The Murder of Betsy Faria: Part Five - CONCLUSION

The conviction landed in the courtroom with the kind of quiet that doesn't feel quiet while you're sitting inside it. Russ Faria had walked in still insisting he did not kill his wife. By the time the jury came back, the state's version had beaten the room into shape. Husband. Sick wife. Knife. Blood. Rage. Motive. A marriage prosecutors said had been rotting underneath everything else. Joel Schwartz stood beside him when the verdict came down. Guilty. First-degree murder. Russ did not collapse. He did not shout over the judge. He stood there with the stunned, rigid look of a man hearing something impossible spoken in a room where impossible things still become official. The people who believed in him sat behind him with the same sickened stillness, looking at the jury box, then at Russ, then at the lawyers who had already started thinking about what came next.Pam Hupp walked out of that first trial as one of the state's most important witnesses, and for a while, the public version of the story held. She had told investigators Betsy feared Russ. She had helped frame the emotional shape of the marriage. Prosecutors had used that shape to make the physical violence inside the house feel like it belonged to the husband. Russ went to prison with a life sentence attached to his name. Outside prison, the people who stood by him did not have the luxury of moving on. His friends from game night still had the same problem they had carried from the beginning: their memories of that night did not fit the story the state had told in court. The jury had heard enough to convict him, but the people who had sat with Russ that evening kept returning to the clock, the drive, the distance, and the narrow window prosecutors said held a murder...This is the FINAL Episode of Kinda Murdery's investigation of the Murder of Betsy Faria Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/pam-hupphttps://time.com/6156033/the-thing-about-pam-renee-zellweger-true-story/https://www.stlmag.com/longform/pam-hupp/https://www.stlmag.com/news/defense-attorney-joel-schwartz-charles-bosworth-new-book-bone-deep-true-crime-betsy-faria-pam-hupp/https://people.com/pam-hupp-charge-refiled-betsy-faria-stabbing-death-8384298https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/crime/pam-hupp-may-not-be-tried-for-betsy-farias-murder-until-2028/63-fc0923af-96e0-409a-84d3-bc585dba3ef3https://fox2now.com/news/fox-files/pam-hupp-trial-delayed-but-unexpected-encounter-outside-highlights-day/https://insurancenewsnet.com/oarticle/Russell-Farias-wife-was-stabbed-55-times-but-was-he-the-killer-a-471968https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/pamela-hupp-murder-betsy-faria-dateline-podcast-1196738/https://crimereads.com/the-bizarre-self-incriminating-confession-of-pam-hupp/https://rsflawfirm.com/Firm-News/Russell-Faria-Acquitted-Of-Wife-s-Murder/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

Pam Hupp's public role in the case continued growing during that same stretch. Reporters increasingly framed her as Betsy's close friend and confidante—the person who had driven Betsy home from chemotherapy, spent time with her during her final months, and spoken openly about Betsy's fears regarding the marriage. Detectives and prosecutors continued treating her as one of the most emotionally compelling witnesses surrounding the case. Pam appeared calm in public settings connected to the investigation. Controlled. Sympathetic. She spoke about Betsy naturally enough that investigators and reporters alike kept returning to her for perspective about Betsy's life and emotional state before the murder. At the same time, other people around the case began reacting differently to how central Pam had become in the public narrative. Some family members and friends focused entirely on Betsy and the grief surrounding the murder. Others started quietly questioning why Pam seemed so deeply embedded in nearly every version of the story emerging publicly around the case...Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/pam-hupphttps://time.com/6156033/the-thing-about-pam-renee-zellweger-true-story/https://www.stlmag.com/longform/pam-hupp/https://www.stlmag.com/news/defense-attorney-joel-schwartz-charles-bosworth-new-book-bone-deep-true-crime-betsy-faria-pam-hupp/https://people.com/pam-hupp-charge-refiled-betsy-faria-stabbing-death-8384298https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/crime/pam-hupp-may-not-be-tried-for-betsy-farias-murder-until-2028/63-fc0923af-96e0-409a-84d3-bc585dba3ef3https://fox2now.com/news/fox-files/pam-hupp-trial-delayed-but-unexpected-encounter-outside-highlights-day/https://insurancenewsnet.com/oarticle/Russell-Farias-wife-was-stabbed-55-times-but-was-he-the-killer-a-471968https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/pamela-hupp-murder-betsy-faria-dateline-podcast-1196738/https://crimereads.com/the-bizarre-self-incriminating-confession-of-pam-hupp/https://rsflawfirm.com/Firm-News/Russell-Faria-Acquitted-Of-Wife-s-Murder/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

The house in Troy stayed lit long after most of the neighborhood had gone dark again. Patrol cars still lined portions of the street, though fewer than earlier in the investigation. The frantic movement from the first night had faded into something quieter and more methodical. Detectives came and went carrying folders, sealed evidence containers, and cups of coffee that had gone cold before anyone finished them. The front lawn showed the wear of hours of foot traffic—mud pressed into the grass near the walkway, tire tracks along the curb where vehicles had pulled in and out through the night. Inside, the living room remained partially sealed off while investigators worked through the last sections of evidence collection. Portions of the carpet had already been removed. The couch still sat in place under the harsh light investigators had brought into the room, its familiar shape now surrounded by equipment cases, extension cords, evidence markers, and plastic sheeting spread across the floor. Detectives no longer spoke about the scene like something uncertain...Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/pam-hupphttps://time.com/6156033/the-thing-about-pam-renee-zellweger-true-story/https://www.stlmag.com/longform/pam-hupp/https://www.stlmag.com/news/defense-attorney-joel-schwartz-charles-bosworth-new-book-bone-deep-true-crime-betsy-faria-pam-hupp/https://people.com/pam-hupp-charge-refiled-betsy-faria-stabbing-death-8384298https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/crime/pam-hupp-may-not-be-tried-for-betsy-farias-murder-until-2028/63-fc0923af-96e0-409a-84d3-bc585dba3ef3https://fox2now.com/news/fox-files/pam-hupp-trial-delayed-but-unexpected-encounter-outside-highlights-day/https://insurancenewsnet.com/oarticle/Russell-Farias-wife-was-stabbed-55-times-but-was-he-the-killer-a-471968https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/pamela-hupp-murder-betsy-faria-dateline-podcast-1196738/https://crimereads.com/the-bizarre-self-incriminating-confession-of-pam-hupp/https://rsflawfirm.com/Firm-News/Russell-Faria-Acquitted-Of-Wife-s-Murder/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

The first deputies through the front door found Russ standing near the edge of the living room with a phone still pressed against his ear. The dispatcher's voice could be heard faintly through the receiver while officers stepped past him into the house. One deputy moved directly toward Betsy on the floor beside the couch while another stopped with Russ near the entry, keeping him back with a hand lightly against his arm. “What happened?” Russ looked past the deputy toward the living room before answering. “I came home and found her like that.” The deputy asked if anybody else was inside the house. Russ shook his head once and said no. His breathing still came fast between answers. Blood had dried in streaks across one hand and along the front of his pants where he had wiped his palm earlier without thinking about it. The deputy near Betsy crouched low beside the body, taking the room in piece by piece before touching anything. The living room stayed quiet except for radios, footsteps, and the dispatcher still talking faintly through Russ's phone. Betsy lay beside the couch where Russ had found her, one arm angled awkwardly near her side, blood spread beneath her into the carpet. The knife protruding from her neck remained untouched. A deputy leaned in close, checking for signs of life while another officer stood back near the hallway watching the rest of the house. Russ kept turning his head toward the floor beside the couch while questions continued around him. “What's your name?” “Russ Faria.” “How long were you gone tonight?” “A few hours.” “Where were you?” “With friends.” The deputy writing notes asked him to repeat the names slowly while he wrote them down one at a time. Russ rubbed both hands against his jeans between answers, leaving darker smears where blood still hadn't dried completely...Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/pam-hupphttps://time.com/6156033/the-thing-about-pam-renee-zellweger-true-story/https://www.stlmag.com/longform/pam-hupp/https://www.stlmag.com/news/defense-attorney-joel-schwartz-charles-bosworth-new-book-bone-deep-true-crime-betsy-faria-pam-hupp/https://people.com/pam-hupp-charge-refiled-betsy-faria-stabbing-death-8384298https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/crime/pam-hupp-may-not-be-tried-for-betsy-farias-murder-until-2028/63-fc0923af-96e0-409a-84d3-bc585dba3ef3https://fox2now.com/news/fox-files/pam-hupp-trial-delayed-but-unexpected-encounter-outside-highlights-day/https://insurancenewsnet.com/oarticle/Russell-Farias-wife-was-stabbed-55-times-but-was-he-the-killer-a-471968https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/pamela-hupp-murder-betsy-faria-dateline-podcast-1196738/https://crimereads.com/the-bizarre-self-incriminating-confession-of-pam-hupp/https://rsflawfirm.com/Firm-News/Russell-Faria-Acquitted-Of-Wife-s-Murder/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

Russ turned into the driveway and let the headlights wash over the garage door before he killed the engine. For a second he stayed where he was, both hands on the wheel, looking at the house the way you do when you're finishing an ordinary day and expect the next few minutes to be ordinary too. The porch light was on. Light showed through a couple of windows. Nothing outside looked wrong. No open door, no movement, no shadows where they shouldn't be. He took the keys from the ignition, pushed the driver's door open, and stepped out into the cold. The car door shut behind him with a solid, familiar sound. He walked up the short path, keys in one hand, shoulders a little hunched against the night air, and let himself in. “Betsy,” he called as soon as he crossed the threshold. His voice moved ahead of him into the house and disappeared there. He pulled the door mostly shut behind him, not all the way, just enough for the latch to catch. The house answered him with silence...Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/pam-hupphttps://time.com/6156033/the-thing-about-pam-renee-zellweger-true-story/https://www.stlmag.com/longform/pam-hupp/https://www.stlmag.com/news/defense-attorney-joel-schwartz-charles-bosworth-new-book-bone-deep-true-crime-betsy-faria-pam-hupp/https://people.com/pam-hupp-charge-refiled-betsy-faria-stabbing-death-8384298https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/crime/pam-hupp-may-not-be-tried-for-betsy-farias-murder-until-2028/63-fc0923af-96e0-409a-84d3-bc585dba3ef3https://fox2now.com/news/fox-files/pam-hupp-trial-delayed-but-unexpected-encounter-outside-highlights-day/https://insurancenewsnet.com/oarticle/Russell-Farias-wife-was-stabbed-55-times-but-was-he-the-killer-a-471968https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/pamela-hupp-murder-betsy-faria-dateline-podcast-1196738/https://crimereads.com/the-bizarre-self-incriminating-confession-of-pam-hupp/https://rsflawfirm.com/Firm-News/Russell-Faria-Acquitted-Of-Wife-s-Murder/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

The Las Cruces Bowling Alley Massacre has a permanent investigation room inside the police station.  Tables are fixed in place, walls used for more than overflow, and everything that comes in is immediately sorted into where it fits or discarded when it doesn't. Photographs remain grouped by location, but the emphasis has moved to timelines and connections. Statements are broken down into components—time, location, observation—and those components are compared across every person who spoke. Anything that aligns is marked. Anything that drifts even slightly is flagged and held back from the core.  Is there a connection between the Austin Yogurt Shop Murders and the Las Cruces Bowling Alley Massacre?Sources: https://lascruces.gov/las-cruces-mass-shooting-unsolved-after-35-years/https://www.borderreport.com/regions/new-mexico/las-cruces-bowling-alley-massacre-still-unsolved-after-nearly-4-decades/https://kfoxtv.com/news/local/las-cruces-police-seek-new-leads-in-1990-mass-shooting-casehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Cruces_bowling_alley_massacrehttps://www.krwg.org/regional/2017-02-10/27-year-anniversary-of-las-cruces-bowling-alley-massacre?https://kfoxtv.com/news/crime-news/family-remembers-victim-of-bowling-alley-massacre-investigation-continues Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

The call hits the fire department like any other at first—just another line lighting up, another voice on the other end trying to get words out fast enough to keep up with what they're seeing. Smoke at the bowling alley. That's the message that gets through clean. Everything else comes in fragments. The dispatcher pins down the address, repeats it back, fingers already moving across the board, assigning units before the caller even finishes the second sentence. You've got engines rolling within seconds. Midday, traffic moving steady but not clogged, sirens cutting through it as the first trucks make their way toward the strip where the building sits. When they turn in, they see it. Smoke pushing out of the structure, not pouring out in a full column, but steady enough that you don't have to guess what you're dealing with. It's coming from inside, finding its way out through whatever gaps it can. The front of the building is still intact. No broken windows, no collapse, nothing that suggests the place has already given up. Just that slow, persistent push of smoke that tells you something's burning where it shouldn't be...Sources:https://lascruces.gov/las-cruces-mass-shooting-unsolved-after-35-years/https://www.borderreport.com/regions/new-mexico/las-cruces-bowling-alley-massacre-still-unsolved-after-nearly-4-decades/https://kfoxtv.com/news/local/las-cruces-police-seek-new-leads-in-1990-mass-shooting-casehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Cruces_bowling_alley_massacrehttps://www.krwg.org/regional/2017-02-10/27-year-anniversary-of-las-cruces-bowling-alley-massacre?https://kfoxtv.com/news/crime-news/family-remembers-victim-of-bowling-alley-massacre-investigation-continues Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

February 10th, 1990. Saturday morning in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The place is Las Cruces Bowl—nothing special from the outside. Low building, wide parking lot, the kind of spot people go to because they've been going there for years. Inside, it's exactly what you'd expect. Long rows of lanes stretching out under fluorescent lights, the steady smell of oil and cleaner baked into the wood and carpet. Front counter off to one side where they handle shoes and payments. And behind that, a small office—tight, functional, where they keep the safe, the paperwork, the money from the night before. Mornings like that don't carry much weight. You're not dealing with a crowd yet. It's just opening up—lights, registers, getting everything ready before the first customers drift in. The routine doesn't change. Unlock the doors, count the cash, check the drawers, make sure nothing's off from the previous night. It's muscle memory more than anything. People move through it without thinking. There were seven people inside that morning. Employees getting the place ready, moving between the counter and the office, handling the same tasks they handled every weekend. A couple of kids were there too. That wasn't unusual. Bowling alleys always had that overlap—work and family, people hanging around because they were part of the place, not just passing through it. Nobody's on edge. Nobody's watching the door or thinking about who might come through it. There's no reason to...Sources:https://lascruces.gov/las-cruces-mass-shooting-unsolved-after-35-years/https://www.borderreport.com/regions/new-mexico/las-cruces-bowling-alley-massacre-still-unsolved-after-nearly-4-decades/https://kfoxtv.com/news/local/las-cruces-police-seek-new-leads-in-1990-mass-shooting-casehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Cruces_bowling_alley_massacrehttps://www.krwg.org/regional/2017-02-10/27-year-anniversary-of-las-cruces-bowling-alley-massacre?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery-true-crime-murder-stories--5496890/support.Zevon Odelberg is a true crime podcast host and disability advocate.  Zevon has cerebral palsy and he wants Kinda Murdery to be welcoming community for people with disabilities and for people living with challenges of any kind.  Life can be hard, but being together makes it better.

Many of us first heard Wesley Stace on the 1990 album Here Comes the Groom that he recorded as John Wesley Harding, the name taken from Bob Dylan's stripped-down late-1967 album that itself misspelled a Texas outlaw's name. The English singer-songwriter has enjoyed a robust folk-rock career as Harding but also has written four acclaimed novels under his own name and began recording albums without the pseudonym in 2013. Still, he recently performed as John Wesley Harding at a Wild Honey Foundation tribute concert to Warren Zevon and on his own tour. Here he discusses where Harding ends and Stace begins (or vice versa), how he evolved as an artist, why he mined Frank Capra projects for early album titles, what Zevon once told him, how he reacted to not-so-nice comments from Elvis Costello and why he decided to become a U.S. citizen in 2025. Stace, no surprise, is as thoughtful and witty in conversation as in song. (Photo by Ebet Roberts)

Today, Cora has her most personal conversation to date. At her home in Maine, she speaks to her childhood friend Graham Platner about his unique campaign for U.S. Senate. Running as a progressive democrat, Graham hopes to change the American system to support working class families and fight the oligarchy."My hope, at its core, is that working people in this country begin to realize that many of the divisive issues that we all find ourselves on opposite sides of are merely there to keep us all divided. And that we can build a real sense of true solidarity with each other over the fact that we all know that the system is not built for us, it is not representing us, and the more of that solidarity that we can build, the more organizing capacity that we can build on the ground amongst working people, the more power that we can take back from the political structure that have left us so unrepresented for so long." – Graham PlatnerGraham and Cora discuss everything from how his military service has influenced his thoughts on foreign policy to the importance of family farms. This is an intimate conversation had in her living room, with Graham sharing his lived experiences that have shaped him into the man who is becoming the political movement of Graham for Maine. About Graham: Graham Platner is a Marine and U.S. Army veteran, oyster farmer, and chair of the Sullivan Planning Board, and candidate running for U.S. Senate in Maine, to defeat Susan Collins and win back the seat for working Mainers. Whether it was enlisting in the US Marine Corps, or coming back home to Maine to work in his community, or running for Senate, at the core of every decision Graham has made has been how he can best serve the people of Maine. After graduating high school in 2003, during the height of the Iraq War, Graham snuck his birth certificate out of his father's office to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. After completing his infantry training, Graham was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion 8th Marines and deployed to Al-Anbar Province, Iraq in January of 2005 where the battalion served primarily in the area east of Fallujah. In 2006, he was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq and served as machinegun section leader at the Government Center. He was deployed again in 2007.After his third deployment, Graham enrolled at The George Washington University using the GI Bill. Graham quickly realized that his time serving in uniform was not over. So in 2009, he joined the Maryland Army National Guard. He was deployed to Afghanistan the following year where he served as a rifle team leader.

He returned from Afghanistan and went back to school at The George Washington University in 2011. Like many veterans, Graham struggled with undiagnosed PTSD and physical challenges that come from heavy infantry combat. Graham eventually withdrew from George Washington University and moved back home to Maine where he used the resources from the Department of Veterans Affairs to get the help he needed. After four tours overseas, Graham was deeply disillusioned with America's failed foreign policy and endless wars and decided to focus on serving his local community in Maine. In 2018, Graham started working on his friend's small oyster farm in his hometown of Sullivan. He quickly felt deeply connected with the sea and the community. He eventually took over the oyster farm and built it into a business that produces high quality oysters. Graham also began a diving and mooring service to help out around the bay, and serves the town of Sullivan as Harbormaster and Planning Board Chair.

He met Amy Gertner in 2023, fell in love, and got married soon after. They now reside in Sullivan—three doors down from where Graham grew up—with their two dogs Gryffin and Zevon and their cat Neptune.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Is a double album a record label cash grab, or a way to deliver great music that can't be contained within the usual confines of a single LP? The double album has been both. This episode, we look at how the double album came to be, and some of the greatest double albums from the 70's.  Most of these albums show career-best work from legendary artists such as The Beatles, The Clash, Bob Dylan, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Genesis, Elton John, The Who (twice!) - and more! And soon, we'll do an episode on the Greatest Double Albums of the 80's - and there's a stack of those, too!!Our “Album you must hear Before You Die” is the 1973 live album “It's too Late to Stop Now” by Van Morrison.  Neither of us is much of a Morrison fan, despite his passionate, improvisational vocals. Regarded as an energetic, spontaneous live experience, Morrison's vocal mannerisms illustrate why we don't think much of it.  We also found a great documentary on-line called “Keep me in your Heart” about – surprise! - Warren Zevon.  It captured Zevon in the last days before his death & showed why his fans loved him. We think you'll really love this episode!  References: Hot August Night, Neil Diamond, Greek Theatre in LA, Derek and the Dominos, 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs', Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Fleetwood Mac, 'Tusk', Lindsey Buckingham, “Lindsay's Folly”, Chilean profanities, "Puta la cagó", Pink Floyd, 'The Wall', Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, “One of my Turns”, "In The Flesh”, Elton John, 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', Warren Zevon, “Keep me in your Heart”, “The Wind”, The Beatles, “The White Album”, The Who, “Tommy”, Dylan, “Blonde on Blonde”, Deep Purple, “Made in Japan”, “Pinball Wizard”, Elton John, Keith Moon, Tommy Australian cast - Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, 'Quadrophenia', The Band, 'Rock of Ages', “The Last Waltz”, Bee Gees, 'Saturday Night Fever', Dexter Resurrection, Kiss, 'Alive!', "Rock and Roll All Nite", The Simpsons, “I Wanna rock'n'roll all Nite”, Genesis, 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway', Peter Frampton, 'Frampton Comes Alive!', Jeff Beck, Hordern Pavilion, Led Zeppelin, 'Physical Graffiti', “Kashmir”, Robert Plant, Hipgnosis Record Covers, The Clash, 'London Calling', The Rolling Stones, 'Exile on Main St.', “Happy”, Rolling Stone's List of 500 Greatest Albums of all Time, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Helter Skelter" Links  Playlist      “Keep me in your Heart” - A great documentary about Warren Zevon

We got a couple of world-class curmudgeons here - who share more than might meet the ear initially: two native Californians renown for their curdled opinion of the world they inhabit, and the populace with whom they share the space; We're talking Hollywood, specifically, but their bile was generous enough to accommodate the whole of humanity - in all its corrupt, hypocritical manifestations; both lost too early - victims of cancer's cruelty; both musical geniuses with solid classical training and rock n roll credentials; and, funny? Goddamn right, they were!Frank Zappa and Warren Zevon, two outlaws who could not be silenced or ignored are being celebrated here today. It should be noted that Frank was inducted posthumously into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame; Warren is still owed his due. FRANK ZAPPAThe man loved freaks, and had to create his own label to promote them. From the time he appeared on the Steve Allen show in the early 60's, playing the bicycle, to the early 90's, when he visited Czech Republic as an honored guest to the President, playwright-turned politician, Vaclav Havel after their Velvet Revolution, and throughout his vociferous fight against censorship in the halls of our Congress, Frank always stood strong for freedom of expression, and against hypocrisy. In “Plastic People” from his second album ABSOLUTELY FREE, you can hear so many elements mixed together that have become tropes: the abrupt changes in tempo and mood, the stinging social satire, the weird orchestration, the rock n roll name checks…. Good stuff!WARREN ZEVONWe always knew that Warren was tortured by demons. He struggled with his alcoholism for a long time and was subject to depression. But, despite it all he kept his unique humorous perspective. And, with a prodigious gift for melody, he wrote some of pop's most haunting ballads. He was, to borrow the words of Kris Kristofferson, a “walking contradiction” who could go to the darkest of dark sides, like in his rockers about serial killers, such as Excitable Boy and Werewolves of London - then, swing 180 degrees to express wrenching heartbreak in such timeless elegies as Hasten Down the Wind and Carmelita. In Splendid Isolation you get both - the swinging of the hips, and the stinging of the poisoned barb. It has an autobiographical persuasion which illuminates the soul of a man who longs to be left alone - the world is just too fucked up to navigate. There's a bitter sadness articulated, but its flavored with that ever-present Zevon wit.

Janiszewski's body showed signs of torture, starvation, and drowning. Despite an extensive police investigation featuring scuba divers and forensic specialists, no significant evidence was found. Janiszewski, described as a gentle man and an amateur guitarist, had a stable personal life with no known debts, enemies, or criminal record. He and his wife were planning to adopt a child. In Hollywood, the story beats of werewolf movies were codified in 1941 by a German-Jewish emigrant to Hollywood via London named Curt Siodmak, who wrote the seminal film 'The Wolf Man', starring Lon Chaney, Jr. 40 years later, John Landis made the most important and enduring and influential werewolf film ever made in 'An American Werewolf in London'. It was his follow-up to the one-two punch of 'Animal House' and 'The Blues Brothers'.  He could make any film he wanted, with anyone he wanted. So he made a script he'd begun when he was 18 years old. A script he'd first discussed with an aspiring special effects and creature-design guy named Rick Baker in 1971.  10 years later, he'd found two unknown leads, hired basically the entire cast of an acclaimed touring production of 'Nicholas Nickleby', and called Baker on the set of another werewolf movie ('The Howling') and convinced him to decamp to England to work on 'An American Werewolf in London'.  For his groundbreaking innovations on the film, Baker won the ver first Academy Award ever given for makeup special effects. Featuring a snappy, smart script, Landis' virtuosic comedy/horror chops, and an unexpected soundtrack of moon songs, 'An American Werewolf in London' is in a class by itself and is one of the most important films ever made. Other werewolf films of note and worthy of your time: 'Ginger Snaps' 'Wolfen' 'Wolf' 'Dog Soldiers' 'The Howling' 'The Wolf Man' (1941) 'Werewolf of London' (1935) "Werewolf of London' inspired Zevon's song 'Werewolves of London'. Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers had watched the film and told Zevon jokingly that he should write a song with that title and start a dance craze. And as far as listicles go, this one is well-reasoned by someone who knows their werewolf films: The 25 Best Werewolf Movies

What You'll Discover in This Episode: A Deep Dive into the Creative Process: Learn how songs like “Porcelain Monkey” emerged from everyday conversations and vivid storytelling. Jorge shares how a Graceland postcard sparked the song's haunting narrative about Elvis Presley. Zevon's Evolving Career: Explore how 'Life'll Kill Ya' marked Zevon's return after years of struggling for a record deal, with much of the album being self-recorded in his home studio, aptly named Anatomy of a Headache. The Lost Tapes: The pair reveal that the Master tapes for 'Life'll Kill Ya' are lost and only because of Zevon & Snyder's foresight were the tapes for his follow up album "The Wind" preserved & stored properly. Why This Episode Matters: 'Life'll Kill Ya' and 'My Ride's Here' represent two of Zevon's most introspective and uncompromising works, created during a period of significant personal and professional transformation. In December 2000, in a remote area of the Oder River in Poland, three fishermen discovered a dead body, initially mistaken for a log, near the shore. The corpse, with a noose around its neck and hands bound, was identified as Dariusz Janiszewski, a 35-year-old businessman from Wroclaw, reported missing by his wife four weeks earlier. The case remained a perplexing mystery with no apparent motive or suspects...Legendary Magic the Gathering Artist and friend of the show, ANSON MADDOCKS RETURNS and joins Zevon for this insane story of art imitating life, imitating art...Find Anson's incredible work here: https://ansonmaddocks.com/CALL 888-MURDERY, that's, 888-687-3379, to share YOUR Kinda Murdery story or your story of living with a disability or other challenges, and you could inspire an episode of the show!Sources:https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2008/02/11/true-crimehttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/sep/06/books.booksnewshttps://www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/archives/2007/09/23/2003380130Kristen Bell vs. Christian Bale

Whether he likes it or not, Warren Zevon will forever be most remembered for his surprise hit “Werewolves of London,” but he's a far more complex and interesting songwriter than most folks are aware. Forever a musician's musician, Zevon's unique voice has influenced scores of artists although he himself has remained something of a cult figure over the decades. While 1978's Excitable Boy does indeed feature his biggest hit, it is also home to some of the most sharp-witted and acidic songs he ever wrote. Join Dan, Mike, Rich, and returning guest Libby Cudmore as we discuss Zevon and his cast of psychopaths, mercenaries, screwups, and lycanthropes.NOTE: There's some strong language and dark subject matter in here, so be mindful of that if there's anyone around who shouldn't be hearing it. The rockstar Warren Zevon had been on the top of the Billboard charts. He'd been on the cover of Rolling Stone. He'd been admired by other great artists and musicians like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty. The heights of fame were enjoyable, but it took a jarring diagnosis of terminal lung cancer to give Zevon the kind of perspective that only a *memento mori* moment can give. And when it came, he passed it along in a very simple, very practical piece of advice:Enjoy every sandwich.✉️ Want Stoic wisdom delivered to your inbox daily?
