Episode 434: The dawn of a new era has arrived. Baseball Is Dead Family Feud has leveled up with the addition of a rotating fourth player. Each Thursday, a new guest will join the mix to complete a 2-vs-2 round. Teammates will be bonded for life… and hearts will be broken forever. Before the feud begins, the guys break down the major change Major League Baseball made to the Home Run Derby rules — the clock is gone, replaced by a set number of swings. The crew shares their thoughts on the new format, along with the official start of award season in Casa de Carrabis. Shohei Ohtani's “struggles” on the mound have the guys intrigued as he continues his historic chase for both the MVP and Cy Young in what's shaping up to be one of the greatest National League Cy Young races in history. Finally, Bruce Meyer joins Baseball Is Dead to break down the latest in MLB labor negotiations. Will there be a strike? Will games be missed? And is a salary cap actually coming to baseball? Award-winning author David Goodman returns to The Conversation for a Coffee Break to talk about his second spy thriller, Solitary Agents, the follow-up to his debut A Reluctant Spy. David won the McDermid New Blood Award and the Bloody Scotland Debut Prize and in this conversation, he gets honest about how lucky he was to have finished his second book before that happened. We get into the premise of Solitary Agents (what if you thought something was an exercise, but it wasn't?), the joy of finally giving fan-favourite Sally Lime her own point of view, and the two walls David hit during the drafting process and how he got through them. We also talk about the unexpected side of publishing life, the difference between being a writer and being an author, why both of us are glad we came to this in our forties, and why writing what you love will always beat chasing trends.David Goodman's Book recommendation: Rat Race by Callum McSorleyBuy Solitary AgentsFollow David GoodmanPre- Order 'The Shadow Carver' PbBuy me a cup of coffee ☕️ | Buy books by my guestsFollow Me Bluesky | Substack | Instagram | Facebook | Threads Hosted on Acast. "I have a dream that Skimbleshanks, as a representative of the MTA, is able to have a sit down with Zohran Mamdani to talk about the MTA fares.” This episode welcomes back the wonderful Emma Sofia for her third appearance on the show to discuss transferring Cats: The Jellicle Ball from the Perelman Arts Center to the Broadhurst Theatre, including how they adapted the PAC's long runway into a proscenium space with tiers, onstage seating, boxes, and continued audience immersion. Emma explains how she maintains Cassandra's boundaryless audience interaction, where Cassandra and Skimbleshanks tend to play in the house, and how the team expanded relationships and ballroom “family tree” lore. Emma talks about cast/story tweaks such as Leiomy as Macavity, Emma receiving the Legacy Robe, the pace of Tony season, and standout promo moments like Miscast and an upcoming MTA Sessions Skimbleshanks collaboration. 01:34 Broadway Transfer 04:00 Designing Immersion at Broadhurst 07:05 Cassandra Crowd Work 16:52 Legacy Robe 22:59 Miscast Experience 30:44 Dream Collabs 33:09 Award Season 40:03 Rapid Fire Check out Emma on Instagram: @emmasofiaokay Check out CATS: The Jellicle Ball on Social Media: @catsjellicleball Check out CATS: The Jellicle Ball: catsthejellicleball.com Produced by: Alan Seales & Broadway Podcast Network Social Media: @TheWrongCatDied Learn more about your ad choices. As promised, MacKenzie Green and I share our Oscars reactions, and thoughts on just about everything: - Awards season and Oscar campaigning - Timothée Chalamet discourse - Misty Copeland's performance - Sinners on Broadway?? - Criticism of Sean Penn winning Best Supporting Actor - The historical context of Black Oscar winners, and why Michael B. Jordan's win is so HUGE - Comparisons to past controversial Oscar wins (think Green Book vs Black Panther) - Distinctions between authentic cultural storytelling (like Sinners) and films by those outside the culture for performative or superficial benefit Check Out Author Social Media PackagesCheck out the Bookwild Community on PatreonCheck Out My Stories Are My Religion SubstackGet Bookwild MerchFollow @imbookwild on InstagramOther Co-hosts On Instagram:Gare Billings @gareindeedreadsSteph Lauer @books.in.badgerlandHalley Sutton @halleysutton25Brian Watson @readingwithbrianMacKenzie Green @missusa2mba

What does "best" actually mean when the Oscars put it on a ballot — and who gets to decide? Matthew sits down with Andy Nelson, co-founder of the TruStory FM family of podcasts, to pull apart the machinery of awards season: how guild voting shapes nominations, why campaigns matter as much as performances, and whether the whole system is rewarding craft or just rewarding whoever threw the better party. Before they get to Oscar strategy, they open with a timely and honest conversation about the BAFTA controversy involving John Davidson — an executive producer with Tourette's syndrome — and what the institution's response revealed about the difference between intent and harm. From there the conversation moves across category fraud (how films like The Favourite and Green Book gamed the lead vs. supporting divide), the impossible split between "Golden" from K-pop Demon Hunter and "I Lied to You" from Sinners as competing definitions of best song, and why genre films still fight for Oscar legitimacy decades after Star Wars got its first nomination.Andy ultimately defends award season as a cultural time capsule — imperfect, political, and very human, but still one of the best tools we have for asking: what did this moment in film actually mean?More about Andy | The Next Reel | Cinema Scope | Movies We Like**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. With ‘Scream 7’ finally out in cinemas around the world after various delays and controversies, we took the opportunity for this Out Takes to review this latest instalment in the 30+ year franchise and also explore its queer legacy across this incredibly popular and at times very camp slasher film series. From those iconic early days of high-profile scream queens being killed off in the opening scenes of the films to the enduring and contentious relationship between Sidney and Gail across the years, we celebrate the queer connection between the films and its fans along with the impact it’s gay creator Kevin Williamson has had on the horror genre. We then took the program in a different direction by taking a look at the new Netflix docuseries that has everyone talking about Tyra. ‘America's Next Top Model’ was created and hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks and began in 2006. It ran for 24 seasons and created spin offs around the world including here is Australia. The show featured up and coming models from across the USA vying to win the competition by competing in challenges, doing photo shoots and commercials and living in a shared house all while being filmed 24/7. The show was always controversial and with more contestants sharing their stories online it was only time before someone decided to take a look back at the people involved and what actually went on behind the scenes on this massively popular reality television juggernaut ‘Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model’ packed a lot in to its three episodes and we were keen to join the conversation on this series too. Finally, with Award’s season nearing the finish line before the Academy Awards in mid-March, we took the time to reflect on the recent BAFTA Awards and see if there are any clear favourites or surprises coming through in the recent winners and to also provide an update on our picks for Oscar glory in 2026. The post Scream 7, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model and a 2026 Award Season update appeared first on Out Takes.

Julia discusses the most criminally underrated, often overlooked, perfect, interesting, authentic, once-in-a-lifetime talent that is Josh O'Connor. Join her in this discussion of his beautiful films including 'La Chimera,' 'Wake Up Dead Man,' 'God's Own Country,' 'The Mastermind,' 'The History of Sound,' and more. Oh and something called 'Challengers' but that's a deep cut. Julia very eloquently unpacks why Josh O'Connor's career (and general being) is legitimately perfect and he will go far and we all owe him a lot and he will continue to be cast in everything ever and probably kiss more boys on-screen, too. So, put on your poorly sewn tennis clothes, get intimate in the back of your busted car, torment your ex best friend/lover, and join the fun!Ep. Literature isn't a horse race. Taste is subjective, and artistic value can't be measured in terms of “winners" and “losers.”That doesn't mean it's not fun to try.The book world's awards season officially kicked off on Oct. 9, when the Hungarian novelist Laszlo Krasznahorkai won the 2025 Nobel Prize, and continued this month when the Booker Prize in England went to the novel “Flesh,” by the British writer David Szalay (also of Hungarian descent, as it happens). Then this week, five National Book Award winners were crowned in various categories at a ceremony in New York.On this episode of the podcast, the host MJ Franklin talks with his fellow Book Review editors Emily Eakin, Joumana Khatib and Dave Kim about the finalists, the winners and what this year's big book awards might tell us about the state of literature in 2025.We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. Award Season is looming and so far there are no clear favorites. And there may never be, Some years are like that. BUT there are some pictures coming soon that have been getting some buzz and lucky us,we've seen them. And lucky you because we'll tell you which movies are worthy of buzz. Neil Rosen starts us off with "Bugonia" which is the latest from director Yorgos Lanthimos who seems to find new ways to torture Emma Stone in every movie he makes. Bill Bregoli tells us about the Netflix movie "Ballad of a Small Player" in which Colin Farrell sweats a lot and gambles in far-off Macau. Is it a safe bet? And Bill McCuddy tells us about "Christy" starring Sydney Sweeney as boxer Christy Martin. We've also got Bill M's interview with Jodie Foster about her latest movie "A Private Life." You can hear it right here. We've also got the Springsteen sort of biopic "Deliver Me From Nowhere" as well as "Nuremberg" starring Russell Crowe as a Nazi! Plus we've got the nuclear thriller from Kathryn Bigelow "A House of Dynamite" and the documentary Ben Stiller made about his parents called "Stiller and Meara: Nothing is Lost." Geez, there's even more including the spicy "Hedda" and the buzzy foreign film "Sentimental Value." There's even more but your humble scribe is tired from all this typing and has just enough energy left to tell you Neil teases something special that's coming soon.
