In this narrated essay, writer Robert Moor journeys to Haida Gwaii, an island chain in British Columbia, for the anniversary of a historic agreement between the Haida Nation and the Canadian government that protects the landscape's last remaining old-growth forests after decades of logging. As he walks through forest stewarded for generations by Haida, Robert begins to see the tangle of Sitka spruces and cedars, mosses and lichens, not as a site of slow decay, but of ongoing growth. How can being in the presence of ancient trees, he asks, help us feel, rather than intellectualize, not only the deep past, but also our responsibility to the future?  Read the essay. Shadowboxing rounds are solo episodes where I, Life-Sparring host Fabian Gruber share "What's On and Poppin" in my life, what current books provide "Food for Thought," and what else is going on. There are no interviews, just a bit of solo rambling and occasionally some awful singing. This episode is somewhat of a comeback after an almost four-month podcasting hiatus. As it looks, a lot changed, and in the meantime, we entered a new world order. My thoughts on the state of the world and how to deal with such a historic inflection point are the show's main topic. Even the books reviewed in the "Food for Thought" segment fit the theme. This is probably a bit of a heavier solo round; let me know if you liked it.  For more information visit Life-Sparring.com/podcast

Robert Moor, a writer for GQ, interviewed Howie and I today for a story he's doing on Joe Schreibvogel. I have low expectations that he will expose Joe for the liar he is, but I answered his questions; even though it was weird to talk about Don and my past in front of Howie. I hadn't thought about a lot of the things he asked, which are all the animal abusers can ever talk about. What about the septic tank, what about the meat grinder, what about the restraining order… He apologized for the nature of the questions, insisting that he's just trying to refute the trash that Joe and his kind vomit in front of anyone who will listen. He kept trying to get me to say that I was hurt by the accusations, but I told him I'm not. I know their motivations and I know the truth. I told him that it is just an annoyance to have to keep going back to that sad part of my life with every new reporter the bad guys latch onto. Reading Future Crimes 187.8 Today. An author that hiked the Appalachian Trail and then got obsessed with the history and creation of trails. This is how the book “On Trails” by Robert Moor could be summarized. Sounds a bit, boring, doesn’t it?Well, it isn’t. Instead, “On Trails” is one of the most fascinating “outdoor books” of the past years. In it, Robert explores how trails help us to understand the world. From ants to elephants to hiking paths that span continents, from interstate highways to the Internet, Moor discusses how the wisdom of trails link together all species. It is a fascinating read, because it covers a seemingly simple topic – trails – , but spans an arc from the dawn of animal life to the digital era, and from science to history, philosophy and nature writing … to mention just a few of the captivating topics of the book – and of this conversation. https://www.robertmoor.com/https://twitter.com/robertmoor_https://www.facebook.com/robert.moor See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The story told on the podcast Over My Dead Body: Joe Exotic is a story so crazy it is hard to believe that it is real. In this episode of Payne in the Pod, host Robert Moor, joins Mary Payne.  Joe Exotic is a gay polygamous zookeeper in rural Oklahoma and who bred and rescued lions, tigers, ligers, and exotic big cats. He traveled with these big cats and put on shows where he would charge visitors to pet the baby cubs. As a result, Carole Baskin, the owner of a big cat sanctuary in Florida, became one of his enemies who he is convicted of hiring two men to kill. Robert takes Mary Payne through his experience of spending time with Joe from the animals and the zoo to extreme things he caught him on tape saying to his current trial. Was it trauma in Joe’s life and his self-image that led him to spiral out of control or was it simply his boosted ego? Carole Baskin of Florida Mary Payne and Robert then touch on Carole Baskin. She is a woman who ran away at a young age, lived fairly rough for a few years, was in an out of horrible relationships, was married three times, and one of her husbands randomly disappears. Carole did not think that Joe Exotic was treating his animals with respect, but the two have many similarities. Were Carole and Joe a match made in heaven to be enemies? Throughout the crazy story surrounding Joe Exotic, the craziest part may be what ultimately brought him down and lead him to jail. Robert and Mary Payne discuss the irony of the situation and updates to the other characters in the story. Catch up on all of the Payne in the Pod episodes, here. The story told on the podcast Over My Dead Body: Joe Exotic is a story so crazy it is hard to believe that it is real. In this episode of Payne in the Pod, host Robert Moor, joins Mary Payne. Joe Exotic is a gay polygamous zookeeper in rural Oklahoma who bred and rescued lions, tigers, ligers, and exotic big cats. He traveled with these big cats and put on shows where he would charge visitors to pet the baby cubs. Carole Baskin, the owner of a big cat sanctuary in Florida, became one of his enemies and is who he is convicted of hiring two men to kill.R obert takes Mary Payne through his experience of spending time with Joe.  He includes everything from his time at the zoo, to extreme things he caught him saying on tape and to his current trial. In 2009, while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Robert Moor began to wonder about the paths that lie beneath our feet: How do they form? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of the next seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. Moor reveals how this single topic—the oft-overlooked trail—sheds new light on a wealth of age-old questions: How does order emerge out of chaos? How did animals first crawl forth from the seas and spread across continents? How has humanity's relationship with nature and technology shaped world around us? And, ultimately, how does each of us pick a path through life? My guest today is Robert Moor, author of "On Trails: An Exploration." ______________ One of my favorite things to do in life is to find and hike a trail out in the wilds. I love how a good trail gently leads you through nature. You don’t have to think much about where you’re going, so it gives you time to think about other things. It's great for chewing on deep issues and getting new insights, but it also causes you to take the trail for granted. For example, I sometimes forget that a group of people blazed the trail I’m enjoying and that another group continues to maintain it without any fanfare. My guest today decided to stop taking trails for granted and to explore them in-depth -- both literally and metaphorically -- after his own hike on the Appalachian Trail. His name is Robert Moor and he’s the author of the book "On Trails: An Exploration." Today on the show, Robert shares why he decided to hike the entire Appalachian Trail after he graduated from college and why that experience led him to diving into the deeper meaning of trails. We then discuss why following a trail is so existentially satisfying and how trails are embedded in human thought and communication and provide us with a sense of place and orientation in our lives. We end our conversation talking about the idealistic origins of the Appalachian Trail, the movement to extend the Appalachian Trail to Morocco (yes, Morocco), and what a perpetual hiker named Nimblewill Nomad can teach us about the limits of freedom. If you’re a hiker, you’re going to love this show. If you’re not a hiker, it’s going to inspire you to find a trail this weekend and become one.
