Barry L sober in 1945, speaking about the origin of the 3rd tradition at the 50th World Conference in Montreal in July 1985. He was the first openly gay member of AA.  Tradition 3 - The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking. Barry passed away 3 weeks after this speak. Barry is the author of the book Living Sober and was a great friend of Bill W and his wife Lois. In 1978 Lois gave the original manuscript of the big book to Barry, and in 1979 Barry signed a notarized letter gifting the manuscript to A.A. World Services. In exchange, he asked only to be able to keep it in his possession until his death. Somewhere between 1979 and Barry's death in 1985, everyone at A.A. World Services apparently forgot about this arrangement. The whereabouts of the manuscript remained unknown until it reappeared at an auction house in 2004, sold by a “Joseph B.” for $1.5 million. It was auctioned again in 2007 to Alabama resident Ken Roberts for $992,000.  A few months later, according to court documents, A.A. World Services rediscovered Barry's notarized letter.   In 2018 the manuscript was once again auctioned off, this time for $2.4 million.             The noted author and teacher, Joseph B. Atkins, is a veteran writer and professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Mississippi.             Joe's latest book, Harry Dean Stanton: Hollywood's Zen Rebel, won the Bronze Award for biography from the Independent Publisher Book Awards in 2021.             Regarding Joe's novel, Casey's Last Chance, Edgar Award-winning author Megan Abbott called it, “…pitch-perfect vintage noir.”             Among his other notable works, Joe authored the nonfiction Covering for the Bosses: Labor and the Southern Press. And his novella, Crossed Roads, was a finalist in the Pirate's Alley Faulkner Awards in New Orleans. Joe also edited and contributed to the short story collection Mojo Rising: Contemporary Writers, Vol. II.             His articles and short stories have appeared in The Oxford American, Noir City, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, USA Today, Baltimore Sun, In These Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and the Guadalajara Reporter.             Joe's feature film screenplay, Memphis Tango, was a finalist in the 2021 Final Draft Screenplay Competition and Toronto and Vancouver independent film festivals.       He served as a congressional correspondent for Gannett News Service in Washington, D.C. and worked for several newspapers across the U.S. South. I've read both Harry Dean Stanton: Hollywood's Zen Rebel and Casey's Last Chance and can tell you that Joe has remarkable range. His book on Harry Dean Stanton is a fascinating, in-depth look at one of the most beloved yet unsung actors Hollywood has ever produced. And Casey's Last Chance is a ripping, action-filled, page-turner. I highly recommend both books to you.

Synopsis Today in 1825, one of Beethoven's late chamber works, his String Quartet in E-flat, Op. 127, received its premiere in Vienna by the Schuppanzigh Quartet. The Quartet had only received the music two weeks earlier, which, in those days, would be plenty of time for experienced musicians to work up a normal string quartet of that day. But Beethoven's new quartet was harmonically and structurally far from the norm for 1825. Even Beethoven knew as much, and drafted a humorous "contract" for himself and the four musicians to sign. It read: "Each one is herewith given his part and is bound by oath and pledged on his honor to do his best, to distinguish himself and to vie with the other in excellence. Signed: Schuppanzigh, Weiss, Linke, the grand master's accursed cellist Holtz, and the last, but only in signing, Beethoven." Even so, the premiere was under-rehearsed, and the players seemed visibly unhappy with their difficult assignment. Fortunately, Beethoven was not present, but when he learned of the poor performance, he was furious. He immediately contacted another violinist, Joseph Böhm, whose quartet meticulously rehearsed the new piece under the composer's watchful eye. Their performance was better received, and in April of 1825, Böhm took the unusual step of programming the difficult new work TWICE on the same program. As a contemporary review put it, this time, "the misty veil disappeared and Beethoven's splendid work of art radiated its dazzling glory." Music Played in Today's Program Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) String Quartet in Eb, Op. 127 LaSalle Quartet DG 453 768

Did you know that Rhode Island native, Albert Smith is a former football player, coach, scout, and executive? He served as a part-time scout for several NFL and USFL teams before joining the Buffalo Bills in 1986, serving as a scout and executive for them for 14 years. With the Bills, the team won four AFC Championships. He joined the San Diego Chargers in 2001 as a director of pro personnel, and was promoted to general manager and executive vice president for them two years later. He stayed with the Chargers until being fired following the 2012 season. Happy New Year's Eve! Next, an event that you should know about… It's New Year's Eve. And now is traditionally when we'd tell you about all the parties and fun things going on in the community. But Covid is spreading again. Be safe, have fun, and ring in, hopefully, a more hopeful 2022. Tomorrow at noon, The Warm center is hosting their annual penguin plunge at the Windjammer surf bar to raise money for those in need in summer rhode island. Tickets are $25. We'll see you there! Today we're remembering the life of Joseph B. Bliven, loving husband and father. Joe was born in 1942 in Westerly. During his youth, Joe was known by his middle name Brian. He had four daughters by his first marriage and on July 14, 1974, he married the love of his life, Alice combining their two families into one. Joe enjoyed working with his hands and spent most of his professional life as a press mechanic, most notably for Harris Seybold and Dartmouth Printing. He also worked as a machinist and after retirement, spent many hours in his workshop, making beautiful wood creations to sell at craft fairs. He was especially proud of his intricate marble machines. In 1978, Joe and Alice moved to Enfield, New Hampshire with their six children. Joe loved working with large animals and spent many years traveling in New England with his oxen as a member of the New England Ox Teamsters. After a move to Vermont, Joe owned horses and learned to drive carriages for competition. Late in his life, Joe and Alice went on a "great adventure" and lived in Greensburg, KY for several years until Joe's health made it necessary to move back to be nearer family. Joe was a kind and humble man. He was always willing to show and teach about things he knew, or things he did, but never one to brag of his accomplishments. Always the quiet one in the conversation, Joe never drew attention to himself but willingly shared his wisdom with those who needed it. Joe is survived by his wife, his daughters, his sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, his mother, and his brother. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Joe's life. Lastly, remember that reporting the local news is an important part of what it means to live here. “As rational beings and moral agents, it's incumbent on us to use our faculties to the best of our abilities.” Philosophy professors Steven Nadler and Lawrence Shapiro are here, discussing their new book When Bad Thinking Happens to Good People. In it, they show how we can more readily spot and avoid flawed arguments and unreliable information; determine whether evidence supports or contradicts an idea; distinguish between merely believing something and knowing it; and much more. In doing so, the book reveals how epistemology, which addresses the nature of belief and knowledge, and ethics, the study of moral principles that should govern our behavior, can reduce bad thinking. Moreover, the book shows why philosophy's millennia-old advice about how to lead a good, rational, and examined life is essential for escaping our current predicament. Support Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk. Professor Nadler's research focuses on philosophy in the seventeenth century. He has written extensively on Descartes and Cartesianism, Spinoza, and Leibniz. He also works on medieval and early modern Jewish philosophy. His publications include Spinoza: A Life (Cambridge, 1999; second edition, 2018); The Best of All Possible Worlds: A Story of Philosophers, God, and Evil (Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, 2008; paperback, Princeton 2010); The Cambridge History of Jewish Philosophy: From Antiquity through the Seventeenth Century (2009), co-edited with Tamar Rudavsky; A Book Forged in Hell: Spinoza's Scandalous Treatise and the Birth of the Secular Age (Princeton, 2011) and The Philosopher, the Priest, and the Painter: A Portrait of Descartes (Princeton, 2013). Heretics: The Wondrous (and Dangerous) Beginnings of Modern Philosophy (Princeton University Press), a graphic book (with Ben Nadler), was published in 2017. His most recent books are Menasseh ben Israel: Rabbi of Amsterdam (“Jewish Lives”, Yale, 2018) and Think Least of Death: Spinoza on How to Live and How to Die (Princeton, 2020). He is also co-editor of The Oxford Handbook to Descartes and Cartesianism (2019), among other volumes. Professor Shapiro's research spans philosophy of mind and philosophy of psychology. Within philosophy of mind he has focused on issues related to reduction, especially concerning the thesis of multiple realization. His books The Mind Incarnate (MIT, 2004) and The Multiple Realization Book (co-authored with Professor Thomas Polger at U. of Cincinnati, Oxford University Press, 2016) as well as articles in The Journal of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, and Philosophy and Phenomenological Research examine these issues. His interests in philosophy of psychology include topics in computational theories of vision, evolutionary psychology, and embodied cognition. He's published numerous articles on these topics in journals such as The Philosophical Review, British Journal for Philosophy of Science, and Philosophy of Science. His book, Embodied Cognition (Routledge Press), received the American Philosophical Association's Joseph B. Gittler Award for best book in philosophy of the social sciences (2013) and is now in its second edition (2019). His recent interest in philosophy of religion resulted in The Miracle Myth: Why Belief in the Resurrection and the Supernatural is Unjustified (Columbia University Press, 2016).

He was the founder and longtime CEO of The Monitor Group, the global strategy consulting firm, now Monitor Deloitte. In this episode, MBO Partners speaks with Professor Fuller about what, in this time of rapid change, the term “the future of work” actually means and how we can apply his learnings to workforce design and transformation. Professor Fuller also talks about what he sees as the biggest challenges facing today's CEO and organizational management and how many of those top requirements for organizational success involve changes to aspects of talent development and sourcing, including contingent work; digitalization and decentralization; diversity and inclusion; globalization and the labor supply chain. He discusses a recent BCG and HBS Future of Work study on the topic of contingent work and discuss how, in the future, more and more organizations will have needs for high-skill contingent talent for business-critical assignments – and how this is shifting the power equation in favor of the supply side of the talent equation. He also provides a look at the higher education sector and discuss the role of credentialization in talent acquisition. Citing his soon-to-be-published research, Professor Fuller talks about the ways AI is poised to improve and expand talent profile of companies in the future – a profile that will begin to also include the contingent worker to a greater degree.
