Holiday Horrorshow: It’s a #Christmassacre! Folks, I don’t know who this “Karen” is, but she ain’t sending no fruitcake this year. She’s got the goods, the bad goods, the kind of holiday cheer that ends with an axe handle to the skull! This week, your “Scary Spirits” crew—that’s Karen and some guy named Greg—are strapping in for a festive slice of cinematic sleaze that knows how to put the massacre back in Christmas. We’re talking about the 2015 low-budget holiday horror flick, Secret Santa (or as the cool kids and the drive-in marquee call it, Christmassacre)! Will the interperonal drama be less painful than the gore? Will the special effects look like a melted snowman? And exactly how many cocktails does it take to get through a flick where Santa’s sleigh is replaced by a meat wagon? They’re downing a special, holly-jolly-spooky concoction they call the “Candy Cane Margarita.” Trust me, that drink’s probably got more kick than the movie, but you gotta listen to find out! Get ready for: #HolidayHorror: Not your grandma’s Christmas special. #SlasherFilm: A body count that will make your stocking blush. #BMovie: The best kind of bad cinema, 2015-style. #MovieReview: Karen and Greg break down the cheese and the carnage. #CultClassic: Is this the next great trash gem? Tune in, turn up the volume, and prepare for a Christmas that’s anything but silent. Candy Cane Margarita • 3/4 cup tequila, Blanco, or Silver• 1/4 cup Triple Sec or Cointreau• 1/4 cup lime juice, about 4 limes• 2 oz simple syrup• 2 oz grenadine• 4 cups ice• 2 candy canes, for the rim Instructions: Place the candy canes in a zip bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Or, for a finer rimming sugar-like texture, place them in a blender and pulse to crush them into a powdery mixture. Place the crushed candy canes on a plate. Rub a lime wedge along the rim of your glass and dip it into the crushed candy cane. Add all the ingredients inside a blender and blend until smooth. Adjust the thickness of the margarita, if necessary, by adding a little more ice. Pour the Margaritas into the prepared glasses. Source: tequilaoclock.com A Brief Synopsis: A group of college kids, struggling to get through the hectic exam period, plan a liquor-filled party. Adding a Secret Santa, little do they know that a killer is in town and has a special present for all the good (and bad) girls and boys. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: Karen tells us the side effects of sleep deprivation. Can you be killed by an electric appliance falling into the bath tub while bathing? Greg makes a reference to the lovely Jill Wagner. Our rating of the film: This movie was so bad that it took us 4 cocktails to get through it. Take our online survey! We want to know more about you! Please take our survey. Special guest Richard Withagen (Equity Analyst at Kepler Cheuvreux) joins us as we review the latest earnings results from the spirits industry (Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Brown-Forman, Campari, Rémy Cointreau, and Becle). Alongside individual company results, we discuss the broader impact of regulation on spirits sales, how long a transitory/cyclical downturn can be before it is considered structural, the sharp shift in fortunes between geographies, and the difficulty of off-loading unwanted brands when literally everyone else is doing the same thing. Send us a textA Halloween drink in hand and 13 Disney nightmares on deck—this one leans delightfully spooky. We start with a DIY sangria riff worthy of Disney Springs: Pinot Noir softened by pear liqueur, Cointreau, apple juice, and those gummy eyeballs that stare back. Then we push straight into the chills and chuckles: stuck-ride purgatory with looping music, the sudden dread of being named Rebel Spy right after a Dole Whip, and the slow horror of a limited-edition popcorn bucket rolling into the crowd during fireworks, never to return. From there, we get bolder. Imagine outdoor-only queues with no shade or fans. Picture an app that nags you to book Lightning Lanes when all you want is to eat. Consider step limits that end your park day at 10,000 and turn zigzag lines into strategic minefields. And yes, we talk food—because nothing shakes a Disney loyalist like messing with snacks. How about fenced eating zones with 15-minute time caps? Or a property-wide pivot to pickle-flavored everything: churros, shakes, beignets, even a briny breakfast wrap. We also mourn the idea of beloved staples disappearing and debate what happens when the only ice cream is divisive. It's funny until it isn't.We keep it human with the small moments that sting: kids correcting your lore with absolute certainty, balloon-photo pileups that halt foot traffic, and the Skyliner pausing midair while strangers share your glass cube. We even let Figment judge our snack choices from the walls and joke about a Jar Jar mover ride that tests patience and canon. Under the laughs is a real point: the magic relies on freedom, variety, and tiny kindnesses that keep the day feeling effortless. Take those away, and the happiest place gets a little haunted. If you're here for theme park talk with humor, honesty, and a dash of Halloween, you're in the right place. Press play, sip something spooky, and tell us your own Disney nightmare. And hey—if you're enjoying the show, tap follow, share it with a park pal, and leave a quick review so more fans can find us.

Well this was an interesting event, find out why in the beginning of this episode. It was not what we were expecting. The great thing about this episode is that we were able to cover a film that starred both Val Kilmer and Michael Madsen, who both passed away this year. This film is available to watch on Tubi. After Faye (Joanne Whalley) and her psychotic boyfriend, Vince (Michael Madsen), successfully rob a mob courier, Faye decides to abscond with the loot. She heads to Reno, where she hires feckless private investigator Jack Andrews (Val Kilmer) to help fake her death. He pulls the scheme off and sets up Faye with a new identity, only to have her skip out on him without paying. Jack follows her to Vegas and learns he's not the only one after her. Vince has discovered that she's still alive.Nevada Double-Cross (ChatGPT):Ingredients2 oz bourbon (rich, desert heat backbone)0.75 oz fresh lemon juice (sharp, cutting through the sweetness)0.5 oz honey syrup (equal parts honey + hot water, stirred until smooth)0.5 oz Cointreau (or triple sec, for a citrus lift)Dash of Angostura bittersLemon peel + sprig of thyme for garnishDirectionsAdd bourbon, lemon juice, honey syrup, Cointreau, and bitters into a shaker with ice.Shake hard until well chilled.Strain into a chilled coupe or rocks glass over one big ice cube.Express lemon peel over the top, then garnish with the peel and a sprig of thyme.Kill Me Again (1989) Drinking Game:Take a sip when…Someone smokes a cigarette.Val Kilmer looks sweaty or stressed.Fay (Joanne Whalley) manipulates or seduces someone.Someone says or implies they can't trust anyone.A bag of money is mentioned or shown.Take two sips when…There's a sudden betrayal.Fay changes her story or motives.Someone pulls a gun in a moment of high tension.Kilmer's character (Jack) gets punched, knocked around, or physically overpowered.Take a big gulp when…A car chase or tense driving scene kicks in.A character is double-crossed and doesn't see it coming. The Nevada desert is shown in a dramatic wide shot.Finish your drink if…The ending twist makes you go “wait, WHAT?”The money changes hands for the last time.As always, drink responsibly and with others. Last October Nine corralled a posse of market mix model (MMM) providers, co-funding a program to prove what its assets could do in hard business terms. Since then Nine has poured over three years of historical data from dozens of campaigns, along with brand tracking, consumer attitudinal research, business case studies and other inputs from the likes of Neuro Insight, getting granular on what is moving the needle for brands – and how. Now the early results are in. Some are obvious – The Block generates product trials. Other findings less so – MAFS, for instance, drives trust and credibility as a halo effect for brands like Westpac. Meanwhile, Love Island Australia has Cointreau toasting a massive 42 per cent lift in consideration. Kia signed up to Nine’s $30m program – and marketing boss Dean Norbiato says the early MMM reads now have him plotting channel reallocations: “Looking at the first cut [of MMM data], it would be commercially negligent not to,” said Norbiato, though noting that a broad mix of channels has been crucial to driving growth for Kia, and that TV advertising and tent pole sponsorships have hugely influenced performance marketing results. But Norbiato, plus Nine’s Stewart Gurney and Nikki Rooke, underline a combination of short, medium and long-term strategies, across a broad mix of channels, and layering network effects, are critical growth drivers. Overall, binary pursuit of one-dimensional metrics like ROI is likely to backfire – and MMMs have limits, which even Mutinex co-founder and global CEO, Henry Innis acknowledges. He says there is no silver bullet to give marketers a universal fix. Growth is nuanced, multi-layered and complicated – much harder than lightweight “easy sell, dollar in, dollar out” ROI metrics, per Kia’s Norbiato. But there are ways to start understanding how to put a better plan together, and optimise with sharper data more rapidly. “And that gives you a much bigger seat at the senior management table.” Now Norbiato’s moving to act on the MMM data: “We need to get further understanding, but this initial cut is definitely going to sharpen that [channel] selection.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If you have listened to the podcast for awhile, you have probably heard me reference the book Here For it: Or, How To Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas. It is a favorite of mine and had a big impact on me when I read it the first time in June of 2020, so I was SO excited when my friend and returning guest Izzie Call read it, loved it as well, and wanted to come on and talk about it with me. In the episode I referenced the review I wrote about it at the time, but then I never read the review so here it is: Eric Thomas grew up thinking he was a normal kid until others made him feel that he wasn't. Black, gay, and Christian, these essays reflect upon his experience of never fitting in, being discriminated against, and his hopeful journey to find his place in a country that he loves. Thomas' conversational writing style draws the reader in, and his ability to add humor to heartbreaking moments truly make these stories come to life. In a time when we can all use to learn more about other's experiences, this book was enlightening and truthful, with jokes that landed like Kerri Strug in the ‘96 Olympics. My guest this week is the always delightful Izzie Call. Izzie works as a museum educator for the VMFA coordinating projects related to the permanent collections and special exhibition displays including digital components, labels, and webresources. Izzie is a lifelong, passionate educator and feels most at home speaking about art with those who have an interest in learning. Also, thank you to Eric Thomas for sharing his favorite drink with me when in a moment of bravado (delusion?) Sometimes we theme our episodes, sometimes we offer a mixed bag of tastes and goodies. This episode is all about the latter…We start with the first of our products, the unique and delicate spirit distilled from the flower of the coconut palm, Ceylon Arrack. Our second pick takes the ABVs up a few notches, it's Redbreast Single Pot Irish Whiskey, but the Cask Strength version coming in at 57.5% ABV.There are an abundance of drinking suggestions in our book choice, How To Drink by Victoria Moore, as well as in this week's bar, none other than the exceptional establishment which sits at No 1 on The World's 50 Best Bars list. It is, of course, Handshake in Mexico City. Our guest is equally fabulous, it's the co-founder of Paradiso in Barcelona, the driving force behind Women and Hospitality, owner of hospitality design company MS Bar Trends, and now co-founder of flower-inspired bar Gardenias in Lisbon, the one, the only Ms Margarita Sader. For more from The Cocktail Lovers, visit thecocktaillovers.comFor the products featured in this episode, see websites below:What we're mixing:Sparkling Rita30ml reposado tequila15ml Cointreau150ml grapefruit soda/sparkling grapefruitMethod: Fill tumbler with ice, pour tequila and Cointreau. The song “Welcome to New York” has been in my head all week preparing for this episode on the book Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise, a witty and revealing memoir by renowned food critic Ruth Reichl. During her time as The New York Times restaurant critic, Reichl went undercover in elaborate disguises to avoid preferential treatment and uncover the truth about New York's dining scene. Blending memoir, food writing, and restaurant reviews, the book offers delicious behind-the-scenes stories, vivid character sketches, and reflections on identity, privilege, and the power of perception, all served under the iconic Manhattan skyline. The amazing person who came to me with this book is Mandy Naglich, an author, journalist, and certified taster. She travels the world to report stories on food and drink culture for a variety of outlets as well as her own personal platform, Drinks with Mandy. Her award-winning book, How to Taste, takes readers on a journey into their senses and introduces them to the quirky characters in the world of professional tasting along the way. Built on a backbone of Jamaican rum, lime juice, Cointreau, and sugar, the Golden Glove first appeared on the menu at Havana's El Floridita, crafted by none other than Constante Ribalaigua Vert, the bar's legendary owner and blender-in-chief. Bringing it into the 21st Century for us today — albeit with a heavy dose of historical influence — is Pepper Stashek of New York's dedicated Daiquiri destination, Bar Kabawa. Listen on (or read below) to discover Pepper's Golden Glove recipe — and don't forget to leave us a review wherever you get your podcasts! Pepper Stashek's Golden Glove Recipe - 2 ounces aged Jamaican rum, such as Appleton Signature - 1 teaspoon Cointreau - 1 tablespoon granulated white sugar - ¾ ounce fresh lime juice (Key lime/Persian lime blend) - ⅛ teaspoon Xanthan gum - 142 grams pebble ice - Garnish: orange twist Directions 1. Add all ingredients to a blender (including ice). 2. Blend until smooth. 3. Pour into a 10 ounce chilled coupe glass and garnish with a large orange twist.
Hier in Nederland zelfs. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We're back with season 9 and over the next few weeks we'll be talking to some of the fabulous people we've met up with during our recent travels but this episode begins, as always with our chosen products: the first of which is Be-Gin a gin celebrating all things flowers and the second, a new range from Cointreau which zones in on citrus. Our book is spiritual wisdom, seasonality and locality personified, it's Hyper Drinks, the debut book from Angelos Bafas aka Mr Ungarnished, and we head to Shoreditch for Waltz, the new bar from Gento Torigata. For our first interview of the season we're talking to Rodrigo Urraca, Marcos Di Battista and Eric Van Beek, the dream team behind Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City, recently taking the top slot on North America's 50 Best Bars List for the second consecutive year and currently number one in the world. We hear from them about the highs and lows of being number one and why they won't have their awards on the back bar. What we're mixing:Grand Mimosa90ml sparkling wine45ml orange juice15ml Grand MarnierOrange zest or slice to garnishMethod: Add 45ml of sparkling wine to a chilled wine glass, the add the fresh orange juice and Grand Marnier. I hadn't seen this movie in a very long time and I forgot a lot about it, which means I am sure you have as well, that or you have never seen the film. If you are wondering, Beverly Hills Ninja is about a young American boy that washes ashore near a village populated by skilled Japanese warriors, they raise the child as one of them and instruct him in the ways of ninjitsu. Unfortunately, he grows up to be the overweight and inept but very enthusiastic Haru (Chris Farley), who remains intent on becoming a real ninja. Haru's first assignment -- protecting a beautiful woman from California -- doesn't go smoothly, since he's both uncoordinated and completely unaccustomed to Western culture.Beverly Hills Iced Tea (diffordsguide.com):Ingredients3⁄4 oz Hayman's London Dry Gin3⁄4 oz Ketel One Vodka1 oz Cointreau triple sec liqueur1⁄2 oz Lime juice (freshly squeezed)1⁄2 oz Monin Pure Cane Syrup (65.0°brix, equivalent to 2:1 rich syrup)Top up with Brut champagne/sparkling wineDirectionsShake first five ingredients with ice and strain into ice-filled glass. MONEY & WEALTH! Chris kicks Episode 92 off with a (clearly very legitimate) pyramid scheme sales pitch to Amanda and Matt, who prove, yet again, that there's a sucker born every minute. But the talk quickly shifts to hard-hitting money truths—childhood lessons we ignored, what “F-you money” really means, Rockefeller's quip about craving “just a little bit more,” and how ego sabotages our savings. Along the way, Amanda reveals her Cadbury Egg obsession knows no budget, Matt dreams of cruising in a Saab 900, and Chris suggests tipping valet drivers with $2 bills like a benevolent Bond villain. DRINKS IN THIS EPISODE:CLASSIC DAQUIRI >> 2 oz light rum, 1 oz fresh lime juice, ¾ oz simple syrup. In a cocktail shaker with ice, shake vigorously until well-chilled, strain into a coupe, and enjoy this bright, citrusy nod to Hemingway, JFK, and warm spring nights.THE WHITE LADY>> 2 oz gin, ¾ oz triple sec (or Cointreau), ¾ oz lemon juice, 1 egg white. Dry shake, then shake with ice, strain into a coupe. The once-maligned White Lady gets her long-overdue redemption.MINT JULEP >> 2 oz Four Roses bourbon, ½ oz demerara simple syrup, Fresh mint (muddled + garnish). Muddle the mint with the demerara syrup in the bottom of a Julep glass and then discard the mint. Pour in the bourbon, stir, and then pack the glass with crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and serve with a metal straw. Enjoy the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby while making a reckless bet on the longshot to win it all.If you've been enjoying the 3Q3D podcast, please subscribe and consider giving us a rating, a review, or sharing an episode with a friend. In this episode, we review the latest earnings results from the spirits industry (Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Brown-Forman, Campari, Rémy Cointreau, Becle, and MGP Ingredients). Alongside individual company results, we discuss the impacts of declining sales in the US, the surprising health of the European market, the challenges created by aging inventory and wholesaler inventory, an evolution in pack and pricing strategy, the severe impact of a retaliatory Chinese anti-dumping investigation into cognac, and, of course, the fallout from the Trump-initiated trade wars with the US, Mexico, Canada and the European Union. Possibly one of our most favorite cocktails, and it will be yours too. The Brandy Crusta hails from New Orleans, the Fig Crusta hails from Jules' kitchen. Sip through history with us as we get into the story behind the Brandy Crusta. Stick around for tips on what to do with that bottle of Amaro Nonino that's collecting dust on your shelf – GASP!!! Brandy Crusta Glass: small stemmed wine glass, goblet, flute, something cool Directions & Ingredients First sugar the rim of your glass by wetting the top with lemon juice (rub a small piece of lemon around the top) and dab the top of the glass into a small pile of sugar on a plate Next, make your garnish by peeling a lemon by going around the lemon. Pick a hemishpere, north or south (because you can make 2 garnishes this way). Next take your peeler and go around the world. YOu should end with a wide strip of lemon. Now, curl the lemon peel and you'll notice that there seems one side (top or bottom) that is wider than the other – this is good. Curl the lemon so the wide opening is facing up and tuck it into the glass so just a little bit of the crow is showing and you've lined the inside of the glass with the peel. Now build your drink! In shaker add: 1.5 oz Cognac or Brandy 0.25 oz Cointreau or Orange Curacao 0.25 oz Maraschnio liqueur 0.5 oz Fresh lemon juice 0.25 oz Rich simple syrup (2:1) 1 dash Angostura bitters 1 dash Cardamon bitters (you can use 2 dash of Ango if you don't have this) Shake for 20 seconds Double strain through the center of your garnish When you or your guest goes to take their first sip, take a sniff first, then just push the peel down inside the glass, so you don't slob the drink all over your chin and shirt.
