In this episode of Elixir Wizards, hosts Charles Suggs and Emma Whamond sit down with Saša Jurić, Elixir mentor and author of Elixir in Action, to discuss software craftsmanship in the age of AI. As AI coding tools become increasingly capable, Saša argues that the real challenge isn't generating code, it's maintaining quality, clarity, and shared understanding within a codebase. We explore the difference between correct code and good code, and why code is more than a set of instructions for a machine to execute. Code is also documentation, communication, and a long-term investment that future developers must be able to understand and maintain. Saša shares his concerns about the growing "theater of pull requests," where teams go through the motions of code review without creating meaningful opportunities for learning, feedback, or knowledge sharing. The hosts and Saša talk about practical ways to work effectively with AI, including taking smaller steps, carefully reviewing AI-generated code, and using AI as a collaborative tool rather than an autonomous developer. Throughout the discussion, Saša challenges the industry's obsession with speed and makes the case that the principles of good software development (incremental progress, clear communication, and human judgment) remain important in the age of AI. Key Topics Discussed The difference between correct code and good code Code as communication, documentation, and shared understanding The "theater of pull requests" and ineffective review practices How AI is changing software development workflows Using AI as a collaborator rather than a replacement Why smaller, incremental changes lead to better outcomes Human oversight in AI-assisted development Balancing development speed with maintainability Pull request size and review effectiveness Commit history as a tool for storytelling and context The risks of accumulating technical debt faster with AI Testing and validating AI-generated code Refactoring AI-generated solutions for clarity Applying agile principles to AI-assisted workflows The role of experience and judgment in software design Why software craftsmanship still matters in the age of AI Links mentioned Code Complete by Steve McConnell https://khmerbamboo.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/code-complete-2nd-edition-v413hav.pdf Harness AI for DevOps, Testing, and AppSec https://www.harness.io/ Claude Code https://claude.com/product/claude-code Claude Code GitHub https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code Pull Request for Oban https://github.com/oban-bg/oban/pull/331 SMPP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Message_Peer-to-Peer OpenAI Codex https://chatgpt.com/codex/ Opus AI https://opus.ai/ Tidewave https://tidewave.ai/ Credo Static Code Analysis https://github.com/rrrene/credo https://smartlogic.io/podcast/elixir-wizards/s11-e09-static-code-analyzer-elixir-credo-ruby-rubocop/ Link to Sasa's X post https://x.com/sasajuric/status/2029522378196238503 Saša Jurić “Tell Me A Story” at Goatmire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOrKfCs-mr0 https://meks.quest/blogs/the-theatre-of-pull-requests-and-code-review Looks Good to Me: Constructive Code Reviews by Adrienne Braganza https://www.manning.com/books/looks-good-to-me Towards Maintainable Elixir: Testing https://medium.com/very-big-things/towards-maintainable-elixir-testing-b32ac0604b99 TDD, Where Did It All Go Wrong (Ian Cooper) https://youtu.be/EZ05e7EMOLMSpecial Guest: Saša Jurić.

In this episode, Tommaso and Kimberly share their recent 36-hour trip to Venice. They talk about what to do in Venice when you have no agenda and want to see the real Venice. Tommaso and Kimberly also discuss their amazing meal and their visit to the Leonardo da Vinci Museum. Please follow us on: Instagram or Facebook ! If you enjoy our podcast please leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, Grazie Mille! Key Points: Getting Lost in Venice: Tommaso shares that getting lost in Venice is not an accident. The city is designed to disorient you. When you get lost in Venice, you start to feel the history in your bones. Head to the smaller neighborhoods to avoid crowds. The smaller the alley, the better. Amazing Food: Tommaso and Kimberly had an amazing lunch in Venice at a place that only has one seating from noon to 2 PM. Tommaso said he had the best mussels of his life. Kimberly enjoyed a spicy red tomato sauce with shrimp pasta and dark bread. They found a bar on a quiet canal to enjoy a scotch ( OBAN!) . Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum: This museum is not a dusty art museum. Everything is interactive. The museum shows how one man's mind worked. Leonardo designed flying machines, hydraulic systems, military inventions, surgical tools, and astronomical instruments. Tommaso discusses Leonardo's 33-barreled organ gun, which solved the problem of slow reloading 15th-century weapons. Kimberly points out that Leonardo invented surgical tools. Piazza San Marco: Tommaso and Kimberly visited Cafe Florian in Piazza San Marco, where they danced alone 30 years ago. There was a four-piece band playing in the Piazza, and everyone applauded after each song. Tommaso encourages parents to take away their children's phones so they can experience the magic of Piazza San Marco. Unexpected Encounters: Tommaso visited a bookstore called Mare di Catta, which is both a bookstore and a publisher. He met the owner, Christina, who is a native Venetian and is fluent in several languages. Christina knows Andrea Valicelli, a naval architect who designed yachts, and Tommaso hopes to interview her about Venice's maritime history. Join Tommaso and Kimberly as they share their unique experiences in Venice, offering a different perspective on how to explore this historic city.

Word of mouth is the absolute best way to support any creative endeavor. Spring is a good time to think about energy. The energy we put into the world. The energy we draw from it. Clean energy — solar and wind — is now the cheapest power available. Not someday. Now. Renewable energy means lower bills, more independence, and a planet that stays worth exploring. The Celtic lands we love — Ireland, Scotland, the windswept coasts and green hills — they're worth protecting. So are the ones right outside your door. Small choices add up. Switch to a renewable energy provider if you can. Put Ecosia in your browser and let your searches plant trees. Walk outside this April. Pick up one piece of trash. None of it is hard. All of it matters. The same spirit that carries Celtic music forward — community, resilience, love of the land — is the same spirit that keeps this planet alive. Let's carry that forward too.
According to an AI analysis touted by thrice-failed statewide candidate Rick Becker, who is currently seeking a seat in the state Legislature in District 7, I'm a narcissist with obsessive compulsive disorder because I write too many articles about him. Is that an accurate diagnosis, or is this a case of yet another whiny politician trying to throw dirt on apt criticisms? We discussed it on this episode of Plain Talk, and whille me and co-host Chad Oban didn't agree with the criticism, we did find Becker's method to be a creative one, if perhaps more reflective of his mental state than mine. Also, Sen. Kevin Cramer recently wrote a letter to the editor criticizing me for suggesting that former Sec. of Homeland Security Kristi Noem (who is now apparently one of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or something?) was scapegoated for the Trump administration's disastrous application of immigration policies in Minnesota and beyond. Oban argues that the rampant fraud in Minnesota's safety net programs which ended Gov. Tim Walz's political career ended up being overshadowed by the too-aggressive tactics engaged in by ICE. "I think the fraud thing would have also killed Penny Flanigan's, his lieutenant governor, race for US Senate if it hadn't been for the ICE thing," Oban said. "And now she's back up in the polls against Angie Craig for that Senate primary, because there's less focus on the fraud and more focus on the ICE piece." "I think it was just a weird pitch for Cramer to swing at here," he continued. Also on this episode, we discuss the war in Iran, and the potential blowback we may face in economic challenges and terrorism, as well as Sec. of Defense Pete Hegseth's status as a callow, fragile poseur who has no business in his current job. Plus, North Dakotans are still paying a local price for federal dysfunction as a local domestic violence nonprofit in Grand Forks faces hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue shortfalls due to delays in federal funding. District 7, in the Bismarck area, will be a battleground in North Dakota's legislative races this cycle. Republicans have two full slates of candidates for the one Senate and two House seats, and once the primary settles that dispute, the Democrats are also fielding their own three candidates. One of those candidates, Jason Thoms, a professional musician who is seeking a House seat for the Democratic-NPL, joined this episode of Plain Talk, and talked about some of the factionalism that he sees across the partisan divide in the NDGOP. "To me, one of the things that I've been noticing a lot is more and more we have this kind of, I guess you call it MAGA, experience in our country. It says that what the leader or what the party says needs to happen overrides what the people say." "Those kind of things, I don't know, they frustrate me quite a bit," he continued. Thoms says his campaign will focus on issues important to him, including mental health, something he has a deeply personal experience with. "My wife died by suicide in 2020, and she had struggled for throughout her entire life, but she was an amazing and wonderful person. We fought we fought hard for her life," he said. "Suicide is one of these words that we kind of try to make a taboo, we hide away from, but I'm 100% against that," he continued. "We need to talk about those things. We need to make sure that we have the resources, the 988 phone lines are working and they're funded. We need to make sure that the opportunity for folks in rural communities, and here in the larger cities, have the ability to get into mental health therapy and things like this on a timely basis." Also on this episode, co-host Chad Oban and I respond to listener feedback and discuss the strong candidate recruitment efforts of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL. We also talked about the decision by the North Dakota Republican Party's candidates not to seek their party's convention endorsement. "The purpose of a political party is to win elections, and if people who are winning elections don't want to associate with you, what are you doing?" Oban asked. If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. This episode Jon, Judy, and Marlys sample the first four of 8 experimental whiskies from some fantastic distilleries under the Diageo umbrella.
"The piece takes its cue from McCaig's Tower in Oban, Scotland—not as an architectural curiosity, but as an acoustic world. It begins and ends with the finches that inhabit the open structure, their calls forming the work's natural frame. "The music moves through evolving motifs: a peaceful drone and the suggestion of bagpipes represent the quiet of the unfinished enclosure overlooking the town and bay of Oban and a little of the builder's proud, almost overreaching ambition; a more measured, tread-like pulse created from footsteps in the field recording, suggests generations of visitors drifting through the space; and a light, agile texture depicts the birds' restless motion. "Finally the pipes return as grandeur brushes against melancholy. The finches, ever-present, attend to their own concerns." Finches in McCaig's Tower reimagined by Martin Gregory.
In McCaig's Tower, overlooking the bustling harbour town of Oban, finches call out from all sides as we walk around the inside of the tower walls, while the hum of the harbour rises up the hill from below us. Recorded in Oban, Scotland by Cities and Memory in April 2025.
Send us a textThe list dropped and the takes are hot. We kick things off with the new Whiskey Advocate Top 20—Elijah Craig A925 at the top, Oban 15 sliding in at number two, and a well-earned spotlight on Maker's Mark Cellar Aged—then we turn the conversation toward a bottle that always hit the spot: Weller Full Proof. If you've ever wondered how proof and filtration change a bourbon's soul, this is your pour.We walk through the Weller family by color and proof and then slow down on the blue label. Non-chill filtered at 114, Full Proof carries a dessert-like nose—brown sugar, caramelized wood, a hint of cinnamon—before shifting into an oak-driven, slightly drying finish with a layered spice profile. One of us wants the nose's sugar to stretch longer; the other leans into the structure, texture, and tannin that make it a weeder with backbone. Along the way, we unpack why chill filtering matters, what happens when you leave the oils in, and how a splash of water can coax sweetness forward without muting character.Price and access are part of the story. At $70 for a good store pick, Full Proof feels like a win; at inflated tags or secondary levels, the value case gets tougher. We get practical about finding bottles—build relationships, learn the color code, and time your visits—and we tip the cap to history, tracing Weller's roots through Stitzel-Weller to the Pappy mash philosophy. The bigger theme is clear: quality is everywhere, and the right bottle depends on your proof tolerance and palate goals. If bold, textured wheaters are your lane, blue might be your new weeknight flex. If you want softer sweetness, the 12 Year or Special Reserve may hit just right. Pour something you love, then press play and taste along with us. Enjoyed the breakdown? Follow, share with a whiskey friend, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find the show.

After a federal judge imposed a new district map on the State of North Dakota, former Sen. Judy Estenson lost her seat in the state legislature. That's unfair, she argued in a recent letter to the editor of the Minot Daily News, and on this episode of Plain Talk. "I am deeply frustrated that a judge's decision could undo the will of the voters who elected me in 2022," Estenson said. "I am angry that a midcycle court order forced me from from office, deprived district 15 of its chosen senator, and reship district 9 in a way that made it nearly impossible for me or any Republican to win." Co-host Chad Oban rebutted that last claim from Estenson, pointing out that a Republican who ran with Estenson almost did win in the last election, even after redistricting, but the former Senator is correct that legal wrangling over North Dakota's district map has created headaches. The legal fight is still ongoing, too, making the map for the upcoming 2026 election something less than certain. Estenson, an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump wand whose family is involved in ranching, also commented on the impact tariffs are having on production agriculture. As many as "20 to 30% of small farmers could go out of business and not be able to continue," Estenson, a former candidate for Agriculture Commissioner, told us. While she says she supports Trump's efforts to address "unfair trade practices," she's not certain what the future holds. "I don't think anyone really knows what the end result will be of all these tariffs. I certainly don't." Also on this episode, Oban and I discuss the absurd call on newly-appointed Rep. Dustin McNally to resign from his seat in District 42, the potential impact of data centers on power rates, and outlook for the Yankees and the Dodgers in the post season. Should the voters take their case for covering school lunches for all students to the ballot box with an initiated measure? We discussed the issue on this episode of Plain Talk, and co-host Chad Oban made the case for some populism on this issue. "The legislature has had ample opportunity to pass something that over 70% of North Dakotans support," he said, referring to a North Dakota News Cooperative poll from this spring. "What if school districts start charging parents for books, right? Parents across the state would be up in arms if school districts started charging for books," he continued. "To me, it's a no-brainer today. It was a no-brainer yesterday. It was a no-brainer a year ago." President Donald Trump's early endorsement of Rep. Julie Fedorchak's re-election, which hadn't even been officially announced yet, raised some eyebrows. What drove it? It might have something to do with divisive ."I didn't perceive Julie Fedorchak needing Trump to intervene and try to head off a primary challenge," I argued, but it could be about the North Dakota Republican Party, the leadership of which is now in control of a populist faction that doesn't like traditional Republicans very much. That faction has already censured Gov. Kelly Armstrong twice, and at last cycle's state convention, they had enough clout to deny Fedorchak the endorsement, though she went on to win the primary and the general handily. Trump's early endorsement may have been to "warn off the state party," I contend. North Dakotan Blaize Shiek is a cheerleader for the Minnesota Vikings this year, and not everyone likes it. "This isn't about male cheerleaders. This is about a certain type of male cheerleaders. Ones that are very good dancers and not just holding up the pretty girls," Oban said of the critics. "I don't like it when people take it upon themselves to be gatekeepers and to say we're going to gatekeep football or we're going to gatekeep culture and we're going to say you can only do it our way only the way that we want it," I added. "Being weird in all the different wonderful ways we can be weird is not un-American. That's the most American damn thing in the world. What's un-American is you saying there's only one way to be an American." We also discussed North Dakota Health and Human Services Commissioner Pat Traynor's alarmist comments about cell phones, and state Rep. Emily O'Brien's decision to step down and take a job as deputy commissioner in that same department. If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. I spent a little time on this episode of Plain Talk bemoaning the horrendous performance of my beloved New York Yankees. Poor roster construction and poor fundamental play are difficult things to watch. Co-host Chad Oban ate it up, as you might imagine, but baseball isn't all we discussed. We touched on the baffling controversy over Sydney Sweeney's jeans commercial. For some reason, this has convulsed the nation, starting with left-wing critics who claim the ad promotes some master race message about eugenics, which of course inspired the MAGA crowd to rally around Sweeney as their new hero. It makes me wonder if comedian and actor Marc Maron is right when he says that progressives have "annoyed the average American into fascism." Shifting to North Dakota politics, we talked about Fargo leaders trying to pin their budget woes on property tax reform. I argued on the podcast, and in a previous column, that Mayor Tim Mahoney's budget is calculated to produce political talking points, not solutions, and Oban agreed, pointing out that Fargo's fiscal problems predate the 3% spending cap passed earlier this year. We addressed my controversial story about education lobbyist Aimee Copas and her alleged activities at a Mandan waterpark as detailed in a police report. I got flak from some who said that the story wasn't news. My argument? Copas, the executive director of the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders, is one of the most consequential people in North Dakota when it comes to education policy. When a police report alleges that she and her husband were engaging in sexual activities in public, at a water park, the public deserves to know about it. Also on this episode, we cover the delays in Superintendent Kirsten Baesler's appointment to a position in the Trump administration, and whether or not her bid might be scuttled by opposition from the MAGA right. Plus, North Dakota's new porn verification law probably isn't stopping anyone from watching porn on the internet. If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. On this episode of Plain Talk, my co-host Chad Oban and I talk about the crazy Minot mayoral race, evidence of extremism in the North Dakota Young Republicans, and the controversy over bonuses paid to Commerce Department employees. The Minot race, in some ways, is an important bellwether for North Dakota politics, taking place as it is in one of the most partisan Republican communities in the state. The race is officially nonpartisan, but pits two candidates from the far right against two mainstream, traditional, right-of-center candidates. Can one of the far-right candidates win, and take over leadership of one of North Dakota's largest communities? A lot of it depends on who turns up at an oddball, off-year, August 5 special election. "There's real statewide ramifications for this," Oban said. We also discussed evidence that the North Dakota Young Republicans, an independent group loosely affiliated with the North Dakota Republican Party, are aligning themselves with a bigoted Holocaust denier. At the very least, association with people who believe and say some truly despicable things doesn't seem to be much of a drawback for Republicans in 2025. This stuff is "increasingly mainstream," I argue, and Oban says it's "a frightening proposition for 10, 15 years from now," as it shapes the next generation of Republican leaders. Voters need to be cognizant of the individuals they're voting for. This is a time of political transition, and increasingly, party labels don't mean what they once did. As for the Commerce Department controversy, after we recorded this episode, Commerce Commissioner Chris Schilken said they wouldn't be issuing the bonuses, and apologized to lawmakers for issuing them. I argued that paying bonuses like this through irregular budget practices can "hide the football a little bit" from taxpayers when it comes to how much public employees are getting paid. If you were to look up Schilken's annual salary, or that of any of the other top Commerce Department officials who received the bonuses, it likely wouldn't take into account the additional pay. That's not very transparent. If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. Anna Hill finds out how new farming technology could mean more jobs, not fewer. A new report from The Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture says the expansion of artificial intelligence apps collecting data and providing real-time advice will mean recruiting and training more people, to give farmers technical support. In Northern Ireland, stealing farm animals is being linked to organised crime, and it seems the current high stock values are making them even more attractive to criminals. As arable farmers wait for their crops to ripen in the fields, many are watching grain prices carefully. Grain isn't just a domestic commodity, but is traded worldwide...and aspects like exchange rates, and President Trump's new tariffs make a big difference to the price. And we visit the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban, where scientists are embarking on a new five-year international research project looking at the economics of extracting various products from seaweed, as well as assessing the climate resilience of different species...and even training up new seaweed farmers.Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons
