Zoals ABBA's The day before you came. In this episode of Half Hour, we take a deeper dive into the new Broadway revival of CHESS at the Imperial Theatre, examining how the latest book rewrites and the use of a narrator reshape the show's Cold War love triangle. We look at how the score by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Tim Rice now sits alongside the revised scenes, asking whether the music and storytelling finally feel in sync. We discuss the overall production under director Michael Mayer, from the staging and design team to what's working in the casting, with particular attention to Nicholas Christopher's Anatoly and Hannah Cruz's Svetlana. Along the way, we raise the question of whether Broadway audiences are being dumbed down, dig into this revival's Tony chances, and wrap up with their “Half-Minute” segment, each highlighting one specific moment that stayed with us. Text:Apostlagärningarna 17:27-28Musik:The day before you came av Björn Ulvaeus och Benny Andersson med Benny AnderssonProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.se
Men själva delandet avlastar. Text:Romarbrevet 12:15Musik:The day before you came av Björn Ulvaeus och Benny Andersson med Benny AnderssonProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.se
Text:Jesaja 58:11Musik:The day before you came av Björn Ulvaeus och Benny Andersson med Benny AnderssonProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.se
Text:Jesaja 41:10Musik:The day before you came av Björn Ulvaeus och Benny Andersson med Benny AnderssonProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.se

In this episode we're joined by Pete Paphides, former rock critic for the London Times and author of 2020's acclaimed memoir Broken Greek. We start with our guest's unique "'Starman' moment" – seeing the Brotherhood of Man lip-sync to the ghastly 'Save Your Kisses for Me' on Top of the Pops in 1976 – and then plunge straight into a celebration of his favourite pop group ABBA. We hear about his love of the Swedes' countless classic songs; his interviews with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson; and how the quartet was indirectly responsible for his marriage to fellow scribe Caitlin Moran. Pete talks us through his journalistic odyssey from ill-fated pubescent fanzine Pop Scene via the longer-lasting Perturbed to Jim Arundel's mentoring of him at Melody Maker. Talk of his tenures at Time Out and The Times leads to his memory of "falling back in love with music" after years of being glutted with free records. The 60th anniversary of the release of 'Uptight' takes us into clips from Amy Linden's 1995 audio interview with the musical colossus that is Stevie Wonder – and a broad discussion of the Motown legend's creative evolution from 'Uptight' to Songs in the Key of Life. After Mark quotes from a 1963 review of the Beatles' first album Please Please Me, Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on Jaan Uhelszki's 2015 interview with the extraordinary Joanna Newsom.

Go behind the music and uncover the secrets of one of the world's most iconic supergroups. In this episode, award-winning Swedish music journalist Jan Gradvall joins us to reveal The Story of ABBA, drawing from his new book, "The Story of ABBA: Melancholy Undercover." We explore the fascinating human drama, the cultural clashes, and the surprising musical genius that propelled a band from Sweden to global domination. What is the shocking truth behind their happiest songs? Jan Gradvall, who has interviewed all four members, pulls back the curtain on the legends. From their formation as two couples who stumbled into a magical sound, to their complex journey through the pop world, this is The Story of ABBA as you've never heard it before. We start with their detailed ABBA Eurovision History, from the 1973 competition they lost in Sweden with "Ring Ring" to their game-changing 1974 victory with "Waterloo"—a glam-rock-infused pop track that broke the mold. Jan explains how the band faced intense opposition from the ABBA Progg Movement, a left-wing cultural force in Sweden that despised their commercial, capitalist sound and questioned their art. This deep dive uncovers the core of their unique sound, a concept Benny Andersson calls "Melancholy Undercover." Learn how the long, dark Scandinavian winters infused their music with a deep Swedish Melancholy in Music, creating a bittersweet feeling even in their most upbeat anthems, a sound rooted in Swedish folk traditions and Benny's accordion.Beyond the cultural context, we explore the incredible and often overlooked talent of Agnetha Fältskog, musician. While many focused on her looks, Agnetha was the only member who could read music, an accomplished classical piano player, and a prolific songwriter in her own right. Jan Gradvall shares insights from his personal interviews with all four members, revealing why Björn Ulvaeus can't remember being on tour and how the rhythm for "Take a Chance on Me" came from the sound of him jogging. We discuss how the band never officially broke up, the 90s revival sparked by the gay community and artists like Kurt Cobain, and the origins of global phenomena like the musical Chess and the stage and film sensation Mamma Mia. This is the definitive inside look at the band's journey, their conflicts, their creative process, and how they became more popular today than ever before.ABOUT OUR GUEST:Jan Gradvall is an award-winning writer and one of Sweden's most respected music journalists. With over 40 years of experience, he has cultivated a close journalistic relationship with ABBA, having been the first journalist to conduct in-depth interviews with all four members for a single story. He is also an instrumental founder of the Swedish Music Hall of Fame. I Gudstjänsten idag hör du texter av Joanna Kölsch, präst i Askims församling i Göteborg. I olika betraktelser reflekterar Joanna kring trons olika skepnader. Vassen böjer sina huvuden i blåsten.

Svensk kebab.

The Swedish hit-makers ABBA changed pop music as we know it: they sent 20 songs to the Billboard Hot 100 and turned the world onto Europop. But there is some lesser-known music by the people behind ABBA. Back in 1995, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA wrote a musical called “Kristina.” It tells the story of Swedes who found their way to Minnesota territory in the mid-18th century. In 1996, Benny and Björn came to Minnesota, where Kristina made its American premiere. Now it will be back on the stage nearly 30 years later. VocalEssence will open its 56th season with a concert performance of Kristina on Oct. 26.ABBA's Benny Andersson joined Minnesota Now from Sweden in an exclusive interview with VocalEssence director Philip Brunelle.

She's My Kind of Girl". Note: We want to be clear that this episode does include material that has been generated by Financial Times journalists using AI tools...we've done it to illustrate just how much AI is influencing the music industry.-------AI has arrived in the music world, and the industry is being forced to wrangle with it. The technology is now sophisticated enough to create entirely new deepfake songs. This year, millions of fake covers, and songs that clone the voices of musical artists, have appeared online. The FT's pop critic Ludo Hunter-Tilney has fallen down a wormhole to make sense of how these programs work. He actually made a song of his own, an original fake song in the style of Tom Waits. Welcome to the middle of the second British Invasion! John Howard Jones was born in Southampton, in southern England to Welsh parents. He grew up in Wales, moved to Canada when he was a teenager, and returned to the UK in the mid 70's where he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The was the oldest of four boys, all of which became musicians, and started piano at the age of 7. Dream Into Action is Howard Jones' second studio album, and was released in this month. It went to number 10 on the Billboard 200, and number 2 on the UK albums chart. Rupert Hine was the producer, who also produced albums for Rush. Howard's brother Martin Jones plays bass on this album, and he has the group Afrodiziak as backing vocals on a number of tracks. Jones had a successful debut release in 1984 called "Human Lib," and "Dream Into Action" would be an even bigger hit. Howard Jones has a piano and keyboards-driven sound, and his lyrics are quite positive. Jones believes that his positivity and depth tends to create a negative perception in the media, stating that "what's 'cool' is often very shallow and transient." Jones is still putting out albums today. He released an album called Transform in 2019, and one called Dialogue in 20222.Bruce brings this synth-heavy 80's album to the podcast. Like to Get to Know You WellThis track preceded the album by over six months. It came out as a single in August of 1984 as the Summer Olympics were kicking off in Los Angeles, and was dedicated to "the original spirit of the Olympic Games." It was included in a remix album called "the 12" Album" in November 1984 before being included in this studio album.Assault and BatteryThis is a deeper cut which was played on an episode of Miami Vice. The lyrics are about the horrors of eating meat - Jones was a vegetarian at the time, and is a vegan today. This songs reminds us of Styx and Elton John with the keyboard work. Life In One DayThe third single from the album (or fourth, depending upon how you count "Like to Get to Know You Well") went to number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics are about not rushing through life, but taking time to enjoy the place where you are. The British vocal group Afrodiziak can be heard contributing backing vocals to this song. Things Can Only Get BetterThe first single from the album is the big hit. It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Afrodiziak contributes backing vocals to this track as well. ABBA Scholar and author of 8 (!!!!) books on ABBA, Carl Magnus Palm, joins DJ Louie for an epic deep dive into the Swedish pop legends. First, Louie and Carl discuss the history of pop and "schlager" in Sweden and how the country's musical traditions helped form ABBA's music before tracing the pre-ABBA careers of the four members, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, through the 1960s and how the group came together in the early 1970s, both as bandmates and romantic couples. Louie and Carl then break down how the "ABBA Sound" developed from the group's early recordings and their obsession with Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" and The Beach Boys' vocal-layering, ABBA's unique international ambitions, how the glam-rock nodding, Eurovision-winning "Waterloo" changed their career, the ways they continued to refine and expand their singular aesthetic on subsequent hits like "Mamma Mia" and "SOS", the darker and more wistful lyrical themes that began to surface on mid-period hits like "Fernando", the majestic ebullience of "Dancing Queen", their canny techniques for incorporating numerous pop subgenres into their work without ever losing their essential ABBA-ness, the powerful interplay of light and dark in their work, how the dissolution of the group's two romantic couples informed their more emotionally-complex latter period hits like "The Name of the Game" and "The Winner Takes It All", how the band came apart in the early 1980s, and how their legacy has evolved and changed over the last 40 years thanks to their greatest hits album ABBA Gold and the jukebox musical and film, Mamma Mia!.
