Given the differences in power, and definitions of success, how can arts and change collaborations between institutions of higher learning and their local communities be equitable and accountable? And how can change oriented artists practice effectively and ethically with a foot in each camp? Billy Yalowitz has had a career as a theater director and choreographer that I think provides provocative answers to both questions and more. This podcast features a rich conversation between Bill Cleveland and Billy Yalowitz, focusing on the intersection of community arts and social justice. At the heart of their discussion is the importance of facilitating equitable collaborations between artists and their communities, particularly in the context of higher education. Yalowitz shares insights from his diverse career as a theater director and choreographer, emphasizing the necessity of understanding one's own heritage and community narratives before engaging with others. The dialogue also explores the significance of storytelling as a means of empowerment and healing, particularly in marginalized communities. Ultimately, the episode highlights the transformative power of art in bridging divides and fostering mutual understanding across different cultural backgrounds.A key highlight of the episode is the Black Bottom Performance Project, where Yalowitz worked to amplify the voices of a community displaced by urban renewal. This project not only sought to reclaim lost stories but also fostered a sense of belonging among participants. Yalowitz emphasizes the importance of creating spaces for collective memory and narrative sharing, illustrating how art can bridge divides and facilitate healing. The project serves as a testament to the potential of community arts to address historical injustices and promote social cohesion, prompting listeners to consider the power of storytelling in their own lives. As the episode progresses, the discussion evolves into pressing contemporary issues, particularly climate justice and the disconnection from land that many communities experience. Yalowitz shares his ongoing work in the Hudson Valley, where he seeks to reconnect with his cultural roots while collaborating with indigenous peoples. This aspect of the conversation underscores the interconnectedness of social justice and environmental stewardship.Key Moments03:47 The Keys to the Kingdom: Billy's Building Project05:29 Exploring Identity and Community08:48 Golden's Bridge: A Cultural Sanctuary15:22 The Tradition of Community Arts21:40 The Legacy of Folk and Modern Dance26:05 The Black Bottom Performance Project27:23 Community Stories and Reparations32:15 Migrations and Hyphenations: An Israeli/Palestinian Sago36:25 The Birth Narrative and Twin, Twin Transfusion Syndrome41:54 Challenges and Breakthroughs in Rehearsal47:06 Land Amnesia and Climate Justice51:40 Reflections and InspirationsBIOBilly Yalowitz is a writer, director and community arts practitioner whose writings and interdisciplinary performance works draw from public history and chronicle grassroots movements for self-determination.Yalowitz's interdisciplinary performance works have been presented off-Broadway and internationally. August 16, 2024 —1 - Albion residents responded to a Caltrans call for community comment on a draft environmental impact report at a meeting Tuesday night at the Whitesboro Grange in Albion with a demand that Caltrans include the rehabilitation option in the EIR. “For a good ten years plus, Caltrans has been talking about this being a rehabilitation or a replacement program,” said Jim Heid, a member of Albion Bridge Stewards, a local group that has carried out its own studies of the bridge's structural integrity. “All of a sudden the words rehab, rehabilitate, and rehabilitation disappeared from the project description.” 2 -What does a white male folk singer born in 1912 in Oklahoma have in common with a 23-year-old Mexican American female educator born in 2001 in Fort Bragg? Our guest this week is Ben Rose, a longtime creative force in the Indianapolis arts community who recently was named the inaugural artistic director of the fledgling Indianapolis Black Theatre Co. If you want to think about it as a startup, the theater has a long runway thanks to a campaign that raised $1.5 million dollars. Part of Rose's job as artistic director will be to establish revenue streams that can maintain momentum once that first round of funding runs out Rose has several outside-the-box ideas for supporting the company while serving the careers of company members both on and off stage. They're influenced in part by a varied career that took him to Atlanta and Los Angeles for significant periods of time, as well as his professional experience in several artistic modes, including stage acting, writing, videography, filmmaking and photography. And he has learned to see the world through several lenses due to his unusual upbringing as a mixed-race child from Indianapolis who was adopted by a white family at a very early age and grew up in relatively rural Tipton. In this week's episode of the podcast, Rose discusses how he forged a career in the arts through what he calls fortunate, back-door opportunities and developed his vision for how Indianapolis Black Theatre Company can sustain itself while helping its members find work in other venues. He also delves into the group's first official production which has something to say about taking professional risks in places where you might not have felt welcome in the past. It's a staged reading of a play about a groundbreaking black woman who became the first professional female baseball player as a member of the Indianapolis Clowns in the previously all-male Negro Leagues. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.
The 300-seat playhouse, which was flooded during the 2023 storms, is still dark, and the theater company is trying to come up with a plan to get it opened once again.

Peder Lindell talks "Descendants: The Rise of Red", becoming a pilot, and that time his height made him lose a role! About Peder: American actor and overall thrill seeker Peder Lindell has had a stunning rise in the entertainment industry that has continued to collect momentum. This actor/aviator/daredevil launched into the professional world of entertainment at just eleven years old, starring as Billy Ray in the Jungle Theater's production of "On Golden Pond" in Minneapolis. This impressive debut led to his Broadway Reimagined performance in "Gypsy" at the Pantages Theater, earning him accolades from across the Broadway World as "a fine young actor.” Within the last year, Peder's career has reached new heights. Lindell has joined Disney's widely beloved franchise, "The Descendants," as Morgie, the son of Morgana Le Fay, in the highly anticipated film "The Descendants: The Rise of Red." He traveled to Montana to take on the groundbreaking role of Gus in the state's first queer skateboarding film, "Scraps," produced by Colton Underwood. Back in Los Angeles, he gripped audiences in the role of Jason in his university's stage revival of "Bare: A Pop Opera.” Peder's talents extend far beyond the stage and screen. He took to the skies at just sixteen and is now an instrument-rated commercial pilot. He owns a Grumman Tiger prop plane, his beloved "sky convertible," which embodies his thrill-seeking nature. His interests are both diverse and daring. His adventurous spirit is reflected in his athletic prowess: a Division III ice hockey player at Loyola Marymount University, he has excelled in soccer, wrestling, diving, baseball, skateboarding, rock climbing, and snow and water sports. Lindell is certified in emergency first response and as an advanced rescue scuba diver, his daredevil streak also extends to the arts of parkour, combat, and stunt training. He's actively training for his skydiving certification, aspiring to perform his own stunts like his idol, Jackie Chan. Growing up in the artistic town of Northfield, Minnesota, Peder's journey into performing arts began with choir singing under the mentorship of renowned choral director Anton Armstrong. His talent soon led to roles in operas such as "La Bohéme," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and "Hansel und Gretel," with performances in iconic venues including Canterbury, Southwark, and Nidaros Cathedrals, as well as Carnegie Hall. A decade later, his return to Carnegie Hall underscored Peder's enduring passion and talent. Lindell's standout performance in "The Abominables" at the Children's Theater Company received critical acclaim from The New York Times, solidifying his reputation as a standout industry talent. Peder's film work includes "Out Of My Hands" and "Down The Drain," which premiered at the Catalina Film Festival 2021. His 2022 supporting actor nomination for "Dead Cell" and his role in the medieval fantasy series "Hidden Falls" showcased both his range and depth as a storyteller. Praised for his "impressive naturalism" by the St. Paul Pioneer Press and described as having "the chops and charisma to keep us on his side" by the Star Tribune, Peder Lindell is now based in Los Angeles, completing his bachelor's degree at Loyola Marymount University. With his boundless talents and relentless drive, Peder is not just aiming for the stars—he's already among them. Follow the show on social media! Larissa FastHorse (Sicangu Lakota Nation) is an award winning writer and 2020-2025 MacArthur Fellow. Her satirical comedy, The Thanksgiving Play, made her the first known female Native American playwright on Broadway at the Helen Hayes under the direction of Rachel Chavkin. Her new plays in 2023 are Wicoun (Cornerstone Theater Company), Democracy Project (Federal Hall), Fake It Until You Make It (CTG Mark Taper Forum), For the People (Guthrie), and the national tour of Peter Pan (Networks). Selected past plays include What Would Crazy Horse Do? (KCRep), Landless and Cow Pie Bingo (AlterTheater), Average Family (Children's Theater Company of Minneapolis), Teaching Disco Squaredancing to Our Elders: a Class Presentation (Native Voices at the Autry), as well as numerous productions of The Thanksgiving Play, making it one of the most produced plays in America. Larissa created the nationally recognized trilogy of community engaged theatrical experiences with Cornerstone Theater Company; Urban Rez, Native Nation, and Wicoun. She and her collaborator, Michael John Garcés, spend years on each project in an Indigenized community engagement process. “The engagement itself is the art form.” These projects have earned them national funding and an appointment to Arizona State University. Larissa's company with Ty Defoe, Indigenous Direction, recently produced the first land acknowledgement on national television for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC and continues to consult for them. They also consult for the largest theater organizations in the country. Larissa also writes in film and television, most recently as a creator for NBC, Disney Channel, Dreamworks, Muse, Netflix and others. She is based in Los Angeles with her husband, the sculptor Edd Hogan, and represented by Jonathan Mills at Paradigm NY. She is especially honored to follow in the footsteps of the last known Native American playwright on Broadway, Lynn Riggs.
