A grandmother with a peculiar laugh who poisoned multiple husbands with rat poison and confessed with a smile—welcome to the disturbing case of Nanny Doss, "La Viuda Negra" (The Black Widow) or "La Abuelita Risueña" (The Smiling Grandmother). When investigators questioned Nanny about her husband Samuel's suspicious death, they encountered not a nervous suspect but a woman casually reading romance magazines and flirting with her interrogators. While local police struggled to penetrate her cheerful facade, Special Agent Ray Page finally broke through by asking about the "ghosts" of her past victims. What followed was a chilling confession delivered with disarming casualness: "I put rat poison in his coffee." Her reason? Samuel wouldn't let her watch her favorite TV shows. The investigation revealed arsenic in the bodies of multiple husbands across several states. Perhaps most disturbing was the discovery that when caught, Nanny already had a dozen potential suitors lined up to become her next victims. Her charm continued even in prison, where she received romantic fan mail despite her conviction. Psychiatrists found no basis for an insanity defense—her actions were calculated and deliberate. The psychological roots of Nanny's murders stemmed from two contradictory values instilled in childhood: her father's belief that human life only had value if productive, and her mother's teaching that true love was life's ultimate goal. The society that created her—with rigid expectations for women as wives and mothers—provided perfect cover for her crimes. No one expected that behind that pleasant smile lurked one of America's most prolific female serial killers, turning domestic life into her killing ground.Listen now to hear the full story of America's unexpected "Giggling Grandma" killer. The seventh installment of Nanny Doss's murderous journey brings us to Samuel Doss, a man whose righteous façade conceals a suffocating rigidity that awakens long-buried trauma in his new bride. After a brief courtship, Nanny marries Samuel, a 59-year-old Oklahoma state road inspector and Sunday preacher who neither drinks, smokes, nor gambles. Initially seeing him as the answer to her failed marriages, Nanny quickly discovers that Samuel's pious exterior masks a controlling personality reminiscent of her abusive father. Every aspect of daily life falls under Samuel's strict regulation – from when lights may be turned on to which chair she may sit in while reading. When Nanny flees to Alabama after three months of marriage, Samuel responds not with genuine remorse but with calculated negotiation: adopt his lifestyle, and he'll share financial control. The parallels between Samuel and her father become impossible for Nanny to ignore, transforming this marriage into an opportunity for symbolic vengeance. The final breaking point arrives when Samuel discovers and condemns Nanny's beloved romance novels as sinful literature, stripping away her last source of joy and escape. What follows is a methodical poisoning that lands Samuel in the hospital for 23 days before a seemingly miraculous recovery. Upon his return home, Nanny prepares a special homecoming meal complete with poisoned coffee – a final act that might have gone undetected if not for Dr. Schwalbein's professional curiosity leading to an autopsy that reveals lethal amounts of cyanide.Join us for this haunting exploration of how childhood trauma, rigid control, and the dismissal of a woman's simple pleasures created the perfect psychological storm for murder. She's supposed to nurture and guide her children from infancy into childhood and adolescence. The very thought of murdering a child—much less their own child—is not only bizarre but perhaps the most disturbing thought a parent could have! Exploring the ultimate betrayal of a mother's duty, Killer Moms: True Stories recounts 31 harrowing tales of motherhood gone wrong, including … Rachel David, who believed she was married to God. Magda Goebbels, one of the most powerful women in Nazi Germany, the propaganda minister's wife and a Hitler favorite. The ambiguous Casey Anthony case, whose acquittal shocked the public. Melissa Drexler, aka “The Prom Mom,” who hid her pregnancy from everyone. Rosemary West, one of England's most notorious serial killers. Lindsey Nicole Blansett, whose solution to ensuring her children wouldn't suffer in the future was to make sure they did not have a future. Nannie Doss, the “Giggling Granny,” who managed to murder four generations of her family in a killing spree that lasted 30 years. Angela Camacho, who helped her husband murder her three young children because he believed they were possessed by witches. On today's Show, Amanda R. Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong dives into the case of Nannie Doss, also known as the “Giggling Granny.” From 1927 to 1954, Doss poisoned and killed four of her five husbands – and was even suspected of killing her own family members along the way. By luring her love interests from “lonely hearts” newspaper columns and keeping up a sweet, smiley exterior, Nannie was able to kill undetected for years, with no one suspecting a thing. Candice explores how Nannie's method of murder kept her under the radar, and why she felt compelled to kill her loved ones. Psycho's and Sociopath's Nannie Doss
Today's True Weird Stuff - On Her Nerves She was known as the Giggling Granny...but behind the warm smile of Nannie Doss was the heart of a cold-blooded murderer. In 1954 she confessed that over the course of nearly 30 years she'd killed 11 people: four husbands, two children, one of her sisters, her own mother, two grandsons, and a mother-in-law. The casual killing of her own family members made Nannie Doss one of history's most notorious female serial killers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nannie Doss grew up working on a farm and quitting school by the 6th grade as her father was very controlling and abusive. When Nannie was just 9 years old her family took a train to see family but while on the train it made a sudden stop making Nannie hit her head on a metal pole located in front of her, Nannie was not the same after that. She went on to marry her first husband at just 16 years old producing 4 children. Although, the two youngest would die suddenly from what appeared to be food poisoning. After many people died throughout her lifetime, she finally met Samuel Doss her fifth husband, but he too would die under suspicious circumstances. Finally, doctors ordered to perform an autopsy on Samuel and what they found was astonishing.

In a chilling narrative of domestic deceit, James Craig, a 45-year-old dentist from Aurora, Colorado, stands accused of the calculated murder of his wife, Angela Craig. The alleged poisoner, now facing charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, reportedly used cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, an ingredient typically found in eyedrops, to fatally poison his spouse. However, Craig's story is not unique - many other individuals have fallen into the dark abyss of using poison as a tool for murder. Let's explore these sinister cases and the eerily similar characteristics that these offenders share. James Craig's alleged modus operandi was meticulously planned and alarmingly cold-blooded. His wife's protein shakes were reportedly the vehicle of poison, laced with lethal doses of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline. The disturbing internet search history on Craig's office computer, queries such as "Is Arsenic Detectable in Autopsy," paints a macabre picture of premeditated murder. This pattern of methodical planning and deception is a common thread among poisoners. Notoriously, British doctor Harold Shipman, dubbed "Dr. Death," used his trusted position to administer fatal doses of diamorphine to his patients under the guise of routine treatment. Similarly, Mary Ann Cotton, a 19th-century Englishwoman, allegedly poisoned up to 21 people, including her own children, using arsenic. Another characteristic prevalent among these offenders is their superficial charm and the ability to maintain a façade of normalcy. Before his arrest, James Craig was a respected dentist and a family man in his local community. This ability to lead a seemingly 'normal' life while harboring dark secrets is a shared trait among many poisoners. For instance, the affable and charismatic persona of America's "Auntie Poldi," a.k.a. Nannie Doss, concealed her deadly intentions, leading to the demise of multiple husbands. Financial motivations or the desire for freedom often underpin these horrific acts. Craig's failing dental practice and numerous debts hint at possible financial incentives behind his wife's murder. This echoes the case of Stacey Castor, who poisoned her two husbands for life insurance payouts. The subtle yet potent nature of poison and the ability to administer it surreptitiously draw these individuals towards such a heinous crime. However, the detailed forensics of the modern era, coupled with diligent investigative work, often bring these plots to light, as in Craig's case. As we delve into the mind of James Craig and his counterparts, we find a complex interplay of cunning planning, charming deception, and disturbing motivations. Unraveling these characteristics, we glimpse the shadowy figure of the poisoner, a character whose actions leave a trail of heartbreak and loss in their wake. The true tragedy, however, remains the innocent lives ruthlessly extinguished, and the shattered families left to grapple with their grief. Remember, if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic issues, help is always available. Contact a trusted individual or local support services - you are not alone.
