Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded March 29th and April 2nd, 2023. And welcome to the Spring of discontent! While leaders In the capitals of Europe and America promise to carry on the Ukraine proxy war no matter the price, the People are already in the streets protesting the real and rising costs of that belligerence. For Canadians, whose government is already full-throatedly behind: the bellicose stance against Russia, prospects of an expanded war against China and Iran, battles by sanction in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and elsewhere, there is too Haiti. Last week, the Trudeau Liberals blithely announced another $100 million dollars to be delivered to the tiny island nation's military and police effort to keep the restive population under heel. This on top of millions already delivered. It's almost as if Ottawa believes the fatted tax goose's golden eggs will never flag. Yves Engler is an independent, Montreal-based journalist and author. He's written twelve books on Canadian foreign policy, including ‘Canada in Haiti: Waging War on the Poor Majority', co-authored with Anthony Fenton. His recent article, 'Canadian government prioritizes war over climate crisis' is a troubling portrait of a country few here in our home and native land would recognize. Yves Engler and Trudeau of the Tropics, taking Haiti. Song: The Panic Is On Artist: David Rovics Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, broad/webcasting since 1999. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded February 11th, 2023. This past week, Canadian Forces redeployed a CP-140 Aurora surveillance plane from its dedicated mission assisting U.S.-led drugs smuggling interdiction efforts in the Caribbean to spend two days flying reconnaissance over Haiti. Foreign Affairs Minister, Melanie Joly characterized the escalation of Canada's military involvement in the country as a "demonstration of Canada's commitment to Haiti". Last month, Canada demonstrated that commitment in the form of an unspecified number and type of armored vehicles being sold to a government that has already called for foreign military intervention to quell wide-spread public discontent with its corrupt and entirely unelected leadership. Yves Engler is an independent, Montreal-based journalist and author. He's written twelve books on Canadian foreign policy, including ‘Canada in Haiti: Waging War on the Poor Majority', co-authored with Anthony Fenton. His recent article, ‘Ottawa's support for repressive Haitian police grows as democracy fades' appears at his website, YvesEngler.com, and puts to the lie - again - Canada's "concern for the people" of that benighted island. Yves Engler in the first half. And; the University of Victoria's Student Union has become another front in the Ukraine/Russia war. Last month, UVic's Ukrainiain Students' Society alleged harassment of its members and intimidation in the form of "hate crime" graffiti scrawled on one of its posters. They've also made allegations of "ongoing hate and harassment demonstrated by the YCL [Young Communist League]..." UVic's USS is, with similar student societies on campuses across the country, associated with the politically influential Ukrainian Canadian Congress. Tyan Cherepuschak is an undergraduate student at the University of Victoria, and is a Ukrainian-Canadian who until recently served as Vice-President to the UVic chapter of the Ukrainian Canadian Students Union (SUSK). And; Tyson Strandlund is a member of both the UVic chapter of the Young Communist League and the Vancouver Island Peace Council, a local chapter of the Canadian Peace Congress. He too is a Canadian of Ukrainian descent, who has studied in and visited Ukraine both before and after the 2014 Maidan coup. Tyan Cherepuschak & Tyson Strandlund on bringing the Ukraine conflict to Canadian campuses in the second half. But first, Yves Engler and Canada's caring military gestures to Haiti. It is the first time that the Terradyne APCs have been seen in one of the operations by Saudi security forces since the news of their export to Saudi Arabia became public knowledge about two years ago, said Anthony Fenton, an author, a PhD candidate at York University who studies Canada’s foreign policy, and a vocal critic of Ottawa’s relations with the monarchies of the Arabian Peninsula.
May is a time for commemorations that begins with: the May Day(s), the ancient pagan ritual for Spring, and marking of Labour solidarity in Europe and America; and of course, tomorrow's Cinco de Mayo remembrance of one of Mexico's successful revolutions. But for the residents of Odessa, Ukraine's third city and most important seaport, May the 2nd is no celebration. It's a date that will live forever in infamy. Two years ago, during the Western-inspired Maidan uprising, scores of citizen resistors to the Kiev coup were killed, burned alive by the fascist mob as they took shelter in the House of Trade Unions building in Kulikovo Square. Hundreds more were injured. Listen. Hear. The regime is yet to bring the investigation into the atrocity forward; in fact, after two years, the only ones in prison for what happened on May second are survivors of the attacks. That failure is emblematic of the hopelessly corrupt and unjust rule of Washington's puppet, Petro Poroshenko; two years into Kiev's war-torn rule of Ukraine the country teeters tenuously on the brink of total disaster. Roger Annis is a longtime socialist, trade union activist, and prolific essayist in the cause of social justice and peace both in Canada and abroad. He's a contributing editor at the website New Cold War, where he's written extensively on Ukraine, and his articles can also be found at his website, A Socialist in Canada, and at Rabble.ca, and Counterpunch.org. Roger Annis in the first segment. And; not to be left behind, Canada too has been busy enabling corrupt and violent regimes murder and maim innocents. As the body count of the House of Saud's relentless onslaught in neigbouring Yemen continues to increase, Ottawa is beavering away to sign as many "defense" contracts as it can muster; possibly before the dammed outrage in the region, and indeed the World, breaks, washing finally away the Saudi's forever. Anthony Fenton is an independent researcher, former journalist, author, and PhD candidate studying the political economy of Canada-Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC relations. Anthony co-authored, with Yves Engler, 'Canada in Haiti: Waging War on the Poor Majority,' and his many articles have been featured by the Asia Times Online, The Dominion, Foreign Policy in Focus, Inter Press Service News, Mother Jones, and Upside Down World. Anthony Fenton and Ottawa arming its friends in the Saudi war zone in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher emeritus and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will NOT join us as is usual today; prior commitments demanding her more immediate attention. So, first up, Roger Annis and Kiev's victory two years later. Gorilla Radio :: News, Public Affairs File Download (57:49 min / 53 MB)
Canada's arms deal with Saudi Arabia has raised a lot of controversy, but they're not the only ones getting our weapons or weapons parts. Supriya wants to know who else Canada is selling arms to, what oversight exists to make sure our weapons aren't being used unethically and what happens if we do see a reason to break an arms contract. She talks to NDP defence critic Hélène Laverdière, who wants to create a Parliamentary sub-committee to oversee arms sales. She also talks to Anthony Fenton, a PhD candidate at York University who studies political economy of Canada and the Middle-East. The book by Yves Engler, Canada in Africa — 300 Years of Aid and Exploitation describing Canadian foreign policy in Africa will be analyzed in this presentation as well as the Canadian involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, “scramble for Africa”, missionary movement and European colonialism. The book also reveals Ottawa's opposition to anticolonial struggles, support for apartheid South Africa, Idi Amin's coup in Uganda and this country's role in ousting independence leaders Patrice Lumumba of Congo and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana. Based on an exhaustive look at the public record as well as on-the-ground research, Canada in Africa shows how the federal government pressed African countries to follow neoliberal economic prescriptions, which have benefited numerous Canadian corporations, including mining companies that have bought up much of the continent's mineral resources, but are often bitterly resisted by local communities. The book also sheds light on Canada's role in the violence that has engulfed Somalia, Rwanda and the Congo and Canada's creeping military footprint on the continent. Finally, it points out that this country's near total indifference to the impact of global warming is tantamount to a death sentence for ever-growing numbers of Africans. Speaker: Yves Engler Former Vice President of the Concordia Student Union, Yves Engler is a Montréal-based activist and author. He has published eight books: Canada in Africa: 300 Years of Aid and Exploitation, The Ugly Canadian: Stephen Harper's Foreign Policy, Lester Pearson's Peacekeeping: The Truth May Hurt, Stop Signs: Cars and Capitalism on the Road to Economic, Social and Ecological Decay (with Bianca Mugyenyi), The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy (Shortlisted for the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non Fiction in the Quebec Writers' Federation Literary Awards), Playing Left Wing: From Rink Rat to Student Radical and Canada in Haiti: Waging War on The Poor Majority (with Anthony Fenton) and Canada and Israel: Building Apartheid.
