This was Hayden Croft's fourth appearance on this podcast because it represents his fourth film that has screened at either Film Invasion Los Angeles or Sherman Oaks Film Festival. In March 2018, he came by with actor/producer Jay Eftimoski to discuss their film “New Age, Olde English” which screened at SOFF 2016. In July 2021, he came by to discuss “Last Wish” which screened at FILA 2018. In September 2021, he came by to discuss “Four Junkies” which screened at SOFF 2019. And today he came in to discuss… The short film “Tax Time” that screened at FILA 2023 and, almost more importantly, his self-published short story anthology “Kisses from Strangers in the Dark” that he gave me in 2018, and his currently unpublished novel “Sand Ramsey is a Dick” aka “Oh No, NoHo” aka “No Way, NoHo.” We had a LOT to talk about! You can learn more about Hayden and his work at haydenlcroft.com and, to get a little high art on y'all, below is the poem Hayden recited on this podcast! “Combustible Criteria” By Hayden Croft Contending with the coarseness, current culture calls “connection,” Confers a change - of course - on once conventional conceptions. Collective condescension can oft condemn the callous, And the cover-up contenders, who conceal their constant malice. They concoct a coalition of compelling conversations, To consort with the contentious, and contort all condemnations. Coercion is a construct used to codify contrivance, And by condoning corporate conduct, one corroborates connivance. Crude, continual conjecture on the concept that is class, Is both critical, and cynical, and caters to the crass. In conscripting crowds to conquest, your charm must be contagious, Your commands be uncontested; your charisma be courageous. To capture the chaotic, then condemn it to confinement. The combative must be concrete; any comfort's by consignment. The conditions of convection are conveyed through circulation, And constricting coalescence, can't constrain the conflagration. Contained within this charter, is the credible collusion, Of contro-versy contagions, meant to counteract confusion. Wilderness, a word derived from the Olde English term 'wildēorness' meaning association with wild places. Wild meaning untamed or uncultivated. I am intrigued by the 'un' prefix which seems to indicate the natural state is somehow deficient because man has not brought it under his dominion, a controlling mindset cultivated by those who profess allegiance to profit at all costs. Dēor refers to beasts --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/david-olson6/support

So often it seems the more you do, the harder it is to keep your head above water. You tell yourself you just need to get through this task. This morning. This day. Phrases like, “It can wait until tomorrow,” “I don't need to ask for help,” and “I got this,” fire up your sense of determination. But all they're really doing is forcing you to burn your candle at both ends, and this leads to, you guessed it, burnout. We are learning that a key to remedying this kind of overwhelmingness isn't so much about asking others for help, it's about connecting with them (and yourself) to hold you accountable. Accountability is all about taking responsibility for your actions. And responsibility isn't something you have to handle all by yourself. Join us for this episode of A Couple Takes on MS Podcast where we open up about the challenges we face when we don't involve someone or something to hold us accountable. This includes everything from a sleep study that is pushing us to actually get to bed before 1 a.m. or Stella, the 1-year-old Olde English bulldog who made us realize that we aren't the prime candidates for being puppy parents... right now. We're delving into Disney's Dark Period in the late 70s/early 80s in this childhood nostalgia episode on none other than the cult curiosity The Watcher in the Woods. Directed by John "Legend of Hell House" Hough and featuring Bette Davis in scowling hag mode, this tale of an American family experiencing spooky goings on in an Olde English house is surprisingly effective and perfect gateway horror for 80s kids. But it was also a troubled production, featuring on-set battles, a dramatic rethink after its premiere and reshoots to 'fix' the ending, as the House of Mouse struggled to come to terms with making PG-rated material. Does the end result stand the test of time for Conrad and does it work for newcomers like Dan? Find out! NOTE: This is an updated replay of my amazing chat with Emma Straub, the New York Times-bestselling author of six books for adults, including her novel This Time Tomorrow … She is also the author of three picture books, the first of which, Very Good Hats, was published in January 2023. Congrats Emma! Enjoy … New York Times bestselling author, Emma Straub, spoke to me about why everything in life is timing, how to write a book for yourself, time travel, and her latest This Time Tomorrow. Emma is the bestselling author of six novels — including All Adults Here, The Vacationers, Modern Lovers, and Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures — the short story collection Other People We Married. Her books have been published in 20 countries. Her latest, This Time Tomorrow, has been named One of the Most Anticipated Books of 2022 by Vogue, Oprah, Entertainment Weekly, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, Reader's Digest, Today, Parade, Thrillist, Pop Sugar, Lithub and more. Described as "...a moving father-daughter story and a playful twist on the idea of time travel," author Michael Chabon called the book "...a beautifully made, elegant music box of a novel that sets in motion its clever clockwork of delight—then breaks your heart with its bittersweet, lingering song.” Emma and her husband also own Books Are Magic, a popular independent bookstore in Brooklyn, New York. In this file Emma Straub and I discussed: Why getting an MFA helped her slow down her writing How she met everyone in publishing at an indie bookshop The unique perspective of Xennials How to find confidence and pages while being off-balance Why she'd drink less Olde English if she could go back And a lot more! Read by Gary Muller"A Bird in Bishopswood" is a short, 41-line poem written in Middle English alliterative verse in the late fourteenth century. The poem was written in 1395 by English poet John Tickhill, who was a rent collector at St. Paul's Cathedral. The poem is about a narrator who finds himself out of tune with the season of "the merry month of May". The narrator has spent Lent in melancholia and also shares their observations and interpretations of the bird's actions, the changing nature and how it makes them feel. Also, there is an expression of longing towards the bird, expressed through a desire to keep it caged until winter, a possible metaphor for wanting to hold onto the beauty and vitality of spring as long as possible.

While many of us think of language as something that evolved from the grunts and noises made by our prehistoric ancestors, Sanskrit, the ancient language of the Veda, has a very unique distinction; it's an ‘inspired' or cognized language, reflecting the intention of Nature through sound.Having obtained a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney, majoring in Sanskrit, Thom is well placed to give us an overview of its origin and a demonstration of its beauty. He explains how its custodians have preserved its integrity over the centuries, protecting it from the inevitable change of common use.And for those of us who don't want to dive deeply into understanding it more fully, he explains why we don't need to understand Sanskrit intellectually in order to benefit from its meaning or intent.Episode Highlights:[00:45] The First Child of the Language of Nature[02:45] Rishi - One with Super Subtle Perception[04:28] Sounds Like...[06:35] Seeing the Sounds[08:38] Lingua Franca[10:29] An Absolute Language[11:32] Fluid Languages[12:32] Olde English[14:19] An Effect Without Understanding[17:00] The Means Alone Won't Get You There[18:25] A Lifetime of Learning Isn't Enough[19:28] Sama Veda - Enlivening Our Experience of the Unified Field[21:23] Puja[23:32] A Beautiful Sound On Its OwnUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/
Wrapping up Season 1 with this handy guide to all that useful shit we talk about with every play. We'll cover everything from "what is a comedy" to Line Ending Blueprints. Here's a taste, but for the FULL SUPER-DEE-DUPER TEXT go to our website!! We'll even make it downloadable, you lucky f*ckers!! 1) in a tragedy there are lots of dead bodies on stage at the end. In a comedy at least one couple gets married. In a "problem play" there are bits of both, which is problematic... 2) Iambic pentameter is just a rhythm (METER) with five (PENT) double beats (IAMBS, or "I am!"s) 3) Only 5% of the words contained in all of Shakespeare's plays are words we don't use anymore, so quit moaning about having to learn Olde English. 4) Verse is when a line is written in rhythm (see Iambic Pentameter). There is also Prose, which is more like regular speaking. When a character who usually speaks in verse suddenly starts speaking in prose, LISTEN UP cuz he's deranged... or sick, or lying... All of these and more are fleshed out on the website: www.fckshakespeare.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fckshakespeare/support

#PodcastersForJustice New York Times bestselling author, Emma Straub, spoke to me about why everything in life is timing, how to write a book for yourself, time travel, and her latest "This Time Tomorrow." Emma is the bestselling author of five novels — including All Adults Here, The Vacationers, Modern Lovers, and Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures — the short story collection Other People We Married.
