If you are not watching Doctor Odyssey, you need to start now. It is one of those shows that is so cheesy that it's good. It's a guilty pleasure show for sure and I love it. I wanted to choose this episode because it features special guest stars Kelsea Ballerini and Margo Martindale as mother and daughter. I wasn't prepared for what this podcast episode turned out to be. Just so you know, Doctor Odyssey is about Max, who is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore. It stars Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Son, Sean Teale, Don Johnson and features so many guest stars, like the modern day Love Boat. Check it out on Hulu or on ABC.The Midnight Scalpel (I asked ChatGPT):Ingredients2 oz Dark Rum (bold and brooding, like the doc himself)0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice (for a sharp, clinical edge)0.5 oz Ginger Syrup (zingy and exotic, just like the locales)1 dash of Angostura Bitters (adds complexity like a backstory)Splash of Activated Charcoal (for that inky, moody drama)Top with Club SodaGarnish: Thin cucumber ribbon & a metal cocktail pick (like a surgical tool)DirectionsShake rum, lime juice, ginger syrup, bitters, and charcoal with ice.Strain into a highball or Collins glass over fresh ice.Top with club soda for fizz and tension.Garnish with the cucumber ribbon and silver pick - because it's Dr. Max Bankman and he doesn't do basic. For a mocktail version called Code Black, replace the rum with black iced tea like Earl Grey or Lapsang and remove the bitters.Doctor Odyssey Drinking Game:Drink when...they are in the infirmary.you see a guest star.you see gold medical instruments.someone says "We're losing them!" or "I need ___ccs now!"their watch goes off.something super cheesy happens.sexual tension between any of the main characters.they have to resuscitate someone. the medical staff tries something new and risky to save a life.Take a shot when...someone goes overboard.you see a country superstar as a guest star.for a cliffhanger. As always, drink responsibly and with others. The Moscow Mule is arguably the ultimate workhorse cocktail. Equally at home in high-class bars as well as neighborhood dives, it's a fantastic candidate for some high-brow hacks, should you be so inclined. We here at Cocktail College are so inclined, so we enlisted the help of Evan Hawkins, co-owner and beverage director of Romeo's, in New York's East Village. Listen on (or read below) to learn Evan's Moscow Mule recipe — and don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Evan Hawkins' Moscow Mule Recipe Recipe Ingredients - 1 ½ ounces vodka - ½ ounce fresh lime juice - 1 ¼ ounces ginger syrup (Liquid Alchemist / Cheeky) - Ginger beer - Angostura Bitters - Garnish: mint Directions 1. Add vodka, lime, and ginger syrup to a shaker with two Kold Draft cubes. 2. Whip shake until well chilled and strain into a tall glass. 3. Top with ginger beer, crushed ice, Angostura Bitters, and mint.
Despite having such a simple formula — it's a sour made using aromatic bitters as the base spirit — the Angostura Sour is a much more modern creation than you might expect, though it does enjoy something of a rich historical lineage. Joining us to explore that drink today is KJ Williams, a veteran bartender who these days works at New York's Long Island Bar. Listen on (or read below) to learn KJ's Angostura Sour recipe — and don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! KJ Williams' Angostura Sour Recipe Ingredients - 1 ounce grenadine - ¾ ounce fresh lime juice - 1 ½ ounces Angostura Bitters - ¼ ounce fresh egg white Directions 1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with no ice. 2. Whip dry shake for 10-12 seconds. 3. Add Kold Draft cubes and vigorously shake until chilled. 4. Double strain into a chilled Coupe glass.

We are back with more music and whiskey. Today we dive into 3 whiskies and see if celebrity whiskey can be good. badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== And today Whiskeydecisions.beehive.com Celebrity liquor brands are a real gray area when it comes to endorsements. As whiskey grows more popular, and more celebrities hop on the bandwagon, it can be hard to distinguish who's just taking a paycheck, and who cares about what you're drinking. But the good news is that increasingly, the big names attached to these bottles really care about the brand and the people who drink it. Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, who recently announced their new Dos Hombres mezcal, are just the latest in a series of famous people taking time out of their artistic careers to make artful beverages. What happens when a heavy metal band makes a whiskey? It's certainly not a quiet process. The Blackened American Whiskey is pummeled with low-hertz sound waves from a Metallica-curated playlist. It might sound like a marketing ploy, but distillers insist the sonic-enhancement process drives the whiskey deeper into the wood of the barrel where it picks up extra flavor. As for the tasting notes, expect honey, cinnamon, allspice, and some lingering apricot. New year, new you, right? Okay, by mid-January a bit of the luster has worn off those shiny new resolutions. In fact, National Today says that January 17 is actually the official Ditch New Year's Resolution Day. Still, even if all your grand plans to walk 5 miles a day, save half your paycheck, and subside off nothing but kale, quinoa, and spring water have come to naught, that doesn't mean you can't make some revised resolutions that will be both easier and more fun to follow. Like, how about you simply resolve to try a few new things? This is hardly likely to hurt, particularly if you choose things you already enjoy, such as sampling a few new bourbons. Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey Heaven's Door and retailers across the country selected barrels that vary in age, mashbill, and warehousing locations, in order to select their own Cask Strength Single Barrel Bourbon. This limited release will be hand numbered and adorned with our partners name, offering a distinctive experience. 750 ML, 49.5% ABV (99 PROOF) A blend of 4-5 yr. old straight rye and straight bourbon mashed, fermented, distilled and aged at the Cedar Ridge Distillery. Direct shipping is available in select markets. Unfortunately we do not ship to the states of AK, AL, HI, ID, MI, MS, OK, UT. Mashbill: 51% Corn, 35% Malted Rye, 14% Malted Barley “Think cinnamon, clove, butter and oak. As it hits the palate, it coats it with this goodness, buttery almost, dripping down the side of the cheeks and warms all throughout. There's a comfort here, cornbread-like, with notes of fried apple pie, apricot and macaroon. It finishes medium to long with a hint of bananas foster.” WAIT AND BLEED Ingredients: 2 oz No. 9 Reserve Whiskey 1 oz Sweet Vermouth 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters Equipment: Mixing glass Stirring spoon Strainer Chilled cocktail glass Instructions: Fill a mixing glass with ice cubes. Pour 2 ounces of No. 9 Reserve Whiskey into the mixing glass. Add 1 ounce of Sweet Vermouth to the glass. Add 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters to the mixture. Stir the ingredients gently but thoroughly using a stirring spoon for about 30 seconds to chill and combine them. Place a strainer over a chilled cocktail glass and strain the mixture into the glass. Optionally, garnish with a orange twist or cherry if desired. Sip and savor the bold and balanced flavors of Wait and Bleed. Enjoy responsibly!
In Episode 46, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh spend a lot of time talking about AI, but that still, as always, begins with the whiskey. Episode page We both asked ChatGPT to consider all our ingredients for making a whiskey-based cocktail, and to invent an original recipe. Jamie's is called The Bourbon Harmony, although there was a lot in there to try to reach harmony, and Mark's was called the Spiced Cherry Rye Cocktail. The verdict for both drinks was that they were good, but probably wouldn't be made a second time. We had slightly different tactics in prompting ChatGPT to generate our recipes, which we discussed. We then spent a little time recognizing the passing of Don Petersen, former CEO of Ford in the late 1980s. Peterson was very different from an automotive CEO at the time, disrupting many practices whose time had come. Most notably, he brought in Dr. Deming to help influence the transformation. The discussion then turned into a deeper dive into how a lean thinker might look at artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more. This explored governance of AI, having good standard work and workflow design around AI usage, lessons of effective delegation while treating AI like an employee, when to use it, and even a few tips and tricks along the way. We saved the discussion of whether AI will be the end of humanity for when we might have a stronger cocktail. Have AI design your new cocktail, make it yourself since AI can't do that, and sit down for this interesting discussion. Cheers, or in binary... 01100011 01101000 01100101 01100101 01110010 01110011 Links and Info From the Show: Jamie's Bourbon Harmony recipe: 2 oz Bourbon (used Elijah Craig Small Batch), 0.5 oz Lillet Blanc, 0.5 oz Aperol, 0.25 oz Drambuie, 2 dashes Orange Bitters, 1 dash Angostura Bitters, Orange peel (for garnish) Mark's Spiced Cherry Rye Cocktail recipe: 2 oz Rye Whiskey, 0.5 oz Tart Cherry Liqueur, 0.5 oz Italicus, 0.25 oz Green Chartreuse, 0.25 oz Aperol, 0.5 oz Lemon Juice, Garnish: Lemon twist or a few cherries News of former Ford CEO Don Petersen passing away and Mark's blog post adding much context, including Dr. Deming GrantThornton's report on AI risks Jamie's YouTube video linking AI and problem solving Wall Street Journal on whether AI causes job loss Wall Street Journal on how AI changes jobs Podcast feed at LeanWhiskey.com or leanblog.org/leanwhiskey or jflinch.com/leanwhiskey Please review us and follow or subscribe on your favorite podcast platform!
Some nut with a weird imagination gets all excited when the Winnie the Pooh classic hits the public domain and decides he needs to make a scary "what if" out of it. Being abandoned by Christopher Robin drives Pooh and Piglet to uncontrollable violent rage. Young women have a girls' getaway in the woods. Paths cross. You can probably guess the rest. Not a bad idea, but the execution misses. Poor writing and acting don't make you care about the characters. Repetitive, formulaic violence gets boring after a while. To be fair, an honest attempt on the budget available. It just doesn't do any one thing well. It was better than expected, based on the reviews, though. Maybe check it out if you're intrigued, but you probably won't watch it twice. Winnie the Pooh Blood & Honey Final Grades Steve: A good idea that missed the mark. Maybe after learning something here and getting a bigger budget for a planned sequel, they can put out a better product next time. 1.78/5 Brandon Couldn't hear things. Couldn't see things. Why don't British people speak English? This movie is like Pooh in your pool or Pooh in your treehouse or finding Pooh in your living room. Pooh. 1.59/5 Cocktail of the Week: The Bees Knees, two ways Steve gets gin, Brandon gets tequila 2 oz Gin or Tequila 1 oz Honey Syrup (50/50 Honey:Water) 3/4 oz Fresh-squeezed Lemon Juice A couple dashes Angostura Bitters for the Tequila version Shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and strain over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon peel. Cocktail Grade: Two very good cocktails. The tequila version with the bitters has a little better flavor profile than the gin version that is a little sweeter. Both of them are great if you've got a scratchy throat. It's just delicious cough syrup, really. Highly recommended for any sick days. ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

This week, we kick off Spooky Season with the only horror film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, The Silence of the Lambs. This Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins-led film is the story of an FBI cadet who is enlisted to ask a notorious serial killer for help with solving the latest string of serial murders. In the episode, we discuss how haunting Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter is, how the real FBI helped the production and actors make the film true to life, and we get a hankering for some more seasons of Mindhunter on Netflix. I read a great article from Katie Brown of Vinepair recently and it helped me understand something that's bothered me for quite some time... the label on the Angostura Bitters bottle! Listen in to see how that became the perfect imperfection. Cheers, KR #beermightythings #angosturabitters

"Hello Clarice..." "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." So many great lines from this film based on the book written by Thomas Harris, with the film starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. You can watch this film for free on Tube, Pluto, or Roku, so check it out if you haven't watched it yet. The film synopsis is: a young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims. Themed Cocktails: A classic glass of Chianti (I recommend Ruffino Riserva Ducale), but you can also opt for an actual cocktail... Hello, Clarice (cointreau.com): Ingredients 0.75 oz Cointreau 1.5 oz Rye whiskey 0.75 oz Fresh lemon juice 1 dash Angostura Bitters 0.5 oz Chianti float Directions Add Cointreau, whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and bitters to a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Hold a bar spoon with the back facing up, just above the cocktail's surface. Slowly pour the Chianti to layer. The Silence of the Lambs Drinking Game (drinkwhen.ca and sober.co): Someone says “Clarice” Someone says “Starling” You see a moth or a butterfly Hannibal looks directly into the camera / your soul Clarice has a flashback. Hannibal gives false information about Buffalo Bill. Someone dies or we see a dead body. Skin or Skinning is mentioned. Finish your drink during Buffalo Bill's famous dance! As always, drink responsibly and with friends. Share the podcast with others. Follow/Subscribe on your favorite streaming platform, leave me a five star review. Scott, Mary and Dave welcome in the New Year by re-watching Cronenberg's 1975 science fiction body horror film, "Shivers". Though disgusted by the truly awful use of child actors in a few scenes, the crew had a great time watching it, as always, and it gave them a chance to gush about the stunning (and gracious) Lynn Lowry. Dave's cocktail was actually a hit. Tabasco sauce has been around since 1868, Lea and Perrins' Worcestershire Sauce since 1837. So how have these brands managed to survive for so long? David Reid explores why some brands outlive their founders by more than a century. David speaks to Harold Osborn, CEO of McIlhenny Company which makes Tabasco. Patrick Barwise, emeritus professor of management and marketing at London Business School explains what happened when Coca Cola tried to 'tweak' their recipe. Samir Nanji, spokesperson at KraftHeinz who now own Lea and Perrins, explains the history of the sauce - and how an early batch didn't go too well. And Jake Burger, cocktail expert from Portabello Road Gin and The Ginstitute explains how Angostura Bitters outlasted prohibition to become a bar staple. (Image: Tabasco sauce bottle. Credit: Getty)
There's a New DVC Lounge Coming to DisneylandDisney Vacation Club announced the first Member Lounge coming to Disneyland Resort in California and it is expected to open in the first half of 2023. The lounge will be located in Tomorrowland and be called “Disney Vacation Club Star View Station.” Located on the second floor of the Star Wars: Launch Bay building, the space-themed lounge will be home to a dedicated Disney Vacation Club Member Services team, plus lots of casual seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, device-charging stations and more.Similar to the DVC lounge at EPCOT, the Disneyland lounge will be available to eligible Disney Vacation Club Members with valid park tickets and reservations to Disneyland Park, space permitting. -- Is Disney Really Launching a Membership Program Like Amazon PrimeDisney is reportedly planning to launch a new membership program loosely modeled after Amazon Prime that would offer discounts and perks for combining streaming services, theme park visits, resort hotel stays, merchandise purchases and more. The Wall Street Journal reported on this, so there is some sense of reality behind it. The idea is that Disney would use the membership program to make it more attractive for guests and customers to increase spending on all its products and services. For Disney, it would give more consumer data as to your spending habits and more.So would this mean the retirement of programs like D23? How would DVC and Annual Pass perks stack up against this? --Foodie Guide to Halloween Sweets and Treats at Disneyland ResortHalloween season is on now at Disneyland Resort! We have been introduced to a Trinidad Sour and we're so happy about it. The time has come...this week we discuss Sara's all-time favorite film, Return of the King, as we talk about revolutionary visual and cinematic effects, the pristine story and depth of this film, what a movie going experience should be, and why we think the Academy has started to lose it's way in recent years. Directed by Peter Jackson, and starring literally everyone in Hollywood. Cheers! Trinidad Sour Recipe: 1.5 oz Angostura Bitters; 1 oz orgeat; 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice; .5 oz rye whiskey Shake all ingredients together with ice for 20 seconds; double strain into your Nick & Nora glass.
In today's historical shot join Avery as he briefly talks about and pays homage to everyone's favorite bitters, Angostura bitters. Cheers!Links:Reference Articlelinktr.ee/cocktail.time.machineEmail: kyle@thecocktailtimemachine.com

No matter where in the world you are, Angostura is the bitters on everyone's bar and in everyone's drink. Starting in 1824, the company originally produced their aromatic bitters to alleviate stomach ailments, but soon established their brand as an integral ingredient in the cocktail world.Based on their island home of Trinidad, the brand is not only known for its ability to move with the times, but also for their authenticity and craftsmanship. We talked to Mr Terrance Bharath, chairman of Angostura about sourcing local, the future of bitters, and of course, how their new cocoa bitters can be used in cocktails.

Not everyone has the foresight at a young age to know who British Philosopher Alan Watts is and also to heed his advice when planning their future. Well, our guest did and maybe that’s why he is the brand ambassador of one of the most profitable whiskies in the world. I’m Susan Schwartz, your drinking companion, and this is, Lush Life Podcast, every week we are inspired to live life one cocktail at a time by everyone in this industry. My guest, John Wayte, UK Brand Ambassador of Monkey Shoulder Premium Blended Whisky, may have studied Philosophy at university, but he wasn’t quite sure he would emerge as a philosopher. He spent more time organizing parties and ski trips for his fellow students than pouring over Plato. He did have the wherewithal to look at the future before him and deduce that serving alcohol linked everything he was doing. That led him straight into a career in the booze industry and he hasn’t looked back. Now with the enviable position of Brand Ambassador to the massively successful Monkey Shoulder, a whisky that prides itself on being as much fun as the whisky inside of it is fabulous, he is right where he dreamed he could be. The Cocktail of the Week is the Monkey Shoulder Lazy Old Fashioned! INGREDIENTS & METHOD Remove 100ml of Monkey from your bottle. Enjoy this spare whisky as you like… secret ingredient in an apple tart? Pour 90ml of sugar syrup back into the bottle. Add 30ml of Angostura Bitters back into the bottle. Label the bottle so you don’t get confused… Shake and store in the fridge, you’re ready to pour 12 Old Fashioneds over ice. Garnish them each with an orange zest. Run a bath, put your feet up and be lazy Finally save the empty bottles, in case you get stuck on a desert island For the Monkey Colada and its sister the Smokey Monkey Colada, you’ll have to head to alushlifemanual.com, where you can find this recipe, more whisky recipes, and all the cocktails of the week, plus links to where you'll find all the ingredients. -- Full Episode Details: https://alushlifemanual.com/how-to-follow-the-advice-of-a-modern-philosopher ----- Join the conversation on your IOS or Android at flick.group/lushlife where we can talk cocktails until the sun rises! Jen and Kim invite Master Distiller Alan Bishop from Spirits of French Lick Distillery in Indiana on the show. Alan shares some of his personal encounters of something hanging out on the family farm. What exactly this paranormal being is, is undetermined... We're talking Skinwalkers, maybe Bigfoot or maybe a spirit shape shifting from a different realm. What ever it is, it is highly intelligent and feeds off the fear of who ever it wants to play tricks on. It is completely unexplained and this story is the creepiest personal experience on the show to date. Also in this episode you will hear the background of Spirits of French Lick and a little about Alan himself all while the Boos & Bourbon ladies sip on Old Fashioned cocktails. The Old-Fashioned is one of the most iconic cocktails on the planet. Adored by Bourbon-lovers world-wide. Three simple ingredients - bourbon, sugar, and bitters, and a bit of fruit have wowed them since the 19th century. A billion variations have popped up especially in these cocktail-crazed times, but the true recipe is just perfection and hard to top. Today’s episode we see how the Old-Fashioned came to be, and that could only begin in one town - Louisville, Kentucky. I’m Susan Schwartz, your drinking companion, and this is the Lush Life Podcast, every week we are inspired to live life one cocktail at a time by the best in the industry. Today is the launch of my Lush Life cocktail collection. Remind everyone how simple it is to make an old-fashioned by wearing one of my Old-Fashioned t-shirts. Head to Alushlifemanual.com/merch to check this out! Remember that every penny goes to bring you more Lush Life! Back to the Old-Fashioned and its origins. As David Wondrich, the award-winning cocktail writer says, "Anyone who hooks his cart to any cocktail history is going to go off road!" I truly want to believe that the Old-Fashioned was invented at the Pendennis Club, so that’s where we are beginning. James Gerhardt, the General Manager of one of Louisville’s oldest private clubs and where the old-fashioned is purported to have been invented, is here to tell us his side of the story. Then we pop down to Whiskey Row and Old Forester’s new distillery to meet Holly McKnight to see how their bourbon fits into this jigsaw puzzle of Old-Fashioned History. After that we wander down whiskey row to the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience to let George Harrison explain how we wouldn’t even have bourbon if it weren’t for Evan Williams! For the pure enjoyment of this episode, I would skip ahead to our cocktail of the week and while stirring, double back to savor the story ahead. Our Cocktail of the Week is Pendennis Old-Fashioned Ingredients 2.5 ozs Bourbon (Old Forester 86 proof) Quarter size pour of Simple Syrup 2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters Method Put in a quarter size pour of simple syrup in the bottom of an Old-Fashioned glass Add two dashes Angostura bitters, orange wedge, maraschino cherry…. Muddle gently without smashing everything together. Pour 2.5 ozs bourbon (house is Old Forester 86 proof) on to the ingredients and add ice. Some bartenders have expressed a lemon over it and rubbed on rim, but that is overkill at this point. You’ll find this recipe and all the cocktails on ALushLifeManual.com, where you’ll also find all the ingredients in our shop. On this episode, while Adam is riding his migrant caravan back from the Immigration Detention Center on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Jeremy and Kurt sample the traditional Manhattan Cocktail. [caption id="" align="alignright" width="162"] Adam, via our sophisticated phone system.[/caption] To make this week's cocktail we used the following ingredients (slightly modified from the original): 2 oz. Hudson Baby Bourbon (New York State spirit) 1 oz. Gallo Sweet Vermouth 2 dashes Angostura Bitters 2 dashes Orange Bitters stir w/ ice Pour over chilled glass neat Garnish with Luxardo cherry. The Orange bitters are optional as are the cherry garnish. The drink can also be garnished with an orange peel or twist. Wikipedia actually has a pretty good page detailing the options and history of the Manhattan Cocktail. Interesting history and variations. In this week's top topic, Jeremy and Kurt discuss a new law and its unintended consequences. Maryland's new EXTREME protective order. Will it survive due process? Here is the link to the legislative history. In this week's "I Can't Believe It's Not Baltimore" 8,000 drug cases are dismissed because of misconduct in a Boston Crime lab. Read here for more. But wait, it did happen in Baltimore....read here for a story from way back in 2007 where potentially thousands of people were wrongfully convicted. In personal injury news, an Oregon horse lacks standing to sue his former neglectful owner. However, Kurt spends some time talking about how Maryland law treats animals like property. In other words if your dog is attacked and injured, you may recover certain items like vet bills but you will not be able to obtain pain and suffering for your dog's injuries. Finally, Donald Trump said in an interview that he can wipe away birthright citizenship with an executive order. Adam Crandell debunks that theory. Thanks to the hard work of our guest today, Pisco Waqar is a whole lot easier to find on the shelves in London than it was even three years ago. Javiera Lorenzini Raty, Brand Ambassador for Pisco Waqar, fell in love with Pisco and John Donne at about the same time. I don’t usually say that in a sentence that’s for sure. Her passion for English poets may have led her to London, but her studies as a sommelier led her to Waqar and she couldn’t pass up the chance to work with her favorite Pisco here in Europe. Our cocktail of the week is the Pisco Sour: Ingredients 3 Parts – WAQAR PISCO 1 Part – Fresh Lime Juice 1 Part – Gomme Syrup 1 Egg White 1 Drop of Angostura Bitters Method In shaker with 5 large ice cubes (not crushed ice), combine liquids adding egg whites last. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds. Strain into six ounce rocks glass (be careful not allow any ice to pour into the cocktail. Garnish: One drop Angostura Bitters and a dried lime or lemon on top. Heather and her friends created the ultimate Reuben sandwich and she is here to tell us all about her pastrami making journey and see if she can impart a little wisdom. We’ll also talk about how Liz’s Disney costumes turned out and whether or not Liz’s mom consents to being internet pickle famous. The Baconator (part deux) 1 tsp maple syrup 2 dashes Angostura Bitters 2 oz bacon bourbon (recipe below) 1 inch long piece of orange peel 2 maraschino cherries 1 piece maple candied bacon (recipe below) In an old-fashioned glass filled with ice, combine maple syrup, bitters, and bacon bourbon. Squeeze orange peel over glass and add. Stir until drink is cold. Add cherries and garnish with bacon. Bacon Bourbon 1/4 cup bacon fat, hot enough that it is liquid 750 mL bottle of bourbon Remove 1/4 cup bourbon from bottle and save for another day. Or drink it right now, I don't care. Pour bacon fat into bottle and put cap back on. Gently shake the bottle to combine. Allow the bourbon to sit out at room temperature for about four hours, shaking occasionally. You want to keep the fat from solidifying in a big clump too soon. Put the bottle in the fridge and chill for 3 - 7 days. Strain the bourbon through paper coffee filters and it's ready to drink! On Bartender Journey Podcast # 135 we talk with “Flavorist” Jamie Beurklian from Bar 40 Bitters.· The Bar 40 Bitters are very unique –they come in 4 varieties: Sweet, Salt, Sour and Umami (or "savory").· A few drops can really change the flavor of your cocktail. Jamie tells us how the Bar 40 Bitters were originally designed to “fix a problem” with a cocktail.· Bar40Bitters.com says their bitters are “based on the five gustatory taste receptors. Each flavor includes the compulsory bitter component and is paired with either sweet, sour, salty or umami (savory) flavor profiles”. This allows the cocktail creator to “chose the specific taste profile of their liking for their personalized cocktail creations”.· So we’ll make our cocktails of the week during the interview – we do a Manhattan & a Negroni (my 2 favorite cocktails btw!) We make the Manhattan first with Umami bitters and then add the Sour bitters.· Cocktails of the week, provided by Jamie Beruklian:Manhattan – Recipe #1:· 1oz rye· 1oz sweet vermouth· 0.5 pinch (6-8 drops) of Bar40 Umami· stir with ice to desired dilution.Notes:This recipe will give you an ultra smooth experience, the harshness or "burn" of the alcohol just goes away with the strong aromatics of the Umami. I A/B tested it with a standard Manhattan with Angostura. They are Apples and Oranges... Angostura Bitters adds spices notes, which I like, but can be slightly harsh. Bar40 Umami just smooths it right out. It is reminiscent of a hardy winter's meal. Very easy to drink. Manhattan – Recipe #2 (adding sour):· 1oz rye· 1oz sweet vermouth· 0.5 pinch (6-8 drops) of Bar40 Umami· 0.5 pinch (6-8 drops) of Bar40 Sour· stir with ice to desired dilution.· Orange peel twist for aromaticsNotes:· Garnishing with an orange peel is great. It adds a beautiful orange aroma to it, which is very bright in the nose and makes the drink very desirable. but it just doesn't get enough acid in the drink to brighten it up for the tongue. So if you or who you are serving to wants something more bright, poppy and complex, adding Bar40 Sour just makes it more lively as it reacts with the vermouth. It beings out a beautiful complexity to it. A thinking persons drink. Its easy to A/B the two recipes as you're building it and you can notice the difference yourself.Negroni – Recipe #1:· 1oz Gin· 1oz sweet vermouth· 0.5 - 1oz Campari· 12-16 drops Bar40 SaltNotes:· Negroni's are classically bitter cocktails. Campari is a wonderful spirit to my tongue. this cocktails bitter complexity makes for an excellent amuse bouche or aperitivo, kickstarting one’s tongue into gear for better tasting your meal. However, many people find the bitterness overpowering. I have had many people refuse a Negroni because they don't like the bitterness. I've realized most North American tongues aren't sensitized to bitterness on their palate. So to help this, adding Bar40 Salt to a Negroni will cut down bitterness of the Campari and let the citrus, grapefruit notes shine. it makes for a wonderful complex drink. Negroni – Recipe #1:· 1oz Gin· 1oz sweet vermouth· 0.5 - 1oz Campari· 12-16 drops Bar40 Salt· 6-8 drops Bar40 SweetNotes:In this cocktail, I made the Campari a variable. Because the Bar40 Salt will not totally kill ALL the bitterness in the drink (Bar40 Bitters still has bitter in them) yet you still want some bitterness which makes it a Negroni, so you can adjust the volume of Campari to the right level of taste based on your palate. However, Sweet perception is another taste that will help suppress bitterness. So to further add complexity to our drink, adding Bar40 Sweet will also help cut the Campari down. This opens up a bouquet of scents and tastes and makes for a truly complex and wonderful drink that wets your appetite and gets you in the mood to appreciate further food or cocktails. · Book of the week: Well, I was planning to make the book of the week 901 Very Good Cocktails - A Practical Guide, but much to my surprise, it is sold out and only available on Amazon used for $360.05 (plus $3.99 shipping)! We have a short interview with the author Stew Ellington recorded at Tales Of The Cocktail 2014. The book is also available as an app for iOS for $3.99.· Toast of the week:A toast is a boast or other compostTo a guest or the host or one we love most;To a wink or or a girl that is pretty in pink --Or any old thing, only for a chance to drink.
The East India Cocktail was first noted by Harry Johnson who claimed in his book in 1882 that this was a popular drink in among the British in India. It was hard to find any truth behind this, but it certainly sounds imperialistic. As we dive into East India Cocktail we discuss the long European colonial presence in the East, corporate interests evolving into national interests, as well as mutinies and rebellions. Come join us as we explore why this brandy-based cocktail might have been popular in India, some weird Canadian temperance poetry and the disgusting possibility of maraschino olives. Ewww. (Trademark maraschino olives.) The cocktail ingredients are as follows: 3 oz – brandy 1/2 oz – raspberry syrup 1 dash – Angostura Bitters 1 teaspoon – orange curacao 1 teaspoon – maraschino liqueur
Cuban Old Fashioned Contributed by Eddie Fuentes • 2 dashes of Orange Bitters • 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters • ½ oz of Bustelo Coffee Syrup • 2 oz Bulleit® Bourbon Add all ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice, stir, strain over a hand carved ice, squeeze an orange peel and coil it up for the garnish.
Episode #44 features a popular personality from the cocktail era: Mr. PT Barnum. The name of the cocktail refers to Barnum's supposed famous saying that a "sucker is born every minute." But even as we look into this cocktail we can't verify much of anything and even the attribution of that phrase seems off. Given that Barnum was a temperance speaker from 1850 to his death, an attribution from him directly seems unlikely. We doubt he was making cocktails or ordering cocktails for himself or anyone else. Strangely enough, Jerry Thomas, the bartender who first published his recipes in 1862, owned a saloon beneath Barnum's American Museum on Broadway in New York and it seems that they did in fact know each other, but Thomas doesn't have the cocktail in his book which seems unlikely if he was the original creator. The first place Jay does find the Barnum Was Right Cocktail is in Trader Vic's cocktail book, published much later than would be expected from a cocktail bearing Barnum's name. Because of its nonexistence, even by mention, prior, Jay considers Vic Bergeron as the creator of this cocktail. Now lack of evidence isn't proof of what is actually the case...if anyone knows the origin story to this cocktail better and can point to evidence, we'd love to know it and amend the discussion. Getting into the conversation of the name of the drink, it appears even that is up for debate. There is no place where we can find "a sucker is born every minute" as being spoken by PT Barnum. In fact, many people suggest that Barnum's big top competitors at the time told people Barnum said it to discredit him. But even if that were the case or Barnum had said it, the concept goes much further back historically, so it's not an original idea, having Barnum say it just made it sound better, as was the case with everything he did. Here’s the recipe: 2 Ounces gin 1 Ounce apricot-flavored brandy 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice 2 dashes Angostura Bitters This cocktail was more or less fine. It didn't offend, it didn't impress. It merely existed. We all had it and we enjoyed it for what it was, but it comes from the classic style of gin, bitters, and one other ingredient that sets it apart from a Tom Collins or many other drinks we've had. It was excellent to try, but for my money, the story here was the best part.
For a pink drink that is nothing more than a glass of gin with Angostura bitters, Pink Gin wins the award for being the simplest cocktail with the most obvious name. With so few ingredients, it can’t be that strong though, right? Don’t let the color fool you, it is nothing more than a glass of gin with a few more dashes of booze. For flavor. Pink Gin is commonly known as a tradition of British Royal Navy officers, but did it actually start there? Join us this episode as we explore this drink’s place in Navy life, the use of gin and bitters as medicine, and the history of the one of the most famous cocktail ingredients, Angostura Bitters. The recipe is: 3 ounces of gin 6 dashes of Angostura bitters
The Singapore Sling has a bit of a tricky history to piece out. Most recipes nowadays have pineapple juice, and attribute the Singapore Sling recipe to the Raffles Hotel in 1915. While some evidence points in that general direction, it is hard to confirm. What muddies the waters is changing ingredients from reference to reference, bouncing between simple gin sling-based recipes to something that resembles a tropical drink. For additional confusion, sometimes it is a Singapore Sling, sometimes a Singapore Gin Sling, sometimes a Straits Sling. And just for fun the ingredients for a Singapore Sling in one book may be the same as the ingredients as a Straits Sling in another, with a Singapore Sling right alongside, of course with different ingredients. In this episode we try to sort out the Singapore Sling story and how it got to be such a recognizable cocktail. We take a look at the origins of gin slings, Western influences that might have brought it to Southeast Asia, and British colonial rule a long way from the U.K. The recipe is: 2 ounces gin ¾ ounces Cherry Heering 2 teaspoons Benedictine 2 teaspoons Cointreau 2 ounces pineapple juice ¾ ounce fresh lime juice 2 dashes grenadine 1 dash Angostura Bitters Soda water
Bitters have been an ingredient in cocktails since the birth of the art form. Some would say that a cocktail is not truly a cocktail without bitters. Even so, it is rare to find a cocktail that utilizes more than a dash or two. Not so with the Aromatic Collins. A lover of bitters, Jamie Boudreau uses an entire ounce of Angostura Bitters in this creation.
In this second episode on how to layer a cocktail, Jamie demonstrates the Bitter Bike. With a heavy amount of Angostura Bitters, this drink is an unusually delicious way to end the evening.
