One of Trump's first measures after taking office was to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement (also called the Paris Accords or Paris Climate Accords) is an international treaty on climate change that requires it's signatories to set their own emissions reductions goals and to report regularly on their progress.  Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement makes the United States one of only four countries in the entire world who are not signatories to the Paris Agreement, with the other three non-signatories being Iran, Libya and Yemen. Oto spoke to Amanda Larsson from Greenpeace Aotearoa to discuss the implications of Trump's exit from the Paris agreement, and how Aotearoa should adjust its own climate targets in response.

Labour’s promise for 100% renewable by 2030: smart or cynical?

Last week, the Labour Party unveiled an election promise to bring forward by five years the goal of 100 percent renewable electricity generation to 2030. It means NZ would join nations such as Iceland and Norway in leading the world in renewables and reinforce Jacinda Adern’s commitment to addressing climate change. It is after all, her generation’s nuclear free moment. But not everyone is impressed. Greenpeace has called policy ‘stingy’ and climate change journalist Marc Daalder describes it as a ‘red herring’. So is going 100% renewable by 2030 a bold plan for emissions reduction, or it is an expensive distraction while the rest of the country burns.I was joined by Newsroom journalist Marc Daalder and by Greenpeace energy spokesperson Amanda Larsson to discuss the policy.Read Marc’s excellent article about the policy hereRead Greenpeace’s statement about the policy hereRead the Labour Party policy statement here

Labour's renewable energy policy is failing to impress Greenpeace, who say the party's lost it's sizzle when it comes to environmental issues. Labour's announced a target of 100 percent renewable energy by 2030, which would need a pumped hydro plant in the South Island, at a cost of four billion dollars.Greenpeace campaigner Amanda Larsson told Kate Hawkesby at the start of their term - Labour made bold moves in banning new oil and gas exploration offshore. She says they want to see bolder policies that can be achieved in the short term, such as helping more people get electric vehicles and solar panels for their homes."The policy has some nice headlines,  but doesn't seem to be hitting the core of the issue."We should be focussing on transitioning transport and manufacturing away from dirty fuels such as coal, gas and oil."LISTEN ABOVE

With finance minister Grant Robertson announcing billions of dollars to combat the effects of Covid-19 and the subsequent recession, some have seen this as an opportunity to change the way live, work and interact with our planet. Bronwyn spoke to Amanda Larsson from Greenpeace about their proposed Green Covid Response, which urges the government to invest this money into clean transformative industries and uplifting marginalised communities. No doubt you have seen the stories about the positive impacts on the climate as a result of a world under rāhui. Whether it be pollution levels in New York reduced by nearly 50%, or a 40% drop in coal use by China's six largest power plants, the global pandemic has curbed carbon emissions in ways that climate activists have been trying unsuccessfully to do for decades. However in the long term, the International Energy Agency warns that Covid-19 could cause a slowdown in world’s clean energy transition. Bronwyn began by asking Amanda how we can ensure pollution levels don't just bounce back once the pandemic is over. There is currently an online petition calling for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to adopt the Green Covid Response, with a goal of 10,000 signatures.
