Keeping Arts Alive in an Expensive City During a Persistent Pandemic

The city's arts industry is returning to some semblance of normalcy. During a live Civic Cocktail event, four leaders survey the damage done and chart a path forward. In the spring of 2020, many artists and arts organizations were already struggling to maintain a place for themselves in Seattle. The future of creative expression in the city was uncertain, but the challenges were well-defined. Then the pandemic hit and scrambled everything. Audiences shifted to experiencing their arts and entertainment through screens as artists pivoted to a new digital reality. Many arts organizations, meanwhile, had to rely on philanthropy, government assistance and their own creativity to survive.  Now, as a vaccinated and exhausted world presses on through year three of the pandemic, the arts are in the midst of a slow return to venues across the city. But the world that artists and arts organizations are encountering is very different from the one they faced when the arts shut down two years ago.  For this episode of the Civic Cocktail podcast, we speak with four community arts leaders – Arté Noir founder and president Vivian Philips, Museum of Museums founder and director Greg Lundgren, Artist Home founder and owner Kevin Sur, and Northwest Folklife managing director Reese Tanimura – about the state of the arts now. They share their experiences leading organizations and businesses through the pandemic, outline new challenges of this late-pandemic era and offer prescriptions to keep the arts alive in Seattle.  This conversation was recorded on July 13, 2022. Civic Cocktail is a production of Seattle City Club and Crosscut. Question The Answers

I am thrilled to have my long time friend Kevin Sur as the featured guest this week. Kevin and I go back well over 20 years as friends, and he has always been someone that I could count on to give me sound advice about the music business, and guidance about what to do with the bands I was in. Kevin Sur, affectionally known for many years among his musical peers as "Bubba", was a member of the beloved Sacramento punk outfit Luckie Strike. He cut his teeth in that band over the course of 7 years, where they were true road dogs, touring constantly, and doing everything they could in a pre-internet world to stay in constant contact with their fans. After Luckie Strike called it a day, Kevin ventured to Seattle to focus on school, but eventually found his way back to the Bay Area (his hometown area), and started a new project called Indian Valley Line with two longtime friends. A far cry from the pop-punk of his former band, Indian Valley Line blended roots-Americana, indie-folk which paired well with Kevin's newly found skills as a composer. Heading back to Seattle, Kevin turned his sights to music promotion, starting Artist Home. Artist Home focuses mostly on their annual music festivals these days, but they also serve as a professional consultancy for artists that are trying to grow their careers. Kevin is definitely the right kind of person you'd want on your team for this, I know from experience. To hear Luckie Strike - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-MCH...
