People die all the time, right? Death is inevitable, as our wise elders say. So when thousands of young, healthy men randomly drop dead, no one should be surprised… right?  Well… unless a professional poisoner lived in your town.  Between 1600 to 1900s in Europe, a bunch of women came to be known as professional poisoners. These women were skilled in modern chemistry and decided to use their skills in a different way -- to help women stuck in abusive marriages.  If you were a woman in Renaissance France, you could walk up to the house of La Voison, the local "witch" who would gladly hand you a giant bottle of arsenic to murder your husband.  If you were a woman in mid-1600s Italy, the mother-daughter duo of La Tofania and Guilia Tofana would supply with a potent blend of poisons to make sure your darling spouse slowly withered away -- slow enough that you could still get his inheritance.  And if you were lucky enough to live in Serbia in the early 1900s, Baba Anujka would have you covered. Anna Draksin, "Baba Anujka," was the world's oldest (and possibly most-prolific serial killer). She was also a master chemist, a probable genius, and arguably the first CEO of Murder Inc.; turning her licensed "witch doctor," business into a million dollar enterprise in the early decades of the 20th century. Ana di Pištonja urodziła się pod koniec XIX wieku. Od dziecka pasjonowała się medycyną i chemią. Była młodą, ambitną i dobrze wykształconą kobietą, a gdy jej życie miłosne i rodzinne nie potoczyło się tak, jakby tego chciała, powróciła do swojego zamiłowania, czyli ziołolecznictwa. Jej mikstury były sławne w całej okolicy, gdyż skutecznie pomagała usuwać problemy w postaci mężów, teściów czy też innych niepożądanych osób.

Baba Anujka was an amateur chemist from Vladmirovac, Yugoslavia, who poisoned at least 50 people and as many as 150 in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Giulia Tofana was a 17th-century professional poisoner who sold her signature concoction to wives that wanted to kill their husbands. She was responsible for around 600 deaths!

Happy New Year! We are back-ack-ack. In this episode, Danielle covers the story of the oldest serial killer in modern history, Baba Anujka. She used her knowledge of herbalism, medicine, and chemistry to create killer love potions. Literally. Her love potions contained mixtures of arsenic and mercury. Her widespread consumer base was made up of women who were unhappily married. Eventually, Anujka's reign of terror came to an end and she was incarcerated only to be released eight years later, due to old age. Later, Sandra talks about the Yowie. Located in Australia, the Yowie is similar to America's BigFoot. Supposedly located in the Outback, the Yowie legend has been around since 1795. The Yowie has been described as an ape-like creature that stands between six to twelve feet. Baba Anujka poisoned at least 50 people and possibly as many as 150 in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She was apprehended in 1928 at age 90 and sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1929 as an accomplice in two murders.
