In Hour 2, Lubman and Chickering ponder the idea of the substation next to Levi's Stadium, and if there's any effect on player injuries
As Super Bowl LX rolls into Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium, Jake Rockatansky and Travis View are joined by sports writer Arif Hasan (Wide Left newsletter) to dig into one of the NFL's strangest modern fan obsessions: the idea that the San Francisco 49ers are cursed by an electrical substation. Over the last decade the Niners have become infamous for suffering from brutal, momentum-killing injuries. This has fueled endless theories about potential reasons for the medical incidents that are causing heartburn among football fans in the Bay Area. Is it turf, training, recruiting strategy, bad luck, or something else? One rumor has dominated the online discourse: the idea that the Northern Receiving Station, right next to where the pro athletes train and play, is bathing players in “EMF” and making them more injury-prone. We trace how the theory travelled from locker room chatter, to online content creators, to a “board-certified quantum biology practitioner” until it finally had to be addressed by the 49ers administration and NFL's chief medical officer. This is despite the fact that the idea doesn't have any empirical support and it doesn't even make sense upon examination of the timeline of the substation. In this episode of Powerline Podcast, I sit down with Juan Huerta and Beau Tubbs from Arizona Public Service for a deep dive into the world of substation work—one of the most critical, high-risk, and least understood parts of the power system. We unpack what a real day in the life of a substation electrician looks like, why precision matters when the margin for error is slim, and how trust, communication, and accountability show up differently inside a substation than out on the line. This conversation goes beyond job titles and into the weight of responsibility that comes with working where everything connects.Juan and Beau also share hard-earned lessons on collaboration between crafts, “failing safely,” teaching complex systems to apprentices, and creating environments where crews feel comfortable speaking up when something doesn't feel right. We also talk candidly about stress, mental health, and what it takes to stay sharp—both on the job and at home.

The gang breaks down the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti during a Minneapolis protest against ICE, as federal officials quietly change their public posture amid growing backlash. With video evidence contradicting early claims and questions mounting about the agents' actions, they ask what the most important unanswered piece of the story really is. Then they turn to the so called “substation theory,” as Super Bowl bound teams avoid the 49ers' training facility over concerns that a nearby electrical substation may be linked to unusually high injury rates. Is there anything to the theory, or is this just another case of pattern seeking in sports?Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:10:45 - Minnesota ICE Shooting00:52:44 - Substation Theory01:11:55 - Emails01:33:22 - Wrap-up Hosted on Acast. "I heard the electronic hum of the substation and the chat from people near it. I supported the recording with a warm drone and proceeded to extract the harmonics and frequencies from the hum and chatter with the MakeNoise Tape and Microsound Music Machine. The improvisations were then edited. A copy was treated with postproduction effects, and both were then mixed together using my Agricultural Terrains strategy." Yanchep substation reimagined by Alan Cook.
This recording is taken with an Open Wave-Receiver, a custom made foxhole radio modded from a Shortwave Collective design. The aerial was strung up to the barbed wire fence around Yanchep Substation; the electromagnetic pulse capturing an invisible soundscape, this community's lifeline to the power grid. Recorded in Perth, Australia by Aliesha King.
