About half of U.S. adults will experience a traumatic event in our lifetimes. Although some people will experience PTSD, most who go through a traumatic event will not develop PTSD. On this episode of ADA Live! we discuss how people with disabilities can be affected by traumatic events or experiences, including post-traumatic stress disorder. The symptoms of PTSD vary from person to person and the effects can be delayed. People who have PTSD may meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) definition of a disability by having an impairment or condition that impacts one or more major life activities. Our guest for this episode is Dr. Farris Tuma, a Health Scientist Administrator with the National Institute of Mental Health or NIMH, in Bethesda, Maryland. He is the NIMH point of contact for research on violence and trauma. His formal training is in public health as a research scientist, and he holds a master's degree in health policy and management. Today we're going to talk about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This can be a delicate topic but, unfortunately, children are not exempt from it and so I think it's important to spend some time talking about it. In this episode I'll share some background to PTSD – what it is and how it can be triggered – as well as signs of PTSD to look for in both school-aged children and in younger children, how PTSD affects a person's brain, and then what it is that we can do at Connect My Brain to help children who are struggling with PTSD. PTSD was originally associated with something that happened to people who went into war, but now we know that many individuals can experience PTSD, for a variety of reasons. I often hear people say that children are so resilient, but I really don't believe that is an appropriate way to think about childhood. Some of our children are exposed to more trauma and violence than we realize and PTSD from these events can last months, years, or even for a person's entire life. This can be an extremely difficult path to break out of, but it is possible with the appropriate supports. PTSD symptoms in young children can be quite subtle and look much different than the symptoms that an older child or adult might experience, but if these symptoms are not recognized and addressed, these traumatic events can have a critical impact on a child's life and development. It was this very sentence that was shared with me on the first ever breathwork circle I was a part of and it was this journey that forever changed the course of my life. And with these words I'd like to welcome our next guest on the Podast: Edward Dangerfield Edward is a nervous system specialist, teacher and the visionary founder of the Facilitated Breath Repatterning Technique (FBR) and Breathwork Bali. Edward's journey of transformation began after surviving a near-death experience, where he found himself caught in an avalanche. This event left him grappling with the aftermath of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) bringing him down a journey of seeking the tools and practices that can help him heal and regulate his nervous system. But during his time in the fire service, he experienced it for the first time - and it nearly broke him.  Like many who work in emotionally difficult careers, David saw horrific things during his time in the fire department. He struggled with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and even considered taking his own life. If you can, find your purpose helping others succeed by doing the things you're gifted at.” “The fire service is lagging behind even every male-dominated industry in the United States. Paid firefighters - in 2010, the workforce was 3.7% female, and other occupations that were similar had 17% females or higher. Ten years later in the 2020 census, they achieved success in bringing it up to 4.7%. The work needs to be done on the culture so that it's more inclusive.” “While the fire service is hiring more women,  they're not retaining them. Most women may do 6-10 years but ultimately they'll leave for a career where their skills and experience are valued to a higher degree. A veteran of the Iraq War and with 28 years of uniformed service, Dr. Vincent Arnold has supported and served nearly all the branches of the US military, including the Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corp., and the Navy before retiring with the rank of Chaplain in 2007. Upon his retirement from active military service, Dr. Arnold served as the first civilian Clinical Director and Department Head for the Deployment Health Center (DHC), becoming one of the largest in the Navy to include a comprehensive Post Deployment Health Reassessment screening program, creation of a PTSD multidisciplinary treatment team, and establishment of the Autonomic Neuropsychological Assessment Metric Program. He subsequently served as a Pastoral Counselor at Naval Medical Center, Camp Lejeune, where he worked directly with wounded warriors in the areas of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)and mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). Specializing in holistic-oriented mindfulness-based pastoral counseling, Dr. Arnold offered individual, couple, and group sessions in Integrative Restoration Yoga Nidra (iRest) and Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR). He continues to offer non-fee-based pastoral counseling and workshops and retreats on ‘I Rest in Him.' In addition to his service as a board director with Warriors at Ease, Dr. Arnold is an ERYT 200 yoga instructor and Certified iRest®Yoga Nidra Teacher. Dr. Arnold received a BA in Religion from Emmanuel College, an MDiv from Duke University, a Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Renewal from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University.

Jillian Brown is a Canadian-born adventure photographer. Diagnosed with PTSD, she has used this to fuel her drive to connect others to nature, adventure and themselves. She is particularly known for her niche of taking cameras to the extremes of paddling and remote expeditions accompanied by stories of her personal journeys along the way.  Within her documents, she has been able to achieve a World first, of paddling a Tandem sea kayak down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and becoming the first Canadian to paddle across America. Pushing herself both physically and mentally, she knows no boundaries with her goal to connect others to the natural world, to live a life of passion and showcase deep, and influential storytelling within her photography and writing.  In this podcast, Jillian starts off by sharing what inspired her to become an adventure photographer. Jillian also shares when she decided to combine her passion for adventure with her love of photography. She then talks about her big “Canoeing Journey” experience, sharing all of the highs and lows of the trip. When Jillian was thinking about throwing in the towel on this trip, she encountered a squirrel that taught her the meaning of life. Jillian opens up about a toxic relationship with a previous partner from an earlier time in her life. After five challenging years, she had the courage to leave this relationship. She shares her “hockey puck” story of two people who supported her during this really hard time in her life. Brenda Warren, The Soulutionist also known as Voice for the Voiceless, is a retired United States Marine, Author, Host of the show Talk To Me, a Podcaster, and Mental Fitness Coach. Follow us on facebook, twitter and Instagram @isthatlikeathing or reach us at 469-854-9636NOTES FROM JAMIE: The most basic job of anxiety goes back to the fight or flight we needed physically for survival. In caveman days after those fight or flight moments, you go back to the cave and have several hours to calm down, to allow our bodies to normalize and process our thoughts, feelings and emotions.We often live in fight or flight (even if it's prolonged stress) and we get used to feeling those heightened emotions without ever restabilizing.Sometimes we need to be able to “Go back to the cave” and take time to process the things that are happening in our lives.Negative thoughts actually create grooves in our brain that become like ruts where our thoughts naturally go without even trying to think that way.We can change these physical ruts by inputting new language and practicing it like a spelling test. We can intentionally think new thoughts over and over and over again to create new pathways of thought.FAVORITE QUOTES: “When we relate it back to our faith, we were given anxiety for a reason. We were given feelings of depression for a reason.” - Jamie “When you have negative thought patterns, you create a groove in your brain for those negative thought patterns to travel.
