I used the word formaldehyde, but I clearly wanted to say chloroform. Why didn't anyone correct me? Water: Aromatic Tonic Water from Fever-Free, Aromatic Bitters & Soda from The Bitter Housewife, and Lightwave from Kin Euphorics.
Summary: The Lads are revisiting that classic show gem...GUM TRACKS. They share what new Gum Tracks they are chewing on now. Let them know what some of yours are! ***Don't forget you can call and leave a message swearing up a shit storm for the foul-mouthed philanthropists! Calls will be aired on future episodes. Get wild with it. -4 dashes Aromatic Bitters. (We used Bitter Truth Old Time Aromatic Bitters) -4 dashes Orange Bitters. -Dark Cherry -Lemon Twist -Orange Peel In a rocks glass, muddle the cherry then add ice. Combine the booze, syrup, and bitters in the glass and stir to combine. Add the lemon twist and orange peel. The point of this cocktail was experimenting with flavors while still making it an Old Fashioned. You can use any kind of whisky you want (bourbon, rye, whiskey, whisky, Canadian...what the fuck ever). As for the sweetening agent, go nuts and try new shit. Use the cherry juice as the sweetener. Fuck it! Experiment and enjoy. Quote du Jour: Coach Ben - "Look at me solving problems like I am fucking Oprah eating cauliflower pizza!" Less than two decades ago if you wanted bitters other than the faithful Angostura and Peychard, you would have to make them yourself. And that’s where Bitter Truth stepped in. After have made bitters in their own bars, Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck decided to open up their creations to the world. We talk to Stephan about scaling up, the bitters in their range and of course the best way in cocktails to use them.
Hi Folks! This episode is all about the “Suffering Bastard” cocktail and yes Paola brought along Justin to help us with Disney segment (and no…he is not a suffering bastard LOL). This drink was made back in the 40s in Egypt of all places. The bartender Joe Shalom, who was a Jewish Egyptian, made this drink as a hangover remedy due to poor supplies provided to the bar. He had to beg, borrow and yes even steal ingredients as tiki culture is like for ingredients. Joe spoke 8 languages and was a popular bartender who rubbed elbows with kings, the rich, and even movie stars. On our Disney and Tiki segment, we brought in Justin who has been to 11 out of 12 Disney parks and has a fascination for Tiki. He goes over some of the history on how Walt Disney infused tiki culture into his parks and still happens today. From talking birds and tiki statues to exploding volcanos, we cover it all in the segment for you. He even brought me a gift so listen to find out what it is… In “Did you know?” segment: we cover information about Joe Shalom. Just after the war (1952), British occupation areas was destroyed including Joe’s workplace. He was put in jail as they figured him as a spy. He was later released and fled the country with his family. He was picked up by the Hiltons who had him help build bars around the world for them and everywhere he went, so did the Suffering Bastard. Recipe: 1 oz Gin (suggest a London dry gin), 1 oz Brandy, 0.5 oz Lime Cordial, 2 dashes Aromatic Bitters, and about 4 oz Ginger Beer. You are going to shake this except the ginger beer. Garnish with an orange wheel and a sprig of Mint…yes, I guess Joe found that somewhere in Cairo.
We are covering today the Singapore Sling. Yes, that classic drink you hear get ordered once in awhile at a bar but always wondered what is in this drink and where did it come from? Hmmm...Singapore! This classic cocktail doesn't exactly fall into the tiki cocktails but its tropical and we will talk about when, where and what has happened to this drink over the years. It was forgotten for awhile and but then re-surfaced with questions on its recipe. We go through what is a sling and its origin as well. Two great recipes we will discuss and give you below to try out and see which one you prefer. Now you are asking yourself what kind of gin would I use int his amazing drink, we will cover that too. We get into the Smuggler's Cove story about an amazing bar and actually the book as well which most bartenders call the "tiki bible" now. New Segment: Word Translation which we will do basic words and phrases and translate them into Hawaiian and Spanish for you to learn on those tropical trips down south. On "Did You Know?" we will cover some Polynesian facts and cool things like bread in a mailbox. Yes...you will have to find out why. recipes: Boon recipe: 1 1/2 oz Gin 1/2 oz Cherry Herring 1/4 oz Cointreau 1/4 oz Benedictine 4 oz pineapple juice 1/2 oz lime juice 1/3 oz grenadine, and dash Angostura Bitters smuggler’s Cove recipe: 1 1/2 oz Gin, 1/2 oz Cherry liqueur (brandy), 1/4 oz Benedictine, 1/4 oz Simple Syrup, 1/2 oz Lemon Juice, 2 oz Soda Water, dash Aromatic Bitters, dash Orange Bitters word translation: English to Spanish to Hawaiian: Hello: HOLA Aloha, Good bye: Adios Aloha, How are you? Hey Everyone, Welcome to episode 43! Today we're going to talk about Aromatic Bitters. In this episode, you'll hear us talk about lots of history, the IBA standard cocktails, and how the history of bitters is closely tied to the history of cocktails. Thanks for listening!
