Kauwila & Inalihi - "Pae ʻĀina to Palestine" from the 2023 album Rise Up: BDS Mixtape vol. 2 on Amplify Palestine This week's Song of the Day picks were chosen by DJs Miss Ashley, Kevin Sur, Tory, and Isabel Khalili in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. From Hawai'i to Sudan, these songs represent the global solidarity movement in support of Palestinians and anti-colonialism. The BDS Mixtape series that features three of this week's songs was inspired by the 1985 Sun City album by artists boycotting apartheid South Africa. To learn more about the music and its connection to the cause, visit Majazz Project and Amplify Palestine. Honolulu-based duo Kauwila & Inalihi note the connection between Hawaii and Palestine on today's Song of the Day.  As Kauwila writes on Instagram, "Unearthing our storied solidarities that are nearly two centuries old is a a path towards rejecting western-centric forms of governance as a norm. Those tired models only reproduce the violences of colonization, genocide, patriarchy, capitalism, religious oppression, and state violence to privilege the corporations, militaries, banks of the rich. When we center aloha aina, deep love for the land, we will remember these deep connections between Hawaii and Palestine: We are two occupied nations struggling for liberation, we are too in love with our land and our nation!" Written in the midst of the 2019 Sudanese revolution, today's Song of the Day is a tribute from Alsarah & the Nubatones to the youth resistance in her birthplace of Sudan. "This song was a call from the diaspora to home," she explains on Bandcamp. "In this song I hope to define myself through the joys of memories past, and those coming up. A song to plan for the joy you wish to have and focus the mind on the essence of who you wish to be so that future may happen." The accompanying music video was directed by Mai Elgizouli, whose aim was to show support for survivors with this clip. She shares, “As I listened to many stories from various young people who felt survivor's guilt after the traumatic events of the massacre I began to think more about the subject of mental health and the importance of Art and Music, especially during a time like this, in allowing us to come to terms with who we are and realize the importance of our emotional healing.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The city's arts industry is returning to some semblance of normalcy. During a live Civic Cocktail event, four leaders survey the damage done and chart a path forward. In the spring of 2020, many artists and arts organizations were already struggling to maintain a place for themselves in Seattle. The future of creative expression in the city was uncertain, but the challenges were well-defined. Then the pandemic hit and scrambled everything. Audiences shifted to experiencing their arts and entertainment through screens as artists pivoted to a new digital reality. Many arts organizations, meanwhile, had to rely on philanthropy, government assistance and their own creativity to survive.  Now, as a vaccinated and exhausted world presses on through year three of the pandemic, the arts are in the midst of a slow return to venues across the city. But the world that artists and arts organizations are encountering is very different from the one they faced when the arts shut down two years ago.  For this episode of the Civic Cocktail podcast, we speak with four community arts leaders – Arté Noir founder and president Vivian Philips, Museum of Museums founder and director Greg Lundgren, Artist Home founder and owner Kevin Sur, and Northwest Folklife managing director Reese Tanimura – about the state of the arts now. They share their experiences leading organizations and businesses through the pandemic, outline new challenges of this late-pandemic era and offer prescriptions to keep the arts alive in Seattle.  This conversation was recorded on July 13, 2022. I am thrilled to have my long time friend Kevin Sur as the featured guest this week. Kevin and I go back well over 20 years as friends, and he has always been someone that I could count on to give me sound advice about the music business, and guidance about what to do with the bands I was in. Kevin Sur, affectionally known for many years among his musical peers as "Bubba", was a member of the beloved Sacramento punk outfit Luckie Strike. He cut his teeth in that band over the course of 7 years, where they were true road dogs, touring constantly, and doing everything they could in a pre-internet world to stay in constant contact with their fans. After Luckie Strike called it a day, Kevin ventured to Seattle to focus on school, but eventually found his way back to the Bay Area (his hometown area), and started a new project called Indian Valley Line with two longtime friends. A far cry from the pop-punk of his former band, Indian Valley Line blended roots-Americana, indie-folk which paired well with Kevin's newly found skills as a composer. Heading back to Seattle, Kevin turned his sights to music promotion, starting Artist Home. Artist Home focuses mostly on their annual music festivals these days, but they also serve as a professional consultancy for artists that are trying to grow their careers. Kevin is definitely the right kind of person you'd want on your team for this, I know from experience. To hear Luckie Strike - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-MCH... "Kurt Cobain had actually referred to The Dutchman as ‘the grungiest place in Seattle.'" That's from Gary Mula, former owner of the storied Duchman recording studio, an artsy warehouse recording/rehearsal facility where Gary lived and made records until 2009, when it burned to the ground. We talk about the way music changed his life and how he developed his skill as a producer by learning when to push his ideas and when to sit back and just be wallpaper. "The reason I decided to call myself a producer was I couldn't just keep my mouth shut. And it wasn't good for me to keep my mouth shut. I wasn't honoring the artist or the music if I was....Sometimes with bands, everything's flowing and there's no conflict. And other times you have to fight for an idea." I exhibit some of Gary's favorite artists like Sun Crow, Chris Orlowski, and Kevin Sur and Andrew Jocylyn; We go down a couple of musical rabbit holes talking about Tov Lo, Scientist, Wo Fat, and Courtney Marie Andrews; And I pick Gary's brain about the best mic for vocals.
