Government help during the pandemic did more than help people get through a tough time. It also helped lift people out of poverty. But unfortunately, things have gone back to the way they were for some. And it's gotten worse for others. The high price of food, energy and rising inflation is leaving people behind. That's why several groups decided to hold community conversations and roundtable to discuss the cost of living crisis in Nova Scotia. Dorothy Halliday, Director of Community Cares Youth Outreach in Sydney Mines was involved. As was Leila Sarangi, National Director of Campaign 2000. The key to ending poverty is to listen to the people involved and exert that political pressure from the inside out.

This week on the show, rabble contributor Doreen Nicoll speaks to Leila Sarangi, national director of Campaign 2000. Campaign 2000 is a network of national, regional and local partner organizations who have come together to increase public awareness of the levels and consequences of child and family poverty in Canada. Each year, the organization releases a national report card, measuring the progress – or lack of progress – of reaching the goal of eliminating poverty. Last month on the site, national politics reporter Stephen Wentzell detailed the government's announcement that it would begin the recovery of Canada Emergency Response Benefits (or, CERB) from recipients that the CRA considers ineligible. In response to this announcement, Campaign 2000 released a statement saying that these clawbacks will have the gravest effect on mothers – in particular, those with multiple children living on an earned income of $33,000 a year. Today, Sarangi joins Nicoll to talk about this statement and also about how poverty is a systemic issue - brought on by colonialism's ongoing legacy in Canada. Solutions to poverty must look at things through a lens of dismantling racist systems in place. Rani Laxmi Bai was named Manikarnika Tambe and was nicknamed as Manu. She is also known as Jhansi Ki Rani, the queen who was fought against the British without any fear. She was born on 19th November 1828, in the town of Varanasi. Her father was Moropant Tambe and her mother Bhagirathi Sapre. Her father was the commander to the King of Peshwa, Bajirao of Bitoor district. The Peshwa called her "Chhabili" for her playful nature. She was educated at home and learned sports with her friends Nana Sahib and Tatya Tope like martial arts, horse riding, sword fighting, and more. She always preferred traveling on the horseback to using a palanquin. Her horses included Sarangi, Pavan, and Baadal. She was married to the King of Jhansi and that's when she became Rani Laxmi Bai from Manikarnika. Later she adopted a boy and named him Damodar Rao. After the death of the King, the British Raj officers applied the Doctrine of Lapse, a policy according to which if any Indian ruler dies without leaving a natural male heir, his kingdom would automatically pass over to the British. As a result, the Britishers wanted to claim Jhansi to which Rani Laxmi Bai cried out "Main apni Jhansi Nahi doongi". That is when the fight against the Britishers started. She would tie her kid around her chest and fight on horseback. There are novels, articles, and movies made in honor of her bravery. Even Netaji named the women regiment of the Indian army as Rani Jhansi regiment. The famous statue of Rani Laxmi Bai. She is an inspiration for all her countrymen. As always, you can find our longer notes on our blog: wordsandactions.blog. In this episode, we discuss job interviews. In the introduction, Bernard mentions the finding that employers give lower ratings to candidates who interview on video. This is reported in Blacksmith, N., Willford, J. C., & Behrend, T. S. (2016). Technology in the employment interview: A meta-analysis and future research agenda. Personnel Assessment and Decisions, 2(1), Article 2. Available at: https://scholarworks.bgsu.edu/pad/vol2/iss1/2 The first part of the episode also features a short interview with Dorottya Cserző, whose recently completed PhD thesis was on video chats. Her relevant publications are: Cserzo, D. (2016). Nexus analysis meets scales: An exploration of sites of engagement in videochat interviews. In Singh, J. N., Kantara, A., & Cserző, D. (eds) Downscaling Culture: Revisiting intercultural communication. Newcastle: Cambridge Scholars, pp. 337-365. Cserzo, D. (2020). Intimacy at a distance: Multimodal meaning making in video chat tours. In Thurlow, C., Durscheid, C., & Diemoz, F. (eds) Visualizing Digital Discourse: Interactional, institutional and ideological perspectives. Berlin: Mouton DeGruyter, pp. 151-169. As Bernard mentions during the interview, the surge in video interactions due to the Covid-19 pandemic has brought much well-meaning advice on Zoom backgrounds and the like (e.g. https://twitter.com/bcredibility), which in turn have spawned critical reflections: https://academicirregularities.wordpress.com, http://musicfordeckchairs.com/blog/2020/05/09/background/ In reply, Dorottya cites research on sound vs image problems in video chats: Rintel, S. (2010). Conversational management of network trouble perturbations in personal videoconferencing. ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, 304–311. https://doi.org/10.1145/1952222.1952288 Rintel, S. (2013). Video Calling in Long-Distance Relationships : The Opportunistic Use of Audio / Video Distortions as a Relational Resource. The Electronic Journal of Communication, 23(1 & 2). Still in the first part, we introduce the cooperative principle and conversational maxims (see glossary). The series Big Bang Theory includes lots of examples where the main character breaks one or several of those maxims, e.g. in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEM8gZCWQ2w Can you identify which maxim(s) he breaks? The second part of the episode features an interview with linguist Celia Roberts. (There is also a sociologist of the same name, and a colleague of one of the hosts once declared that he would like to supervise a PhD student who could be examined by both Celias.) As an emerita professor, she can look back on a number of projects and publications; the ones most relevant to the topic of job interviews are (in chronological order): Roberts, C. (1985). The Interview Game and How It's Played. London: British Broadcasting Corporation. Roberts, C., & Sarangi, S. (1999). Hybridity in gatekeeping discourse: Issues of practical relevance for the researcher. In Sarangi, S., & Roberts, C. (eds) Talk, Work and Institutional order. Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, pp. 473-503. Roberts, C., & Campbell, S. (2005). Fitting stories into boxes: Rhetorical and textual constraints on candidates' performances in British job interviews. Journal of Applied Linguistics, 2(1), 45-73. Campbell, S., & Roberts, C. (2007). Migration, ethnicity and competing discourses in the job interview: Synthesizing the institutional and personal. Discourse & Society, 18(3), 243-271. Roberts, C. (2011). ‘Taking ownership’: Language and ethnicity in the job interview. In Pelsmaekers, K., Rollo, C., Von Hout, T., & Heynderickx, P. (eds) Displaying Competence in Organizations: Discourse perspectives. Basingstoke: Palgrave, pp. 10-26. Roberts, C. (2013). The gatekeeping of Babel: Job interviews and the linguistic penalty. In Duchêne, A., Moyer, M., & Roberts, C. (eds) Language, Migration and Social Inequalities: A critical sociolinguistic perspective on institutions and work. Bristol: Multilingual Matters, pp. 81-94. [A summary by Ingrid Piller can be found here: https://www.languageonthemove.com/linguistic-penalty-in-the-job-interview/] In the interview, Celia refers to the notion of the ‘entrepreneurial self’, which was advanced both by Paul Du Gay and, in German, by Ulrich Bröckling: Bröckling, U. (2013). Das unternehmerische Selbst: Soziologie einer Subjektivierungsform. [The entrepreneurial self: Sociology of a form of subjectivation] Frankfurt a. M.: Suhrkamp. Du Gay, P. (1996). Organizing identity: Entrepreneurial governance and public management. In Hall, S., & Du Gay, P. (eds) Questions of Cultural Identity. London: SAGE, pp. 151-169 She also mentions the STAR structure for job interviews. This is indeed widely used and advice on it abounds online (e.g. at https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/interviewing/how-to-use-the-star-interview-response-technique). Celia uses a number of metaphors to talk about the interview process and the positions of interviewer and interviewee. One is that of the Roman god Janus, who is depicted with two faces looking in different directions. Unfortunately, the FAQ video that she mentions is not publicly available. The episode of “The Job Interview” that we analyse in the third part of the episode was broadcast on Channel 4 on 19 March 2018. In this Chaitime, we talk to vocalist Konark Sarangi (http://www.konarksarangi.com/). A devoted student of Indian Classical Music and Vocal artist who works on Social Issue based Musical projects. His musical videos Hausla Na Ruthe and Ghar Jaana Hai have met with critical acclaim. His first video “Ghar Jaana Hai” showcases the issue of Drought & Migration. The video has been well accepted in film festivals across the world with 23 official selections (Including Miami Beach Film Festival, Richmond International Film festival, Los Angeles Film Awards) and has won 6 Awards in various categories. His latest video "Hausla Na Ruthe" has the Orissa Super Cyclone as its backdrop. The cyclone struck the state of Odisha in 1999 causing large scale devastation killing around 50000 people. "Hausla Na Ruthe" depicts one such story of 'Charu Maa,' a super courageous woman from the village of Gundalba, Odisha who refused to give up and led a group of women to fight against nature's fury and restored an entire forest cover that got destroyed in the 1999 Orissa Super Cyclone. Konark started his musical learning under the able guidance of Shri Mahesh Kale in the San Francisco Bay Area. His quest for learning the highly rich traditions of Indian Classical music took him to the legendary Dhrupad vocalist, Padmashree Pandit Ramakant Gundecha from whom he learns Dhrupad gayaki. Konark has performed in various solo concerts in the US and has also performed as an accompanying artist in many classical / semi-classical concerts.

Welcome to Be The Change Puerto Rico Podcast. In this episode we take a look back at HR 856 of 1997-1998. We find that many of the arguments against Puerto Rico self-determination and Statehood are the same today, even when most, if not all of those arguments, including the Spanish language and Puerto Rico as the American Quebec arguments, have proven to be utterly false. We can't move forward if we do not know our past, and it is essential to know this if we are to be successful in formulating new strategies in order to advance in our struggle for equality and Statehood for our island of Puerto Rico and it's almost 4 million American citizens that reside therein.Music: Apollo 440, ''Crazee Horse,'' Enigma ''The Same Parents,'' Hooverphonics ''Sarangi,'' Digital Farm Animals ''Home,'' Westbound Train ''Check Your Time,'' Unkle ''Burn My Shadow,'' & Mansions on the Moon ''For Awhile.''Be The Change You Want To See In Puerto Rico and Get Involved. All inquiries write to: bethechangepr@gmail.com

Guest: Sathyu Sarangi Host: Larry Kaskel, MD Many of us remember the chemical disaster that occurred in Bhopal, India in December 1984. Twenty-five years after what many call the world's worst industrial disaster, estimates suggest more than 100,000 people, including children of survivors of the initial disaster, still suffer illnesses that are linked to this ongoing tragedy. Sathyu Sarangi arrived in Bhopal the day after the disaster, expecting to serve for a short time as a volunteer in the short-term relief efforts. Instead, he has spent the last quarter-century advocating for the allocation of proper health care, clean water and other basic necessities for disaster-affected people in Bhopal. Today, Mr. Sarangi is the managing director of the Sambhavna Trust Clinic in Bhopal, a vibrant clinic that provides free medical care, community health education classes and other vital services to nearly 25,000 individuals. As Mr. Sarangi explains, with many of the local hospitals struggling under the weight of corruption, inefficient management and a disinclination to care for disaster survivors and their children, Sambhavna offers the people of Bhopal hope for a better, healthier future. He joins host Dr. Larry Kaskel to share the story of the people of Bhopal and their ongoing struggle, and explains what we, as ...
