In the episode, we chat with Adrian Dance, Principal Consultant at SRK Consulting, an independent and international multi-disciplined mining consultancy focused on providing advice and solutions to clients, mainly in the earth and water resource industries. They offer services from exploration to mine closure and are specialists and leaders in fields such as due diligence, technical studies, mine waste and water management, permitting, and mine rehabilitation. Adrian’s expertise is in metallurgy and mineral processing and he's worked for the likes of Mount Isa Mines, Highland Valley, and Bisha Mining before joining SRK back in 2010 and is going to be talking about technology in mineral processing, using XRT over traditional sorting methods, AI, SRK’s partnership with Base Metallurgical Labs and why grade engineering plays a critical role in resource extraction. KEY TAKEAWAYS The mining industry is slow to adopt new technologies, which can significantly improve efficiency and processing. Embracing advancements like X-ray transmissive sensing (XRT) and AI can lead to better decision-making and operational flexibility. Implementing pre-concentration techniques to reject waste material early in the processing stage can enhance the economics of mining operations. This approach allows for the removal of waste before it enters the processing plant, reducing costs and environmental impact. The concept of grade engineering emphasises the need to actively manage and improve the quality of ore being processed. By utilising various techniques, such as differential blasting and sorting, mining operations can optimise the value extracted from their resources. Future mining operations will require more flexible processing systems that can adapt to the variability of incoming material. This includes the ability to make real-time adjustments based on the characteristics of the ore being processed. There is a need for the mining industry to break down silos between different disciplines. By fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge, companies can improve overall efficiency and innovation in mining practices. BEST MOMENTS "What we really need to be considering now more than ever is improving the quality of the material coming in to really improve the economics." "We are losing expertise; we are not really getting a lot of traction of people coming to the industry." "If you take somebody outside of the mining industry and say, we're going to process 99.999% waste to get to that .001% valuable, someone would say, check your head." "The biggest thing we want to do is to avoid people from shooting themselves in the foot with this technology." Gem Resources PLC CEO Bernard Olivier takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through an operational update on the company's Gravelotte Emerald Mine. Olivier shared that Phase 1 of the project, which involved site and processing plant upgrades, has been successfully completed. He emphasised the 45% increase in processing capacity and the elimination of downtime due to breakdowns since the upgrades. Moving into Phase 2, Gem Resources is commencing mining activities at the Cobra open pit. Olivier highlighted the cost-conscious approach the company has taken, citing a 75% cost saving on in-house upgrades. He noted that the company remains debt-free and is focusing on ore extraction from defined zones based on analyses by ACA Howe International and SRK. Olivier stated, "We are very, very happy and encouraged by what we are seeing with our own mining operations." With active mining now underway, the company is transitioning from processing stockpiles to extracting high-value material directly from the mine. Diane Waghorne, founder of Tech Safety Lines (TSL), and instructor Matt Wehrle explain their approach to wind technician safety training. Allen and Joel had the pleasure of visiting their excellent facility in Dallas, Texas and discuss their impact on the industry. Drawing on expertise from fire and rescue professionals, TSL prepares technicians for high-stress rescue scenarios. The company's global recognition for providing top-quality training is evidenced by their GWO Training Team of the Americas Award. TSL initially began with selling the military compact descender and has recently had their SRK rescue kit certified to ANSI Z359.9 standards. I'm your host, Allen Hall, along with my co host, Joel Saxum. Today, we're diving into a crucial topic that affects every professional in our industry, and that's training. As the wind energy sector continues to grow rapidly, the need for standardized high quality safety training has never been more critical. GWO training has become the gold standard for ensuring that the wind industry professionals are equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to work safely and efficiently. Our guest today is Diane Waghorn, president and CEO of Tech Safety Lines, and Matt Wehrle, Tech Safety Lines instructor as well as a firefighter and paramedic. Tech Safety Lines is based in Dallas, Texas. And from their founding, Tech Safety Lines has been focused on safety through their start with the Military Compact Descender, to a series of safety products, and now with GWO training, Tech Safety Lines is a leader in wind energy safety. In fact, Tech Safety Lines recently received the GWO Training Team of the Year Americas Award. Diane and Matt, welcome to the show. Thank you for having us. This is exciting because Joel and I visited the tech safety lines facility a little while ago and we're just super impressed. I don't know how else to describe Joel Saxum: it, Joel. Yeah, blown away. It was a great facility. Yeah, from the time, we met Diane when we walked in to everybody that we ran into in the facility, shaking hands, Hi, nice to meet you. Who are you guys? Welcome in. Let's show you this. Let's show you that. Everything clean, ready to go. It was an impressive facility, to say the least. Diane Waghorne: Oh, thank you so much. We're very proud of our facility and we just welcome visitors and I'm glad you had a good time seeing our facility and allowing us the opportunity to share our instructors with you. It was just a great time. Allen Hall: Diane, I think we ought to start with A little bit of your history, because it is so unique to the industry. You really got your start after 9 11 with something called the military compact descender. You want to just touch on how that all got kicked off? Diane Waghorne: I'd be happy to, um, when 9 11 happened during that time period, I was a stay at home mom. And I've been a business major in college, but then when I had my children, I wanted to stay home with them. And when 9 11 happened, my son was in college and my daughter just turned 16 and got her driver's license. If I was ever going to go back into the workforce, that was a good time for me. And when I witnessed what happened with horror, as we all did, we just could not believe what we were seeing on our televisions.
This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' we're talking about the breakout film of Shah Rukh Khan, and also the one that set him on a trail of playing iconic negative characters: 1993's 'Baazigar' directed by Abbas-Mustan starring SRK, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Dalip Tahil, Johnny Lever, and Rakhee. Joining us to talk about Baazigar with Abbas and Urjita is writer, comedian and 90's cinema enthusiast Ashish Shakya. Ajay Bakshi (sweet and sexy) [Shah Rukh Khan] and Ria Banerji [Juhi Chawla] are two rival TV reporters and will stop at nothing to outdo each other (at work and at flirting). Eventually they team up to help a man seek justice for his daughter. A movie that is still relevant today, capturing the corruption and greed in media and politics. Hello, Hello, Hello! In our third (of three!) episodes on Queerness in Film this month, Dhruv invites Queer Academic & SRK and KJo Fanboy Cris Patrick (@limjaeseven) to discuss the one thing he wanted to talk about most, the thing that in many ways defines his Twitter Page - QUEER CODING, READING & CAMP SENSIBILITY IN BOLLYWOOD. We emphasize the words "Coding, Reading, and Camp Sensibility" most because our focus for this episode is on films that covertly (or, at least, less self-seriously overtly) position themselves as queer narratives about queer people. This includes all films written and directed (yes, even ghost-directed) by Karan Johar and Farah Khan. But for the sake of clarity, we focus most explicitly on Johar's work -- "Kal Ho Naa Ho" (2003) for Queer Coding, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" (2001) for Queer Reading, & "Student of the Year" (2012) vs. "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani" (2023) for Camp Sensibility. Listen to the full episode to first hear us talk at length about embracing Bollywood Camp (or Campy Bollywood) and its inherent Queer Sensibility. (We use Susan Sontag's "Jottings" on Camp and Jack Babuscio's essay on Camp and Gay Sensibility to form our argument.) And then about particular scenes from each of these films that help define what it means to Queer Code & Queer Read (or Queer Bait)! TIME CODES Embracing Camp Bollywood - [00:00 - 16:21] What is "Camp" (ft. Susan Sontag & Jack Babuscio) - [16:22 - 55:24] What's Your Problem if I Want To Queer Read? - [55:25 - 59:54] Queer Coding in "KHNH" - [59:54 - 01:26:53] Queer Reading in "K3G" - [01:26:53 - 01:52:45] Queer Sensibility in "SOTY" vs. "RARKPK" - [01:52:45 - 02:19:44] Planning a Future Farah Khan Ep - [02:19:44 - 02:32:00] Do hit 'Follow' on Spotify if you haven't already to help the podcast reach more people! Hello, Hello, Hello! In our first (of three!) episodes on Queerness in Film this month, Dhruv invites Queer Academic & SRK and KJo Fanboy Cris Patrick (@limjaeseven) to discuss the one thing he "avoided like the plague for the longest time as he himself came to terms with his identity" -- Queer REPRESENTATION in Bollywood. We emphasize the word "representation" because our focus for this episode is on films that overtly position themselves as queer narratives about queer people. This includes films that belong to, as Cris points out, the "Ayushmann Khurrana Social Messaging Industrial Complex" ("Chandigarh"), mainstream melodramas ("Ek Ladki..."), and incredible shorts buried within otherwise abhorrent Netflix anthologies ("Geeli Pucchi" in "Ajeeb Daastaans"). Listen to the full episode to hear us detail the history of Queer Representation, its aesthetics, and politics in Bollywood, especially before we tackle these three individual films -- two of which Dhruv and Cris are split on, one which they unabashedly adore. TIME CODES Introduction & Episode Overview - [00:00 - 13:31] History of Queer Representation, Aesthetics & Politics in Cinema - [13:32 - 41:39] "Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga" (2019) - [41:39 - 01:11:39] "Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui" (2021) - [01:11:39 - 01:41:41] "Geeli Pucchi" (2021) - [01:41:41 - 02:23:21] Other Favorite Queer Films in Bwood & The Future of Bwood Queer Cinema - [02:23:21 - 02:45:43] Do hit 'Follow' on Spotify if you haven't already to help the podcast reach more people! This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' Abbas and Urjita are revisiting the wild big budgeted sc-fi swing that Shah Rukh Khan took in 2011 with 'Ra.One' directed by Anubhav Sinha. Topics discussed include: The mismatch of good VFX and poor story, why Tamil films get sci-fi/fantasy right more than Hindi cinema, the broad stereotyping and broader comedy attempts. This was previously a Patreon-only episode that aired May 31st, 2023. Enjoy this unlocked episode for the holidays! We're headed to India to investigate a scandalous case of “did-they-didn't-they” between then-rising star, Priyanka Chopra, and married “King of Bollywood,” Shah Rukh Khan. After getting close filming Don and Don 2, tabloids and message boards got VERY suspicious that something was going on between SRK and PeeCee. We analyze the juicy evidence of their alleged affair, which many believe led to Priyanka's ostracization from Bollywood. We talk power dynamics, double standards, and ask ourselves what level of intimacy permits putting your hand in someone's pocket? **** Significant Lovers is a true-love podcast about historic and celebrity couples.
