Staying true to his name, 'Abhay' - the Fearless one, a man who describes his life as a provocative journey and undauntedly wears his heart on his sleeves, it's our honour to have him on the podcast, "The Billion Dreams." Abhay Deol, a name that conjures up images of a brooding Devdas, a witty conman in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, or a carefree adventurer in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. But beyond the silver screen facade lies a man who defies easy categorization. Abhay Deol is more than just an actor; he's a thinker, a questioner, a seeker on a journey of self-discovery.Born into Bollywood royalty, Deol could have easily coasted on family fame. Instead, he carved his own path, shunning formulaic roles and gravitating towards those that challenged him and resonated with his soul. His filmography reflects a restless spirit, a constant exploration of human complexities and societal issues. But Deol's quest isn't confined to the film sets. He's an avid traveler, seeking inspiration and understanding in diverse cultures and experiences. He's a vocal advocate for mental health awareness, openly discussing his own struggles and encouraging others to break the stigma. Deol's persona is an intriguing blend of contradictions. He's reserved yet enigmatic, introspective yet fiercely opinionated. He's comfortable in his own skin, unfazed by the trappings of fame, and more interested in exploring the depths of human experience than basking in the spotlight. He's a man who walks his own path, guided by his own compass, and that's perhaps what makes him so compelling, both on-screen and off.Last seen together, sharing the screen for the drama series, 'Trial by Fire,' catch Ashish Vidyarthi & Abhay Deol in a candid tête-à-tête where they delve into the depths of the Indian film industry, dissect the role of fate, the price of bold choices, and the delicate dance between personal happiness and that of others. Brace yourself for a thought-provoking exploration of morality, artistic expression, and the power to craft your own life's narrative. This is more than a conversation; it's a journey into the hearts and minds of two extraordinary artists. FINALLY we 1) have as guest star the truly wise, witty, funny, and delightful Sal (twitter: @salandthebadpun) 2) dig into Bengali cinema 3) try to enact dramatic poses inspired by our subject matter (spoiler: one of us fails utterly) Suchitra Sen is a unique figure in Indian cinema: she's the sine qua non of Bengali films (no one woman is as critical to an entire body of a language cinema as she), she is highly regarded in both Bengali and Hindi cinema, she resolutely sculpted her professional image, and she walked away from films when she decided she was done and never looked back. We discuss four of her big films in both languages: Saptapadi, Agni Pariksha, Devdas, and Aandhi. Several of Suchitra Sen's Bengali films that we discuss are available on Youtube with English subtitles at excellent TommyDan55 channel: Chaowa Pawa (It Happened One Night (https://youtube.com/watch?v=MNdJAi3xj9w&feature=shares), Agni Pariksha (https://youtube.com/watch?v=rOcC8KZNOSc&feature=shares), Saptapadi (https://youtube.com/watch?v=xRQA9jmK_pI&feature=shares), and several others, including Deep Jele Jai (which Beth watched but does not have strong enough feelings about to add to the podcast discussion; tell her in the comments if you do! https://youtube.com/watch?v=sR682WolT7U&feature=shares). “College ka pyaar chalta hai kya?”
----- Rajinder Singh Bedi adapted Nikolai Gogol's short story, The Overcoat into Garam Coat and then further wrote a screenplay for a film by the same name. In his adaptation, Bedi moved quite far from the original, only taking the coat as a leitmotif. While Gogol's story revolves around a man's desire for a new coat, Garam Coat, the short story is a poignant story of a man who struggles between his own needs and his longing to fulfill his family's desires. The movie version, starring Balraj Sahani goes a few steps further and explores the ups and downs in the protagonist's married life. ----- Rajinder Singh Bedi was a pillar of the Progressive Writers Movement. After the partition he moved to Bombay where he made his mark as a dialogue writer, screenplay writer and director. He wrote dialogues for several of Hindi film classics including Mirza Ghalib, Devdas, Abhiman, Garam Coat, Daag, Anupama etc. He also directed Phagun, Dastak etc. #hindistory #hindikahaniya #rahindersinghbedi #progressivewriters #urdukahaniyan #afsane --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/storyjam/message

If you've ever wondered why Sanjay Leela Bhansali shot an entire movie in the shades of blue, why Jackie Chan's clothes were always the show stealer, why a certain colour evokes a very particular emotion in you, this episode holds answers to all this and much more. This week on ‘Has It Aged Well?' Abbas and Urjita are talking about ‘Devdas', and we swear we're doing this sober. Joining them to dissect the Bhansali epic is content creator and SRK junkie: Pulkit Kochar. The trio discusses why the first third of the film is reminiscent of a K-serial, Bhansali's obsession with injuries, does SLB sacrifice progressive values at the cost of authenticity?, whether Madhuri is this film's saving grace, is Chunni Lal representative of that one friend who is a bad influence?, why Devdas features heavily in Shahrukh Khan parodies and most importantly: Was Devdas just an a**hole? For more fun, pop culture stuff from the IVM team subscribe to the IVM Pop feed and also check out our Youtube channel: https://bit.ly/3fa2M66Follow Abbas Momin on twitter: https://twitter.com/AbbasMomin& instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abbasmomin88Follow Urjita Wani on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WaniUrjita& instagram: https://www.instagram.com/urjitawaniFollow Pulkit Kochar on twitter: https://twitter.com/kocharpulkit& instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pulkitkocharYou can listen to this show and other awesome shows on the new and improved IVM Podcasts App on Android: https://ivm.today/android or iOS: https://ivm.today/ios

Welcome to Jollywood, our Bollywood month!! Starting off with the 2002 adaptation of Devdas starring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai as our star-crossed-friends-to-lovers. After over a decade apart Devdas is finally coming home and his childhood best friend, Parvati, who has been pining for him, might finally get the chance to tell him how she feels. Join us for this rollercoaster of emotions.
Apparently we breathe in and out about 22,000 times a day without thinking. It happens automatically, a bodily function we take for granted, along with the heart beating and the body digesting. But the ancient yogis discovered that there was much more to the breath when practiced consciously - what would happen if you paid attention when you breathed?Who better to ask than Devdas, lead pranayama teacher at Akasha Yoga Academy, who has taught pranayama for several decades including 12 years in India. Devdas explains how conscious breathing benefits us on different levels:Physically - stretches the spine and chest muscles and calms the nervous systemMentally - stills the mind and prepares the body for meditationSpiritually - takes you within for a deeper connection to your inner beingThe beauty of pranayama is that anyone can do it - the only entry requirement is to be able to breathe! We discuss how yoga asana and meditation get a lot of air time and rank high in popularity but pranayama deserves an equal seat at the table - it is in fact the bridge between the two practices. A trio that flows seamlessly from one into the other, combining to give you the full package, a powerful punch of overall wellbeing.

Mahatma Gandhi was the primary leader of India's independence movement and also the architect of a form of non-violent civil disobedience that would influence the world. Until Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, his life and teachings inspired activists including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Name: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Born: 2 October 1869 (Porbandar, Gujarat) Known for: Being the father of the nation, political activism leading to Indian independence, nonviolence (ahimsa) Occupation: Lawyer, activist, writer, politician Died: 30 January 1948 Cause of death: Assassination through gunshot by Nathuram Godse Introduction He was the youngest son from his father, Karamchand Gandhi's fourth marriage to Putlibai Gandhi. Karamchand Gandhi did not have much elementary education but was capable to be the dewan of Porbandar. He went on to become the dewan of Rajkot later on. Mohandas Gandhi was a mediocre student who won the occasional prizes and scholarships who was - “good at English, fair in Arithmetic and weak in Geography; conduct very good, bad handwriting.” He got married at the age of thirteen to Kasturba Makhanji Kapadia. They went on to have four children - Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas, Devdas. Education He liked to be a doctor but coming from a background of Vaishnava faith, they were against vivisection. To attain a good post in the high posts in one of the states in Gujarat, he had to be a barrister. He went to England and joined the Inner Temple which is one of the four London law colleges. He struggled with more issues than academic problems, especially vegetarianism became a major struggle for him. He came under constant pressure from his friends about how vegetarianism is going to wreck his studies and health. But then he found a vegetarian restaurant and a book reasoning the goodness of vegetarianism. He became a member of the executive committee of the London Vegetarian Society, contributing articles to its journal and attending its conferences. Early Career He had a lot of issues practising law. His fear of public speaking took a toll on him as he could not get any prestigious barrister jobs back in India. This led to him moving to South Africa and taking a job there. South Africa taught him a lot about the disparities between the white and the coloured. India (1915-1947) Non-Cooperation Movement (1920) It began because of the Rowlatt Act and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Ended with the Chauri Chaura incident of 1922. It led to the arrest of Gandhi and many other prominent leaders. Civil Disobedience Movement(1930) Dandi March (12th March - 6th April 1930) Time Man of the Year 1930 Gandhi and 78 trusted volunteers marched from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi (384 km) in 25 days. Resulted in the Government of India Act 1935 which granted large measures of autonomy to the provinces of British India. Quit Indian Movement (1942) It was opposed by Hindu Mahasabha, All India Muslim League, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Communist Party of India, and the Princely States. Quotes mentioned in the podcasts from Britannica: “Gandhi had critics in his own country and indeed in his own party. The liberal leaders protested that he was going too fast; the young radicals complained that he was not going fast enough; left-wing politicians alleged that he was not serious about evicting the British or liquidating such vested Indian interests as princes and landlords; the leaders of the untouchables doubted his good faith as a social reformer; and Muslim leaders accused him of partiality to his own community.” “Scholars have continued to judge Gandhi's place in history. He was the catalyst if not the initiator of three of the major revolutions of the 20th century: the movements against colonialism, racism, and violence.” Book mentioned in the episode: The Story of My Experiments with Truth by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi: Paperback | Hardcover | Kindle Edition | MP3 CD | Audio Cassette Fin

Support the show! Perhaps the most critically acclaimed among the 20-plus film interpretations of Sarat Chandra Chattopdhyay’s novella, Bimal Roy’s 1955 film, Devdas, sends us into a discussion of mid-century Bollywood and the influence of Bengali literary culture. Plus, how does the movie compare to the 2002 incarnation, much better known to non-desi audiences and yet often maligned as inferior by South Asians and the diaspora? Finally, we discuss changing attitudes about domestic abuse and sexism throughout the history of films in the romance genre. There is no shortage of producers flipping Bollywood-samples, though a good few of them treat the practice as a gimmick or novelty. Anthony Daniel aka November Rose on the other hand does it out of pure and sincere love for the fun and unique flavour in classic Bollywood soundtracks. It is that fun-factor which the Atlanta-based DJ and producer captures on his Wild City mix. Born in Pontiac, Michigan and raised in metro-Detroit, Daniel grew up around the region’s vibrant dance culture, social movements and immigrant communities, developing a special love for funk. Following those strands, Daniel started exploring the musical elements from diaspora of colour in his work, tracing a natural cohesion shared among ethinc groups till he earned himself the label “cultural electronic music producer”. Highlighting the same, November Rose connects the funk beats of Doctor Dru and the four-on-the-floor works from the likes of Detroit Swindle and Leatherette, to the afro house tracks by Black Motion and Juls & Sango and the concluding flips of music from Bollywood films like Devdas (2002) off of his recently released record ‘Desi Spice Vol. II’. While recognition will ultimately make the Indian film music in the mix jump out to anyone familiar with the country’s cinema, the hour-long set gloriously creates a cohesive journey even as it traverses geographic roots and musical styles, all the while generously flavoured by Daniel’s romantic relation with dance music. Show notes: Northwestfest (http://northwestfest.ca), the latest incarnation of the longest-running documentary film festival in Canada, invited us on to talk about the world of movie podcasts. Paul Matwychuk (@myelbow), Erin's co-host on Trash, Art and the Movies, who you'll remember from Episode 23 on DEVDAS and DEV.D (https://audioboom.com/posts/4821508-episode-23-devdas-vs-dev-d-with-paul-matwychuk) hosted the panel, and J.P. Fournier of The Movie Jerks (@moviejerks) also spoke with us. He was on our now-legendary episode on the JISM films (https://audioboom.com/posts/5013228-episode-26-a-double-dose-of-jism-with-the-movie-jerks) with his co-host Shawn Gramiak. It's pretty obvious that one thing that attracts us to music is that it's a marker for events in our lives. How many times have we heard a song from the past and been transported the that particular time and place that brands a moment to the music? There's no better way to recreate the sense of experiences than from music that surrounds particular events, so that we can recall and relive these special periods again and again. And film makers know this. They create the anxiety, elation, pride, and so on that envelopes character's actions. With this offering, I've chosen to create a mix of offerings from films. A lot of times, I'll really tune into the music in a film, and make it a point to search the music out. I have a lot of soundtracks, and I do listen to them quite often. I didn't put a lot of things on this that I would have liked, as I tried to stick with a particular format. Some of my favorites soundtracks that didn't make the cut are Devdas, Purple Rain (I have every Prince album!), The Truth About Charlie, Sprout, Oceans Eleven or Twelve, A.I., A Beautiful Mind, Amelie, Hair, etc., and so on. I purposely tried to steer clear (as well as I could) from the very dark and orchestral heavy soundtrack music that exists more prominently, and chose pieces that ebbed and flowed with organic transitions.I hope that you like this mix. Popcorn is optional. Throughout your life, when you hear a sound or song that inspires you, let inspiration become moment specific. No one has the same life soundtrack as you do.
