Nearest Airport: Gandhinagar Airport, Nashiki, ISK Nearest Railway Station: Nasik Road Railway Station, NK Prerequisites - NA Packing - NA Time of the year - All year round, except monsoons Length of the itinerary: 3 hours Itinerary Highlights: Amrita takes us on a virtual walk around the heritage part of Nashik city - Panchavati and Old Nashik Panchavati is the heritage part of Nashik that is home to some of the most sacred temples and old neighborhoods. We start our walk with a visit to the Kalaram temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Ram. The temple and the deity are sculpted in black basalt stone, hence the name Kalaram. The temple also houses idols of Sita and Lakshman and is estimated to be built between the 7th-11th century originally and reconstructed during the 1780s. Nashik has a lot of influence from the Hindu epic of Ramayan, as is seen from the temples and the names of the neighborhoods. The next stop is the Goraram temple, built in white marble and hence the name - Goraram or fair Ram, also believed to be built in the 1780s. The temple architecture resembles that of a wada (residence) and is very unique. Another popular festival of Nashik is the Rangapanchami, celebrated a few days after holi, the festival of colors. The festival is very popular for the Rahad or the colored water pits! Another popular temple in the locality is Kapaleshwar temple, close to the banks of the Godavari. It is unique for the mixed architecture and use of domes in the construction of the temple. From here, we make a stop at the Godavari ghats and the popular kunds - Ramkund, Lakshman kund and Sitakund. The kunds are very significant as people perform final rites of their loved ones in these kunds. Another popular structure in this area is the Ahilya Devi Holkar bridge - learn more about the wonderful stories around this bridge. Our final stop in Panchavati is the Naroshankar temple and it's iconic Naroshankar bell, acquired during the battle at Vasai fort. On the other side of the river is the Old city of Nashik that is popular for its markets and the wadas in the alleys. The popular markets include textile market (kaapadpet), Vessel market (bhaandi bazar), Jewellery market (Saraf bazar), steel market. One can spend hours in these markets and narrow alleys watching the beautiful wada architecture. We make some stops at local homes and discover the architecture of these old homes. Our final stop of the walk is the Sarkar wada, now a government museum but that has been used as an administrative office, prison, a public library and a police station! At the end of the walk, make sure to binge on some good old Nashik Misal, jalebis, fafdas, dhoklas (thanks to the gujarati influence), sabudana vada. One of the popular eateries in the locality is Sayantara! Other options include the numerous forts in and around Nashik and the iconic wineries of Nashik! Comparing two traditions: Workers' Theatre movement and Rashtra Seva Dal Kalapathak to trace the circulation of the form of Tamasha in nineteenth and twentieth century

Part of the International conference on Maharashtra in September 2021 - Makarand Sathe -Independent scholar, Pune Comparing Two Traditions: Workers' Theatre Movement and Rashtra Seva Dal Kalapathak to trace the circulation of the form of Tamasha in nineteenth and twentieth century Prior to 1842 Maharashtra did not have any theatre in the modern sense. There were many folk forms such as Tamasha, Lalit, Gondhal, Keertan, Powada, Dashavatar, of which Tamasha is the closest to modern theatre. It was a free-flowing form which was very conducive to rebellious and subversive socio-political content. Tamashas, that too of a specific type, had gained a lot of importance, during the period of Bajirao, the second. Debauchery and addiction had been rampant in the community, especially among the elites, i.e. Brahmins. Tamasha was dominated by then by the erotic. One of the reasons behind promoting the first Marathi play - Sita Swayanvar- in 1842 in the form of a mythological Yakshgan was to counteract the influence of Tamasha. Hundreds of mythological plays followed it Paradoxically every subversive theatre that followed, especially ones which were against Brahmanical upper class dominance, used Tamasha as form of expression - from Satyashodhaki Jalse and Ambedkari Jalse to Workers' theatre movement, Dalit theatre, Rashtrasevadal Kalapathak and experimental theatre. I would like to compare two such traditions, namely Workers' theatre movement, which called their theatre 'New Tamashas' (Nave Tamashe) and the Rashtrasevadal Kalapathak which called their plays 'National Tamashas' (Rashtriya Tamashe) and trace the circulation of the form of Tamasha in nineteenth and twentieth century. I propose to do so by comparing two plays written by two writer's belonging to these two traditions, Anna Bhau Sathe to the earlier and P. L. Drshpande to the latter. The name of the 'Rashtriya Tamasha' written by Deshpande was called 'Leader required' (Pudhari Pahije) to which Sathe had answered by a 'New Tamasha' titled 'We got the leader' (Pudhari Milala'). In short, the description of these two theatre traditions: When Marathi mainstream theatre was going through a dark period from 1930s to 1965, these two theatres flourished. As Mumbai began to develop into a new, prosperous, industrial centre, from late nineteenth century workers from the rest of Maharashtra began migrating to Mumbai in large numbers. Naturally the city was full of tremendous energy. But there were colliding interests and discordant politics. A powerful and vibrant working-class theatre was born out of all this intense activity and it followed the lines of the major workers' unions which were affiliated to the Communist Party of India. The most significant aspect of this movement was that even though the plays were created by playwrights who were not highly educated and were performed in front of thousands of workers who also were mostly uneducated, the themes were not dealt with superficially. Although ideologically articulated, it was well informed in its references to global politics. A parallel current of socio-political theatre also flourishing at the same time was the Rashtrasevadal Kalapathak which belonged to the Socialist Party. It was founded in 1946. Apart from their ideological differences from the Workers' theatre which clearly belonged to the communists, the major difference was that the writers and performers of Kalapathaks came from middle-class, high-caste backgrounds.

Famous Indian Personalities - Everyone Should Know About

Rani Laxmi Bai was named Manikarnika Tambe and was nicknamed as Manu. She is also known as Jhansi Ki Rani, the queen who was fought against the British without any fear. She was born on 19th November 1828, in the town of Varanasi. Her father was Moropant Tambe and her mother Bhagirathi Sapre. Her father was the commander to the King of Peshwa, Bajirao of Bitoor district. The Peshwa called her "Chhabili" for her playful nature. She was educated at home and learned sports with her friends Nana Sahib and Tatya Tope like martial arts, horse riding, sword fighting, and more. She always preferred traveling on the horseback to using a palanquin. Her horses included Sarangi, Pavan, and Baadal.   She was married to the King of Jhansi and that's when she became Rani Laxmi Bai from Manikarnika. Later she adopted a boy and named him Damodar Rao. After the death of the King, the British Raj officers applied the Doctrine of Lapse, a policy according to which if any Indian ruler dies without leaving a natural male heir, his kingdom would automatically pass over to the British. As a result, the Britishers wanted to claim Jhansi to which Rani Laxmi Bai cried out "Main apni Jhansi Nahi doongi". That is when the fight against the Britishers started. She would tie her kid around her chest and fight on horseback.   There are novels, articles, and movies made in honor of her bravery. Even Netaji named the women regiment of the Indian army as Rani Jhansi regiment. The famous statue of Rani Laxmi Bai. She is an inspiration for all her countrymen.
