What a wild week it's been for NASA. With drastic budget cuts looming—pending any action by Congress—then comes the sudden and unexpected pulling of Jared Isaacman for the role of NASA Administrator, with no replacement named. Then came the very public split between President Trump and Elon Musk, and a flurry of furious Twitter/X and Truth Social postings, aimed at each other with razor-sharp edges. And finally, the proposed and drastic cuts to NASA outreach and education budgets, slimming them to nearly nothing. These are strange and concerning times for America's space agency, a premier global brand and icon of peaceful American prowess. We turned to Casey Dreier, the Chief of Space Policy for The Planetary Society, who has been quite vocal in his concern, for context. These are critical times for spaceflight, so you won't want to miss this episode!Headlines Trump and Musk "Bromance" Ends: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik discuss the public falling out between Donald Trump and Elon Musk, which included Trump's threats to cancel SpaceX contracts and Musk's counter-accusations regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files. Commercial Crew Program and Boeing's Starliner: Tariq Malik highlights the critical role of SpaceX's Dragon in NASA's commercial crew program, especially given Boeing's Starliner delays, making NASA dependent on SpaceX for U.S. independent access to space. LAUNCH Act: Rod Pyle introduces the bipartisan LAUNCH Act, aimed at streamlining licensing for commercial space companies to encourage more rocket launches with faster approvals. Senate Reconciliation Bill: Tariq Malik and Rod Pyle discuss Senator Ted Cruz's Senate reconciliation bill, which proposes to restore funding for the Space Launch System (SLS), increase NASA's budget by $10 billion, and fund Artemis 4 and 5, missions previously targeted for alternate architectures. 60th Anniversary of First U.S. Spacewalk: The hosts commemorate Ed White's historic spacewalk during the Gemini 4 mission in 1965 and discuss anecdotes and lingering questions surrounding the event. In the latest episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on June 6, 2025, Matt and Jen open with a wide-ranging look at U.S.–Canada relations — and the increasingly difficult balancing act both countries are trying to manage. The Americans need to show they're getting wins. Canada needs to show it's not caving. That creates a dangerous mismatch in incentives, especially under an unpredictable U.S. administration. Matt and Jen also reflect on the passing of Marc Garneau — a Canadian hero and, for many, a symbol of what our politics used to feel like. But even that moment of mourning sparked backlash online, with public anger toward the Trudeau era spilling over into places it doesn't belong. The rage isn't fading. It's just finding new targets. This episode of The Line Podcast is brought to you by Unsmoke Canada. Canada can be a global leader in reducing the harm caused by smoking, but it requires actionable steps, including giving adult smokers the information they need to choose potentially less harmful alternatives. Learn more at Unsmoke.ca.In the second segment, your hosts ask: can only Carney "go to China”? Or rather, can he take on major national challenges — like internal trade barriers, resource development, and a strained relationship with India — precisely because they're problems the Liberals helped cause? There's some evidence of a pivot already. And in late-breaking news, Narendra Modi has been invited to the G7. Matt and Jen ask the obvious question: was ending (alleged!) state-sponsored assassinations in Canada a precondition for the invite? Finally, in Segment 3: the big, beautiful breakup. Donald Trump and Elon Musk are at war. Yes, it's hilarious. But it's also dangerous. Their falling out could unleash chaos — not just between their egos, but among their armies of online followers, institutional proxies, and political hangers-on. It's going to get ugly. And the U.S. might feel the damage for a long time. All that, and more, in the latest episode of The Line Podcast. Like and subscribe at ReadTheLine.ca, or find us on your favourite podcast app so you never miss an episode. And if you're enjoying the show, post about it online, tell a friend — or just mutter “only Carney can go to India” under your breath the next time you see a G7 headline. We'll know what you mean.

Humans generate an incredible amount of trash. In Canada alone, 35 million tonnes of food is wasted every year. That's a lot of energy spent growing, processing, packaging and delivering food that ultimately goes uneaten — and all that waste creates a lot of greenhouse gases. To fix the climate, we have to redefine our relationship with waste; that means doing more with what we already produce. In this episode, we head up into space to see how astronauts deal with their waste, travel to a facility to learn how food scraps are being transformed into biogas and explore how the concept of circularity could help us manage our resources better. It's time to face the waste. Featured in this episode:Marc Garneau is a former astronaut and current Member of Parliament. During his space career, he logged nearly 700 hours in orbit, learning firsthand the value of maximizing resources and repurposing waste.Annie Meier, a chemical engineer and principal investigator at NASA, is the team lead on a trash-to-gas project called OSCAR (Orbital Syngas Commodity Augmentation Reactor), a technology that provides a new way of managing waste in space.Tammara Soma is an assistant professor at SFU and research director at The Food Systems Lab. As a food systems and waste expert, she researches the impact food waste has on the climate as well as solutions that could help bring greater circularity to the food system.Brandon Moffatt is the co-founder and vice president of StormFisher Hydrogen, a company focused on utilizing waste streams to create better uses for waste products. One of those areas: food-waste diversion. He walks us through the process of transforming organic waste to sources of energy.Chris Bataille is an independent consultant and applied policy researcher, working for Columbia University, Simon Fraser University and IDDRE in Paris. It's always fun getting to play silly tricks on fellow teammates. Sometimes they get a laugh out of everyone, and sometimes they cause a company phone line to be overloaded with phone calls! In this episode, I share the story of how my co-astronaut Sally Ride decided to play a bit of a joke on mission control during our wake-up call. I share what happened when the joke caused people to call into a mission control landline and eventually crashed it. I also explain how I helped Marc Garneau, the first Canadian in space, to have some fun and show a bit of Canadian pride. “I'm a rookie. I'm not playing jokes like that anytime soon. Lest it cost me the opportunity to fly again.” - Kathy Sullivan “We learned later that the phone lines in mission control crashed completely within about two minutes of his doing that as people raced to call in and see if they could actually talk to John or maybe even get patched through and talk to the space shuttle.” - Kathy Sullivan This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores: The wake-up routine during a mission in space A prank game between astronauts and mission control How a mission control landline crashed How I helped the first Canadian in space, Marc Garneau, share some Canadian pride Spaceship Not Required I'm Kathy Sullivan, the only person to have walked in space and gone to the deepest point in the ocean.
