Mike's Minute: Labour are the ones with a Greens issue

As exercised as some have been this week about social media, the Greens and their behaviour, the bigger issue is not the Greens, but Labour and all who might support them into Government. As much as we may froth and hyperventilate about any given issue of the day or small firestorm, who runs the country and how is what we all ultimately should be focused on. We will not be going back to a single large party ever again, for two reasons. One is because Covid is not repeating and, even if it did, I doubt we would panic again electorally the way we did. Two is given when Labour was left to their own devices, they literally destroyed the place, most of us, for good or bad, have come to the conclusion that a mix of parties under this MMP system we seem to have voted for an accepted is here to stay. So National need at least one player, probably two, and the same applies to Labour. For now, National seem to have got lucky and/or well organised. Whether you support it or not, broadly speaking National, Act, and NZ First get along fine. The media try to stir bits of trouble around minor matters periodically and we are yet to see a full-blown campaign post a first term, where the gloves are off a bit and a few punches might get thrown. But overall, things are cordial and well managed. Labour on the other hand need certainly the Greens and possibly the Māori Party. Both are increasingly ropey. Both are increasingly belligerent, both are increasingly fringe and both are an electoral nightmare for a so-called mainstream, left-wing party. The Greens of James Shaw, Rod Donald, and Jeanette Fitzsimons are long gone. The Māori Party of Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia are long gone Both the current Greens and the Māori Party are anti-establishment disruptors who revel in a type of anarchy, almost as though they are outside the system. All of that is fine if you like that and want to vote for it. But it is completely incompatible to running a country, even for a Labour Party that has become increasingly left-leaning and socialist. If you don't need, or want, to be in power, and I don't think half the Greens or the Māori Party actually do, you can say what you want. But Labour do want power, and their problem is they are going to end up having to answer for an increasingly unhinged rabble or at least try to dress it up as something they can handle. That's their problem. I don't think they have the wherewithal to even come close to pulling that trick off. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We are thrilled to bring you the top entries from the 2024 SEG Student Chapter Podcast Challenge as a special set of three episodes.  This second episode in the mini-series pairs the 2024 Silver the intriguing stories and history shared by an esteemed geologist in Brazil, with a second segment that uncovered the history and mining potential of northern England. Chapter 1:  Title: The Evolution of Geology in Brazil with Reinhardt FückSEG STUDENT CHAPTER – University of BrasiliaHosts:  Amanda Rompava and Gustavo D'Amore HeerProducers:  Juliana Berbert and MarianaGuest:  Professor Reinhardt Adolfo FückThe theme of this episode tells the story behind the articles and mapping work of one of Brazil's greatest geological characters, with special emphasis on the magmatic arc of Goiás in the Brasília belt, where important deposits reside, as well as his significant work on crustal structure, the Tocantins Province, and Goiás Massif. With a cautious eye and carrying the experience of working with geology since the 1960s, Professor Reinhardt shares with us the unwritten history behind published articles, his perspecitve on the evolution of knowledge in the field and also the importance of mapping for a geology career.Chapter 2:  ‘The Critical Mineral Potential of the North of England'SEG STUDENT CHAPTER NAME:  University of LeedsHosts, Lily Dickson and Brayden Pickard Guests:  Dr. James Shaw  (structural geologist) and Adam Eskdale (Rio Tinto)provides an overview of mineral exploration and extraction in our region of the UK, the North of England (Figure 1) and its critical mineral potential.  In February 2024, our student chapter hosted a mini-conference on the subject of critical minerals (Figure 2) with talks from companies including British Lithium, the Critical Minerals Association (UK) and Green Lithium. We were inspired to carry out further research into the critical mineral potential of the region we live in, the North of England, which we present in this podcast. At present, the UK does not extract any of the 18 critical minerals on the 2021 list published by the British Geological Survey (BGS). This renders the UK completely reliant on international supply which is a big problem, and one that we must try to address through increased mineral exploration and mining in the near future. In order to provide a full picture of the critical mineral potential of our region, we explore the rich mining history of the North of England, dating back to the Bronze Age at sites such as Alderly Edge (Figure 3). We also investigate current critical mineral projects: Li exploration around the Weardale Granite and Potash mining near the town of Whitby. Finally, we speak to Dr James Shaw and Dr Adam Eskdale who have worked on fluorspar mineralisation in the South Pennine Orefield and cobalt mineralisation in the Lake District, respectively. They provide insights into these deposits and to potential barriers to their extraction in the future. A big thank you goes to Dr James Shaw and Adam Eskdale for sharing their expertise with our student chapter!

Christopher Luxon says he wants nothing to do with the Greens while he's Prime Minister. Luxon's confirmed a National-Greens Coalition wasn't off the cards when James Shaw was co-leader of the Green Party. But he says the party has changed significantly under new leadership. The Prime Minister told Kerre Woodham he had great respect for Shaw and his commitment to the environment, and would have been prepared to work with him. But he says the Greens have since moved to what he calls a more "socialist" position. Luxon says the Government has not handled changes to Oranga Tamariki contracts well. A children's charity is suing the Ministry for allegedly cancelling a $21 million contract which still has two-and-a-half years to run. Stand Tū Māia says losing funding will end the service, which has a 100 year history of providing trauma care for children and whanau. Luxon told Woodham the organisation has done some great work. He says the matter is before the court so he can't comment much, but he has raised the issue with the Children's Minister this week. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Green Party reached a significant milestone this weekend, off the back of a tough year for the party. It's been a year full of controversy following the arrest of Golriz Ghahraman, the referral of Julie Anne Genter to the Privileges Committee and the Darleen Tana saga that ended with the Greens using the Waka-Jumping law to oust her. The Party's also had to deal with leadership changes following James Shaw's retirement - but the sudden death of Efeso Collins and co-leader Marama Davidson stepping aside following a breast cancer diagnosis have also impacted the Greens. NZ Herald political reporter Adam Pearse says co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick is determined to move forward - as the party has big plans for 2025. It's not over yet, but just maybe there is light at the end of the Darleen Tana drama tunnel. Please let it be. The Green Party has their own uniquely democratic and patient way of reaching a decision, but seven months and running to get this sorted is surely testing even their limits. It was good this week to see a consensus of delegates agree to using the waka-jumping law - or the electoral integrity clause in the Electoral Act - to eject Tana. The co-leaders have now written to Speaker Gerry Brownlee, asking him to trigger the law and eject her from Parliament. This issue has been a huge drag for the party, and good on them for their change of heart. They would obviously prefer not to be in this position, but they recognise this is the quickest way of getting to what they believe is the right outcome - the removal of Tana from Parliament. It's been a year of dealing with HR setbacks and issues for the Greens - the resignation of Golriz Ghahraman at the beginning of the year, followed by the election for a new co-leader after James Shaw's resignation, and multiple complaints about Julie Anne Genter's behaviour. But the most damaging and long running distraction has been the removal of a list MP they found to be completely at odds with the parties values, policies or Kaupapa. For a very principled party, it's not a good look to reverse their opposition to the party jumping law since the first version was passed in 2001. But the Greens aren't the first, and won't be the last party, to about-face on a law or policy. Flexibility about principles is not something that comes as naturally to the Greens as other political parties, but it has always been part of politics. And let's be honest, an independent report didn't work. Letters and public appeals from the Greens' leaders didn't work. Talking about how Tana had distorted the proportionality of the house didn't work. Public opinion hasn't worked. If it wasn't so self-serving, you'd admire Tana's tenacity in refusing to go. So the Greens have been left with little choice but to embraced the ugly old party-hopping law. Of course it's not over yet. There is still an appeal to sort out, and then it's up to the Speaker. Even though this crazy year hasn't significantly impacted the Greens in the polls, they will be keen to put this behind them. They can then get on with Swarbrick's plan to evolve the Greens into a party that can lead the government in the not so distant future. And no doubt this cautionary tale will have all political parties quietly mulling over how to make sure their processes for selecting list candidates are as robust as they can be. So, bye bye James Shaw; Valedictory Day today.  He is in the interesting position of having left behind something potentially quite substantive.  The Net Zero laws, we will be neutral by 2050. But then that's the problem isn't it? My bet is we wont.  So, what's your legacy when the big bit you left behind turns into dust?  Could be wrong of course, but as 2050 gets ever closer, the goal doesn't. In fact, we are moving in completely the wrong direction.  It's an idea and a series of polices that have been driven by good intentions but overtaken in ensuing years by cold hard reality.  He will mention it, I am sure, in his Valedictory today in the Parliament.  He will speak proudly of it, as well he might because the bit he leaves behind is the reputation that he was actually a Green MP in the true sense of the word as opposed to being like too many of the others; loud mouth protestors and reactionaries to the buzz cause of the day.  He also has the advantage of being a nice guy. You don't have to agree with him to get on with him.  But in totality you can't help but conclude he got hijacked by causes beyond his control.  The way they handled his co-leadership was shocking for a bloke who provided so much ballast to the party. They rewarded him with yet another of their wackjob hatchet attempts which culminated, if you remember, in him standing for the job unopposed because the idiots who drove it lacked any sort of planning or spine.  He also spent a lot of time explaining, or apologising, or defending the various versions of madness that passed for Green Party behaviour.  Turei to Golriz to Tana, a report we are still standing by for by the way, how many times was it suggested he was in the wrong party? But then as easy as that is to say, what would his party have been?  He is a good old fashioned environmentalist who came from the corporate world to try and make a bit of decent change and rarely lost his good sense and fine humour in doing so.  The Parliament has too much rabble these days, so his departure sadly tips the balance even further. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When it comes to climate investing: where are we? Where do we need to be? How will we get there?  We ask former Climate Change Minister and co-leader of the Green Party, James Shaw, before he leaves Parliament on May 1. Shaw explains that while much of his job was telling the truth about a bleak subject, he's buoyed by the ‘astonishing' amount of money that's going into so-called green finance globally. And he  believes the transition from fossil fuels is the greatest investment opportunity of a lifetime. You'll learn why climate reporting by listed companies is a gamechanger, the likely fate of forestry, why the carbon markets are failing, and what's misunderstood about methane. A group of sixteen advocacy groups have penned an open letter to the Government, calling for a right to a sustainable environment. This comes as a member's bill by James Shaw, which proposes to introduce the right to the Bill of Rights Act, is set to be introduced to Parliament on Wednesday. Inclusion in the Bill of Rights Act would mean all other legislation would be presumed to be consistent with a sustainable environment unless it clearly states otherwise. Lawyers for Climate Action executive director Jessica Palairet spoke to Corin Dann.

The carbon market is worth following, if for no other reason than it's a very good example of voodoo economics - and it's highly entertaining.  We talked yesterday to Steven Joyce about James Shaw's desire to have our liability on carbon emissions put into the books so we can all see what sort of effect it would have on our finances.  The key lines in Joyce's explanation were that we can't do that because we don't actually know what the figure is, remembering of course we promised to reduce emissions in the Paris Accord by a certain amount in a certain timeframe.  He also quite rightly pointed out that there is no one to pay it to, and the reason there is no one to pay it to is because the whole thing is invented. Which brings us back to the Climate Change Commission, who have put out their latest advice. And their latest advice advises the Government that they have their settings all wrong.  The previous Government had their settings all wrong as well, given the carbon auctions last year were a complete and utter bust. The carbon auctions happen four times a year but it's another invention - if you're a polluter you buy credits to offset your emissions.  The trouble was at each and every one of the auctions last year no one bought anything. Not one carbon credit. Nothing.  As each auction came and went the unsold credits got added to the next auction, so work out the ol' supply and demand equation and guess what happened? That's right - nothing.  Four auctions and not a single sale. The Government could have got $2billion-ish but they got nothing.  The commission says we need to do something about it because there are too many credits, there is too much uncertainty and we run the risk of not meeting our obligations.  Small question - what exactly happens if we don't meet our obligations? The answer, my bet, is nothing.  Very few, if anyone, is meeting their obligations. China certainly isn't, or America, or India, the world's actual polluters.  We have got ourselves caught up in a faux fight, with a market we invented, in a non-enforceable deal. All propped up by the idea that you should hand over money to an imaginary group, or organisation, or people if you burn coal.  Could it be the fact no credits were sold at our auctions last year and the commissions concerns over settings is largely because this is a scam? And when push comes to shove people don't mind espousing hot air about it, we love a bit of greenwashing.  It's just we are not so keen on handing over actual money. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
