyard Betties and Colin Cutler.

Some people may not think of law enforcement and fitness together, but that may be a misconception as our guest on the pod this week is one example of a police officer that's in good shape. Now, he and coworkers are about to do a relay run across the state of Georgia – which he talks about on this episode! We also discuss why he started and has continued running (even through injury)…how health and fitness can be a big part of our family and legacy…what he learned from the Army, CrossFit…and his Christian faith through dangers on the force. Make sure to subscribe to this “Run The Race” podcast. (2:37) Sgt. Dan Lyon has been on the Columbus GA police force for 21 years, ran his first and only full marathon 14 years ago about a decade after being in the US Army. Dan talks first about police, fitness and donuts – how thoese things impact their ability to do their job like chasing suspects. Now, he and 7 fellow CPD officers are doing Run Across GA, which is 277 miles from Tybee Island to Columbus over 2 days on Memorial Day Weekend. He talks about the logistics like living out of a van, running amidst the heat and hills, why they're doing it and why it's fun. Note: he's had a torn ACL for 4 years – but still runs and does CrossFit regularly, just not other sports. (13:34) During his 4 years in the Army, Dan dives into what he did as a guidon carrier, what he learned from the military about being on time, fitness and more. (16:56) What are the pros and cons now of his dangerous job as a police officer? He and the guys will also rep their police force while running across GA with the team name “Got 1 Running” – which refers to a term used on their jobs. Here's their page: https://www.classy.org/team/572806. This husband and dad (19:12) also has advice for parents about being active with your children and family. He's bonded with his daughter, now 23, through running races together. (21:37) And he tells the story about getting into running, decades ago, thanks to his sister who had not played sports. Now, he hopes to inspire other officers to run or get in shape or at least to stop drinking sodas. Dan stays away from sugar…but why? (27:22) We also talk briefly about how his Christian faith fits into his job and the dangers he faces and the gratefulness of citizens…then close out chat with more on the causes that they're raising money for through Run Across Georgia: MercyMed of Columbus and House of Heroes. Here's where you can learn more and donate: https://www.classy.org/campaign/run-across-georgia-fundraising/c568793. (32:54) We also have flashbacks to previous podcast episodes #111 and #163 with people who did the SOLO Run Across Georgia in 2022 and '23, Sasuhia Hathaway and Kevin Schied. Take a listen to what they went through. (48:27) After a few of my thoughts on latest Masters winner and #1 golfer in the world Scottie Scheffler being courageously outspoken about Jesus, I close the pod in prayer.
