The Swedish hit-makers ABBA changed pop music as we know it: they sent 20 songs to the Billboard Hot 100 and turned the world onto Europop. But there is some lesser-known music by the people behind ABBA. Back in 1995, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA wrote a musical called “Kristina.” It tells the story of Swedes who found their way to Minnesota territory in the mid-18th century.In 1996, Benny and Björn came to Minnesota, where Kristina made its American premiere. Now it will be back on the stage nearly 30 years later. Für Napoleon war Waterloo eine herbe Niederlage. Beim Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson war der Song "Waterloo" von ABBA ein absoluter Erfolg. Wir sprechen in unserem SWR1 Meilensteine Podcast über das gleichnamige Album der schwedischen Popsensation ABBA. 1974 war ein sensationelles Jahr für Pop- und Rockfans: Joni Mitchell hat ihr legendäres "Court And Spark" Album rausgebracht, Supertramp schenkten uns ihr "Crime of the Century", Steely Dan waren kulinarisch verdreht unterwegs mit "Pretzel Logic" und im März veröffentlichten ABBA das Album, das ihnen den internationalen Durchbruch verschaffen sollte: "Waterloo". Für die vier Schweden und Schwedinnen sollte das Album der Beginn ihrer internationalen Karriere werden, nicht nur wegen des Hits "Waterloo", mit dem sie 1974 den Eurovision Song Contest gewannen. Etwas Reggae, Glamrock und noch ganz viel mehr – für SWR1-Musikredakteur Niels Berkefeld ist "Waterloo" ein Abbild der kompletten musikalischen Bandbreite der 1970er-Jahre und es ist natürlich auch ein historischer Moment in der Geschichte des Eurovision Song Contest. "Da sehen wir einen ungeschliffenen Rohdiamant, den Beginn einer Weltkarriere und das Suchen und Finden des zukünftigen Sounds dieser Gruppe", sagt SWR1-Musikredakteur Niels Berkefeld. Benny und Björn von ABBA haben auf diesem Album musikalisch ganz viel ausprobiert, um den perfekten Sound für die Gruppe zu finden. Das merkt man eben auch an dem genre-technischen Gemischtwarenladen auf dem Album. Bevor Benny, Björn, Agnetha und Anni-Frid sich 1972 als ABBA zusammenschlossen, hatten alle vier eigene Musikkarrieren. Benny und Björn taten sich als erste zusammen und hatten in Japan schon einen Hit mit "She's My Kind of Girl". Der Song war allerdings als Titelsong eines schwedischen Erotikfilms bekannt und die Band damit leicht in die Schmuddelecke gedrängt worden. Als die finale Bandbesetzung abgeschlossen war, versuchte die Band das unliebsame Image durch die Teilnahme am ESC loszuwerden. Das klappte allerdings nicht auf Anhieb. Mit ihrem Song "Ring Ring" sind ABBA dann 1973 im schwedischen Vorentscheid nur auf Platz drei gelandet. Ein Jahr später, 1974 klappte es dann im zweiten Anlauf. ABBA gewannen nicht nur den schwedischen Vorentscheid, sondern auch den ESC in Brighton mit "Waterloo". Neben den tollen Kompositionen von Benny Andersson und Björn Ulvaeus, die in einigen Songs an den frühen deutschen Schlager erinnern, ist das Besondere an der Musik von ABBA auch das Zusammenspiel der beiden Stimmen von Agnetha und Anni-Frid. ABBA sind auch heute noch eine riesige Marketingmaschine, die auch durch das sehr saubere Image der vier Künstler sehr gut funktioniert hat – wobei vor allem Anni-Frid und Agnetha natürlich trotzdem als sexy inszeniert worden sind. Harmonie war das große Aushängeschild der Band. Es gab keine Skandale rund um Alkohol, Sex oder Drogen. Und während andere Musiker sich – damals wie heute – noch als Singles präsentierten, um bei den Fans die Träume einer Liebesbeziehung zum angehimmelten Star zumindest theoretisch am Leben erhalten wurden, wurde bei ABBA die heile Beziehungswelt propagiert. Probleme gab es in der ABBA-Welt nicht. Neben der Musik und den Erfolgen, die ABBA der Welt hinterlassen haben, gibt es noch ein Erbe, dass SWR1-Musikredakteur Dave Jörg im Podcast zu "Waterloo" hervorheben möchte: "Egal, wo die ABBA Songs laufen: [...] Das zaubert den Leuten ein Lächeln und Freude ins Gesicht und ins Herz. From an early age Tim Rice was a pop music fanatic. He began his professional life as a trainee solicitor. While still an apprenticed clerk Tim approached the head of Arlington Books, Desmond Elliot, with the idea of writing a book about pop history. The idea didn't impress Elliot, but the fact that Tim was also a budding song-writer did. Elliot knew someone in need of a collaborator: a young man called Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wanted to be a composer. At Elliot's suggestion, Tim wrote to Andrew, and a meeting was quickly arranged. The two men hit it off immediately, and, owing to Andrew's love of American musical theatre, began to try to write a musical rather than pop singles. And so this story begins. Tim Rice continued to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber, giving us visceral and intelligent musical theatre fare that includes Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. The pair also share the unique accolade of writing a song for Elvis Presley; “It's Easy for You”. The song is also remarkable in that it is the last song on the last album released during Elvis' lifetime. Subsequent collaborations have been with fellow titans of the craft - Elton John, Alan Menken, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson creating popular theatrical fare that includes Chess, The Lion King, Aladdin and Aida. His output has been presented by the Disney Organisation, on Broadway, in The West End and for commercial stages around the globe. The popularity of his works with community and school theatres has ensured that at any time, somewhere in the world, a Tim Rice musical is being produced. This year in Australia alone we have seen commercial productions of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and Beauty & the Beast. Tim is the recipient of 3 Academy Awards, 4 Tonys, 5 Grammys and 1 Emmy - making him that ‘rare bird' in the entertainment industry - one of only 17 artists to have garnered an EGOT. He was knighted by Elizabeth 2nd for services to music in 1994. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is an inductee to the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a Disney Legend Recipient, a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, and has his own Cricket team.With Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote a musical for Queen Elizabeth titled Cricket, and has crafted songs for Freddy Mercury, Placido Domingo and David Essex.Tim Rice has contributed songs to soundtracks, such as “All Time High” for the Bond movie Octopussy. Welcome to the middle of the second British Invasion! John Howard Jones was born in Southampton, in southern England to Welsh parents. He grew up in Wales, moved to Canada when he was a teenager, and returned to the UK in the mid 70's where he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The was the oldest of four boys, all of which became musicians, and started piano at the age of 7. Dream Into Action is Howard Jones' second studio album, and was released in this month. It went to number 10 on the Billboard 200, and number 2 on the UK albums chart. Rupert Hine was the producer, who also produced albums for Rush. Howard's brother Martin Jones plays bass on this album, and he has the group Afrodiziak as backing vocals on a number of tracks. Jones had a successful debut release in 1984 called "Human Lib," and "Dream Into Action" would be an even bigger hit. Howard Jones has a piano and keyboards-driven sound, and his lyrics are quite positive. Jones believes that his positivity and depth tends to create a negative perception in the media, stating that "what's 'cool' is often very shallow and transient." Jones is still putting out albums today. He released an album called Transform in 2019, and one called Dialogue in 20222.Bruce brings this synth-heavy 80's album to the podcast. Like to Get to Know You WellThis track preceded the album by over six months. It came out as a single in August of 1984 as the Summer Olympics were kicking off in Los Angeles, and was dedicated to "the original spirit of the Olympic Games." It was included in a remix album called "the 12" Album" in November 1984 before being included in this studio album.Assault and BatteryThis is a deeper cut which was played on an episode of Miami Vice. The lyrics are about the horrors of eating meat - Jones was a vegetarian at the time, and is a vegan today. This songs reminds us of Styx and Elton John with the keyboard work. Life In One DayThe third single from the album (or fourth, depending upon how you count "Like to Get to Know You Well") went to number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics are about not rushing through life, but taking time to enjoy the place where you are. The British vocal group Afrodiziak can be heard contributing backing vocals to this song. Things Can Only Get BetterThe first single from the album is the big hit. It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Afrodiziak contributes backing vocals to this track as well. It is a very deliberately positive song, encouraging the listener who is down on his luck to keep going, and to keep looking for better days ahead. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme to the from the television series "Moonlighting" by Al JarreauBruce Willis launched his career in this detective romance comedy that starred Willis and Cybill Shepherd. STAFF PICKS:Don't Come Around Here No More by Tom Petty & the HeartbreakersRob features a song written by Tom Petty and Dave Stewart (from the Eurythmics). This was the main hit from the sixth studio album "Southern Accents." It is a break-up song partially inspired by a conversation Stewart overheard between Joe Walsh and Stevie Nicks. The Alice In Wonderland-themed video is a must-see.We Are the World by U.S.A. for AfricaLynch brings us the ultimate supergroup. This was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa, and raised over $60 million. The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and Quincey Jones produced it. Musicians appearing in the band were a veritable "who's who" in the music world, including performers as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Steve Perry, and Ray Charles.White Lies by Jason & the Scorchers Wayne's staff pick is off the group's first full length album, "Lost and Found." Jason & the Scorchers' high energy and country twang led them to be described as "cowpunk." The lyrics describe a couple in a bad relationship. "Take these chains and set me free, release me from this misery. Now, don't you waste my time with your alibis 'cause your heart can't hide what I see in your eyes."One Night in Bangkok by Murray HeadBruce goes to the theater for his staff pick. This song is from a concept album and musical called "Chess," written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (formerly of ABBA). The musical is about a Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters, one American and one Soviet. Murray Head performs the spoken verse and Anders Glenmark sings the chorus. Let's head to Sweden to meet that country's most famous songwriter and guitarist, best known for his work playing with the smash hit group, ABBA. In our interview from Stockholm, JANNE SCHAFFER talks of his experience building his own guitar in school when he was just 12 years old. He tells us stories of how his disapproving father came to a gig one night to haul him off the stage and how he had to continue practicing and playing in secret. He talks about how he formed a friendship with ABBA's Benny Andersson and how it was, in part, his efforts that brought Agnetha and Anni-Frid into the group. Janne has a great story to tell that also includes hanging out and recording with artists like Bob Marley and Johnny Nash. Do you remember Canadian band, THE FIVE MAN ELECTRICAL BAND? Perhaps not the name but definitely that 1971 anti-establishment song 'Signs' which made it to the top of the charts all over the world. The group featured guitarist/vocalist Les Emmerson who sadly passed away recently as a result of Covid 19. The band was originally known as The Staccatos and this week current members Steve Hollingworth and Mike Crepin tell us about not only that song, but about their other hits and their resurgence in popularity, partly due to their recent efforts to raise awareness about climate change. We also catch up with Nashville singer-songwriter KELLY LANG whose dad was the road manager for country legend Conway Twitty. Kelly regales us with stories about performing with Sir Barry Gibb, Ronnie Milsap, Loretta Lynn and her dear friend, the late Olivia Newton John. Just a head's up for those of you who have a limited time -- this one runs slightly longer than most of the Patreon bonus episodes. The script's the same length, but there are about twice as many music clips as normal, so it may last closer to fifteen minutes than ten. Today we're going to look at a duo who at one point I planned to include in the main podcast, and when I moved them out of the list for that, I forgot to do as a Patreon episode at the appropriate time. But this week's main episode deals with the Searchers, who popularised their most successful song, so today we're going to look at a duo who are almost certainly the only artists ever to influence both Frank Zappa and Donny and Marie Osmond. We're going to look at Don and Dewey, and "Farmer John": [Excerpt: Don and Dewey, "Farmer John"] Don "Sugarcane" Harris and Dewey Terry were two of the best multi-instrumentalists on the California R&B scene in the fifties. Harris could play guitar, harmonica, and piano, and also spent a decade learning classical violin, while Terry started out on piano, but soon became a fearsome blues guitarist in the style of Guitar Slim. They started working together in a six-piece vocal group, the Squires, who were based in Pasadena where both men grew up: [Excerpt: The Squires, "Lucy Lou"] As well as recording under their own name, The Squires also recorded as The Blue Jays, making soundalike EPs of current R&B hits for a budget label called Dig This Record. One EP, as an example, featured "Sincerely", "Earth Angel", "Hearts of Stone" and "Pledging My Love", the latter with Don on lead vocal: [Excerpt: The Blue Jays, "Pledging My Love"] However, Don and Dewey soon realised that since between them they could play most instruments, sing most parts, and write songs, there was no need for them to continue splitting the money with four other people, and started working as a duo, while the Squires continued on their own. Don and Dewey recorded a couple of singles for small labels, the vocal "Miss Sue": [Excerpt: Don and Dewey, "Miss Sue"] And the instrumental "Slummin'", which was the first record to show off Harris' unique violin playing. I can't find my source for this, but I read somewhere that Harris created his own electric violin by taping a record needle to his violin and hooking it up to an amp. Whatever he did, he got a unique sound that proves that the violin can work as a great blues instrument -- his playing manages to combine the timbre of both the blues guitar and the harmonica, and it sounds stunning: [Excerpt: Don and Dewey, "Slummin'"] Shortly after this, Bumps Blackwell signed the duo to Specialty, where they were quickly fitted into what was fast becoming the Specialty house style, making records that sounded just like Little Richard or Larry Williams, starting with "Jungle Hop": [Excerpt: Don and Dewey, "Jungle Hop"] Their second Specialty single was a song that would become a standard, "I'm Leaving It All Up To You": [Excerpt: Don and Dewey, "I'm Leaving It All Up To You"] In 1963 that would reach number one for a duo called Dale and Grace, and in the seventies it would become a top ten hit for Donny and Marie Osmond: [Excerpt: Donny and Marie Osmond, "I'm Leaving It All Up To You"] But it was their last record of the fifties that became their most influential, even though like their other records it wasn't a hit -- a song called "Farmer John", that they released in 1959: [Excerpt: Don and Dewey, "Farmer John"] Shortly after that, they moved labels, as their A&R man, Sonny Bono, who had written their earlier single "Koko Joe" was moving and they went with him. Unfortunately, their new label did little to promote them, and the duo spent the next few years in obscurity, while Bono went on to bigger things, some of which you can hear about in this week's main episode. They eventually joined Little Richard's backing band, and played on his comeback attempt "Bama Lama Bama Loo": [Excerpt: Little Richard, "Bama Lama Bama Loo"] They also released another record on Specialty around that time, "Mammer Jammer": [Excerpt: Don and Dewey, "Mammer Jammer"] Neither of those records was a hit, and Don and Dewey started playing as a Vegas lounge act for the next few years. But oddly "Farmer John" started to take off, more than four years after originally being released. The first cover version of it seems to have been by the Searchers, who often sought out obscure R&B songs. Their version of it was an album track on their first album: [Excerpt: The Searchers, "Farmer John"] That was then picked up by a Swedish group called the Hep Stars, who had a top ten hit with the song in Sweden with a copy of the Searchers' arrangement: [Excerpt: The Hep Stars, "Farmer John"] The Hep Stars' keyboard player Benny Andersson would later start writing songs in collaboration with another member of a later lineup of the group, and they would have some small amount of success with their new band ABBA. In 1964, as well, another band revived it -- a Chicano band called the Premiers, from East LA. Their version is clearly based on Don and Dewey's original, combined with "Louie Louie" -- they've said that they specifically modelled their record on "Louie Louie" -- but it seems likely to me that the Searchers reviving the song a few months earlier will have brought the song to mind, as nobody had covered the song in the years since 1959, and the British Invasion bands were so popular at the time. Whatever the reasoning was, the Premiers' version made the top twenty: [Excerpt: The Premiers, "Farmer John"] That would be the Premiers' only hit, but it would turn "Farmer John" into a garage-rock standard, recorded by dozens of other artists over the years, most notably Neil Young: [Excerpt: Neil Young: "Farmer John"] In the late sixties, Frank Zappa was working with Johnny Otis and asked him about Sugarcane Harris. Otis had recently worked with Harris, who had played piano and violin on the Cold Shot album with Otis and his son Shuggie, who was also working with Zappa: [Excerpt: Johnny Otis, "Cold Shot"] Otis introduced the two, and Harris played with Zappa on several tracks, including two on his biggest-selling album, Hot Rats: [Excerpt: Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, "Willie The Pimp"] And he played violin and sang lead on Zappa's cover version of Little Richard's "Directly From My Heart To You": [Excerpt: The Mothers of Invention, "Directly From My Heart To You"] The exposure that these appearances with Otis and Zappa gave to Harris meant that for the next few years he was a successful sideman, playing with John Mayall, John Lee Hooker, Harvey Mandel, and others, as well as releasing a string of his own solo blues albums in the seventies. Later, he and Dewey reunited to play the nostalgia circuit, and they carried on playing together until 1999, when Don died. Dewey got in a replacement, but died himself four years later.
Cold war chess matches and show tunes collide in "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head. The song went to number one in many countries and topped out at #3 in May 1985 in the U.S. and Canada. The song was a single from the concept album “Chess” by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA (and Mama Mia fame) with lyrics by Tim Rice. It later became a musical, starring Murray Head. In the musical, Head plays “Freddie Trumper,” an American Chess master who is in Thailand to face off against his opponent from the USSR in a big chess match. If that sounds familiar, it's because it was inspired by the 1972 Bobby Fischer/Boris Spassky match in Reykjavik.In the song, Trumper is trying to stay focused on the match and not succumb to Bangkok's many distractions. Listening to it with 2021 ears, it's hard to miss the transphobic overtones or the way it hypersexualizes Asian women. If you were transfixed by the flute solo, you may have missed all that in 1985, but the Thai government didn't.
