Sharon Baird is a dancer, singer, and actress. You may know her best as one of Walt Disney's original Mouseketeers on the classic television show, The Mickey Mouse Club. As one of only nine Mouseketeers to appear on all three seasons of the show, Sharon proved herself to be the best dancer in the bunch. Beginning her dance training at three years old, Sharon has danced with the likes of Mitzi Gaynor, Dean Martin, and Donald O'Connor. Sharon has also used dance to bring to life countless characters, including the puppets of Sid and Marty Krofft on such television shows as H.R. Pufnstuf, and the title character of the 1986 cult classic, Ratboy. Listen as Sharon and Shannon discuss Sharon's remarkable Hollywood career and passion for dance.
It's the "Save Broken Radio" telethon, starring Bronny James from the L.A. Lakers, a squirrel jet skiing behind a tiny ski boat, Sylvester Stallone and Frank Stallone, the entire Broadway cast of H.R. Pufnstuf the Musical, The Del Rubio Triplets, and Freddy Prinze. Will we raise enough money to save Broken Radio?
Andrew joins Ben this week for a discussion about a particular mythical beast, cultural symbol, and imaginary icon. One in the POÄNG and one in the pandemic chair—the guys fill us in on what they have been doing lately. Andrew has been thinking about his gardening hobby, researching a method for aging stainless steel, and creating all sorts of artsy things for his Advanced Dungeons Have Dragons pin Crowdfundr campaign. Ben has been pondering what he's going to do for the April Fools' Day episode this year and playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist (compliments of Binary Haze Interactive). Once they have concluded with the pleasantries, they enter… THE DRAGON! Together, they offer up a smorgasbord of pop culture ramblings and video game nonsense, including how their AD&D experiences shaped their creative natures. Then they navigate through a movie and music pop-culture-ridden obstacle course until they arrive at their video game destination. Andrew talks about Adventure for the Atari 2600, and Ben talks about one of the first laserdisc arcade games created in part by a former Disney artist and animator. *** 00:00:20 - A welcoming, the new threats, invest in leach farms, and Behind the Bastards 00:03:13 - Andrew left speechless on sadistics, Senator astronauts, and making it non-binary 00:07:33 - Stickers on Cybertrucks, rusting solutions for planters, and no library garlic this year 00:09:51 - The best kind of orchids, pro tips, the introduction is dragging, and the ADHD pin 00:12:58 - An ADHD Valentines Day, test printing for coffee mugs, and the AD&D pickup line 00:15:20 - Color printing wheels, and Ben has been playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist 00:18:02 - Not from Altoona, Mango is a Flerken, attention… dragons, and the ADHD pin origin 00:21:35 - Ben offends bowlers, no calisthenics before bowling, and "Trogdor the Burninator" Strong Bad Email #58 - Dragon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90X5NJleYJQ 00:23:50 - Another derogatory definition, Blair and the kaiju, and the word use blame game 00:28:07 - Taking back weird, tabletop lore, playing alone, and D&D method acting connections 00:32:29 - AARP Drews, rigorous screening, dragon drawing, and Pete's cost cutting measures 00:35:37 - Ariel is NOT dragon, movie audio n' picture books, H.R. Who's your friend when things get tough? Apparently, it's this nightmare fuel of a 60s TV show that has haunted Scott and Matt for most of their lives. Beloved by both their mums (who, coincidentally, are both named Donna—though that's probably not relevant), H.R. Pufnstuf was a wacky fantasy “children's” TV show that Matt and Scott were subjected to as kids. They now share two experiences: growing up with a mum named Donna (okay, so maybe it was relevant) and occasionally having flashbacks of the show, thinking, “Was it really that weird?” Then they watch the opening theme song on YouTube… Yes. It was that weird. Naturally, they decide to subject Gabby and Luke to this psychedelic time capsule of a show and process their shared childhood trauma the only way they know how: by creating their own improvised radio drama inspired by H.R. Pufnstuf. Of course, they creatively change the name to avoid copyright laws… that's how it works, right? The Apes are: Gabby Brooks Luke George Matt Driver Scott Russell
In 1980, a variety show debuted on NBC called Pink Lady and Jeff. Its stars were a pair of Japanese pop idols known for catchy, choreographed dance numbers. Pink Lady was inescapable in Japan: selling millions of records, appearing on TV daily, and filling arenas. But their American TV show left audiences completely bewildered. Pink Lady and Jeff acquired legendary status as one of television's most notorious bombs, a show that managed to kill off the entire variety show genre. Or at least—that's how it's been seen in America. But for the two women of Pink Lady, the show was something else. In this episode, Decoder Ring's Evan Chung puts this so-called “megaflop” in the spotlight to find out what really went wrong. You'll hear from Mie and Keiko Masuda of Pink Lady, their co-host Jeff Altman, head writer Mark Evanier, and legendary TV producer Sid Krofft of H.R. Pufnstuf fame. This episode was written and produced by Evan Chung. It was edited by Willa Paskin. Our translator was Eric Margolis. Who's your friend when things get rough?! This week on Puppet Masters of None, Ben and Will dive deep into the history of the 1969 classic children's television series H. R. Pufnstuf. From the creative minds of Sid and Marty Kroft, Pufnstuf tells the story of Jimmy and his magic flute friend, Freddy as they try to find their way home from an island of living objects headed by a drag-dino-ish...thingy? Mix all that nonsense with a dollar store wicked witch of the west named witchy-poo and you have a drug induced fever dream that only 1969 could bring us. We love people who turn their passion into a profession and tonight on the No Outlet Podcast we pay tribute a TV GIANT who recently left this plane of existence, of course I am talking about Marty Krofft, one half of the insanely prolific team Sid and Marty Krofft! In the dazzling landscape of television entertainment, few visionaries have left as indelible a mark as Marty Krofft. A luminary in the realm of children's programming, Marty, along with his brother Sid, pioneered a new era of imaginative and whimsical television that continues to captivate audiences across generations. On this episode of the No Outlet Podcast, we revel in his creative genius which took flight in the 1960s and 1970s and we explore how his brave choices tested the boundaries during a time when the landscape of television was evolving. We take a deep dive into The Krofft brothers' unique productions, including their iconic shows including "H.R. Pufnstuf", "Land of the Lost," and several other staples of childhood memories for millions (including me!) We analyze the genius that set Marty apart from his TV peers including his ability to envision and create enchanting worlds where imagination knew no bounds. Beyond the technical marvels, Marty Krofft infused his productions with a timeless sense of joy and optimism. Happy Holidays all. On today's episode we once again travel to the Isle of Capri where that one waiter now won't give me any cheese OR wine; I waste an entire day making the stupidest calendar of all time; we head down to the West Village AND the East Village where every restaurant is not made for people over 6 feet or anyone carrying a book bag; and, most of all, the most disastrous thing happens to our hero that he hates the most. Pufnstuf (also known as Pufnstuf Zaps the World) is a 1970 American comedy fantasy musical film produced by Sid and Marty Krofft Enterprises and released by Universal Pictures. It is based on the children's television series H.R. Pufnstuf, a show that features a cast of puppets on a "living island." The NeverEnding Story is a 1984 fantasy film co-written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen (in his first English-language film), and based on the 1979 novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. It was produced by Bernd Eichinger and Dieter Giessler, and stars Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney and Moses Gunn, with Alan Oppenheimer providing the voices of Falkor and Gmork (as well as other characters). It follows a boy who finds a magical book that tells of a young warrior who is given the task of stopping the Nothing, a dark force, from engulfing the wonderland world of Fantasia. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside the United States or the Soviet Union. It was the first in The NeverEnding Story film series. It adapts only the first half of the book, and consequently does not convey the message of the title as it was portrayed in the novel. The second half of the book was subsequently used as a rough basis for the second film, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). The third film, The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (1994), has an original plot not based on the book. This is a bit of a hybrid episode of the show. We welcome as a guest the owner and ‘head man in charge' of Orbit DVD of Ashville, NC – Mr. Marc McCloud! Troy and I have known Marc for decades and were surprised when he got in touch about his childhood trip to the Sid & Marty Krofft amusement part. He joins us to relate his recollections of that 1976 adventure and his subsequent fascination with lesser-known parks of the same kind. It makes for a lively stroll down memory lane and adds some detail to our Pufnstuf conversation from episode #167. The show is bookended by email reactions to our PUFNSTUF show with regular correspondent Kurt's Burning Man tale being a must-hear trip into unreality. Those Krofft creations are still able to conjure the most interesting flashbacks to a 1970's childhood! Other emails include a list of favorite sword & sandal movies from one writer and a question about the level of detail we can now find in UHD and Blu-Ray discs. Is it always a good thing? We discuss that at length along with a few extra topics that branch off naturally. As you might realize, the show goes on much longer than I expected! If you would like to add your voice to the next email show thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send your comments. Thank you for listening!
For this very special episode five people have gathered to discuss an influential part of their childhood – H. R. Pufnstuf! In particular we examine the movie that grew out of the children television show's immense popularity – PUFNSTUF (1970). So, grab your magic flute and come to Living Island for an adventure you'll never forget – no matter how hard you try. Wild, man! I am joined by Beth, Troy Guinn, John Hudson and Steph to talk about the biggest hit of Sid & Marty Krofft's many Saturday morning TV programs. Each of us relate our history with the various shows and what we thought of them as kids before diving into the specifics of the big screen version. We dig into the Krofft brothers' background as puppet performers, their early successes on the stage and the genesis of Pufnstuf as a character. We take note of a fun Universal Horror related song from their early 1960's adult puppet show and then turn things toward the amazing songs created for the film. We talk about the cast with Jack Wild's place in the hearts of young girls becoming a subject of some amusement while Billie Hayes' immortal Witchiepoo is lauded as the best reason to watch either the film or the television show. Favorite lines of dialog are quoted and we wonder aloud if some of the best bits were adlibbed by Miss Hayes or not. We also talk about Mama Cass Elliot's excellent performance as Witch Hazel and single out her song as a highlight. This really is a delightful movie! If you want to share your own memories of the old Sid & Marty Krofft shows thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We hope you enjoy this slightly chaotic trip into Saturday mornings past. Thank you for listening!
