Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Is it permissible to travel on a boat during Shabbat, if one boarded the ship before Shabbat? Clearly, one may not ride on a boat on Shabbat if the captain or crew members are Jews who do not observe Shabbat. Since the trip entails Shabbat desecration by Jews, it is forbidden to participate in the voyage. This is the ruling of Hacham Ovadia Yosef in his work Yehaveh Da'at (6:16) and in Yabia Omer (vol. 4, Orah Haim 43:6), as well as of Rabbi Shemuel Pinhasi (contemporary), in his work Ve'daber Davar (listen to audio recording for precise citation). Of course, as Rabbi Pinhasi notes, if the trip is necessary for the purposes of Piku'ah Nefesh – saving a life – then one may travel on the ship even if it is operated and maintained by Jews. If the boat is operated and maintained by gentiles, as is more often the case, under what circumstances may one travel on the ship on Shabbat? According to Halacha, if one wishes to embark on the trip for the purpose of performing a Misva, then he may board a ship at any point before Shabbat and remain on the ship on Shabbat. If, however, one travels for personal or recreational purposes, then Halacha forbids boarding a ship within a few days of Shabbat. According to some authorities, one may board a ship through Tuesday, whereas others allow boarding a ship through Wednesday. Rav Pinhasi writes that it is preferable, when possible, to follow the stringent position and not board a ship past Tuesday. If, however, one already made reservations or cannot find a suitable cruise before Wednesday, then he may follow the lenient view. Hazal enacted this prohibition forbidding boarding a ship within a few days of Shabbat because doing so will likely interfere with one's "Oneg Shabbat" – the enjoyment of Shabbat. It often takes several days to accustom oneself to sea travel and overcome seasickness, and so the Sages forbade boarding a ship too close to Shabbat in order to ensure that one will be comfortable and at ease on Shabbat. Interestingly, Rabbi Moshe Halevi (Israel, 1961-2001), in his work Menuhat Ahava (1:2), raises the possibility that this enactment of Hazal might not apply nowadays, when boats are very large and stable. Furthermore, most people who travel on cruises are accustomed to sea travel and thus do not become seasick. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Halachic authorities dispute this position and forbid boarding a ship after Tuesday (or Wednesday), unless one travels for the purpose of performing a Misva. Thus, people who plan a cruise must ensure that the ship leaves no later than Wednesday, and preferably no later than Tuesday. It is permissible to board a docked ship on Shabbat, provided that it will not be departing at all during Shabbat. However, if one travels on a ship on Shabbat and the ship makes a temporary stop at some point during Shabbat, he must ensure not to disembark from the ship, as it will be forbidden for him to reboard the ship again later before the ship departs. Summary: It is forbidden to travel on Shabbat on a ship that is operated or maintained by Jews. If the ship is run by gentiles, one may ride on the ship on Shabbat provided that he boards no later than Wednesday, and preferably no later than Tuesday. If he travels for the purpose of a Misva, he may board anytime before Shabbat. It is permissible to board a docked ship on Shabbat, unless it will be departing at some later point during Shabbat.

Veera has worked on a wide variety of successful films and television shows, such as, ‘Qala', ‘Hindi Medium', ‘Sardar Udham' and ‘Piku' to name a few. We discussed how Veera got into designing, why Indian cinema is known worldwide and more. Veera's Reccomendations: Bulbul Sardhar udham Piku

If you type Sumanto Chattopadhyay's name in Google, he is described as an actor. And by his admission, he has a lot of people asking him about his blink and miss role in the popular movie - Piku. If you type 'English Nut' on Youtube, you'll see Sumanto in another avatar - simplifying phrases and words and English. You'll also catch him interviewing the likes of Shashi Tharoor and Ruskin Bond. The page has a loyal following (and over 140k followers). The best part? It's not clickbait. No trends are being chased, and no trending music is being used. It's genuine, honest content - an oasis of sense in a sea of mindlessness. And, finally, he also happens to have a day job as one of India's most well-recognized Creative Chiefs. He's been a part of the Ogilvy system for most of his career and today is Chairman of ad agency 82.5, Ogilvy's second agency. "I wanted to delay working as much as possible" Advertising is (or was) the confluence of misfits, and Sumanto is no different. That is precisely why he didn't stop with one Master's Degree but has two. During his MBA, he studied advertising and realized he could make a career in it. Another aside - he won a slogan competition in college and won a trip to France to be a part of Bastille Day. The trip never came to fruition on account of an Air Traffic Controllers Strike. "I knew it wasn't a passing fad" Advertising, like any industry, has seen a world of change over the last decade. Established agencies are competing with hotshot freelancers and influencers for attention and have been accused of not keeping up with the times. Sumanto says he started the English Nut because he loved the English language and it gave him a chance to understand a new medium better. Going by the popularity of his Youtube channel, it looks like he has found an alternative career, leave alone understanding a new medium. "If the right role comes along, I'll jump into it" Movies and advertising have always been a kind of unholy matrimony —many advertising professionals dream of breaking through the film industry at some point. Sumanto's peers like Prasoon Joshi, Balki, Rensil D'Silva and Juhi Chaturvedi have already made the leap. But Sumanto is a little different - instead of directing or writing scripts, he's been in front of the camera. He's honing his craft and has taken acting lessons in this regard (you can see the rub-off effect in the English Nut videos). He also let me in on another secret - he's now working on a book (I reckon he finally got tired of writing forwards for other people's books). With no more rungs to climb on the advertising ladder, he says he's looking to take his acting more seriously. And we'll all wait to see how this script unfolds. PS: I mispronounced Sumanto's name for most of the podcast but being the person he is, he corrected me only in the end. Sorry for that, Sumanto and thanks for sharing your journey with us. This week, Bedroth is joined by his two youngest daughters, Flare and Luna. The kids have been very excited to do their first podcast, and after a lot of back-and-forth, decided to talk about one of their favorite games to play together: Pikuniku. The game, released in 2019 by Devolver Digital and developed by French-British indie collective Sectordub, stars a strange, red, ovoid creature named Piku (whose orange counterpart, Niku, is the avatar for player 2), as he takes on the megalomaniacal Mr. Sunshine, who wants to strip the land of all its resources, which he will use to hatch an even more nefarious plot. The single-player mode is a puzzle-platforming adventure, while the two-player mode includes both a cooperative adventure and competitive mini-games. The clever, lighthearted soundtrack by Calum Boen (sometimes known simply as Bo En)perfectly complimentes the simple, childlike art style designed by Arnaud De Bock (also the game's creator) and the quirky, humorous story by Remi Forcadel. But to recognize this year's March 14, with different kinds of P.I.s; private investigators of the 80's. Magnum PI pushed Tom Selleck to the top of fame when he starred as Thomas Magnum, private investigator staying in the mansion of Robin Masters and tormenting the butler, Higgins. All this while solving crimes while driving around in a fancy car. 1984's Riptide starred Perry King as Cody Allen and solved mysteries with his friends Nick and Boz, while driving around in a fancy car. Simon and Simon were two brothers who, while opposite in a lot of ways, were great at solving mysteries and driving around in a variety of fancy cars. Hardcastle and McCormick premiered in 1983 and starred the legendary Brian Keith as Judge Hardcastle who is trying to catch a bunch of criminals who escaped conviction with the help of a car thief named McCormick, who drives around in a stolen fancy car. Hunter set the stage for overly-macho guys who carry big guns, but sometimes have a female partner. Rick Hunter and his partner DeeDee McCall help to save Los Angeles, but don't always have the luxury of a fancy car. Spenser for Hire showed us that the great Robert Urich as Spenser, saving the day in Boston with his reliable and not yet Star Trekified Avery Brooks, while driving around in a fancy Mustang car. And this just scratches the surface. In our head cannon, they were all connected and worked for Angela Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher. What else can you do on Pi Day? How about some Pi-kus? Or maybe have a Pi-arty? Serve some Pi-themed food like Pi-napple or Pi-stachios. Whatever you do, have 3.14 times the fun on this fun Monday! Are you celebrating Pi Day? Do you have a crime that needs investigating? Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com
Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where today we're all about Irrfan Khan and PIKU (2015). We wanted to leave our Other Khan series on a high note and who better to guide us to the top than Irrfan and Deepika Padukone? Directed by Shoojit Sircar, this is unarguably one of Padukone's best roles and she goes toe-to-toe with not just the powerhouse that is Irrfan but also Amitabh Bachchan. But even if the movie belongs to Padukone, Irrfan is impossible to forget. He's a romantic lead with impeccable deadpan comedic timing. He's a star. He's the cherry on top. It's almost impossible to find a mediocre or bad performance by this man, who seemingly relished every single opportunity he got to be onscreen and his leaving has left a wound in not just Hindi or Indian cinema but world cinema. My next guest is Rajan "Piku" Uttamchandani, Founder and CEO of Esquire Financing Inc., the leader in Growth Stage Financing for SME's. I first met Piku back in 2011 when EFI hired Antidote for their brand strategy. What was quickly clear to me was how much EFI's mission of empowering SME's meant to him and his team. Through several strategic planning sessions with him and leadership team, we ended up identifying their ideal client, the SME-for-now who has aspirations of growing out of being an SME. And with that, the brand positioning we developed was Growth Stage Financing, something that Piku truly embodied as evidenced by the over 20,000 SME's EFI has funded and guided to growth and success over the past decade plus. In this episode, you'll hear about all of this and more as he talked about his vision for SME's and what he is working towards to continue enabling the growth of more SME's into big corporations that will ultimately lead to more growth for the country. If you're an SME in need of financing for your business, head on over to Esquire's website to get more information on how to apply.

The Torah commands in the Book of Shemot (12:18), “Ba'ereb Tochelu Masot” – “In the evening, you shall eat Masot,” introducing the obligation to eat Masa on the night of the 15 th of Nissan (the first night of Pesach). One fulfills this Misva only with Masa baked from one of the five principal grains. The reason behind this Misva, of course, is to recall how our ancestors were rushed out of Egypt after having been held there as slaves for over two centuries. The miraculous redemption unfolded so quickly that they did not have time to prepare adequate provisions, and so they baked unleavened Masa, and we commemorate the speed of the redemption by eating Masa. This obligation applies even after the destruction of the Bet Ha'mikdash. Although the Pesach sacrifice is not offered in the absence of the Bet Ha'mikdash, the Torah obligation to eat Masa nevertheless remains binding. The obligation to eat Masa applies even to women, despite the fact that it falls under the category of “Misvot Aseh She'ha'zman Gerama” – affirmative commands which apply only at certain times (as one is obligated to eat Masa only on the night of the 15 th of Nissan). The Gemara establishes that women are included in the obligation of Masa based on the verse in the Book of Debarim (16:3) which mentions both the prohibition against eating Hametz and the Misva to eat Masa. That these two commands are mentioned in the same verse indicates that everyone bound by the prohibition of Hametz is included in the obligation of Masa. Therefore, since women are included in all Misvot Lo Ta'aseh (prohibitions), they are included also in the obligation of Masa. Tosafot (in Masechet Megilla) raise the question of why the Gemara needed to resort to this inference to establish women's obligation to eat Masa. The Gemara elsewhere states that women are required to hear the Megilla reading because “Af Hen Hayu Be'oto Ha'nes” – “they, too, were included in the miracle.” Haman's decree of annihilation threatened both men and women, and thus both the men and the women were saved by the Purim miracle. As such, both men and women must commemorate the miracle through the reading of the Megilla. By the same token, it would seem, as both the men and the women were miraculously delivered from Egyptian bondage, they should both be obligated to eat Masa to commemorate this miracle. Seemingly, then, even without a comparison between the prohibition of Hametz and the obligation of Masa, we would have known that women are included in the obligation of Masa. Why, then, did the Gemara need to infer this Halacha from the verse? Tosafot answer that the rule of “Af Hen Hayu Be'oto Ha'nes” establishes a requirement only Mi'de'rabbanan – by force of Rabbinic enactment. When it comes to eating Masa, women are required to eat Masa on Pesach on the level of Torah obligation, as the Gemara derives from the verse. One cannot fulfill the Misva of Masa by eating Masa which is forbidden for consumption, such as Masa produced from Tebel – grain which has yet to be tithed, and is thus forbidden. Since Halacha forbids eating this food, one cannot use it to fulfill a Misva. The Minhat Hinuch writes that an exception is the case of a patient suffering from a life-threatening illness who urgently requires food, and the only food available is Masa made from forbidden grain. This conclusion is based on the Shulhan Aruch's discussion (Orah Haim 196) regarding the recitation of a Beracha over forbidden food. The Shulhan Aruch writes that one who eats forbidden food may not recite a Beracha, because if he would, “En Zeh Mebarech Ela Mena'etz” – “he is not blessing [G-d], but rather blaspheming [G-d].” One cannot be credited with a Misva, pronouncing a blessing to G-d, if He does so in the context of a sin. However, the Shulhan Aruch rules that if one eats forbidden food in a case of Piku'ah Nefesh (concern for human life), where eating this food is necessary to prevent a threat to life, then the patient does, in fact, recite a Beracha. By the same token, the Minhat Hinuch writes, a patient in such a situation on the night of the 15 th of Nissan would fulfill the obligation of Masa with Masa made from forbidden grain. Since Halacha allows him to eat this Masa, he fulfills his Misva with this Masa, as well.
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
It is forbidden for Kohanim to contract Tum'at Met – the status of impurity that results from contact with a human corpse. The Halachic authorities addressed the question of whether it would be permissible for a Kohen to volunteer for an emergency medical corps, such as Hatzalah. A person working as an emergency medical responder is likely to come in contact with a human corpse, Heaven forbid. In light of this likelihood, is it forbidden for a Kohen to volunteer for such services? The Shebet Halevi (Rav Shemuel Wosner, contemporary) rules that a Kohen may volunteer for Hatzalah, as long as he exercises caution and tries to avoid contact with a human corpse. If he tries to avoid Tum'at Met, then it is permissible to join emergency ambulance services, and it would in fact be considered a Misva for him to do so. Of course, in situations where a Kohen's involvement could save a life, then he is certainly allowed and required to intervene, even if this poses the risk of becoming Tameh. Just as one may violate Shabbat and eat and Yom Kippur when this is necessary for Piku'ah Nefesh (saving a life), similarly, a Kohen may come in contact with Tum'at Met for the purpose of saving a life. The Hatam Sofer (Rabbi Moshe Sofer of Pressburg, 1762-1839) addressed the situation of a Jew who had passed away, and the coroner insisted on determining the precise cause of death. If the cause of death could not be definitively determined through an external inspection, then the coroner would order an autopsy. As it turned out, the only available physician who was capable of determining the cause of death was a Kohen. The Hatam Sofer ruled that the Kohen was allowed to – and in fact should – inspect the body in order to prevent the autopsy. This situation, the Hatam Sofer explained, was no different than that of a "Met Misva," where a Kohen is the only person available to bury a body, in which case he is allowed, and even required, to perform the burial. Here, too, the Kohen is needed to ensure the body's immediate burial and avoid disgrace, and therefore he should inspect the body, even though he would then become Tameh. These Halachot should remind us of the need for Kohanim to consult with Rabbis on all matters involving situations of possible contact with a corpse, to determine when it is forbidden, permissible, or even obligatory to come in contact with a corpse.Summary: It is permissible – and even a Misva – for a Kohen to serve on an emergency ambulance corps, provided that he exercise care to try and avoid contact with human corpses. If a body needs to be inspected to determine cause of death and thereby avoid an autopsy, and the only available doctor to perform the inspection is a Kohen, he is allowed and even urged to inspect the body, even though he would thus become Tameh.

Solution pip install coverage==5.6b1 As of 5.6b1, coverage knows where third party code is and doesn’t measure it. Super awesome Also, it’s still beta. Deadpendency is a similar thing, but tells you about the health of the packages you depend on. It’s a GitHub app that runs on PRs and commits. Let’s say someone has a PR that adds a dependency. The PR checks will include a health check of the new dependency. What’s more, on each commit or PR, all of your dependencies will be checked. Checks for: no recent releases (warn at 18 months, fail at 24 months) no recent commits (warn at 12 months, fail at 18 months) few yearly commits (warn at 2) archived repository (fail) repository is a fork (warn) package deprecated (fail) single recent author (warn) Everything is configurable Temporary problems: only supports requirements.txt and Pipfile, for Python Kinda need it to support pyproject.toml, maybe setup.py I’d like to be able to just run this on a project without having to have a commit or push trigger it, to try it out. I’ve got some CI tools that allow that. Maybe it’s common for them to not. not sure. Also be neat if: it did the snyk checks for at least security and maintenance on the dependency. We hear Amitabh Bachchan even before we see him in Shoojit Sircar’s latest directorial Gulabo Sitabo (https://www.thequint.com/search?q=Gulabo+Sitabo) (streaming on Amazon Prime Video). Huffing, panting , a slight groan before he stretches his slouching body to take a bulb out of its socket. What he does with it we get to know in the next scene and why he did it is clear subsequently. Big B, who has a prominent nose and beard, initially grabs our attention but then makes us forget about his towering star quality as he melts into the role of a rapacious old man who someone refers to as “laalchi” in the first few minutes of the film. Avik Mukhopadhyay’s camera moves slowly, taking in the sights and sounds of Lucknow and Juhi Chaturvedi’s (https://www.thequint.com/search?q=Juhi+Chaturvedi) writing marinated in local flavours keeps getting better. Be it Piku, October or Vicky Donor Shoojit Sircar films the everydayness of life with avid pleasure. In this one too he tries but is unable to hold our attention for as long as he would like. But that doesn’t take away from the dark solid core of the film and the statement it makes on insatiable greed and the ephemeral quality of youth. Gulabo Sitabo has its moments, the characters and their eccentricities stay with us but how much undivided attention can it command when the going gets slightly tedious? Tune in for the full review! “Main tha, main hoon aur main hi rahunga” — this dialogue from the film Haider strikes a tragic chord as we bear the news of Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan's death.Although he bid an untimely farewell at the age of 53, in Mumbai's Kokilaben hospital, after battling a colon infection, one cannot describe enough the kind of indelible impression that Khan has left during his 30-year-long career, on fellow Bollywood and Hollywood actors and cinephiles alike.Khan as Maqbool or as Paan Singh Tomar or as Roohdar in Haider or as Ashoke Ganguli in The Namesake or as Rana Chaudhary in Piku or as Champak Bansal in his last release Angrezi Medium — they're not just memorable characters but an ode to his malleability as an actor. In this podcast we gloss back at the time and life of Irrfan Khan and try to dig deeper behind the actor's mask. Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly, has criticized the decision of the Union Home Ministry which had downgraded the security cover level of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi from ‘Z+' to ‘Z' category. In a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah, the MLA from Nazira Constituency called the current government “vindictive” and blames the government for withdrawing security cover of those who are critical of the BJP. Singer Zubeen Garg from Assam, who has been participating in anti-CAA agitations in the state, has vowed to not shave until CAA is scrapped. The cut-off date for those to be given citizenship in India has been fixed at, on or before 31st December 2014. The Awful and Awesome is back this week to give you a dose of the latest pop cultural updates. Rajyasree and Abhinandan take you through three Hollywood trailers, two films (A Quiet Place and October), the National Awards and Beyonce's performance at Coachella.Starting with ‘A Quiet Place', the duo believed it wasn't half as good as the trailer promised. Regardless, both Sen and Sekhri did appreciate the skill required to direct and act in a horror film with minimum dialogue. Abhinandan says, “I won't say I hated it but when you take up such a difficult job, you have got to be super brilliant to pull it off.”Then we have Sen reviewing Shoojit Sircar's ‘October' alone because Abhinandan has pledged to not watch a Varun Dhawan film again (the last Dhawan film he watched was ‘Judwaa 2', that must explain it). Sircar's direction and Juhi Chaturvedi's writing is back after Piku in this film. Dhawan plays a grumpy and disgruntled hotel trainee, Dan. When one of his fellow trainees goes into a coma after an accident, he suddenly finds a purpose in life. Sen finds it difficult to relate to this unusual obsession but liked the way Sircar portrays Delhi. Commenting on Varun's acting, she says, “He has acted better than he has acted before.”Rajyasree and Abhinandan also discuss the National awards, which started off with understandable awardees such as Newton for best Hindi film and Baahubali for best action, direction and special effect. But Sridevi getting the best actor female award for Mom, according to the two, reeked of sentimentality.Moving on, both our reviewers were highly impressed with the trailers of ‘The Wife' starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce, and ‘Can you ever forgive me?' starring Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant. For the former, Sekhri says, “It is one of the most compelling trailers I have seen in a long time. Think it is going to be great. I hope it is not like ‘A Quiet Place' where the trailer was 20,000 times better than the film.”However, the two were quite unhappy with the trailer of ‘Solo', next in the series of Star Wars. A new Star Wars film every year is a ‘money-making machine for Disney', feels Sekhri.Sen then discusses Beyonce's performance at Coachella and how this was the first time since 1999 that a black woman had headlined the fest. But that wasn't the only reason why Coachella was making news. Philip Anschutz, the owner of Coachella's parent company, is, in fact, a Republican donor and a huge supporter of anti-LGBT groups. Which has been all over the news lately. Regardless, Beyonce's two-hour-long power-packed performance, in which she went through five outfit changes (and also nail polish changes), was definitely worth a watch.Listen up now for all this and more at The Awful and Awesome, and as Sen rightly said, “Pay for free news and better jokes”.
