In this special episode to celebrate the 2025 Merrie Monarch Festival, we sit down with Kumu Hula, Karl Veto Baker, of Halau I Ka Wekiu for a heartfelt conversation that weaves together the art of hula and the spirit of aloha. Kumu Veto shares how his haumana prepare for Merrie Monarch and what it means to watch his dancers rise to the moment. He describes the 50th teaching anniversary of his mentor, Kumu Hula Robert Cazimero, and reflects upon the Hawaiian Renaissance that shaped a generation of cultural practitioners. In the spirit of aloha, Kumu Veto also describes his friendship with Pono Shim and how Pono became the Kahu of Halau I Ka Wekiu. As a businessman himself, we also dive into the intersection of culture and business as well as his hopes for a thriving Hawaii in which kamaaina have the opportunity to come home and give back to their communities. And of course, this episode would be remiss if we didnʻt get an exciting glimpse into the Halau's 2025 Merrie Monarch performances. Join us for a celebration of hula as a way of life. Join us on our journey to uncover what it means to think, act, and live aloha. The inspiration for this podcast is the late Pono Shim, former President and CEO of the Oʻahu Economic Development Board. His stories capture the essence of what it means to live aloha. He made it known that aloha is a lifestyle. It is not a solution to problems, a marketing brand or to be used as an advantage over anyone else. Aloha is to be honored and practiced. The name of this podcast is in reverence of Hawaiʻi's Queen Liliʻuokalani, who wrote: "To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable – that is Aloha. All things in this world are two; in heaven there is but One.” Through these episodes, we seek to find that singular perspective, the one that is "above the sides" as we strive for universal peace. We welcome you to pause with us as we share the stories and voices of Hawai'i business leaders, educators and community members who have chosen to be lifelong students of aloha. Mahalo nui loa for listening.

When Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke (Waikato, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou, Te Āti Awa, and Ngāi Tahu) performed a haka on the floor of New Zealand's Parliament, she brought global awareness of the constant colonial pressure to dismantle established rights for Indigenous people. In the viral video, she dramatically tears apart a proposed bill that would weaken Māori political standing established in a nearly 200 year-old treaty between the Crown and 500 Māori chiefs. She was suspended ... for a bill that may never become law. The fight in New Zealand exemplifies a resurgence in efforts to backtrack on the gains in recognition and respect for established Indigenous rights. Plus, we'll get Indigenous perspectives on the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 in Azerbaijan that just wrapped up. There is growing concern and dissatisfaction that the concerns of Indigenous people about their vulnerabilities to the effects of climate change are going unheard. In this episode of The Light Inside, we extol the profound significance of the word 'kahu' within Hawaiian culture and its relevance to our modern lives. Kahu, a term that transcends its literal meaning, represents the roles of guardian, caretaker, and honored attendant, embodying a sacred duty to honor and nurture all that exists. As your host, Jeffrey Besecker, I invite you to consider the concept of being a Kahu in your own life. Imagine being entrusted with the care of something cherished, guiding and supporting others through life's challenges, and recognizing our interconnectedness within the fabric of humanity. Some Ngāti Kahu iwi members in the Far North are threatening to block boat ramps in protest at the annual Doubtless Bay fishing contest this weekend. A post to social media says fish numbers have decreased dramatically due to over-fishing in the area. But other iwi leaders have responded saying discussions on the matter have not yet taken place. Competition organiser Nick Ryan says the event is a community fundraiser and will still go ahead. "They have no right to block boat ramps, they have no powers to do so, it would appear that people might be speaking just above their positions. But it's not to say that they cannot protest." Broderick, an artist, curator, and educator from Mōkapu, Oʻahu, champions the text, saying “Kānaka ‘Ōiwi don't have a lot of writing about our recent stories of art, so the few texts that do exist become more significant with time because they function as rare points of reference that we can all share when we're reconstructing our own histories.” Broderick discusses challenges faced by Native Hawaiians around stories of their art within institutional settings and the role of writing in his own practice: “I'm an artist, but I have to write now because the work that I make, no matter how understood it is by the communities that I'm a part of, if it's not written about it doesn't really exist for a certain audience … Writing for me is a way to no longer have to waste time explaining what I already know.”On the occasion of this episode and especially following the fires in Hawaiʻi, we encourage listeners to visit the Puʻuhonua Society and consider making a donation. This episode has been generously supported by the Mellon Foundation.
