About Us:
“Chai is amazing — it should be right alongside a good cup of coffee, espresso, or cappuccino. This business helped me reconcile my American upbringing and my Indian heritage — that push and pull, that beautiful combination of everything.”Ayan Sanyal is co-founder of Kolkata Chai Company, a vibrant café and online brand redefining what masala chai means to America. Founded in 2018 by two brothers, Kolkata Chai Co has a simple mission: to bring the authenticity, respect and tradition behind a cup of masala chai to NYC and beyond. What quickly became clear to Ayan was that his work went beyond tea brewing. It was about creating a space - and product - to understand and celebrate culture, comfort, and connection. The Kolkata Chai story caught the attention of many, including comedian Hasan Minhaj, a passionate investor and advocate. Before founding Kolkata Chai, Ayan established a strong career in marketing and advertising — as Managing Director at Green Room Creative, driving growth strategies for startups and mid-stage companies, and held key digital roles at 2U, Havas Media, Hill Holliday and Connelly Partners. Bridging a life of rock music, marketing, and brewing - Ayan's journey is informed from travels between Amherst, Kolkata, Brooklyn, and everything in between. You'll enjoy this candid conversation about family, culture, and entrepreneurship, hopefully with a good cup of chai. This episode is from Modern Minorities, Raman's other podcast - where we share minority conversations for all of our majority years — which we hope will inspire new perspectives and learnings.
“Chai is amazing — it should be right alongside a good cup of coffee, espresso, or cappuccino. This business helped me reconcile my American upbringing and my Indian heritage — that push and pull, that beautiful combination of everything.” Ayan Sanyal is Co-founder of Kolkata Chai Company, which if you're in NY, you should stop by sometime soon (or order some online) — it's something special. I've been going for a couple of years, and more than a few others do to, including frieMMd of the pod Rajiv, and his bud Hasan Minhaj, who's become a big investor and advocate. Chai is something special — and good, REAL chai is something transcendent (just don't call it chai tea). Good chai takes time. It takes people. And it creates friendship. Ayan and his brother founded Kolkata Chai Co. in 2018 to bring authentic masala chai to New York City. Growing up to Bengali parents in Amherst, MA, the brothers navigated tea times, rock bands, and trips back to India (street food FTW) - finding different inspirations along the way. The two built a career and background in digital advertising and media, but quickly challenged themselves to take a side passion - brewing chai at home - to farmers markets and beyond — redefining how chai and culture can be experienced in the city, and further into America. Hearing Ayan's journey, from Amherst, MA to Kolkata and back again — and all the comic books and rock music in between - you'll be inspired to do more, and have a great cup along the way. To say there are many SaaS CMOs and marketing leaders in transition right now is an understatement. A good chunk is going the fractional route, others are consultants, and some are looking to get out of the enterprise and shake it up at an early-stage company (or vice versa). Niloy Sanyal, CMO at LeanTaaS and former CMO at GE, details the good, bad, and the ugly when it comes to jumping ship at a large organization in favor of a start up or scale up. If you are a marketing leader toying with this idea, this is the episode for you.

After India's big economic shift in 1991, each state grew at different rates—but they didn't all get there at the same speed.Western and southern states saw major benefits, while many in the east and north struggled to keep up. In fact, by 2021-22, the per capita income in the top five states was 3.3 times higher than in the bottom five—a clear sign of the widening divide. So, what does this uneven growth look like?In the 1960s, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal were leading India's economy with contributions of 14.4%, 12.5%, and 10.5% of GDP, respectively. Today, Uttar Pradesh's share has fallen to 8.4%, and West Bengal's to 5.6%, but Maharashtra remains a top contributor.Gujarat's share grew from 6.4% in 2000-01 to 8.1% in 2022-23, driven by strong industry and urban centres. Southern states like Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala now make up about 30% of India's GDP, boosted by cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. In this NEON Show episode, economist and policy advisor Sanjeev Sanyal discusses India's economic journey and why growth has been so uneven across states. He explains why some regions have surged ahead while others have lagged behind, touching on the role of anchor cities and old policies like the Freight Equalization Policy that held back Eastern states.Time stamps00:00 - Trailer02:40 - Banking Reforms and Creative Destruction03:20 - Process vs. Structural Reforms05:33 - Bureaucratic Challenges Affect Efficiency14:09 - Autonomous Bodies and Obsolete Institutions16:02 - Is it time to rethink outdated National Monuments?26:06 - What Does Data Reveal About Indian States35:03 - Did “Freight equalization” Rob Kolkata of its Competitive edge?36:25 - East vs. West: Is this India's true economic divide?37:32 - Southern and Western India's Success42:42 - High Growth States Rely on Anchor Cities44:01 - Reviving Kolkata and Eastern India45:12 - Local policies that can make or break state economies.49:11 - Tourism Has Made Sikkim and Goa Economic Stars.53:35 - India Needs to Modernize the Shipping Sector01:00:36 - India Needs a Healthy Clash of Ideas------------Hi, I am your host Siddhartha! See, there is a scientific process to crafting messages that truly compel someone to: apply to your job posting, to fill out the inquiry form on your website, to subscribe to your newsletter to award you the contract and not your competitor The list goes on. Whether you hoping to transact in dollars or just in information, there are certain spots in your business where the exact words on the page really matter. The technical term for what I'm talking about is conversion copywriting, and the concept is simple: construct sentences in such a way that makes the reader feel seen and understood and want to interact with you more. Another way to think of this is “Salesmanship In Print.” Ami Sanyal is a marketing strategist, the CEO of The Uncommoners Club (his agency), and our conversion copywriter here at Breakthrough Academy. I've worked firsthand with him over the past year, and honestly can say he's the most talented person at his craft that I've ever met. Long story short, if you want to learn how to write job postings that give you an inbox full of resumes, how to write follow-up emails that get excited responses, or website CTAs which get you leads, learning the basics of conversion copy is probably a good idea. The good news? Mastering this craft is easier and more formulaic than you might think.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Customer success doesn't happen at the same rate for everyone. The customers you serve with differences, including those who are BIPOC, often have external factors that negatively impact their journey to success. The good news is, you have the power to implement products, services, and experiences that pave the way for a greater degree of success for your BIPOC customers and others with differences. In this episode, Natalia Sanyal, an anti-oppressive copywriter and brand strategist talk about an approach she's taken to make her BIPOC customers feel seen, cared for, and have a greater likelihood of both enjoyment and success with her programs. Her approach is one that can be replicated and adapted to fit your business needs and the consumers you serve.
