Jeremy and I go back almost 20 years. We worked private security together at the Kikkoman Soy Sauce Factory in Walworth, WI… and yeah, we probably had a little too much fun along the way. But behind that is a story of transition, resilience, and pushing through real hardship. Jeremy's journey isn't easy but it's real, and it's powerful. Proud of the man he's become. Proud to call him a friend. This one's dropping soon. Don't miss it. See you at work.
Had the honor of sitting down with my friend, Iraq War Veteran and former POW Jessica Lynch, to talk about the importance of National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day. We dove into the history, what this day truly means, and how it's impacted her and other POWs. Perspective like that changes you. We also mixed in some good conversation on turkey and elk hunting because that's how real conversations go. Jessica is a wealth of knowledge, and every time we talk, I walk away better.

Army veteran Angie Peacock survived Iraq in 2003, only to become a prisoner of psychiatric torture. Between VA and civilian psychiatrists, she was prescribed 18 psychiatric drugs at once, then cold-turkeyed off benzodiazepines—leaving her unable to walk for 2.5 years and suicidal for three straight years. After losing 20 years to psychiatric "treatment," Angie escaped and has since helped over 1,000 people navigate psychiatric drug withdrawal. In this explosive conversation, she exposes how both military and civilian psychiatry systematically poison patients, why asking for help destroyed her military career, and delivers a radical truth: the mental health system isn't broken—it's designed to create lifelong patients. For anyone trapped in psychiatric dependency or questioning their "treatment resistant" label, this episode proves you're not crazy. BigTentUSA hosted Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Vet Voice Foundation CEO, Janessa Goldbeck, for a critical virtual conversation on the growing threats to our national security, democratic institutions, and the veteran community. As Trump-aligned forces reshape the federal government—from the State Department and Department of Defense to ICE—veterans are watching their values and service come under attack. The conversation unpacked the political purge at the State Department, the impact of Pete Hegseth's influence at DoD ("Department of War"), and what increased ICE funding signals about our national priorities. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS SENATOR TAMMY DUCKWORTH is an Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs who was among the first handful of Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Duckworth served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2014. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 after representing Illinois's Eighth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms. JANESSA GOLDBECK is the CEO of Vet Voice Foundation, a national nonprofit that mobilizes veterans and military families to shape American democracy and defend democratic values. As a Marine Corps Combat Engineer Officer, Janessa led missions overseas and served as a Uniformed Victim Advocate, supporting fellow service members through some of their toughest moments. While on active duty, in addition to her assigned duties, Janessa worked to reform the military's broken sexual assault reporting process and played a role in overturning the discriminatory Combat Exclusion policy.Watch YouTube Recording HERELearn More: BigTentUSA This is a public episode. Today I'm joined by the incredible Stacy Raske for a deep dive into quite possibly one of my fave topics: mind and business unfuckery. Stacy is a leadership expert and professional speaker, and as an Iraq war veteran, she knows a thing or two about staying sharp under pressure. We cover why you need to manage your energy instead of your time, how to embrace your inner critic, and how to create more leverage in your business. And if you're at the "burn it all down" stage of business, I think you'll get a lot out of this one. Can't-miss moments:Feeling stuck, and like you want to burn it all down? Stacy shares a powerful exercise that can jolt you out of “survival brain” mode (and it's surprisingly easy to do, any time, anywhere)...Zone of genius vs your superpower: if you love doing the work but find yourself low on energy, you might not actually be working in your genius zone. Stacy reveals how to tell the difference (and how to get yourself back on track)..."Fake it until you make it" advice has gone completely off the rails! Stacy and I agree: stop pretending like you've done shit you haven't just to impress potential clients. Here's what to do instead...You know you don't actually HAVE to take Zoom meetings? Here's a shockingly obvious substitute Stacy uses to help keep her energy high... The myth of "I'll do it when..." is keeping you safe AND keeping you stuck. Stacy shares a cautionary tale on what happens when you allow your fears to drive the bus for you... She's a former Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), is a co-Founder of Operation Liberty and has recently served as an Adjunct Professor of the Practice at Duke University. When she was previously Executive Director of IAVA, Jaslow led a national campaign to increase recognition of, and support for, women veterans. The “She Who Borne the Battle” campaign boldly targeted the Department of Veterans Affairs' gender exclusive motto and put the needs of women veterans on the map – and in the headlines. Jaslow also oversaw the organization's successful campaigns to block over $4 billion in cuts to veteran education benefits, and to reverse the Defense Department's efforts to claw back bonuses paid to California National Guardsman. Jaslow was instrumental in orchestrating the first-ever “Commander in Chief Forum” in partnership with NBC, ensuring issues important to the military community remained front and center during the 2016 presidential campaign. The forum drew over 15 million viewers. Professional background: Prior to joining IAVA, Jaslow built a reputation as a leader, trusted advisor and innovative political strategist in Washington and on campaigns across the country. She served as Chief of Staff to Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, after leading Bustos' successful campaign to unseat an incumbent Member of Congress in what has since become a bellwether region for the success of both political parties. Jaslow has twice testified before Congress and made appearances on national news programs including NBC's Today Show, CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show, and the CBS Evening News, where she speaks on issues ranging from national politics to our national security and the military-civilian divide. Trying to be heard above the torrent of propaganda and outright lies - a young active duty airman douses himself in gasoline, and while he burns to death in front the Israeli embassy in Washington DC - shouts "free Palestine" until he is overcome. Aaron Bushnell was committing an act of conscience widely hailed as noble in past conflicts — but he is being smeared by supporters of Israel and American foreign policy. Trish interviews an Iraq War veteran about the importance of respecting this kind of statement from service members. Helping and honoring our military veterans was deeply meaningful to David, and he helped support them with his American Heroes Run. As you may know, I now direct the event to continue his important legacy. Proceeds support Warriors' Ascent, an organization that provides holistic programs to veterans and first responders experiencing post-traumatic stress. Treating veterans with this not-as-visible type of battlefield injury has often gotten overlooked by the Veteran's Administration and organizations that support veterans. I became aware of Iraq War veteran Gene Bennett's story and received a copy of his chilling book, “We Did Not Deserve the Crapper: The prison we entered but never fully left.” Gene served two tours in Iraq. At first, the Army used him as a truck tire mechanic, but as sometimes happens, they assigned him where needed, and with just a smattering of training, he ended up a prison guard. Gene, whose callsign was Spazmasterflex, termed this job “the worst babysitting job ever.” In 130o heat, often walking on metal grating during all-day or all-night shifts, he was tasked with guarding a violent population where Sunnis and Shia often clashed, and often meted out their own versions of justice, which could be death. Of course, they all wanted to kill the Americans. To make it worse, the prison comprised both adult and juvenile sections. At one point, an eight-year-old was detained and a riot broke out until this child was released. On his watch, an Iraqi teen was murdered, something which continues to haunt Gene. He also witnessed several incidents of horrible atrocities and jaw-dropping leadership ineptitude committed by U.S. military officers. His PTSD and depression no doubt were exacerbated by a difficult childhood in a dysfunctional family. Gene has been fighting back by working to get his fellow veterans improved treatment from the VA, as well as write a cookbook to help them take better care of themselves. He is also creating an innovative line of meat smokers. Gene and I had a very engaging conversation that I think will keep you on the edge of your seat. I'd highly recommend you read his book to get a bird's eye look at one veteran's deployment that will leave you shaking your head, but also rooting for this hero to emerge on the other side in a better place.Gene BennettBook on Amazon: "We Did Not Deserve the Crapper: The prison we left but never fully left"Instagram and X @mickeyseversonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Michael Brown joined the Army right out of high school because he knew he wasn't ready for college. After serving 4 years as an infantryman, Michael separated and used his GI Bill to attend Northern Michigan University. Earning a degree in political science and applied ethics, he went on to work for then Congressman-elect, Patrick Murphy, the first Iraq War Veteran ever elected to Congress. Michael served as his Military and Veterans Affairs Director where he supported projects such as the revision and updates of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. He then went on to serve as the Director of Veterans Services for Montgomery County Community College before accepting a role at Villanova University as the first Director of the Office of Veterans and Military Service Members. Since 2018, Michael has been growing the programs, opportunities and community at the university for students and alumni.Choosing to attend college in person, Michael was often the oldest student in his classes. However, he did not allow that to deter him from continuing his degree program. He appreciated learning different perspectives from other students and professors. College helped Michael learn what he liked, didn't like and how he fit into the world. It provided him with a longer landing strip to transition. The Post 9/11 GI Bill offers a maximum benefit of 36 months of education and housing allowance. Michael encourages service members to start taking college courses while they are serving. Not only can they utilize Tuition Assistance without tapping into their GI Bill, but they will also earn credits toward a degree and lessen the amount of benefit they need from their GI Bill once they separate or retire from the military. In Michael's current role, he collaborates with career services and learning support services as well as working with the alumni network and college fundraising arm to ensure student veterans have the resources they need to be successful. Student veterans attend college because they need to upskill or reskill for a meaningful career after military service. By giving student veterans the opportunity to provide feedback about college services, Michael is able to find out what they want and need to be successful in the classroom and in the workforce. Michael focuses on finding quality internship opportunities and creates networking opportunities to help student veterans build a solid network. Over the years, Mike has identified challenges that many student veterans face. First, many college campuses are more aligned with meeting the needs of the traditional 18–22-year-old student. In addition, it can be challenging for a veteran to develop an academic mindset. If you are a current student veteran or a prospective student, reach out to the college and inquire if a veteran office exists on campus. A college education can teach a person about who they are and how they fit into society. Earning a degree involves learning and mastering new skills which should give the student confidence. Interacting with other students and professors will help the student build their professional network. In this episode, I interview Nick Velez. Nick is a first-generation Mexican American who not only broke barriers by becoming the first in his family to join the U.S. Marine Corps but also navigated the challenges of transitioning back to civilian life. The decision to join the military wasn't made on a whim. Inspired by his 6th-grade teacher, an Army Ranger, Nick's initial desire was to join the Army. Then a transformative experience at the Devil Pup Program in Camp Pendleton, he felt an undeniable pull towards the Marine Corps. The tragic events of 9/11 further solidified his resolve. Throughout his high school years, he eagerly participated in preparatory training sessions, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005. Nick served 11 months in Iraq during the surge in 2006. War changed him and he decided to get out in 2009 at the end of his first enlistment. Upon returning from service, Nick faced the universal challenges many veterans encounter when transitioning back to civilian life. However, instead of merely adapting, he took the initiative to start a restaurant Bastards Canteen with his best friend and fellow Marine Calvin Spencer. Nick draws on the discipline required in the military to succeed in the business worlds. His entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there. Recognizing the struggles of his fellow veterans, he founded "Save the Brave", a non-profit organization dedicated to helping and supporting those who served. For first responders, law enforcement, and military veterans, this podcast offers a relatable narrative on service, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams. It underscores the importance of support systems, both in the battlefield and at home, and highlights the potential for reinvention and growth after service.
