"The Purple Tape": Wordsmith's new play celebrates hip hop's 50th

Joining Tom now is the Baltimore-based hip hop virtuoso, recording artist and activist Anthony Parker, better known as Wordsmith, the founder of the youth advocacy organization, Rise with a Purpose… Also with us in studio are Tajae Holloway and Dayana Punnett, two of the performers in The Purple Tape, a new musical written and produced by Wordsmith in collaboration with the Baltimore Rock Opera Society, that celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip hop. Set in Baltimore in the 90s, The Purple Tape's storyline incorporates classic period rap hits from Wu-Tang, The Notorious B.I.G., 2PAC and LL Cool J. The students of New Song Academy (where Wordsmith teaches) rap their way through a summer day as they embark on a hunt for a rare copy of the famous Raekwon album. Only 10,000 cassettes of that album were printed, guaranteeing it would be intensely coveted by devoted Raekwon/Wu-Tang fans. The search for "The Purple Tape" ends up being a lesson in hip hop history, as the students come to realize the culture of hip hop is a way of living. The Purple Tape is an exuberant, educational and family-friendly musical experience. (photo courtesy Wordsmith)Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

Petula Caesar is a multi-talented all around artistic being. She is a writer, performer, creator, producer, recording artist and arts administrator. She got her start writing erotica when she was published in New York Times bestselling author Zane's erotica anthology “Caramel Flava” and has published two volumes of erotic ficton and an audiobook of erotic fiction. Petula has written for various publications like Baltimore's former alternative weekly City Paper, The Afro-American Newspapers, and Baltimore Magazine. Petula is also a storyteller and performance poet who has been featured at signature Baltimore events like Artscape, Stoop Storytelling, The Baltimore Book Festival, and Charm City Kitty Club. She has performed erotic poetry and suggestive storytelling with her band in tow for audiences up and down the East Coast and has performed with The Punany Poets from HBO's "Real Sex" series. After spending much time onstage in front of audiences of all kinds, Petula grew to love backstage just as much, and moved into theatrical production, event production and artist booking. She has curated, directed and produced events at most major venues in Baltimore, including The Creative Alliance, The Motor House, Arena Players, The Arch Social Club, The Reginald Lewis Museum and Metro Gallery and has worked with numerous Baltimore performers like The 5th L, Eze Jackson, Lea Gilmore, Jonathan Gilmore, Navasha Daya, and Joyce Scott. She created Caesar Productions LLC to present and elevate various aspects of African American culture, especially performance and literary arts through events ranging from live performance to workshops. Petula released her memoir entitled “She's Such A Bright Girl: An American Story” in June 2018, where she recounts an upbringing full of conflict and tension centered around colorism. The book won an Honorable Mention at the North Street Books Prize for creative non-fiction, and throughout 2018 and 2019 Petula could often be found appearing at branches of the Enoch Pratt Library and at other community events talking about her book and other themes related to race. Petula became director of Community Engagement for the Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS) in 2019. In her role of finding ways for BROS to become more reflective of Baltimore's demographic (majority African American), she assisted with creating programming with that audience in mind by using Black creatives both onstage and behind the scenes to execute that programming. This included serving as producer of a series of virtual concerts in 2020 called Rock Opera 101 (during the height of COVID no less). And while 2021 finds us still facing COVID, Petula continues to create, serving as Executive Producer and Co-Creative director of a theatrical presentation called “Funktopia - An Intergalactic Tribute To Funk and Hip Hop” that will feature music from Outkast, Kendrick Lamar, George Clinton, Funkadelic, and similarly funky artists.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? It's Thursday, and time for theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck's weekly review of a regional stage production. This week, she joins Tom to talk about the latest offering from Baltimore Rock Opera Society, a kid-friendly musical production called Welcome to Shakesville.Conceived by Sarah Gorman and directed for the BROS by Lucia A. Treasure, Welcome to Shakesville tells a story of a gifted young African American artist named Betty and her journey toward artistic self-awareness. As the BROS program puts it, it's a ----hip and trippy---- journey that's told, and sung, using the pop-culture imagery, puppetry, fantasy and multi-genre music that energized such iconic 60s and 70's TV shows and movies as H.R. Pufnstuf, The Muppet Show, and Yellow Submarine. The BROS production features lead performances by Jacquan Knox as Betty and Matthew Casella as Jimmy, with music from a 10-man band called The Far Outs. The Baltimore Rock Opera Society's production of Welcome to Shakesville continues at Zion Church of the City of Baltimore (Zion Lutheran), located at 400 Lexington Street, through Sunday, June 16. It's Thursday and time for our regular weekly visit with theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins us today with her review of the new production of Eugene O'Neill's dark classic, Long Day's Journey Into Night, now on stage at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre. With director Donald Hicken helming a seasoned cast of resident company* and guest actors, the play recounts a summer day and night in 1912 in the Connecticut home of the Tyrone family. A stream of interactions quickly reveals the family members' deep emotional wounds and long-simmering conflicts. James Tyrone (played by Kurt Rhoads, in his Everyman debut), his morphine-addicted wife Mary (Deborah Hazlett*), and their two sons, Jamie (Tim Getman*) and Edmund (Danny Gavigan*), struggle to connect with each other through their tangled webs of drug addiction, alcoholism, anger and love. The production also features actress Katherine Ariyan as Cathleen, the Tyrone's housekeeper.Long Day's Journey Into Night continues at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre til Sunday, March 4. For ticket information click here.Judy also spotlights two distinctive productions making brief runs in the region. The first is a landmark collaboration between two seemingly unlikely bedfellows — the Baltimore Rock Opera Society and Arena Players. “Constellations” and “Crossroads” are two original short operas about African-Americans, including “Hidden Figures’” Katherine Johnson, running February 9-11 and 16-18. Here's a Youtube video about it from BROS. The other notable production is a rewritten version of the Benny Andersson, Bju246urn Ulvaeus, Tim Rice musical, “Chess,” the first installment of a new series of high-profile staged concerts at the Kennedy Center. Chess runs February 14- 18.

“Brides of Tortuga,” “Grundelhammer” and “Phantom of the Paradise” were three of the original productions staged by the Baltimore Rock Opera Society over the last eight years. But BROS actors, writers, designers, builders, musicians and artists now finds themselves in exile, without a headquarters and production house. The nonprofit opera company was among tenants of the old Bell Foundry building until Baltimore officials condemned the workspace in the Station North Arts District last month. Now BROS is trying to raise money to buy a permanent home for its raucous and imaginative productions. Today’s guest: Aran Keating, the company’s artistic director, talks about BROS’s quest for a new space. -PODCASTCASTLE- Hola Digheads! This week Josh and Mike are joined by multi-talented comedians, Mark Miller and Kathy Carson! Mark and Kathy are both Baltimore based stand ups and improvisers. Mark has a dry wit, a penchant for one-liners and a delivery that relishes awkward silence. While Kathy has more of a story based approach to stand up, which mixes in a healthy bit of social commentary as well. Mark is also a member of the Baltimore Rock Opera Society or BROS. Their next feature-length original rock opera is “MURDERCASTLE.” Set in Chicago's 1893 World's Fair, MURDERCASTLE recounts the disturbing tale of America's first serial killer, H.H. Holmes – the empire he created, and the brutal fate of his victims. MUDERCASTLE opens Friday, May 10, 2013 at The Autograph Playhouse in Baltimore. And you can see Kathy performing with her BIG troupe, Lekker, Friday April 19th at the Mobtown Theater at Meadow Mill in Baltimore. During this ep, Mark shares stories about his battles with bullies in middle school and high school, his contributions to BROS, his start in comedy, and the music he makes under the moniker, MARKITECT. Kathy talks about working with children for her past job at Lifetouch, growing up with goats, comedy, and her love of Gain detergent.
