What would it take to transform dementia care?  While a lot of hope and money is being put into new monoclonal amyloid antibodies like lecanemab, the evidence is that while they are great in reducing amyloid in the brain for those with early Alzheimer's disease, the effects are at best modest in slowing down the decline in cognition and function (more to be said on that in an upcoming podcast). In order to truly transform dementia care we need to think much broader than the amyloid hypothesis.  So on today's podcast we invite four brilliant individuals to talk about their perspective on how to change how we as a society and health care system partner with individuals with dementia. These amazing guests include: Susan McFadden, PhD, retired professor emerita (psychology and gerontology) at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, an experienced researcher and practitioner in the field of dementia, and creator of the Fox Valley Memory Project. Her most recent book is Dementia Friendly Communities: why we need them and how we can create them  Anne Basting, PhD, a MacArthur Genius Grant awardee and professor (English/Theatre), University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.  She created TimeSlips which we talk about in our podcast.  Her most recent book is Creative Care: a revolutionary approach to dementia and elder care  Abhilash Desai, MD, geriatric psychiatrist, adjunct associate professor in the department of psychiatry at University of Washington School of Medicine, and poet!  He wrote a book titled “Psychiatric consultation in long term care” that has a strengths based approach to staging dementia (how cool is that) Judy Long, MDiv, BCC, palliative care chaplain and educator at UCSF and caregiver.  She directs UCSF MERI's patient, family, and clinician support with classes and consultation on resiliency, well-being, and grief. We discuss the importance of viewing individuals with dementia from a lens of resilience, the importance of creative engagement (as noted in Anne and Susan's wonderful article on this subject), the role of collaborative care, and what we can do to improve inclusivity for individuals with dementia in our community and health care systems.

Welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast about the bitter, the sweet and the bittersweet of life for classical musicians when the music suddenly stopped. Hosted and produced by me, Cliodhna Ryan, a violinist, it's an intimate and heart-warming exploration of the human spirit. My guest in episode thirteen is oboist Dan Bates, my colleague in the Irish Chamber Orchestra. After an initial sense of exhilaration in the first few weeks of lockdown, Dan shares his experience of a crushing depression, the treatment he was offered, and the impact this had on him. His sweet memory is of the three chickens he reared; Anastasia, Garbo and Clemmie Bunting. His bitter was witnessing the effect of lockdowns on his Mum. This conversation was recorded in September 2021. Daniel Bates (MA CANTAB, FRSM, FTCL, ARAM, AGSMD) is principal oboe with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia and co-principal oboe of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Previously, he also held the principal oboe position with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at the Sage, Gateshead. He has played guest principal for all the major UK orchestras as well as various international orchestras such as the National Orchestra of Colombia, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. As a session musician, he has recorded for numerous pop acts and films, including the Harry Potter franchise and for Barbra Streisand, Mary J Blige, Rihanna and Stevie Wonder. Born in London, Daniel attended the Purcell School of Music. He was subsequently offered scholarships to every music college in the country and chose to study at the Royal Academy of Music under Celia Nicklin and Dougie Boyd. This was followed by a music scholarship to study at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he read Music and the History of Art. He has performed solo concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Brasov Filharmonica, the Turin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the English Chamber Orchestra. Solo recitals include venues such as the Wigmore Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Usher Hall and the Purcell Room. Internationally, he has given solo recitals in venues such as the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and at various European festivals partnered with musicians of international renown including Jörg Widmann, Elizabeth Leonskaya, Joan Rodgers and Anthony Marwood. As an actor, having studied classical acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, his credits include the title role in The Picture of Dorian Gray (Vienna's English Theatre), Fedotik in The Three Sisters (alongside Kristen Scott Thomas and Eric Sykes in the West End) and Adrian Green in Casualty (BBC TV). Daniel is the founder and Artistic Director of FitzFest (www.fitzfest.co.uk), a community chamber music festival, based in Fitzrovia, central London. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjarding MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio audio described theatre reviews. This time Vidar was reviewing the longest running Christmas show in English Theatre history, ‘The Snowman' at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre with live audio description by Julia Grundy and Caroline Smith. This is the theatre production of the classic film directed by Dianne Jackson and produced by John Coates which was first shown on Channel 4 on Boxing Day 1982. Based on Raymond Brigg's much-loved book and featuring Howard Blake's classic song Walking In The Air, this enchanting live show has thrilled audiences throughout the world since first appearing on stage over twenty-five years ago, going on to become the West End's longest running Christmas show. When a young boy's snowman comes to life on Christmas Eve, the two set off on a night-time quest for adventure. They meet Father Christmas, dancing penguins, reindeer and crowds of The Snowman's friends, but will they escape evil Jack Frost and get back home for Christmas morning? Vidar began by metaphorically taking Toby ‘Walking in the Air' as the famous song by Harold Blake goes and he explained to Toby how a show like The Snowman, which is purely a magical Christmas dance production with no dialogue at all apart from Farther Christmas going ‘Ho, Ho, Ho' was brought to life to him through the well crafted audio description by Julia Grundy and Caroline Smith.   Sadly due to Covid restrictions there was not the opportunity of a touch tour to explore some of the 60 costumes that are used in the production including 11 alone for The Snowman.  As Vidar is a real fan of anything to do with Christmas ‘The Snowman' always features on his Christmas theatre wish list and hopefully next year when the longest running Christmas show in English Theatre returns to the Birmingham Rep there will be the opportunity for blind and partially sighted patrons to go on a touch tour to explore the costumes, props and the set of this magical production too.  (Image shows RNIB logo. 'SCALE (Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency) is a national round table for the arts and culture sector to mobilize around the climate emergency. A few months ago, you and I, and a few others were all having the same realization that while there was a lot of important work and projects happening at the intersection of arts and sustainability in Canada, there lacked some kind of structure to bring this work together, to align activities, to develop a national strategy, and to deeply, deeply question the role of arts and culture in the climate emergency and activate the leadership of the sector in terms of the mobilization that needs to happen in wider society. Career:As a stage actor, he has half a century's experience of working in theatres up and down the British Isles, and in English-speaking productions overseas. He took part in the first national tour of Godspell, and played in Julius Caesar and in Murder in the Cathedral at Chichester Festival Theatre. Other UK regional theatres where he has performed include Derby Playhouse and the Octagon Theatre, Bolton. For twenty years he was the Casting Director for The English Theatre of Hamburg and has cast over fifty plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Arms and the Man, Candida, Blithe Spirit, The Caretaker, Private Lives and The Circle, as well as the plays of LaBute and David Mamet. As a cabaret singer he has performed with his singing partner Francoise Geller in the UK and elsewhere. He has composed music and lyrics for productions such as The Circle, Educating Rita, When the Reaper Calls, Over the River, Through the Woods and April in Paris.[4]His first film job, in Arabesque, required him to play a scene with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren. On television he has been a presenter on Play School, he played Inky in two series of Chips' Comic for Channel 4 and he spoke the first line in the first episode of Byker Grove. Griffin has worked as a dialogue coach on Byker Grove and Kavanagh QC. Through doing radio drama he realised that he could display great versatility with his voice alone, accessing a greater range of parts than would otherwise be possible. (For instance, in the late 'sixties when well into his twenties he took over the part of Billy the eldest grandson in The Dales, formerly Mrs Dale's Diary, who had previously been played as a boy with an unbroken voice, and played him till the serial ended.)He 'got in on the ground floor' when audiobooks started to be recorded. For many years he has been a voiceover specialist and has recorded nearly eight hundred audiobooks, mostly unabridged.[9] The subjects have been as varied as Homer's Odyssey, Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and novels by H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, as well as more modern writers like Hilary Mantel and Melvyn Bragg. Also many titles in the Golden Age of Murder series for the British Library, and non-fiction titles such as Elegy: The First Day on the Somme, and Breakfast is a Dangerous Meal by Terence Kealey, among many others. AudioFile Magazine wrote: "Griffin is not just a narrator, but an artist of the Spoken Word. He is in the top five of the most borrowed audiobook narrators in the world."[10] In 2015-2016 his 2015 reading of Kate Ellis 's The Death Season was the sixth most borrowed adult audiobook from UK public libraries, as reported by the Public Lending Right office. His more unusual audio recordings include having been the courteous voice advising alighting passengers to "Mind the gap, please" on the London Underground. In 2017, Griffin was appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List "For services to People with Sight Impairment".PublicationIn 2020, Griffin published his memoir Speaking Volumes.ALL CONTENT IS HAS COPYRIGHT PROTECTION! How do you juggle multiple skillsets? How do you keep your skills sharp? Joining the conversation on Cue To Cue this week is Performer/Fight Director/Intimacy Professional Siobhan Richardson who advises us to always reassess and rebalance on what makes us happy, not what other people think you should be.  Are you suffocating because you're selecting what you should show the world? Are you being the fullest version of yourself? Release yourself from those shackles! You can be more than one thing at a time and still find fulfillment. You can enjoy and thrive in the diversity of your passions! In this episode: How breaking the shackles from the expectations of others allowed her to thrive in different forms of art and creativity How ballet triggered her journey in movements arts to discovering stage combat and scenes of intimacy The importance of points and pathways in embodying the required movements for scenes of violence The impact of communication in knowing if someone is in trauma response versus being uncomfortable with scenes of intimacy A little about Siobhan: Siobhan Richardson is an award-winning actor/fighter/singer/dancer, Fight Director and Instructor, and Intimacy Director and is a pioneer voice in the Canadian Theatre Industry regarding Intimacy in Performance.  She is the preferred Fight Director and Instructor for a number of theatre companies, actors and directors, and a certified Fight Director with Fight Directors Canada. Stage combat teaching has, likewise, taken her across Canada, the USA and Europe. She has taught at international events such as the “Paddy Crean International Art of the Sword Workshop”, “The World Stage Combat Certification and Teacher’s Conference”, “Fight Directors Canada's National Workshops”, and the “Nordic Stage Fight Society's Summer Workshops”. In 2009, she received a “Chalmers Arts Fellowship Award” from the Ontario Arts Council, which allowed her to travel to Washington (DC), England and Sweden to study with some of the world's foremost Fight Directors: Brad Waller, Jonathan Howell, Tim Klotz and Peppe Östensson. She has completed three separate teaching tours of Europe which included Sweden, Norway, Estonia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Germany and France. Siobhan's approach to teaching stage combat draws parallels to the actor’s process in order to connect fight technique to the characters objectives, obstacles and tactics. From a physical perspective, her classes examine structure and biomechanics to prevent injury, while expanding physical vocabulary. She had been teaching Intimacy extensively across Canada for the 2.5 years before Pandemic, travelling from Vancouver to Halifax to teach this work, in professional and amateur settings, and in educational institutions. She has also shared these techniques across the United States and in Europe. She is the first certified Intimacy Director in Canada (Intimacy Directors International), was the first ACTRA “Intimacy Coordinator” contract and the first Intimacy Coordinator contract at Ubisoft. Her work as a fight director and/or intimacy director has appeared at The Shaw Festival, the National Arts Centre Indigenous Theatre and English Theatre, The Stratford Festival, Native Earth Performing Arts, Tarragon Theatre, Factory Theatre, Soulpepper, Canadian Musical Theatre Projects, The Grand Theatre (London, ON), Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company, Young Peoples’ Theatre, Starvox Entertainment, and Coal Mine Theatre, to name a few. Meanwhile, she continues to perform as an actor/fighter/singer/dancer, most recently Faking It (#canadaperforms, NAC), The Penelopiad (Grand Theatre, London, ON) and A (musical) Midsummer Night’s Dream (Driftwood Theatre). When at home, she and her partner, Matt Richardson, teach stage combat (private lessons, workshops for actors, and workshops in schools). In the 2013-2014 school year, Burning Mountain was on the Ontario Arts Council’s “Artists in Education” roster, a program that subsidizes professional artists in high schools. In 2011, they won the Stage Combat Competition at CombatCon (Las Vegas), and later shot their scene “Trespasser” for film. Always infusing Joyfulness and Curiosity into the work, Siobhan is dedicated to the growth and development of the art forms, the artists and the workplaces. She builds upon current practices, inspired by historical sources, drawing upon a variety of styles and approaches, infused with some science and developing ideas. Her approach to teaching movement arts draws parallels to the actor’s process in order to connect movement technique to the characters objectives, obstacles and tactics. From a physical perspective, her classes examine structure and biomechanics to prevent injury, while expanding physical vocabulary. She endeavors to foster and support a vibrant and healthy artistic community, and to help performers around the world connect more through their bodies to continually grow as storytellers and joyful co-workers. Celebrated theatre-maker Robert Lepage returns to the NAC with an autobiographical journey through his childhood in a Quebec just beginning to awaken to its own promise. Unable to memorize a poem he must recite, Lepage uses the “memory palace” technique, assigning stanzas to the familiar rooms of his childhood home. Incendiary Canadian playwright Brad Fraser (Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love) makes his long-awaited return to the NAC with Kill Me Now, a gritty black comedy leavened with profound humanity. Widower Jake Sturdy cares for his severely disabled teenage son Joey until unexpected news leads to an astonishing role reversal. Devastatingly funny and defiantly unsentimental, Kill Me Now finds hard truths and irreverent laughter in every limb, joint and thought in the hopelessly fragile human body. “Funny and brutal and honest. But it is also moving, deeply emotional, and ultimately harrowing.” STAGE REVIEW (LONDON, UK)

The ghosts of the Donnellys return to tell their side of things. A raucous, wall-of-sound rock opera, Vigilante tells the explosive true tale of a ruthless Irish immigrant family and an entire town bent on revenge. Based on the unsolved 1880 massacre of Ontario's notorious Donnelly family, Vigilante is a stomping, swaggering and compulsively watchable story about frontier justice. This outlaw offspring of Sweeney Todd and The Threepenny Opera walks the razor's edge – aggressively inventive, visually stunning and absolutely electrifying. Vigilante marks the return of Edmonton's astonishing Catalyst Theatre (Nevermore), following major tours to London and New York. “I saw this piece twice: once in Fort McMurray, and again in Edmonton after Catalyst had returned from the off-Broadway run of their original production Nevermore. I loved both iterations but the steampunk style and pulsing fury of the music was deep in my bones by the second viewing. Now to see it again will satisfy a craving that I've had ever since.” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre “History — Canadian history! — doesn't just rock, it comes at you with an aggressive and explosive energy in the thrilling new rock ‘musical' from Catalyst Theatre.” - THE EDMONTON JOURNAL

The writing is clever and the performances are profound. And, having a pre-schooler at the time I saw the show, Sarah Jean's epic little girl tantrum made me cringe with delight!” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre

A sweeping drama of personal and political ambition follows soon-to-be Premier Joey Smallwood – the self-described “Last Father of Confederation” – as he propels the Dominion of Newfoundland into union with Canada in 1949. Both saint and sinner, the charismatic, controversial Smallwood is hounded every step of the way by witty, booze-soaked reporter Sheilagh Fielding – his intellectual equal and lifelong nemesis. With a crackling narrative, sultry jazz score and a cast of forty characters, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams is an epic and expansive retelling of a defining Canadian story. “My collaborator Robert Chafe started working on Wayne Johnston's epic in 2009. It was a nearly impossible task – a story spanning 25 years with the most unlikely hero and villain combined in one man as ever landed in our collective history. This production debuted in January 2015 and I'm really proud to bring it to our national stage.” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre “Artistic Fraud is one of the most innovative and exciting theatre companies in Canada. The set design and staging were kinetic, memorable, elemental. Desks, chairs, walls, and actors slid and curved into place like perfectly thrown curling stones – like the stage floor was made of smooth ice. I found myself wishing that Colony of Unrequited Dreams could be made into a mini-series.” - NFLDTXT.COM An Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland (St. John's) production in collaboration with Canada's National Arts Centre.

In this exhilaratingly original, multimedia one-man show, actor / comedian / radio broadcaster Tetsuro Shigematsu tells the dynamic story of an emotionally distant father whose legacy is felt beyond his lifetime. From the ashes of Hiroshima to swinging 1960s London, Akira's incredible personal history continues to influence two generations. Separated by language, culture and history, what truly keeps father and son apart are their similarities. Empire of the Son is a funny, emotional and deeply thoughtful portrayal of parent/ child relationships. Empire of the Son was recently nominated for five Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, including Outstanding Production, Actor and Direction. “I couldn't help but hear the incredible amount of talk this work generated after its sold out debut in Vancouver last year. West of the Rockies, it was on the top of the reviewers' year-end lists and when you see it, you'll know why. In Empire of the Son, the personal becomes magic.” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre

These two iconic moments span 25 of the most tumultuous years in modern history, fuelled by a generation of children with incredible influence due to their numbers, and to the advances of technology and communication. Award-winning writer, director and legendary solo-performer Rick Miller brings to life dozens of politicians, writers, activists and entertainers, effortlessly recreating each one. "Technology and the way we used it was key not only to the execution of it but also the themes" explains Miller. BOOM allows the audience to experience the global events as they unfold – the Cold War, McCarthyism, Beatlemania, Trudeaumania, JFK, MLK, Mao, Vietnam and several others. The various stories spiral into the “The Summer of Love”, and BOOM ends as it began – with a new generation born into a new world order.

“Reading about theatre is a weirdly incomplete experience. Reading about other things is similarly incomplete but it doesn’t have to be the whole experience because if you read about it, you can get hold of it as well. Even with a poor representation of a picture – an artwork – you at least see what it looks like.” - Andrew Haydon This week we are taking a brief pause from our 'Responsibility' season. This is a bonus round from Berlin. Jana speaks with independent theatre critic, Andrew Haydon, about audiences, histories and European vs English theatre. This episode opens up the topics discussed on our show and examines them in a global context. Andrew is one of the few British theatre critics who regularly travels around Europe to see new work, and who is conversant in contemporary European theatre (and not just what happens on the British Isles), approaching it with a distinctly British, but never parochial, perspective. In his writing for The Guardian, Time Out, Exeunt Magazine, and in his respected blog Postcards from the Gods, Andrew has long championed unusual work, difficult work, and has often argued that the British theatre is unnecessarily conservative in terms of form and interest. "I always wonder what it would be like to get a hardcore German theatre theoretician in to watch a load of the really hardcore naturalistic productions that still exist in Britain but just tell them “it’s all a concept” and they are not allowed to go “oh, you’re just being British”. They have to believe that it’s a metaphor. How that would read? I’m sure there’s actually some really creative thinking if we didn’t all just go “urgh! It just looks like a room. It’s meant to look like that.” If we actually thought about it more creatively. There’s probably better ways we could understand what’s going on. There is craft in the way these things are put together, obviously. But craft and possibly not philosophy." - Andrew Haydon Discussed in this episode: 'Live art' and its global history, stage metaphor, the white male default, new writing and authorship, national identity, what defines a 'national theatre history', the demographics of theatre goers, the importance of arts writing, the fallibility of the critic and can theatre ever just be bad? "It is interesting where the history counts. If it’s a history of ‘English Theatre’, if you’ve got a director like Katie Mitchell (who I think did make a domestic production last year but made five or six bits of work elsewhere) does one try to include these because they’re a British director? Or do you include the infinite number of stagings of Martin Crimp, Denis Kelly and Simon Stephens’ plays? Do they count because they’re British playwrights? I don’t think it’s particularly futile to limit a theatre history to a national border." -Andrew Haydon Enjoy and stay tuned: we have more exciting and intellectually rigorous conversations to come. Next fortnight we will return to the topic of Responsibility.
