In this conversation, Saheb and Amit examine the three major structural dilemmas facing China's economy: a persistently low domestic consumption rate of around 40 percent of GDP, making China an outlier among large economies; the Chinese state's reluctance to adopt fiscal stimulus due to its ideological opposition to welfarism; and a sharp slowdown in real estate investment that has had ripple effects across the broader economy. They also discuss how China's enduring trade surpluses, particularly with the U.S., EU, and India are generating international pushback. Despite high trade volumes, Amit highlights the limited nature of Chinese investment in India, noting that economic outreach from China is driven less by genuine market interest and more by geopolitical calculations. The episode further explores why China's engagement with regions like Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia cannot substitute for the demand found in Western markets. The episode also looks at how India's large and growing consumer market could make it a prime destination for companies relocating under the China Plus One strategy, even if Chinese firms themselves remain reluctant to invest directly. Finally, the discussion draws a clear line between China's diplomatic messaging and its actual economic practices, revealing a gap that continues to shape global perceptions.Episode ContributorsAmit Kumar is a Staff Research Analyst at the China desk of the Indo-Pacific Studies Programme.

In 2024, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) held a panel discussion on Degrowth as part of their Centre for Ideas series. The panellists were Tommy Wiedmann (Professor of Sustainability Research), Bronwen Morgan (Professor of Law and member of NENA), and Sabrina Chakori (CSIRO researcher). The discussion was hosted by former Deputy Lord Mayor and author of Glimpses of Utopia, Jess Scully. The panel explored sustainability and the urgent challenge of ensuring human needs are met without compromising a sustainable and inclusive future. With the kind permission of UNSW Centre for Ideas, the recording of this panel discussion is now available to listen to on the Post-Growth Australia Podcast (PGAP). Tommy Wiedmann has been a supporter of PGAP since our early days in 2021, so it was great to hear him in his element, sharing his research, knowledge, and ideas on Degrowth. We really appreciate Tommy and panel host Jess Scully giving PGAP a shout-out towards the end of the talk. We hope to return the favour by sharing this insightful discussion, which serves as an excellent introduction to Degrowth for those new to the topic. It is encouraging to see Degrowth becoming an openly discussed subject in Australian universities. Tommy also wrote a very encouraging review for PGAP on Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/post-growth-australia-podcast/id1522194099). We warmly invite you to add your review. This will help to broaden our outreach and encourage new listeners. Please also feel welcome to contact us (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact) with your feedback or suggestions for future episode topics. Co-hosts Mark Allen (https://holisticactivism.net/) and Michael Bayliss (https://michaelbayliss.org/)share their thoughts on the panel discussion in the introduction and conclusion. For the most part, we align with the perspectives of the four panellists, but we also provide additional thoughts on how the Degrowth movement can incorporate concerns around population, which we briefly touch on in our commentary. For a more in-depth analysis, we encourage you to read the PGAP blog: “To populate or not to populate? How we can come together around the eternal debate of everyone's favourite vexed issue. (https://pgap.fireside.fm/articles/population)” We also encourage listening to two recent PGAP episodes on population, including Anne Poelina (https://pgap.fireside.fm/annepoelinapatron), who brings a First Nations' perspective to the debate, and Isaac Kabongo (https://pgap.fireside.fm/isaaceco), who brings a Ugandan/Global South perspective. Regarding the discussion on population, Tommy cited two particularly relevant scientific articles, which are well worth reading: Lamb, W. In this episode Gyani Amrik Singh explores the last pauri and the Sloke of Jap Ji Saheb. In this bani Guru Nanak provide a profound conclusion to the spiritual journey outlined in the text. The final Pauri emphasizes that by meditating on the Divine Name (Naam) and living a life aligned with truth and virtue, one attains liberation and fulfillment. It highlights the ultimate goal of merging with the Creator through selfless devotion and righteous living. The Slok, beginning with “Pavan Guru Pani Pita,” uses metaphors to describe the elements of nature as divine teachers: air as the Guru, water as the father, and earth as the nurturing mother. It underscores the interconnectedness of all creation and the importance of living in harmony with nature and divine will. Together, they inspire reverence for the Creator, gratitude for existence, and a life of humility and righteousness. The Divine sustains and nourishes all creation, and everything happens according to Waheguru Ji's command (Hukam). Guru Nanak highlights the importance of surrendering to this divine will and recognizing one's limitations in fully grasping the vastness of Waheguru Ji. Through devotion and grace, one can align with the eternal truth and find spiritual fulfillment. These pauris guide seekers toward humility, divine remembrance, and trust in the cosmic order.

He uses the metaphor of a forge, where discipline, patience, wisdom, and love serve as tools to shape a life centered on truth and divine awareness. The vastness of creation is described as infinite and beyond human comprehension, known only to the Creator. By listening to and contemplating the Divine Word (Shabad), one attains wisdom, steadfastness, and unshakable faith, gaining honor in the spiritual realm. Contemplating the Divine Name liberates the seeker from fear and doubt, uplifting not only themselves but also their family and others, guiding them toward liberation. These Pauris collectively highlight the boundlessness of creation and the transformative power of the Guru's teachings in attaining spiritual enlightenment.

In Part 5 of This Series of Jap Ji Sahib, we dive into Pauri 4 and 5, exploring the concept of Waheguru Ji as the eternal, unchanging presence in a universe bound by time. True love acts as a channel, helping us realize His connection with all creation. When He has already given us everything, what can we offer to receive His kindness? Through early morning meditation on His name and His gifts—life, happiness, and beyond—we deepen our connection and move toward spiritual liberation. This episode also emphasizes that He is self-illuminated, beyond human creation. By singing and listening to His praises, we welcome peace and happiness into our lives. True divine wisdom and Naad come through the Guru, so we pray for the Guru's guidance in establishing the Lord's name in our hearts, never to be forgotten. In this series on Jap Ji Sahib, Gyani Amrik Singh discusses the second pauri, delving into the concept of Hukam, or the divine will of Waheguru. He explains that the entire universe—every creature, galaxy, and force of nature—operates under Waheguru's command. Through Hukam, blessings, praise, honor, joy, sorrow, positive and negative energies, and all forms of life emerge and flow. Each soul's path, whether honored in His court or sent back to the cycle of life, unfolds through His will. Though Hukam is beyond full human comprehension, those who begin to understand it can transcend their ego and connect more deeply with divine wisdom. In this episode, Gyani Amrik Singh ji announces that he established a non-profit organization, The Guru Nanak Mission of USA in 2007. Now, in his private life, he is using this platform to promote Gurmat, as the sangat desires, while incorporating aspects of wellness in a meaningful way.In the second part of his series on Japji Sahib, he addresses a fundamental question raised by Guru Nanak: How can one live a truthful life and merge with Waheguru? Guru Nanak offers guidance, rejecting empty rituals like superficial bathing, silence without true inner peace, and the pursuit of worldly wealth, which can never bring lasting fulfillment. He teaches that the only way to live truthfully is by aligning oneself with Waheguru's Hukam (divine will), which has been in existence since the creation of the universe. If you are called to donate here is the link to do so: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=LSEQVBVWX5LV8

The IPCC report always comes as a splash for those in the climate movement, ringing the alarm bells ever more about our planet's awful condition. But who writes it? And who gets to write it? how do these influential documents and frameworks come about and how do those who write it, affect the narrative around climate breakdown? This week we are delighted to be joined by one of the leader authors for the latest IPCC report Yamina Saheb. We discussed how the IPCC reports get made and who gets to make it, the working conditions of the people writing it, how those most affected by current climate breakdown are cut out of the decision making processes. Yamina also updates us on the protests in France and how the Gilet Jaune and the climate movement are linked together. Sagar is a writer and journalist currently working with The Caravan. In this episode he discuss in detail about the ideas, legacy and pragmatism of Saheb Kanshi Ram. Kanshi Ram is one of the biggest name in the Dalit movement in India's political landscape. He launched the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1984, which went on to form the government in India's largest state, Uttar Pradesh on four occasions. To call Manyavar Kanshi Ram, only a politician would be very much of an understatement. He was a disruptor who dislocated the Indian political landscape and gave power to one of the most oppressed people in this country. Sagar discusses not only about the times when Bahujan politics was at its peak but also these bleak times when the entire foundation on which Kanshiram laid his ideas are on shaky grounds. What has worked, what has changed, and what can we learn from the past to understand our present better, we discuss it all in this episode. Lawmakers around the globe have spoken extensively about energy efficiency. However, there is an increasing interest in policy and academic circles around sufficiency: these are often labelled as demand-side measures or changes to individual habits that reduce our use of energy and natural resources. In this episode, we look into how governments and EU policy instruments are addressing sufficiency measures and to which extent they are successful or not. While Europe has made progress in unrolling technical energy efficiency measures, there is still a clear lack of sufficiency measures needed to tackle the climate crisis. Sufficiency efforts have often faced resistance as individual behavioural change is sometimes seen as a loss of quality of life, particularly for the most vulnerable consumers. This requires a fundamental change in the narrative, says this week's guest Yamina Saheb. Saheb is a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) latest report, senior Energy Policy Analyst at OpenExp and lecturer at Sciences Po in Paris. O Gurudev, give me peace, Give worthy feelings, worthy intelligence. Give mutual cooperation. Give purity to my heart. Let there be pure feelings in my mind. Let there be pure conduct by my body. May my speech be free of falsity and slander. May the sentiment of devotion increase. May my thoughts not be agitated by the ripening of innate karma. May my body and mind be healthy, May my worship be free of obstacles. May I remain in the presence of Saints and be filled with the sentiment of devotion. May I swim across the ocean of samsara, the ocean filled with passion, hate, change and fear. Let there be neglect for wicked persons and compassion for the destitute, Happiness among those of good conduct and friendship with good people. May buffoonery cease and may we delight in the words that lead across samsara [this world of changes]. May we be happy in the study of wisdom; May we keep our minds under control. May we have hope of refuge with the Satguru, May we have no fear of lust and other vices. May we ever yearn for self-awakening and have faith the the words of revelation. May the darkness of ignorance be destroyed; May the lamp of knowledge be lit. May the law of death be forgotten, and immortality be expanded. May there be no harm done to living beings through my words or my actions. May I never feel the least attachment to the objects of my senses. May there always be happiness and the absence of desire. May there be an end to the power of samsara, and a beginning to the knowledge of God. -- This is such a beautiful, eloquent prayer. It's something that one could ponder and recite each and every day for life. It's called the “Prar-thana-pan-chak se” by Rames-var-ananda Saheb, a guru or sadhu in a lineage associated with Guru Kabir and Sant Dharam Das.
