Hàng triệu người đi vệ sinh ngoài trời: Bài toán nan giải của Ấn Độ

TẠP CHÍ XÃ HỘI

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 22, 2025 8:38

Chiến dịch Swachh Bharat do Thủ tướng Narendra Modi phát động năm 2014 đặt mục tiêu chấm dứt tình trạng đại tiện ngoài trời tại Ấn Độ.

Yet Americans buy 50 billion single-use plastic water bottles annually—enough to circle the Earth 200 times if laid end to end. The bottles take 450 years to decompose, and recent research found that a single liter of bottled water can shed up to 240,000 pieces of microplastic that we ultimately consume. Meanwhile, 37% of global drinking water remains contaminated, with PFAS "forever chemicals" and lead appearing even in neighboring homes on the same street. Meet Scott Clawson, Chairman and CEO of Culligan International, the nearly 90-year-old company that's become the global leader in water services by making filtered water more accessible than single-use plastic. Under Clawson's leadership, Culligan serves 170 million people worldwide, and the company's filtration systems have helped avoid the use of 45 billion plastic bottles annually. The company has set ambitious targets: achieving net positive water impact by 2050 and cutting scope one and two emissions intensity by 40% before 2035. After completing WAVE water stewardship verification, Culligan discovered that even testing filtration equipment was wasteful, leading the company to develop dry-testing methods that eliminate water waste before machines reach consumers. The company has electrified 25% of its fleet and donated 9 million liters of water to communities in need in 2024 alone. Clawson's approach to sustainability isn't just operational—it's personal.A decade ago, while vacationing in the Bahamas, he encountered a beach covered in plastic waste. "That's when my inner balance was sparked to make sure we do more than just use our planet to make money, but let's use our planet to help it be a better place to live," he recalls. As water scarcity intensifies globally, Clawson believes the consumer holds the power: "Every time you pick something up off the shelf, you are voting. You're sending a signal to a company." His message is clear—test your water, understand what's in it, and invest in point-of-use filtration rather than contributing to the plastic crisis. You can learn more about Culligan International at culliganinternational.com.Subscribe to Sustainability In Your Ear on iTunescFollow Sustainability In Your Ear on Spreaker, iHeartRadio, or YouTube

Welcome back to The Round Table! This week, our hosts Kassandra and Preena are joined by Shennell McCloud, a visionary leader redefining civic engagement. Together, they dive into a conversation that bridges two worlds we rarely talk about together: wellness and infrastructure and how their intersection is essential to building lasting justice. Too often, civic leadership is measured by rallies, votes, and policy wins. But what about the systems that support the people doing the work? What if true, sustainable change means protecting not just rights, but rest? Not just momentum, but mental health? In this episode, we explore why burnout and overwork are not sustainable models for engagement and how movements can thrive when wellness is treated as a core part of organizing. We also examine how neglecting mental health and community care weakens civic infrastructure. From physical spaces to digital platforms like The Sanctuary, we spotlight ways to intentionally build systems of care that fuel resilience and action.Shennell's work offers powerful insight into what it means to build structures that support both freedom and function, especially in communities that have been over extracted and under-resourced for generations. Together, this conversation reminds us that justice work isn't just about fighting back, it's also about building up, and that starts with caring for ourselves and each other. Thanks For Listening!

Illinois has been a leader in the data center boom, with more than 220 across the state. However, those centers use up tons of water, often from the same sources that local communities rely on for drinking water. Advocates that work to protect the Great Lakes (and local drinking water) are raising the alarm on the burden this could put on Illinois municipalities in the short and long term. Reset gets the details from Jen Walling, executive director, Illinois Environmental Council; and Joel Brammeier, president, Alliance for the Great Lakes. In this episode, I'm breaking down the exact hydration and fueling strategies that will help you avoid cramping, gut issues, and those dreaded mid-race bathroom emergencies. You'll learn why drinking more water can actually hurt your performance, when energy gels are worth the money (and when they're not), and my proven race-day timing system that eliminates porta potty anxiety forever. Several communities in Oregon have bought portions of their surrounding forests to more directly manage their natural resources. The “community forest” model has been used to manage for wildfire risk, drinking water quality, recreation and more. The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board recently awarded grants to six cities to protect forests around their drinking water sources. The funding allows them to purchase land, arrange for conservation easements and pay back debt on property they’ve already acquired within their watershed.   We’ll hear more from Ann Vileisis, mayor of Port Orford, which received one of the grants. We’ll also learn about community forests more broadly from Dylan Kruse, president of the conservation nonprofit Sustainable Northwest.
