It's Thanksgiving week, so I'm counting my blessings, and my 12 children are right up there at the top of the list. Another thing I'm grateful for? The fact my husband didn't cut my childbearing years short by getting a vasectomy, though he definitely considered it at one point. Listen to this week's episode to hear why, and to learn what stopped him from going through with it. Show Notes: VERSES CITED: - Colossians 1:16-17 - "...all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." - Hebrews 1:3 - "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word." - Revelation 4:11 - “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” - 1 Corinthians 8:6 - "...there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through Whom all things came and through Whom we live." The opening section of Parashat Hukat introduces and discusses the Misva of Para Aduma, a special cow which was required for the process of purifying people or utensils who had become Tameh (impure) through contact with a human corpse. The cow would be burned, and its ashes would be mixed with water. This water would be sprinkled on people and objects that had become impure, and they would then become pure once again. Surprisingly, the Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 685:7) brings a view (which appears first in Tosafot in Masechet Berachot 13a) that the annual reading of this section constitutes a Torah obligation. We read this section each year not only this Shabbat as part of the yearly Torah reading cycle, but also on a special Shabbat in between Purim and Pesach, which we call “Shabbat Para.” According to this view cited by the Shulhan Aruch, reading this Parasha each year is required on the level of Torah law, as opposed to virtually all other Torah readings, which are required Mi'de'rabbanan (by force of the Rabbis' enactment). The question naturally arises as to the source and reason of this requirement. There is no Biblical obligation to read about other Misvot. Why – and where – does the Torah require reading about the Para Aduma? Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky (1891-1986), in his Emet La'Yaakov (Parashat Ekeb) answers that the source of this obligation is a verse in Parashat Ekeb (Debarim 9:7), where the Torah commands us to remember “how you angered Hashem your G-d in the wilderness.” The Malbim (Rav Meir Leibush Weiser, 1809-1879), in his work Arsot Ha'haim, claims that this refers to the sin of the golden calf, but Rav Kamenetsky disagrees, noting that the golden calf is mentioned separately in the next verse (“U'b'Horeb Hiksaftem Et Hashem”). Therefore, Rav Kamenetsky suggests that this command refers to the events that transpired in Mara, shortly after Beneh Yisrael crossed the sea. As we read in Parashat Beshalah (Shemot 15:22-26), Beneh Yisrael found themselves without water until finally arriving in Mara, where they encountered a body of water, but the water was bitter and foul-tasting. They angrily complained to Moshe, demanding water. G-d responded by commanding Moshe to cast a piece of wood into the water, whereupon it miraculously transformed into sweet drinking water. After this miracle, G-d had Moshe present to the people “Hok U'mishpat,” which Rashi explains as referring to several Misvot, including the Misva of Para Aduma. Thus, Rav Kamenetsky writes, by reading the Misva of Para Aduma, which was first presented at Mara, we fulfill the Biblical command to remember Beneh Yisrael's angry complaints at Mara, where they challenged Moshe rather than placing their trust in Hashem. Rav Kamenetsky explains further the connection between the Para Aduma and Beneh Yisrael's sin at Mara. The Para Aduma shows that by following Hashem's rules, an impure person can be transformed, and regain his purity. We do not and cannot understand how sprinkling the Para Aduma waters brings a person purity, but Hashem said that this is how purity is regained. Likewise, at Mara, Hashem determined that a piece of wood should transform bitter water into sweet water. According to natural law, there is no reason whatsoever for why this should happen. Wood does not change foul-tasting water into fresh drinking water. But Hashem has he power to change any “bitter” situation into “sweetness,” in ways which we can never expect or understand. This was the people's mistake at Mara – failing to recognize that the bitter water can be made sweet. The Torah commands us to remember this incident in order that we strengthen our Emuna, our faith in G-d's unlimited ability to “sweeten” any form of “bitterness,” so that instead of complaining and bemoaning our circumstances, like our ancestors did in Mara, we turn to Hashem and ask for help. We fulfill this Misva through the reading of Parashat Para, which reminds us that Hashem can bring purity to the impure in ways which we do not understand. Just as an impure person can regain his purity through the mysterious process of the Para Aduma waters, so can any “bitter” situation be transformed to “sweetness” through G-d's unlimited power and capabilities.

The Shomer Emunim writes in his Ma'amar Hashgacha Pratit , ( perek 14) words that every single person should take to heart and live by on a daily basis. We need to repeat them over and over until they become a part of our very essence. He writes, whenever a person experiences any type of discomfort or pain, even the slightest amount, his immediate reaction should be to believe that it came about b'hashgacha pratit . And he should make the following declaration: I believe b'emunah shelema , this affliction came only because Hashem wanted it. I accept it with love and I recognize that it came because of the many sins that I do. Hashem is completely righteous in giving this to me because I deserve it. May it be the will of Hashem that this affliction be an atonement for the many sins that I have done. I know that I should be really specifying the exact averot which caused this yisurin to come about, and make teshuva for them, but You know, Hashem, that I have no way of knowing that, and therefore, please let this suffering erase the sins that caused it and sweeten the judgments that are upon me and all of Israel. And turn everything into revealed good and bring an abundance of chesed to me and all of Klal Yisrael forever and ever. If a person will do this and mention at least the main points here, he will fulfill no less than five different mitzvot: 1. Believing in Hashem's hashgacha 2. Justifying what Hashem is doing to him, like it says in the pasuk כאשר ייסר איש את בנו כן ה' אלוקיך מייסרך– Hashem chastises us like a father to a son for the son's own good. 3. Repentance by admitting that our sins have caused the affliction. 4. Trying to bring about mercy for the Jewish People at large, which is under the mitzvah והלכת בדרכיו – emulating Hashem 5. A mitzvah from the words of Tehillim – חסד ומשפט אשירה – which Chazal explain to mean, if a person receives open good from Hashem he is supposed to sing to Him, and if he receives what appears to be affliction, he is also supposed to sing and accept as well, happily, what Hashem is doing to him. And if he also feels bad that when he is experiencing pain, the Shechina is in pain, and that bothers him, he will fulfill a 6 th mitzvah – אם אשכחך ירושלים תשכח ימיני – which is a mitzvah not to forget about the pain of the Shechina in our exile. The Rabbi adds, we know when a person does experience yisurin , it's a calling for him to make introspection and fix something, but who actually knows what exactly is the cause of his yisurin ? If we say this formula, the Shomer Emunim tells us it will accomplish the introspection that we are meant to do. The Shomer Emunim continues, a person should memorize these points and say them every time he experiences any type of difficulty. This will sweeten all the judgments that he has upon him and change everything into revealed good. This will enable him to get the full kapara for all of his sins, especially if he is accustomed to doing this for even the smallest afflictions. This avoda will bring endless satisfaction to HaKadosh Baruch Hu and joy to all the Upper Worlds. It is the way of Hashem to test people in the area of emunah. And this response will give the person 100% credit on the test. And if, chas v'shalom , there were more decrees that were destined for the person, this response will remove the need for those decrees to be fulfilled. If someone feels like he is going through hardship after hardship, and is looking for a way to improve his situation, the Shomer Emunim is teaching us one of the ways that he could accomplish that. We must remember to do it with happiness and praise and thank Hashem for everything He does.

It's no secret that chocolate is decadent and delicious. But while the added sugars and artificial sweeteners may give us an initial boost of energy, they leave us feeling lethargic and bloated. For consumers who take extra caution when it comes to their nutrition, it seems like there's no such thing as a healthy or clean chocolate bar that actually tastes good. Adam Kukoff, Co-Founder and CEO of NUTSÓLA, set out on a mission to create food products that are both tasty and nutritional. He co-founded NUTSÓLA with his father after launching a Kickstarter campaign in 2019. They recently expanded their selection to include DÄT Chocolate bars, which are naturally sweetened with dates instead of artificial ingredients. Sweetening the product with dates provides a boost of fiber, antioxidants, and no sugar crashes. In this episode, Adam talks to Jen about why DÄT Chocolate differs from other sweets on the shelf, NUTSÓLA's commitment to clean ingredients, transparency, and innovation, and why DÄT Chocolate gives you more energy than other chocolate bars. This week on Hormonally Speaking, we have Abby Epstein, the acclaimed American film director and producer best known for her work on the documentaries "The Business of Being Born" "Until the Violence Stops,” and “Weed The People.” Epstein has won several awards for her documentaries, including the Audience Awards at Vancouver's Amnesty International Film Festival and Nashville Film Festival, as well as premiering at Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW festivals. We discuss her and her business partner Ricki Lake's latest movie, “The Business of Birth Control”, which aims to shed light on the effects of hormonal contraceptives and the need for newer and better options. The documentary was inspired by the book "Sweetening the Pill" by Holly Grigg-Spall. We Cover So Much Including: ✨How the film was not made to promote a specific ideology, despite what some people think ✨That it was difficult to find experts in the field who would speak out against the status quo (but they still found some amazing ones!) ✨The fact that modern medicine has often failed women, leading to poor menstrual health, low body literacy, and high rates of endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, anxiety, and depression ✨Why there is a need to evolve and develop solutions regarding women's health and bodies, especially in terms of contraception and long-term effects of medications ✨And so much more good stuff! Our conversation was powerful, and one you don't want to miss, especially if you are currently on birth control, or have children that are. You'll also want to see the movie ASAP - especially since March 8 is International Women's Day - which you can stream here. Use code “HORMONALLYSPEAKING” at check out to get half off. ABBY EPSTEIN made her film directing debut at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival with the documentary, V-Day: Until the Violence Stops, featuring Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, and Rosie Perez. The film won the Audience Award at Vancouver's Amnesty International Film Festival and premiered on Lifetime Television, receiving both an Emmy and a Gracie Allen Award. In 2007, she teamed up with Ricki Lake for their widely acclaimed documentary, The Business of Being Born, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released by New Line Cinema/Netflix and broadcast on Showtime. The film's success led to their follow-up series, More Business of Being Born, featuring Cindy Crawford, Alanis Morissette, Gisele Bündchen and Christy Turlington plus a book, Your Best Birth, published by Hachette. Next, the duo teamed up for Weed the People, which premiered at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the Nashville Film Festival. Weed the People was acquired by Netflix for distribution. Under their company, BOBB Films, Ms. Epstein and Ms. Lake produced the documentaries Breastmilk and The Mama Sherpas and are currently in production on The Business of Birth Control. Prior to her film work, Ms. Epstein directed Broadway theater, helming national tours and international productions of RENT and The Vagina Monologues.
