Here's another tune that Danny Cox has brought to us from his decades of lovingly listening to Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed's famous recordings. One of Jerry's composition, “Baby's Coming Home” is a standout tune that was introduced on 1974's landmark Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed album. As reported here earlier, Atkins and Reed were not only esteemed guitarists but also good friends who shared a profound musical chemistry. A major figure at RCA, Atkins was instrumental in bringing Reed to the label. The album testified to Atkins' continued endorsement of the younger man's talent, showcasing interpretation of 10 of Reed's unique and often humorous compositions. Chet and Jerry were known for their distinct fingerpicking styles, drawing inspiration from pioneers like Merle Travis and incorporating their own original, complex techniques. This is what attracted Danny Cox to their work when he was still just a teenager learning to pick.About the SongJerry Reed wrote “Baby's Coming Home” around the time Chet was coming up with the plans for his 1974 tribute album. Atkins' rendering of the song is the first track of the disc's B side. Incidentally Jerry himself performed on only two of the album's tracks (”Squirrely” and “Mister Lucky,” and sadly not on “Baby's Coming Home”). However, a few years later, he and Chet did pick the tune together on TV. That wonderful, light-hearted segment was preserved on this YouTube video:A Muppet MomentBy the way, four years later, “Baby's Coming Home” made a curious comeback. This time with a tuba-and-banjo-heavy Dixieland-flavored arrangement, the song was the soundtrack for a sketch called “Lunchtime” during Episode 316 of The Muppet Show. Check this out:More Atkins-Reed Collaboration Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed reminded many fans of Chet's Grammy-winning 1970 Me and Jerry release, an all-acoustic, instrumental album that featured the two buddies teamed up on a range of songs, from country and pop covers to original instrumental workouts.Several decades later, this collaboration was followed by another celebrated joint effort, the 1993 Grammy-winning Sneakin' Around album. It seems we've always had monsters among us. We've long been enthralled by dragons and and giants, by the likes of Frankenstein and Godzilla and Dracula, by witches and werewolves and countless others. They roam our maps and creation myths; they crop up in our dreams, in our children's books, in our political rhetoric. Where do these beings spring from? What do they do for us? How have they changed over time? And, ultimately, what do our monsters say about their makers? My guests today are Dr. Natalie Lawrence and Dr. Surekha Davies. Both are historians of science and authors of recent books on monsters: Natalie's book is Enchanted creatures: Our monsters and their meanings. Surekha's book is Humans: A monstrous history. Here, Surekha, Natalie, and I talk about monsters as category breakers and boundary walkers—and about how monstrosity is in the eye of the beholder. We walk through a menagerie of monsters—from the apocryphal blemmyes of old travelogues, to a hairy-faced girl in 16th century France, to the figure of Caliban in The Tempest. We discuss the psychological and cultural forces that generate monsters. And we talk about whether anyone would want to live in a world without them. Along the way we touch on, the "monstrification" of social groups; psychoanalysis; our primal fear of snakes; curiosity cabinets; therianthropes and the Cave of the Three Brothers; the relationship between the monstrosity and geography; our long fascination with so-called monstrous births; the Muppet Show; dinosaurs and sea creatures; and the question what monsters might do for children in particular. Alright friends, it's the monstrous season and this is a fun one to help you celebrate. Enjoy! Notes 3:00 – Grendel's mother has often been a subject of critical discussion and adaptation. See, for instance, the 2018 novel, The Mere Wife. 12:30 – For a classic history-of-science treatment of “wonders” (including monsters) and our conceptions of nature, see here. 18:30 – For those unfamiliar with muppets, an episode of the Muppet Show, which premiered in 1976. 24:00 – The blemmyes were often the subjects of illustration—for examples, see here. 26:00 – For more on Sir Walter Raleigh and the blemmyes, see Dr. Davies' recent newsletter post. 29:00 – One example of monsters at the margins of maps can be seen in the Psalter World Map. 32:00 – For more on Cave of the Trois Freres and the Sorcerer, see here. 34:00 – For more on shamanism, see our recent episode with Manvir Singh. 37:00 – Therianthropes are relatively rare in cave art, but have nonetheless been widely discussed. This week, your favorite ex-puppeteers once again spin the magical monthly muppet wheel, where it landed on guest star Señor Wences proving that sometimes the funniest puppets are literally on the back of your hand.Armed with his fist-faced friend “Johnny” and the ever-squished “Pedro,” Wences brought his old-school ventriloquism into the Muppet Theatre—and somehow kept a straight face while sharing the stage with comedian bears, diva pigs, and a frog with chronic stress. It was a mashup of vaudeville minimalism and Muppet maximalism, and the result? Pure “'S'alright!”We'll revisit the sketches, unpack the backstage chaos, and ask the big questions: Did Pedro ever get claustrophobic? And how did Kermit keep things together when half his cast was made of felt and the other half was literally someone's left hand?Because when the Muppets meet Señor Wences, the only possible review is… 'S'alright!Join the discussion on our discord! https://discord.gg/JDtWJrhPF6Follow us on twitter @PMoNPodcast and on Instagram and Threads @puppetmastersofnoneFind out more about the puppet masters on our website: https://puppetmastersofnone.wixsite.com/puppetmastersofnoneOriginal Music Composed by Taetro. @Taetro https://www.taetro.com/Send us a text

The Nerds are back to break down the week in the Nerdosphere. It begins with a review of Episode 5, Season 2, of Peacemaker. Some major events took place in this Episode as Peacemaker has to pay for some of his prior sins, and he makes a huge decision that could have significant consequences for the DCU. A very stripped-down trailer park looks at True Hauntings and the Jack Black led remake of Anaconda. In other news, The Muppet Show is, in fact, making a comeback, Martin Scorsese opts to try his hand at a ghost story, and is Netflix angling to purchase Warner Bros? The guys also pay their respect to the legendary Robert Redford. All that, plus the guys take a look at the Jimmy Kimmel controversy and why the issues in play run a lot deeper than a show being canceled.Powered by RedCircle@AttitudeAgg@WrestlngRealist@itsReyCash@PCTunney@itsmedpp@ViolentAesop@TheMindlessPod@therealcplatt@ChairshotMedia@BandwagonNerdsPROWRESTLINGTEES.COM/TheChairshot - Makes a GREAT GIFT!!!About Bandwagon NerdsJoin Patrick O'Dowd, David Ungar, PC Tunney, Rey Cash, and DPP as they keep everyone up on all things nerd and maybe add some new nerds along the way. While there are fun things to talk about, like the Muppets returning, Nintendo directs, the 90s Console wars, and the new Anaconda. There are also not fun things, like Nintendo and Pokémon behind paywalls, HBO and passwords, and The Long Walk. This week, our two former puppeteers revisit the delightfully bizarre—and terribly provocative—Peter Sellers episode of The Muppet Show. Sellers arrives not as himself, but as every outrageously caricatured persona you can imagine: a fiddle-playing Romani, an overbearing German masseuse channeling Dr. Strangelove, a regal (and bearded) Queen Victoria, and a cryptic cameo as Inspector Clouseau himself. We celebrate Sellers' chameleon-like genius—but we also confront the problematic stereotypes. Many sketches now come with legitimate cultural baggage. The torqued-up massage gag, for example, walks a fine line between homage and grotesque parody. All the while, Sellers' famous existential quip—"There is no me… I had it surgically removed"—adds an unsettling and surreal layer to the slapstick.Making this episode even more a mixed bag, we find a legendary performance from Kermit that is equal parts beautiful and empowering. Join us as we unpack the comedy, the controversy, and the poetry of this episode; and why revisiting it forces us to laugh, cringe, and reflect—all at once.Join the discussion on our discord! https://discord.gg/JDtWJrhPF6Follow us on twitter @PMoNPodcast and on Instagram and Threads @puppetmastersofnoneFind out more about the puppet masters on our website: https://puppetmastersofnone.wixsite.com/puppetmastersofnoneOriginal Music Composed by Taetro. @Taetro https://www.taetro.com/Send us a text
This week, on PMoN your favorite ex-puppeteers leap headfirst into The Frog Prince—the 1971 Muppet television special that proved true love's kiss is even weirder when the smooch involves felt.We revisit Kermit in his pre-Muppet Show side hustle, meet Robin the Frog in his debut role, and marvel at the gloriously oddball supporting cast (looking at you, witchy Taminella Grinderfall). Along the way, we hop through the special's fairy-tale roots, behind-the-scenes Henson magic, and the slightly alarming amount of medieval lute music. It's part nostalgia trip, part puppet masterclass, and entirely an excuse to say “bake the hall in the candle of her brain” into a microphone over and over again.Because while we may not have our hand in puppetry anymore… we still know our way around a lily pad.Join the discussion on our discord! https://discord.gg/JDtWJrhPF6Follow us on twitter @PMoNPodcast and on Instagram and Threads @puppetmastersofnoneFind out more about the puppet masters on our website: https://puppetmastersofnone.wixsite.com/puppetmastersofnoneOriginal Music Composed by Taetro. @Taetro https://www.taetro.com/Send us a text
The Muppet Show is going country (again) and live on the radio (somehow). We're going to Jackson but that doesn't answer any of our questions about where the theatre is…though the prominently displayed Confederate Flag suggests it might be somewhere south of Pittsburgh. But hey you can do worse than a Johnny Cash concert with Muppet chickens in tiny cowboy hats, and you can definitely do worse than listening to us talk about it! https://muppeturgy.com/episodes/johnny-cash
One of the most popular film and tv comics ever (with some novelty tunes tossed in for good measure), Danny Kaye delighted audiences with his wordplay whether remembering if "the vessel with the pestle has the brew that it true," speeding through the names of dozens of Russian composers, or engaging is some good natured "faux-Swedish" dialogue on the Muppet Show. Danny was also a humanitarian, serving as the first goodwill ambassador for the United Nations' children's charity UNICEF. Danny was also a part owner of a famed Seattle recording studio (Kaye-Smith) and an initial investor in the Seattle Mariners. We would report what he did in his spare time, but it appears he didn't have any! As always find extended cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Danny Kaye? Any child of the 50s knows this bit of wordplay magic. The vessel with the pestle. . .https://youtu.be/WzmnSyqv37A?si=v6TNh8A2FZfYStpA See if you can keep up with Danny as he rolls through Russian composers in this gem taken from the musical "Lady in the Dark". https://youtu.be/KJm1pvOyyXc?si=_Zq_e893UXJh635_ Danny was a prolific novelty song artist and one of his best was a tribute to his beloved Dodgers. Oh, really? No -- O'Malley!" https://youtu.be/zBQlbtJqjUI?si=jtCNe9wP00UZAo4M Danny Kaye was a welcome presence on television anytime he appeared, and one of his best late career spots was on The Muppets Show. https://youtu.be/MyLTknMEiR4?si=vrftANsa7RmPx_eP
At first blush, this episode may look a bit slapdash, but it actually reflects very much where I am at this moment. It's got a bit more of a narrative than most of my episodes do, and somehow in this story a number of different strands come together. The starting point was a Pride bonus episode I published in June 2024 exploring a rare and fascinating 1964 LP of a live recital by “female impersonator” (Mr.) Jean Fredericks that also somehow folded into the mix hidden family narratives, Gilbert Godfrey, Charles Fox, Jim Croce, and the song “I Got a Name.” I have taken that episode and both streamlined and expanded it, including memorial tributes to four significant artists who have died in the past several weeks: Connie Francis, Tom Lehrer, Cleo Laine, and (just yesterday) Robert Wilson. I talk much more about myself on this episode than I ever have before, including meditations on my conservative upbringing, my senior prom, and The Muppet Show! I've also included two additional performances of “I Got a Name” by Lena Horne and Cher which drive home the importance of carrying your name and your dream with pride. If I've ever published an artistic credo, this is it. If, as I have done, you wish to explore and/or support J.D. Doyle and his Queer Music Heritage website, where I first discovered Jean Fredericks, you can find it at www.queermusicheritage.com. This is a weird one, so we're just going to lay it out here without getting cutesy about it. Chris Langham was a writer on The Muppet Show, and he filled in at the last minute when the scheduled guest star set himself on fire (really!). Later, he was also a convicted sex offender, which is why (we assume) this episode isn't on Disney+. (Anything goes! …see, that would've been weird.) We're completists, so we wanted to cover it anyway, and we hope you'll join us and very special guest star Shane Keating while we talk around Langham and get into the delightful “Friendship,” possibly racist Londoners, and one wild gnu. https://muppeturgy,com/episodes/chris-langham

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 25, 2025 is: dyspeptic diss-PEP-tik adjective Dyspeptic is a formal and old-fashioned word used to describe someone who is bad-tempered (in other words, easily annoyed or angered), or something that shows or is characteristic of a bad temper. The noun form of dyspeptic is dyspepsia. // The comedian's shtick of delivering dyspeptic rants on the daily annoyances of modern life was enormously popular. See the entry > Examples: “Statler and Waldorf from ‘The Muppet Show' made a long-running joke of dyspeptic critics. Never once in my teenage years did I point to the TV and say, ‘Mom and Dad, that is what I want to be when I grow up.'” — Charles McNulty, The Los Angeles Times, 4 Dec. 2024 Did you know? If you've ever told someone (or been told yourself) to “quit bellyaching,” then you should have no trouble grokking the gastronomic origins of dyspeptic, an adjective used in formal speech and writing to describe someone with a bad temper. To wit, indigestion (aka dyspepsia) is often accompanied by nausea, heartburn, and gas—symptoms that can turn even your cheeriest chum into a curmudgeonly crank. So it's no wonder that dyspepsia can refer both to a sour stomach and a sour mood, or that its adjective form, dyspeptic, can describe someone afflicted by either. The pep in both words comes from the Greek pep-, base of the verb péptein meaning “to cook, ripen, or digest.”
