Americans voted for lower inflation and a peace president, yet just months into Trump 2.0 we are seeing a tariff plan that is rocking world markets and an expanding - but losing - war on Yemen with the Administration about an inch away from starting yet another war, this time with Iran. What happened?
In this episode of The PDB Afternoon Bulletin: New details emerge about how Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg ended up in a Signal group chat where Trump officials discussed military strikes in Yemen—tracing back to a simple contact mix-up and a campaign-era email. Several powerful Iranian-backed militias in Iraq signal a willingness to disarm for the first time, in a potential effort to avoid direct confrontation with the Trump administration. This Day in Legal History: Wong Kim Ark becomes Wong Kim ArkOn March 28, 1898, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark, affirming that a child born in the United States to Chinese immigrant parents was a U.S. citizen by virtue of the Fourteenth Amendment. Wong Kim Ark was born in San Francisco in 1873 to Chinese nationals who were legally residing in the U.S. but ineligible for naturalization due to prevailing immigration laws. After a visit to China in 1895, he was denied re-entry on the grounds of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which severely restricted immigration from China and barred Chinese nationals from becoming citizens. The Court rejected the government's argument that children of Chinese immigrants were not subject to U.S. jurisdiction and thus not entitled to birthright citizenship. In a 6–2 decision, the Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed citizenship to nearly all individuals born on U.S. soil, regardless of the nationality or immigration status of their parents. This decision established a major precedent for interpreting the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and reinforced the principle of jus soli, or right of the soil. The ruling came during a period of intense anti-Chinese sentiment, when the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and its extensions aimed to restrict Chinese immigration and civil rights. Wong Kim Ark was a significant rebuke to efforts that sought to limit the constitutional rights of U.S.-born children of immigrants, and it laid the foundation for future interpretations of birthright citizenship. The Senate's vote to repeal the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's $5 cap on overdraft fees is a clear signal: protecting bank profits matters more to Senate Republicans than shielding consumers from predatory financial practices. With a 52-48 vote, Republicans—joined by only one Democrat—moved to dismantle a regulation designed to curb exploitative overdraft charges that routinely hit working-class Americans the hardest. This isn't a technical policy disagreement—it's a choice to side with an industry that routinely charges Americans up to $35 for covering small shortfalls, even when the overdrafted amount is often less than the fee itself. The CFPB's rule was narrow, targeting only large banks and credit unions with more than $10 billion in assets, and still allowed higher fees if justified by actual costs. It was a modest, evidence-based consumer protection measure. The financial industry's immediate lawsuit and the GOP's use of the Congressional Review Act to kill the rule reveal the coordinated effort to preserve a lucrative revenue stream. The overdraft fee fight is just one piece of a broader Republican strategy to roll back protections the CFPB has implemented—protections meant to hold powerful financial institutions accountable. No one should mistake this vote as anything other than what it is: an effort by Senate Republicans to keep consumers on the hook, ensuring that banks and credit unions can continue bleeding them dry in the name of "choice" and "flexibility"—buzzwords that conveniently mask an enduring deference to corporate power. They'll couch these kinds of moves in language of fairness–pretending they ensure lower-income consumers are given access to these financial instruments. A moment's reflection, however, makes it clear that even under their best dressed reasoning they're looking to enable banks to charge exorbitant fees to account holders in precarity. Senate Votes to Repeal CFPB's $5 Cap on Bank Overdraft Fees (1)Yesterday, President Donald Trump issued an executive order against the prominent law firm WilmerHale, following its connections to Robert Mueller, the former special counsel who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The order directs federal agencies to cancel contracts with WilmerHale's clients, revoke lawyers' security clearances, and restrict access to U.S. government buildings. This is part of a broader strategy targeting law firms with ties to Mueller's investigation, including Perkins Coie, Paul Weiss, and Jenner & Block.Trump criticized Mueller's investigation as an example of government overreach, labeling it as politically motivated. In addition to its ties to Mueller, Trump also accused WilmerHale of discriminatory practices in its diversity programs, echoing similar claims against other law firms earlier this month. The firm, which has a long-standing history of handling high-profile cases, responded by labeling the order unlawful and vowed to seek appropriate remedies.WilmerHale, a major player in litigation with over 1,100 lawyers, represents a variety of high-profile clients, including Gilead, Comcast, and Meta Platforms. The firm has also been involved in cases challenging actions taken by the Trump administration, fueling further tensions. Notably, Trump also targeted other firms for their involvement in the Russia investigation and opposition research, but some, like Paul Weiss, have managed to have orders rescinded by agreeing to specific terms, including providing legal services aligned with Trump's agenda.Trump Hits WilmerHale With Executive Order Over Mueller Ties (2)Trump targets another law firm, citing ties to Robert Mueller | ReutersA federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a Labor Department rule that would force grant recipients to abandon their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The decision, issued by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly in Chicago, halts a two-week enforcement window of a January executive order that required organizations receiving federal funds to certify they don't operate any DEI initiatives—even those unrelated to their grants. The case was brought by Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT), a nonprofit that trains women for skilled labor jobs and receives federal funding. The judge sided with CWIT's argument that the DEI restriction violates First Amendment protections, noting that such a rule could pressure grantees into self-censorship. Kennelly also blocked the Labor Department from terminating CWIT's funding under Trump's directive to eliminate “equity-related grants,” though this protection applies only to CWIT and not nationwide.Kennelly's order represents a legal pushback against Trump's broader effort to dismantle DEI initiatives across government agencies and contractors. While a federal appeals court recently upheld a temporary ban on DEI programs in federal agencies and contracting businesses, this ruling suggests courts may scrutinize how far the administration can go in policing DEI-related activity outside direct federal oversight. The ruling underscores an emerging legal battleground over free speech, anti-discrimination law, and the limits of executive authority in regulating DEI efforts.Judge blocks Trump's Labor Department from requiring grant recipients to abandon DEI | ReutersA federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to preserve Signal messages exchanged by top officials regarding planned military strikes in Yemen. The messages, inadvertently shared with a journalist from The Atlantic, revealed internal discussions involving Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe about timing and targets of attacks against the Houthi militant group. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg's ruling mandates that all Signal messages sent between March 11 and March 15 be retained by the agencies involved. The order came in response to a lawsuit filed by American Oversight, a government watchdog group, which argued that the use of auto-deleting messaging apps like Signal violated federal record-keeping laws. The lawsuit doesn't focus on the national security aspects of the disclosure but rather on the legal obligation of government agencies to preserve official communications. The controversy deepened after Attorney General Pam Bondi publicly criticized Boasberg, accusing him of political bias and claiming he was attempting to obstruct Trump's agenda. Trump himself has previously called for Boasberg's impeachment after the judge blocked a deportation policy targeting Venezuelan migrants—an action later upheld by an appeals court. The White House has not commented on the matter, but the episode has sparked scrutiny over the administration's handling of sensitive military planning and whether efforts to bypass official communication channels undermine transparency and accountability.Judge orders Trump administration to preserve Yemen attack plan messages | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Sergei Rachmaninoff. This week's closing theme is one of the most beloved and instantly recognizable moments in all of classical music: Variation XVIII from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, in a solo piano arrangement by Schultz. Rachmaninoff composed the Rhapsody in 1934 during his later years in exile from Russia, blending his romantic sensibilities with virtuoso brilliance. The work is a set of 24 variations on the 24th Caprice by Niccolò Paganini, itself a legendary theme known for dazzling technical demands. While most of the piece is fiery and rhythmic, the 18th variation stands apart—lyrical, sweeping, and emotionally expansive. In fact, it's a musical inversion of Paganini's theme, reimagined as a lush romantic melody that seems to rise straight out of the piano's depths. Rachmaninoff himself admitted it was his favorite part of the piece, and it's easy to understand why: it's tender, grand, and full of longing. This solo arrangement by Schultz pares down the orchestral drama but keeps all the expressive power, letting the piano sing with full-hearted warmth. The variation has since transcended its classical origins, appearing in films, commercials, and pop culture, yet it never loses its emotional punch. It's the kind of music that doesn't need explanation—it just resonates.Rachmaninoff, ever the late Romantic in a century veering toward modernism, poured his soul into his music. This variation, placed deep in a virtuosic whirlwind, emerges like a moment of clarity—an unguarded confession in a storm. Let it carry you out this week. This is a public episode. (March 25, 2025)Trump Administration accidentally included reporter in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn't think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling. With the release of its fourth and final round of color-coded hazard maps this morning, California's firefighting agency is showing just how much of the state is prone to wildfire — and how much that computationally-modeled danger zone has grown since the state issued its last round of local hazard maps more than a decade ago. A federal judge refused Monday to withdraw his block on President Donald Trump's deportation flights of alleged members of Venezuela's crime gang Tren de Araragua under the Alien Enemies Act. Trump team accidentally texts Yemen ‘war plans' to journalist at The Atlantic. Voters fleeing high tax states. Attack on Tesla vehicles increasing. Judge reaffirms order blocking Trump from using wartime powers for deportations. Door Dash introducing a layaway plan. US infrastructure ratings.
PRESS REVIEW – Tuesday, March 25: The press decries a massive security breach after a journalist for The Atlantic is accidentally included on a group chat for Yemen war plans. Also: Colorado state officials take down a portrait of Donald Trump after he complains it is unflattering. The Oscar-winning Palestinian director of "No Other Land" is attacked and arrested in the West Bank. Plus: we look at the creepiest contender in The Guardian's invertebrate of the year competition! In The Atlantic, editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg describes how he was accidentally sent the details of military strikes in Yemen. The journalist was added to a group chat called "Houthi PC small group" alongside JD Vance, Pete Hegseth and Marco Rubio among others. At first, Goldberg says, it seemed so surreal he thought it was a disinformation campaign. But he realised it was real when the bombs started falling. Foreign Policy describes the incident as horrifying. The mistake is sparking outrage from both sides of the political spectrum. The National Review asks Who's Getting Fired for This? The right-wing magazine was quick to point the finger at Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. The New York Times, called for the same, headlining: If Pete Hegseth Had any Honor, He Would Resign.Staying in the US, The Washington Post brings us the story that a Trump portrait in Colorado is being taken down after he ranted about it on social media. Donald Trump took to Truth Social to complain about the painting. The Guardian says Republicans have called it "petty" whilst Democrats have called Trump an "insecure baby". The portrait will be removed from Colorado's state capitol building, but it could be replaced with a portrait from Russia. The BBC says that although Trump was not happy with the Colorado portrait, he does seem chuffed by the one Putin sent earlier, "a personal gift" according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The Washington Post also brings us a story from the Palestinian territories. Hamdan Ballal, one of the directors of the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land", has been attacked by a group of Jewish settlers and later arrested by the Israeli army. "No Other Land" recounts the destruction of a Palestinian community in the occupied West Bank which had been resisting forced displacement. Finally, The Guardian has announced its shortlist for invertebrate of the year. The frontrunner is Cymothoa exigua, a tongue-biting louse that lurks in the Pacific Ocean. When it comes across a fish it burrows into their tongue. But that's only the beginning. It then sucks the blood of the fish but doesn't kill it. Much worse, it turns itself into a tongue to feed it and keep it alive. Stranger still, the parasites start off male, but turn female once inside the tongue. They then prevent any other newcomers from turning female by excreting hormones, and then mate with whichever date they find lying around inside the gills of the fish. While Cymothoa exigua is presumably hoping to win the prize this year, nine other invertebrates have made the shortlist. You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

Ever since the Biden administration began bombing Yemen, its official spinmeisters have been babbling about commerce and global container shipping to justify it. The unspoken premise behind this justification is that an active genocide should be permitted to continue with zero economic repercussions of any kind, for Israel or anyone else. At this point, 60% of registered voters believe Joe Biden helped Hunter Biden with his foreign business dealings While the Legacy/mainstream media is doing it's best to hide that, word is getting out to more and more Americans about the Biden Crime Family Syndicate. Joe Scarborough had an unhinged rant on his show this morning, trying to paint Donald Trump as so much worse than the chaos caused by Joe Biden. That's really all they have left. They have to paint Trump as even worse, because Biden is polling terribly across all demographics, while the world is on fire. Someone at the Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota sent a mass text telling everyone to not attend any political rallies, especially pro-Trump ones or it could adversely affect their military careers. Again, the Left is so fearful of Trump, they are threatening members of the military if they choose to support him. Onto more news from Gaza and now the BBC had to admit Israel was right about the tunnels under the al-Shifa hospital. You know it's bad when even the BBC can no longer lie in the face of incontrovertible evidence. Soon others in Western media will have to start dealing with the truths coming from Israel, rather than parrot the propaganda from Hamas. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres made a fool of himself saying the killing of civilians by Israel is “unparalleled and unprecedented in any conflict” since was was made Secretary General. Couple of problems with that statement: Since he took office, over 600,000 people have died in the Tigray war in East Africa. Perhaps black lives don't matter? Then over 10,000 civilians were killed in Syria just in 2017, when he took over. And, 377,000 have died in the Yemen War during his tenure. Moving to January 6, we now have proof that government agents and police sprayed the crowd with rubber bullets, flash bang grenades, pepper spray and more without warning and seemingly without provocation. The videos clearly show the protesters milling at the foot of the Capitol, making no moves toward the doors, the windows or Capitol police. The investigation into this really needs to get moving faster, because the more we learn, the more is seems it really was a setup to go after Donald Trump. Elon Musk filed his suit against Media Matters for their willful fraud they have perpetrated and for the financial damage they have caused. The Left has to manufacture their grievance and this time it's going to cost them. Musk is not their typical target and they will likely pay a heavy price. Finally, Joe Biden can't even figure out how to properly pardon two turkeys before Thanksgiving. And, though he turned 81 yesterday, whomever on his staff to his picture before his birthday cake should be fired. It's a terrible image of the President and it truly looks as though, just like the rest of the world, his cake is on fire. About 900 prisoners will be exchanged over the next three days. A Saudi delegation has left the capital Sanaa after talks with Houthi rebels, but said more negotiations would be needed to reach an agreement to end the eight-year civil war. Also: Police in Kenya are trying to track down and save members of a cult starving themselves to death, and a Spanish woman has emerged from a cave after 500 days living in complete isolation from other humans.
Congress had a chance to assert its war powers and end U.S. assistance to Saudi Arabia in the Yemen War. But President Biden helped to strangle the effort in the cradle and a vote in December was never held. Quincy Institute Middle East expert Annelle Sheline joins us this week to talk about what happened, and Senator Bernie Sanders' pledge to bring the issue back in early 2023. Kelley and Dan also take stock of the two major issues in 2022 foreign policy — Russia/Ukraine and China — and how the Washington establishment is failing us on both fronts, pushing us dangerously towards a Great Power conflict we cannot win.More from Annelle Sheline:Delayed war powers vote risks further suffering in Yemen, Responsible Statecraft, Dec. 14, 2022Biden blesses MBS immunity for Khashoggi murder, Responsible Statecraft, Nov. 18, 2022The Yemen War in Numbers: Saudi Escalation and U.S. Complicity, Quincy Institute, March 22, 2022. On this edition of Parallax Views, Hassan El-Tayyab, Legislative Director for Middle East Policy at the Friends Committee on National Legislation, joins the show in the first segment to discuss the delay of the vote on the Yemen War Powers Resolution. For some years now Hassan has been at the front of the struggle to get Congress to act in ending the U.S. role in Yemen war vis-a-vis it's arms support for Saudi Arabia. In this conversation El-Tayyab discusses gives his thoughts on Sen. Bernie Sanders withdrawing from the resolution, the Biden administration's moves with regards to Saudi Arabia and the war in Yemen, common misunderstandings about the resolution (ie: the resolution would not necessarily end the war in Yemen but rather reduce U.S.), and more. In the second segment of the program, the Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization's Deborah Dash Moore joins us to discuss the history and traditions of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah and to comment on the recent spike in antisemitism in the U.S. Among the topics discussed in this conversation are the origins of Hanukkah and the traditions associated with it Maccabees, children's books about Hanukkah, the experience of Hanukkah in the German ghettos in WWII era, and more. Additionally, Deborah and I discuss Jewish contributions to culture, with a focus on Jewish humor and it's impact on comedy. We also delve into the issue of antisemitism, what drives it, scapegoating, and related topics.

The U.S. has been involved in a war in Yemen for years. It's time to end it now. In this episode, I talk to foreign policy expert Scott Horton. He explains how the U.S. got into the war, its convoluted politics, the human cost, and how we can help stop the carnage.
The House and Senate were always supposed to check the president's power in foreign affairs. But when partisan loyalties and an onslaught of domestic issues make legislation nearly impossible… what's a congress to do? This week, we talk to Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) about how Congress can take back its power in foreign affairs – and finally get some things done. We discuss his efforts to stop the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the animating power of a passionate public, and why he's optimistic about the future of congressional power in American foreign policy. This week Barbara is joined by Abduliziz who is a Saudi activist highlighting the ongoing war in Yemen by Saudi Arabia with backing from the USA. In this episode, you can hear details of the awful atrocities being inflicted on Yemeni people by a monarchy with no regard for the value of human life. Much of the current mainstream media is currently taken up with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the horrors being visited on the people of Ukraine. The people of Yemen have been bombed into famine and suffered incredible numbers of innocent death, including thousands of children, for SEVEN YEARS now and it continues to this day. On March 26th, the Irish Anti-War movement is holding a protest. It begins at 1pm at the Spire on O'Connell Street and will march from there to the Saudi Embassy. As many people as possible will be pulling specially commissioned body bags to represent and highlight the incredible death toll of this awful war. Join them if you can and please share the podcast episode to generate awareness and express solidarity.
