Another fantastic guest artist interview for you in episode 14 of Alt. Down Under... This time out, it's the unreal Girl and Girl. Speaking with Luke is frontman Kai James and drummer, Aunt Liss. They've just caught a breath after an 8-date whistle-stop tour around Australia, bringing the energy to cities up and down the country. It's not every day an aunt ends up being the drummer for her nephew's band - you can hear how the hell that happened, how they operate as a family unit and the pride they feel in each other's contributions to the magic that is Girl and Girl. Kai opens up on using "theatric" elements in the band's debut album Call a Doctor as a means of opening up on his personal battles with mental health, the "beast" that is his vocal range and....all eyes on America! What it means to be heading Stateside and flying the flag for Australian music, whilst supporting Naked Giants. AND....their Dream Gig Venue. The corpse of David Bowie playing at The Armpit? Sure, why not.

The hill figures of southern England are enigmatic artworks, standing out with their stark white lines against the green grass of their home slopes. They're mostly found on chalk hills, where the chalk provides the white outlines. Countless figures have been lost. Yet four in particular remain famous even now, while a fifth is famous precisely since it no longer exists. Folklore naturally accrues to these figures as people seek to explain their presence in the landscape. Let's find out what kind of folklore is attached to these hill figures in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore. Fight Milk - ICU from the 2022 self-released Fight Milk EP. Fight Milk is the project of Redmond, Washington-based project of Jackson Leavitt, who has been releasing singles and EPs since 2019 under the name. Influenced highly by campy ‘80's new wave bands like Devo, Fight Milk's shows are a multi-disciplinary audiovisual experience made to entertain. Our Song of the Day, “ICU,” comes off of 2022's self-titled EP and is a high-energy bop led by tapping synth rhythms and a scorching guitar melody, with Leavitt fusing very real and vulnerable feelings of longing with silly voices and lines that brings to life the absurdity that is longing. “I wanna see you so bad, it hurts me all of the time /It's like when you cut your thumb, and then you heal it with lime,” sings Leavitt like a long-forgotten Hawthorne Heights track before following with a bridge of, “Romp around the rink, romp around the rink /Where do you think /Romp around the rink, romp around the rink /Star on the sink.” Fight Milk will be competing in this year's Sound Off!, a showcase for young artists in the surrounding Seattle area that has helped prior artists like Falon Sierra, Jason McCue, Naked Giants, Manatee Commune, Maiah Manser, and more gain a platform and industry education to bring their music to the mainstream. Today on The Mark Howley Show, Mark interviews Grant Mullen, guitarist and singer of the Seattle based trio Naked Giants! Grant opens up about his upbringing, passion for music starting from a young age, touring the world, and the rise of Naked Giants. A peak behind the curtain of a committed musician who burst onto the national music scene with Naked Giant's 2018 full-length debut, SLUFF. Their unhinged pop-punk-grunge-surf-rock is well worth checking out after your listen to our interview with Grant Mullen.
Emails, Ted vs the FCC, We're joined by local band Naked Giants!
Grant Mullen, Gianni Aiello and Henry LaVallee were just out of high school when their 2018 debut SLUFF came sprawling out all over the place with all the things – a pop/punk/garage/surf/rock-out frenzy, with the kind of hooks that grab from the start. In various interviews with Naked Giants (well, a lot of interviews), everybody […]
Talaya. - "Sola Fide + No Way (feat. Brandon Marsalis & Crissy P)" from the 2021 album Existential Soul on Talaya's Music. “Sola Fide + No Way” is an exemplification in song of a whole new crop of young, self-taught, self-made artists that is currently rising in the Seattle area. The hypnotic track off of Talaya's debut full-length Existential Soul sees the R&B soul songstress team up with rappers Brandon Marsalis of Tacoma and Kent-based Crissy P for a sophisticated and spiritual quest to find the light. An audio engineer by day, Talaya first gained recognition for her vocal prowess at 2020's Sound Off! The 21-and-under competition has been the symbolic birthplace of artists like Naked Giants, Dave B, Emma Lee Toyoda, and Travis Thompson and is seen as one of the main opportunities that young artists in the Northwest can get exposure. Crissy P also falls into that category, as a finalist in 2019's competition and now an activist using his insightful voice on his 2020 debut full-length The East Coordinate to amplify the causes close to his heart. “Is you Christian all the way?” Marsalis ponders on “Sola Fide +No Way,” questioning the intentions behind performative religion. Reflection is big for the 24-year-old artist, who beautifully articulates the big questions in life on his 2019 album Ouroboros. While none of these artists have yet lived a quarter century on this planet, their ability to express larger-than-life concepts bodes very well for the next generation. Naked Giants - "Take A Chance" from the 2020 album The Shadow on New West Records. Seattle trio Naked Giants return this month with their sophomore album The Shadow, an album they say is "much more honest" than their 2018 debut full-length SLUFF. “We’ve come to realize that the path to becoming a better person and bringing positivity into the world isn’t always linear, and there’s a lot of growth in taking an honest look at the “shadow-y” parts of life,” they toldSpin Magazine. “Whether it’s personal anxiety and depression or collective guilt and trauma, there’s always a part of yourself that’s hard to confront and understand. But The Shadow is all about facing that darkness and having the strength to bring it into the light.” As for today's Song of the Day, the guys call it, “...a new step in the dance-the-stress-away attitude we’ve had since the band was formed. This time around it’s a bit more focused – we’re exploring these big unanswered questions in our lives, like the mechanisms of privilege and oppression or the capitalist oxymoron of individualism and assimilation, and we’re pairing it all with a danceable backbeat to tell people it’s ok to get up off the couch and do something about it.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

They're wearing clothes and are normally sized (at least in this session), but make no mistake - Naked Giants rip and roar as powerfully as they would even if they were the unclothed titans their name implies. The Seattle trio enter the KEXP studio, plug in, and charge ahead so hard that two out of the three members don't finish the session with their headphones on (only because the third member taped his to his head) in this session featuring out a pair of tunes from their debut EP R.I.P. and two as-yet-unreleased ones on the Morning Show with John Richards. On this week's episode of SMI Radio, Naked Giants visit the Critical Sun Radio Studio to chat with host Greg Roth and perform live in studio. The boys will be performing live at Timber! Outdoor Music Festival taking place in Carnation, Washington July 16 - 18. Naked Giants will be taking the main stage at 4:40 on Saturday (6/17). Based on what you we heard and saw in the studio, this is a band not to be missed! In the second half of the show, Greg caught up down with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame DJ, and music curator Marco Collins a few weeks back while he was taking a break from his MC duties at Fisherman's Village Music Festival. Marco gets personal as he talks about his movie The Glamour and The Squalor, which made its very successful debut at SIFF to rave reviews. Marco also shares his insights to the state of the music industry today and his continued passion for discovering and curating great Northwest artists. Marco will be the official MC for Chinook Fest Summit 2015 taking place this weekend, July 10- 12. Marco will be hosting and DJ the after-party on Saturday (7/11) right after headliner Allen Stone finishes his headlining set.
