Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Monday, December 16, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. If you're considering flying between India's major cities at the end of the year, you're in luck—airfare prices have significantly dropped. Data from ticket booking platforms indicates that airfares on key metro routes have decreased by as much as a third compared to last year. For instance, flights between Chennai and Kolkata have seen the largest reduction, with fares down by 28%, followed by Kolkata to Bengaluru with a 27% drop. This decrease in prices is partly due to lower demand for metro-to-metro travel during the holiday season, compounded by the economic slowdown which has affected spending habits. However, if you're planning to head to smaller towns or popular holiday destinations, expect to pay more. Daanish Anand reports on the dwindling airfare between metro cities, in today's Primer. The Indian government is considering a fresh capital infusion for its struggling public sector general insurers in the next fiscal year to bolster their operations and help them meet regulatory standards. This move, potentially involving ₹4,000-5,000 crore, is aimed at improving the solvency ratios of National Insurance, United Insurance, and Oriental Insurance, which currently fall well below the mandatory threshold. The solvency ratio, critical for insurers, measures the excess capital they hold over potential claims, with a regulatory minimum set at 150%. Despite some intermittent profits, these insurers have generally underperformed, with solvency ratios lingering in the negatives by the end of FY24. The government's potential capital support is contingent on the insurers demonstrating consistent improvement in financial metrics, Subhash Narayan and Rhik Kundu report. In the branding world, IndiGo's squabble with Mahindra and Mahindra over the "6E" label is a classic case of how a simple code can evolve into a significant brand asset. For over 16 years, IndiGo has used "6E" more than just as a flight code—it's become a key part of their brand identity, even cleverly marketed to sound like "sexy." The issue popped up when Mahindra decided to use "6e" for its new electric SUV. This led to a debate over trademark rights across different product classes—IndiGo's trademark is registered for transport under Class 39, not vehicles - which falls under Class 12. Legal experts Gaurav Laghate spoke to, suggest that if IndiGo had also registered in Class 12, they might have had a stronger case. As it stands, the chance of customer confusion seems low. As both companies wait for a legal resolution expected next year, with Mahindra holding off on using "6e”.After clinching the title as the youngest World Chess Champion ever, Gukesh Dommaraju's fame has quickly caught the attention of marketers looking for fresh faces to endorse their brands. Over just one weekend, companies from various sectors, including FMCG and gaming, were keen to align with the chess prodigy, reports Varuni Khosla. Gukesh now commands an endorsement fee ranging from ₹70 lakh to ₹1 crore annually. His historic victory over Ding Liren in Singapore not only broke a record previously held by Garry Kasparov but also elevated him to a status comparable to chess legend Viswanathan Anand. His triumph has rekindled interest in chess as a sport that's both intellectually rigorous and "cool," shifting its public perception significantly. In a flourishing sector, India's table grape growers are reaping significant benefits, with profits soaring in good crop years. The country has risen to become one of the top five global exporters of table grapes, finding a strong market in high-standard international supermarkets. This success is primarily driven by meticulous adherence to quality standards demanded by Western consumers, such as specific berry sizes and sugar content. In the fiscal year 2023-24, India exported grapes valued at ₹3,461 crore, marking a 36% increase year-on-year and a significant growth over the past decade. Nashik, Maharashtra, has been pivotal in this expansion, contributing nearly half of the export volume, thanks to its conducive climate and expertise in viticulture. Sayantan Bera writes about how the grapes of Nashik, have been conquering the world.

India is shocked with the alarming price hike of tomatoes, which have risen to a whopping Rs 200 per kilo across marketplaces. This dramatic price increase, more than five times the cost of last year, has shifted the attention away from onions and potatoes and towards tomatoes. Notably, the steep price increase has forced fast food major McDonald's to remove tomatoes off their menus in certain locations. Tomatoes are now more expensive than a litre of gasoline, placing them on level with fruits like apples and plums in terms of pricing. To throw some light on this matter, Host Kiran Somvanshi engages in insightful discussions with industry experts1) Sukhpal Singh, Professor of Centre for Management in Agriculture (CMA)2) Narayanan Renganathan, Vice President & Head of Procurement at Dabur 3) Maruti Chapke, Founder & CEO at go4fresh4)Kapil Dev, Chief Business Officer at NCDEXIf you like this episode from Kiran Somvanshi, check out his other interesting episodes on The A to Z of the Zee-Sony Merger Saga, The Billion Dollar Baby: The Business of IVF, Pakistan in Penury, Watch Before You Eat and much more! Akrodha Paramananda song meaning, Nityananda Trayodashi 2023 class at Nashik, Hindi
— “You were taught how to think, what to think, how to be and act, etc. This programming concealed your real identity. Inevitably, over time, one layer, after another, of your "make-up", in the form of thoughts, concepts and imagination, succeeded in obscuring your true identity. In time, you forgot about your innocent and spontaneous nature; you forgot about your Essence. Becoming aware of the add-ons or superimpositions to one's original nature is the first step. Undoing and freeing oneself from all the add-ons is the next step. We are not separate individuals, but formless, Spontaneous Presence, all part of the same Essence. The crux of the subject matter is that we are essentially Spirit Beings. We have always existed, and we will always exist. Our identification with the body-form has kept us ignorant, deluding us into thinking that we are unique individuals. We perceive ourselves as different from each other when it is only the body-form and pseudo-identity that differ.” Valeria interviews Ann Shaw — The author of “Who Am I ?” Ann has been fascinated with the ultimate questions of “Who am I?” “Where have I come from?” for as long as she can remember. She spent many periods in solitude and reflection, looking for answers. She practiced meditation, Self-enquiry, contemplation and also attended various solitary retreats. Finding out the meaning of life became the most crucial topic. Driven by a fiery determination and in hot pursuit of answers, Ann immersed herself in a wide variety of spiritual literature from east and west. This included the mystics, teachers and masters of varied traditions, including Ramana Maharshi, Paramahansa Yogananda, Joel Goldsmith, Buddhism, Taoism, Rumi and Sufism, etc. Her interest and passion led her to the academic study of the subjects close to her heart, namely, psychology, theology, mysticism, comparative religion, etc. Armed with intellectual knowledge and graced with several spiritual/mystical experiences, the search continued with a vengeance. The journey had its highs and lows - with long periods “in the desert”, until, at last, further down the illusory road, what she was looking for, found her! The teachings of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj and his Master, Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, freed Ann from the illusory “I”, thus bringing her search to an end. In 2013-2014, she spent nearly six months in Nashik, India, with her husband, in the presence of Nisargadatta's successor, Shri Ramakant Maharaj, absorbing the teachings and undergoing the various simple, yet, powerful, practices. She had reached her destination! They remained in close contact with Maharaj over the years, while continuing to spread the teachings across the globe and enabling seekers to visit Maharaj in Nashik. Auspiciously, Ann returned to Nashik for a few more months in 2018, to be with her Master. Shri Ramakant Maharaj attained Mahasamadhi in August 31st. Ann is the editor of Selfless Self, (hailed as a spiritual classic), on the teachings of Shri Ramakant Maharaj, which was published in 2015, and has since been translated into six languages. She also edited Maharaj's books, Be With You, (2016) and Ultimate Truth, (2018). Her book Timeless Years with Shri Ramakant Mahararj 2012 – 2022 by Ann & Charles Shaw was published on March 1st 2022. It is a fascinating story of their time in India with their Master and offers a unique and profound insight into Maharaj's life and the Guru-disciple or Teacher-student relationship. Who Am I? published on April 11 2022, offers answers to anyone searching for a greater understanding of who we are and why we are here. And not only that, its uplifting, vibrational wisdom enables a true experience of the Self. This self-help book contains practical guidance and techniques on how to know yourself, put an end to suffering and find lasting happiness and peace. Who Am I? is a refreshing read that crosses all barriers. Not limited by any belief system, philosophy, religion, spirituality, or genre, it speaks to us all. As well as continuing to write books, she teaches Naam Mantra meditation, as she was instructed to do, by Shri Ramakant Maharaj To learn more about Ann Shaw and her work, please visit: whoamibook.co.uk and annshaw.space — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. During her Union Budget speech on February 1st, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the government's plan on the issuance of e-passports embedded with an electronic chip in order to enhance convenience for citizens in their overseas travel. VO2> According to the proposal, the e-passport will be a combination of paper and electronic passport, with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip. An antenna will be embedded as an inlay in the back cover. The passport's critical information will be stored in the chip and printed on the data page. The characteristics of the e-passport are specified by the International Civil Aviation Organization, an agency of the United Nations. The government clarified that data of the citizens obtained for e-passport will be used only for the purposes of issuance of the passport and related services. There will not be any secondary use of the data, thereby safeguarding privacy concerns. Further transaction processes are authenticated by digital certificates and are cryptographically signed. Once captured, the data is stored in a secured industry-standard database. The Security Operations Centre will perform relevant database security-related controls round the clock. The government is currently testing sample e-passports with the full-scale manufacture and issuance set to commence following completion of the technical ecosystem and infrastructure. The facility to issue e-passports will be made available in phases at all 36 passport offices across the country. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has reportedly bagged the contract for delivering e-passports. This deal is in addition to the second phase of implementing the Passport Seva Program, which the company got from the External Affairs Ministry. While the government will source the hardware chips, TCS will be responsible for their encoding. The government has entrusted National Informatics Centre (NIC) with the technical responsibilities. The e-passports will be produced by the India Security Press in Maharashtra's Nashik, which has issued letters of intent for the procurement of 4.5 crore ICAO-compliant electronic chips. Interestingly, the government issued India's first e-passport with biometric details to former President Pratibha Patil in 2008. At the request of the Ministry of External Affairs, the National Informatics Centre had conducted a pilot project for the issuance of e-passports then. About 20,000 e-passports for diplomats and officials have been issued. E-passports enhance the security of passports, eliminate duplication, eliminate data tampering and will be used by border control authorities for monitoring the entry and exit of passengers. Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan recently said that any tampering of the ship will be identified by the system, resulting in the failure of the passport authentication. He said that in addition to providing protection against fraudulent practices, the e-Passport with its advanced security features will substantially upgrade existing passports and services to the citizens.
*SAVE NATURE* : Max Temperatures recorded in some Indian cities: ☀Lucknow 47 degrees ☀Delhi 47 degrees ☀Agra 45 degrees ☀Nagpur 49 degrees ☀Kota 48 degrees ☀Hyderabad 45 degrees ☀Pune 42 degrees ☀Ahmedabad 46 degrees ☀ Mumbai 42 degrees ☀ Nashik 40 degrees ☀Bangalore 40 degrees ☀ Chennai 45 degrees ☀Rajkot 45 degrees Next years these cities will cross 50 degrees. Even AC or fan will not save us in summer.. Why is it so hot ??? In last 10 years over 10 crore trees were cut for widening roads and highways. But not more than a lakh trees have been planted by govt. or public. How to make India cool ??? Please do not wait for government to plant trees. Sowing seeds or planting trees does not cost much. Just collect seeds of Shatavari, Bel, Peeple, Tulsi, Mango, Lemon, Jamun, Neem, Custard Apple, Jack fruit, etc. Then dig two-three inch hole on open spaces, roadside, footpaths, highways, gardens and also in your society or bungalow. Bury these seeds in each hole with soil and then water them every two days in summer. In rainy season no need to water them. After 15 to 30 days small plants will be born. Let us make this a National movement and plant 10 crore trees all over India. We should stop temperature from crossing 50 degrees..... Please plant maximum trees and forward this message to everyone. Lets distribute saplings as return gifts during functions, birthdays etc. *1 person - 1 plant* We will easily reach 10 crore plants
In this episode, I'm speaking with Rajeev Samant, CEO of Sula Vineyards and the man responsible for putting wine on the map of India. When asked about his success he simply says he was “the right guy in the right place with the right background.” His friends called him crazy when he quit his job and moved to a poverty-stricken area in India to start a vineyard. But, he now has the last laugh having created one of the most visited vineyards in the world. Rajeev talks about the team he assembled to help him create Sula Vineyards, the bureaucratic obstacles he had to overcome in the beginning, and his top takeaways for entrepreneurs. Later in the episode, we hear a fictional story written by Gary Krivstov. IN THIS EPISODE: [02:20] The right guy in the right place with the right background [08:15] Acclimating to the culture of Nashik [11:52] Rajeev's team and mentors [15:30] Challenges of an entrepreneur [20:08] Agricultural entrepreneurship in India [23:25] Takeaways from Rajeev's experience [31:38] FICTION: Sanith grapples with tales of a ghost in his vineyard [35:35] Sanith's father recounts seeing the Spirit and Sanith tries to understand [41:50] Sanith gets to the bottom of the ghost story KEY TAKEAWAYS: Rajeev's success goes far beyond having established and grown a business, he essentially crafted an industry that was nonexistent in India. Rajeev turned the vineyard into one of the most visited vineyards in the world. He created a destination where people would love what they saw and experienced. Where they would leave as converts and as brand ambassadors. The Indian government has a lot of potential when it comes to agricultural progress. Rajeev explains how bringing in private buyers could balance out the larger farms that are far too politically powerful. Entrepreneurs need to be strong. They have to be mentally resilient. In your business, if you're not talking about sustainability and you're not thinking about doing business in an eco-friendly way from day one, then you should not be doing it. They talk about Navin doing a better job than Silverie who is chilling in Himachal, and how fashionable is the panel, with Punit having a different hairstyle every day. They contemplate which of the panelist can carry what kind of alook, should spitting be an Olympic sport, and what sound they like to be called. The ponder on TSA agents being on all commercial flights since 1971 and what they are called, and JNU students clashing over non-veg food on Ram Navami, with Students getting beaten up and why should a university not be run by the students. When it comes to food, Cyrus and the panel talk about their love for food and how south India is not just vegetarian food lovers but also largely consists of non veg food, and Punjab having mostly Veg food lovers. They ask if our panel has ever been in a road rage and the funny incidents that have happened in their life, and also if they have ever bunked school. Is Faultily actually a word, 40 electric vehicles blowing up into a container in Nashik and why is A R Rahman angry with Amit Shah.

We start our walk with a visit to the Kalaram temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Ram. The temple and the deity are sculpted in black basalt stone, hence the name Kalaram. The temple also houses idols of Sita and Lakshman and is estimated to be built between the 7th-11th century originally and reconstructed during the 1780s. Nashik has a lot of influence from the Hindu epic of Ramayan, as is seen from the temples and the names of the neighborhoods. The next stop is the Goraram temple, built in white marble and hence the name - Goraram or fair Ram, also believed to be built in the 1780s. The temple architecture resembles that of a wada (residence) and is very unique. Another popular festival of Nashik is the Rangapanchami, celebrated a few days after holi, the festival of colors. The festival is very popular for the Rahad or the colored water pits! Another popular temple in the locality is Kapaleshwar temple, close to the banks of the Godavari. It is unique for the mixed architecture and use of domes in the construction of the temple. From here, we make a stop at the Godavari ghats and the popular kunds - Ramkund, Lakshman kund and Sitakund. The kunds are very significant as people perform final rites of their loved ones in these kunds. Another popular structure in this area is the Ahilya Devi Holkar bridge - learn more about the wonderful stories around this bridge. Our final stop in Panchavati is the Naroshankar temple and it's iconic Naroshankar bell, acquired during the battle at Vasai fort. On the other side of the river is the Old city of Nashik that is popular for its markets and the wadas in the alleys. The popular markets include textile market (kaapadpet), Vessel market (bhaandi bazar), Jewellery market (Saraf bazar), steel market. One can spend hours in these markets and narrow alleys watching the beautiful wada architecture. We make some stops at local homes and discover the architecture of these old homes. Our final stop of the walk is the Sarkar wada, now a government museum but that has been used as an administrative office, prison, a public library and a police station! At the end of the walk, make sure to binge on some good old Nashik Misal, jalebis, fafdas, dhoklas (thanks to the gujarati influence), sabudana vada. One of the popular eateries in the locality is Sayantara! Other options include the numerous forts in and around Nashik and the iconic wineries of Nashik! Centre announced that all Afghans must travel to India on e-visa, Narayan Rane received a fresh notice of summons from the Nashik police, India might be entering the endemic stage of Covid-19 : WHO & other top news in this bulletin.
The decade's long feud between Narayan Rane and Uddhav Thackeray has reached a new low with the former, a Union minister, being arrested for his remarks against Thackeray. In one of his address to the media on Monday, 23 August, Rane had alleged that Thackeray had forgotten the year of India's Independence during his 15 August address to the state and had to check the same with his aides during his speech. He added that if he was present there, he would have given Thackeray a "tight slap". And swiftly he was arrested by Nashik police, on Tuesday, 24 August. His comments resulted not just in his arrest but also violent clashes between Shiv Sena and BJP workers, large protests and vandalism in several cities across Maharashtra. In one visual captured on social media, a Shiv Sena worker can be seen pelting stones at the BJP office in Nashik. But the arrest also comes just a few months ahead of the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections, where the MVA and the BJP are expected to battle it out in key constituencies like Mumbai and Thane. In a bid to regain political control of the state, the BJP has positioned Rane in Maharashtra to take on the MVA. But why was the Shiv Sena up in arms about Rane's comments? What caused the bitter feud between Rane and Thackeray? And where is it headed? To discuss this, for today's episode, we spoke with senior journalist and author Sujata Anandan.
