One of my personal idols growing up, Juhi Pande, sits with us in this wonderfully reflective episode to talk about her eclectic career as a TV host, presenter and VJ on Channel V, and what exactly prompted her to leave that career and make the move from Bombay to London. We dive into the highs of early media life (casually interviewing the likes of Rakhi Sawant and Sanjay Leela Bhansali as part of the job), the quieter shifts that followed, and the deep grief of suddenly losing her best friend and business partner; a moment that changed everything for her. Juhi shares how she slowly began to rebuild, grounding herself in the act of making with her hands, eventually founding Skunk, a line of beautifully crafted soaps made with intention and care. And then, the whirlwind that was becoming a mother at 39 and how that's transformed her life in beautiful ways she had never imagined. This conversation is nostalgic and full of the kind of honesty that will stay with anyone trying to figure out what comes after the pivotal moment.Explore Juhi's work on: Website: https://skunksuperstore.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/skunksuperstore/

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's big-budget streaming debut, is yet another high-profile Netflix failure. A summation and culmination of Bhansali's lifelong ambitions, the show represents everything that is wrong with his sensibilities and style-over-substance storytelling. We discuss the show's flawed understanding of feminism, aestheticisation of female suffering, and haphazard structure. We also talk about why the immaculate visuals and costumes that Bhansali is known for don't contribute to his narratives. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. Dil Toh Filmy Hai's Director's First Series sheds light on successful Bollywood directors whose directorial debuts may have been forgotten. In this episode, we discuss director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is known for directing films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Bajirao Mastani & Gangubai Kadhiawadi. However, people may have forgotten that his debut film was something else altogether. Listen to Amreen & Shwayta on Dil Toh Filmy Hai to find out what Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut film is!
Gangubai Kathiawadi from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali sees Alia Bhatt play the notoriously infamous Madame to various effects. On the one hand, the film is a dark and serious look at admittedly difficult parts of her legacy, while at the same time glossing over events to make them seem less sordid and violent than they in fact were. As Jason & Ryan review the film, you'll get both sides of the equation, as Jason took issue with the manner in which Gangubai Kathiawadi was represented, while Ryan felt the film did an estimable job telling the story of this flawed yet unique character that did much to advance the normalization of sex work in India and abroad. Either way, get ready for five musical sequences in a row (j/k) as we review Gangubai Kathiawadi right here on Esoterica Cinema.#moviereview #indiancinema #aliabhatt #sanjayleelabhansali #moviereviewpodcast #filmanalysis #filmcritic #filmcritique #filmcriticismABOUT OUR CHANNEL Esoterica Cinema is the result of a great friendship between Jason Peters and Ryan Seybold. The program focuses not just on surface level observations, but gets down to the heart and soul of what makes a given film tick. Direction, Acting, Cinematography, Score, Sound Design, Narrative Structure, and Character Arcs are some of the many high-level and granular analysis provided on every episode. This week on ‘Has It Aged Well?' Abbas and Urjita are talking about ‘Devdas', and we swear we're doing this sober. Joining them to dissect the Bhansali epic is content creator and SRK junkie: Pulkit Kochar. The trio discusses why the first third of the film is reminiscent of a K-serial, Bhansali's obsession with injuries, does SLB sacrifice progressive values at the cost of authenticity?, whether Madhuri is this film's saving grace, is Chunni Lal representative of that one friend who is a bad influence?, why Devdas features heavily in Shahrukh Khan parodies and most importantly: Was Devdas just an a**hole? For more fun, pop culture stuff from the IVM team subscribe to the IVM Pop feed and also check out our Youtube channel: https://bit.ly/3fa2M66Follow Abbas Momin on twitter: https://twitter.com/AbbasMomin& instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abbasmomin88Follow Urjita Wani on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WaniUrjita& instagram: https://www.instagram.com/urjitawaniFollow Pulkit Kochar on twitter: https://twitter.com/kocharpulkit& instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pulkitkocharYou can listen to this show and other awesome shows on the new and improved IVM Podcasts App on Android: https://ivm.today/android or iOS: https://ivm.today/ios

This week's guest is screenwriter Utkarshini Vashishtha, whose journey is so full of twists and turns that we want her to turn into a movie. She is the co-writer of the exceptional Bollywood film, "Gangubai Kathiawadi" alongside its iconic Indian film director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Utkarshini is literally the epitome of someone who manifests her dreams by putting in all the hard work by practicing "be it till other people see it" (an extremely entertaining variant of "fake it till you make it") and having great timing. Also we love her and want her to be our new best friend – and you will too.
Composer-arranger & singer Harshit Chauhan chats with Host Eva Bhatt about his passion for creating ‘original' music and some interesting stories about his ‘hustle' in the music world. He talks about his mentors, veterans Kalyanji Anandji and some other key people who helped him in his journey, till date, namely singer Divya Kumar, Aditya Narayan & Adhyayan Suman. He credits music composer Shreyas Puranik for giving him some great projects to arrange music for, one being, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Malaal', amonst others. While talking about his ‘indie' music projects, he shares some important tips for newcomers and upcoming artists in the industry. His IP, 'OG Studio', comprises of original songs, sung by popular names in the industry.

Let's talk about Gangubai Kothewali! (or Gangubai Kathiawadi, as she is also known)Gangubai was a woman who existed and thrived in the 1960s in the Kamathipura area of Mumbai, which is essentially a red-light district in the city. She is known to have been a sex worker and a madam of a brothel. But more importantly, she was known as a social activist, working for sex workers' rights and the well-being of the children and orphans in the Kamathipura area. Where did she get the money to do all this though? Well… some sex work, some pimping, and maybe some hooliganism. There's also a movie about her, made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, that came out in February 2022. Very small-budget movie with a newcomer called Alia Bhatt. Not a bad movie actually, you should check it out! ALSO!! Gangubai Kathiawadi—the latest Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, out now on Netflix—proves that the director hasn't outgrown his worst tendencies. We discuss the Alia Bhatt-led film's jarring episodic structure, the fantastical visuals, and Bhansali's problematic romanticisation of female victimhood. We also talk about his fear of depicting sex, his puerile portrayal of Mumbai's red light district, and the Ajay Devgn saviour complex. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. In the life of a sex worker Gangubai, played by Alia Bhatt, who thrived in the bylanes of Kamathipura in the 1950s, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali finds feisty feminism, joy, brutality, heartbreak and unstinting courage. He tells her story with dramatic flourish, rich emotion, gorgeous visuals and always, a bruised, beating heart. Listen Anupama Chopra's full review of Gangubai Kathiawadi to know more.
